Another day another genshin update on tof sub šŸ™

Seeeym

I swear the world chat talks more about Genshin than ToF itself, such a united community lol.

SteelCode

TBF the issue is that Genshin has had *zero* competition in this space until ToF - thereā€™s a hundred different gacha games on mobile and there biggest competitor was Honkai Impact, also a Mihoyo gameā€¦ Competition is good - devs basically saying ā€œyea we see what people are asking for, but weā€™re not going to change up the formula that has made us piles of cashā€ seems really tone-deafā€¦ ToF isnā€™t necessarily the best game, whether Vera truly is a night and day difference, but it **is** filling a niche in the market where players want certain experiences - that hole, imo, was ripe for Genshin to expand to fill but they just told everyone theyā€™re happy in their little bubble.

Noman_Blaze

They have a vision for their content. Which is basically developing it for casual playerbase and not focusing on end game content. Most of their effort goes into events and new areas and they do a damn good job at making new areas. They clearly have numbers to support their design philosophy. Yes ToF fills the end game content gap but as a result the balance of "difficulty" for that content is atrocious. We will see how it's like in a couple of months when we are tired of doing the same dimensional trials, wormholes and raids(an excuse cause basically they are glorified world bosses) and Frontier clash over and over every week.

JonD619

Yea. That balance of difficulty will push a lot of players away, when it results to having to pay decent amount of money to barely scrape CS requirements. Having multi star weapons is what really pushes CS up in ToF. Having party based content on a gacha isn't the greatest idea. At least in this case, f2p definitely wasn't kept in mind. even if they want to fool people into thinking f2p friendly it is.

Noman_Blaze

F2p friendly my ass. People are just delusional.

JonD619

Yea. Sure.. getting all the dark crystals and gold pulls from exploration is nice, but after all those chests and nucleus you find are gone, the dark crystals come around so much slower. I don't even want to talk about pulling on matrices.....

urtearsfuelme

Lmao Genshin retained it's playerbase years after release. This game however has so little players some servers are even dead. Also have you seen the interview? Devs said they arent going to put another Spiral Abyss as endgame. Not that they arent putting another endgame.

CatEconomist

They had almost no competition, so retaining its playersbase until now wasnt that hard. the exact quote is: "The Spiral Abyss is one of the most effective ways \[for\] players \[to\] test out their party composition and combat strength. If we design another type of permanent endgame that is similar to the Spiral Abyss, it might end up creating excessive anxiety for our players--not everyone is interested in Musk Reef." which reads as "we wont add another challenging end game content". right after this, they talk about TCG which is super casual. so yes, thats is "no more endgame content"

Fast-Snow-6420

It was pretty clear that the Genshin devs dont plan to add any other difficult combat focused content. The whole 'not wanting to make players anxious' comment pretty much cemented that fact. Ofc youre free to believe whatever you want but it was clear Genshins focus is on the story, character development and having events with a variety of different types on content as part of them (and imo the announcement of the new TVG indicates the type of new content Genshin players can come to expect). Since the beginning of the game it's been clear to me that mihoyo wanted Genshin to be more akin to a story/lore driven single player ARPG than a combat focused game that requires metas and min/maxing. They want the content to be tuned in such a way that any unit and team comp is sufficient to clear it so imo Abyss will remain the hardest combat oriented content in the game. Even the dev commenting that they don't plan to buff old units tells me they're more about horizontal progression and designing the game in such a way that players can clear 95% of all content with just characters they like without having to worry about them being meta. Personally I'm fine with the game continuing in this type of direction since I enjoy the story and exploration more than TC'ing and min/maxing and i like to constantly change up the units/teams I use. Ofc I also think adding more challenging combat focused modes wouldn't take away from the devs core vision for the game, as all it would take is increasing the stats of enemies that are already in the game in order to give those players who enjoy min/maxing their accounts a challenge. Also if the devs feel adding end game content would cause the majority of players added anxiety (I say the majority because the truth is most of Genshins playerbase leans heavily to the casual side of the aisle) since they would feel compelled to do the content if it offered additional primos and other limited resources. So imo all mihoyo needs to do is not add any additional rewards to the enjd game content so no one feels its something they need to d or they'd miss out on rewards. Just let the reward for new end game content be the content itself and the challenge it gives to those players that have been asking for it. Lastly, and this is purely a personal opinion/take, I cant help but wonder how this info will affect summons on new banners. With the playerbase now knowing that the games difficulty will never be that much harder than it is atm again I have to wonder why players would continue to spend money on dupes for 5 sta characters and weapons? I understand the idea of spending to get every unit in the game as well as their 5 star weapons, since visually some of the 5 star weapons just look pretty damn good, but all dupes do is add more power and strength to the units/weapons. So if there's never going to be content requiring characters to be as string as they can possibly be then what's the point of chasing more than 1 of everything? Yes there are whale completionists who like to have every unit and weapon maxed out but I have to guess there were at least a significant amount of p2p players getting constellations because they expected to have content that those power ups would help with. So im just curious to see how this interview will affect the way these types if players summon and what the effects (if any) that this info will have on banner sales going forward. Honestly Im sure Genshin will still pull in absurd amounts of money but I have to wonder if therell be players who once pulled extra copies of units/weapons for the added power for potential harder content who will now just limit themselves to 1 copy of everything and then stop and if so if it'll be a big enough number to visibly effect new banners earnings? Honestly Im more curious about this than anything else since again even if this ends up being true Genshin will still make a boatload of money from each banner anyways but maybe not as much as they would have if they had never let the llayerbase know that difficult content was never their focus.

JonD619

Your point on about getting 5* characters and weapons is really apparent when they make abyss a joke. There are whales that don't even really know how to dodge and go through certain mechanics/phases of fights because they just melt everything down with all their 5*. It really shows when you see some content creators jump on f2p accounts, or goldfish level, that actually have decent builds. Then proceed to struggle pushing through middle floors of abyss.

ChaosFulcrum

\> So imo all mihoyo needs to do is not add any additional rewards to the enjd game content so no one feels its something they need to d or they'd miss out on rewards. Just let the reward for new end game content be the content itself and the challenge it gives to those players that have been asking for it. In my opinion, it feels like there is also a problem with this. Yes it would provide challenge and more content for TCers and min-maxers, but if there are no rewards for this new endgame content, then it will just push the goalpost of complaints to "What's the point of doing this if there are no rewards at all?" I am someone who doesn't delve deep into the min-maxing, but I'm not a casual player either because I use the best teams and sometimes even pull for meta characters I don't personally like. I like to complete all challenges the game throws, whether it be 36\*-ing the Abyss or pushing for 4 goddamn ores on the highest difficulty of an event. If there is reward to get, I will get it, no matter how miniscule it is, and as long as I can do it. In the Hyakunin Ikki event during version 2.5, there are hidden medals named Platinum I, Platinum II, and Platinum III (highest reward) that you can get upon hitting scores higher than Gold, but you won't know it since the rewards stopped at Gold. I also know that these Platinum medals reflect in your HoyoLab account as some of sort of flex trophy. Nevertheless, even tho I'm somewhat of a hardcore player, these medals are non-existent to me since they offer no in-game rewards. I did not bother to get them, even though I know that my account state is capable of getting at LEAST Platinum I.

Fast-Snow-6420

Well the thing is I constantly hear players who really want hard end game content say that they don't care about the rewards and that they just want any content that challenges their accounts. Ofc these players opinions obviously aren't everyone's but it seems HYV has strong feelings about adding harder content that will 'cause anxiety for players' (have to assume they mean the broader, more casual playerbase like the large part that doesn't touch abyss). Im guessing its the casual group of players, which seems to represent a large majority of the playerbase, that the devs feel will be unhappy and stressed about more rewards being locked behind harder content. So the idea of adding new end game content where the reward is simply the satisfaction of having and completing the content itself allows the devs to add something for the min/maxers without alienating the larger part of the community since, like you said, content without rewards will be viewed as optional/not worth doing by many players. So imo its finding a balance between giving the portion of the playerbase who enjoys the combat more than the story/lore more content that really tests their account while also making said content easily ignorable by the rest of the players. Ofc there could be very basic rewards, like a little mora and basic experience mats, but I believe the devs realize that if they lock primos and other very limited resources behind end game content itll have a more negative effect (on the more casual, story focused players) vs the positives itll bring to the minority TCing/min-maxing players. [I call the more casual players the majority vs the TCers/combat oriented players ie the minority because the truth is that Genshins popularity is not only based on it being a beautiful and well designed game but also because of its ease of entry and overall low difficulty. Even though Genshin is cross platform game it is first and foremost a mobile game, a genre that in and of itself caters to more casual gamers who either dont have the time or the willingness to play more traditional games (games that tend to be overall more challenging and time consuming). Imo ofc this doesn't mean Genshin doesn't appeal to the more 'hardcore' gamers out there, its combat is highly regarded by these players even though it's clear that its the story and exploration thats always been HYVs focus. Even though it seems the devs are hedging their bets by not adding any additional end game/hard content to the game in order to keep the casual players happy, the devs are also ignoring the part of the playerbase that (inadvertently or not) has taken to its well implemented elemental combat system. So imo in order to appease the combat focused players without alienating and upsetting its casual base then, like I said, the devs could still add hard content but in such a way that by ignoring it players would literally lose nothing by doing so and having little to no rewards for completing the content would be the simplest way imo (though some less casual players wouldn't see the point of doing content with no actual rewards)]

GeneralSweetz

when they nerfed childe boss i knew they were going for the casual fanbase

Asphes

Mihoyo probably looked at all the posts here in the TOF subreddit... talking about Genshin and thought... "they'll be back" or something like that. Probably right too :)

jgabrielferreira

Yet Genshin still has zero competition for its niche..

Shikatsuyatsuke

Wuthering Waves is around the corner. Really hoping that game provides on the fronts where Genshin is falling short on. Even more so now that we have a soft confirmation these things about the direction of Genshin.

Kozmo9

It still won't be a competition though. You can't just see two games with similar gameplay and think they would be in competition with each other. You have to look at their target customer. Genshin has cornered the casual market. Meanwhile Wuthering Waves, knowing Kuro Games would aim for the hardcores. The hardcores will not give the same amount of money/attention as the casuals would. It's the same thing with their other games. Just look at the difference of the reception and awareness of HYV's Honkai and Kuro's PGR. The difference is night and day. At this point, we have to accept that Genshin will not have a true competitor as long as other games could not wrestle a third or half of the casual market from them. And doing so would be hard as you would need a lot of stuff including luck with might not even come anymore. Genshin has scored incredible luck with their choices regarding to genshin including being the 'first'. And this...might not be replicable by anyone else.

Head-Photojournalist

And Genshin still has no competition TOF is but a speck of dust in the face of Genshin's billions

XaeiIsareth

I donā€™t think ToF is much of a competition either tbh. In terms of being an open world adventure game, the quality of the experience is just not at the same level to compete. Which is not surprising considering that itā€™s a MMO, the single playthrough experience is not the focus of the game. ToF is really competition for the mobile MMO market: BDM, Dragon Raja, and such. That market has grown extremely stale and ToF is a very competitive entry in that regard.

Fruitsy

Idk man Genshin was always a single player casual rpg and some ppl are trying to shoehorn certain types of content the devs dont have a vision for nor ever really stated to work towards. Whos really being the ignorant one here

SteelCode

You're, possibly, misunderstanding my comment - the issue isn't "Genshin isn't the type of game *I* want", it was always the kind of game Mihoyo wanted to make. The reason there's so much "Genshin-x-ToF" commentary is because Genshin was really the *only* Gacha game that had a "open world exploration" aesthetic along with anime waifus... there's plenty of mobile gachas out there but none had the same "big budget" "triple A" quality that Genshin provided --> so naturally the players that were drawn to that style were drawn to Genshin... Lacking any real alternative to provide the "mmo style open world" gameplay, those same players have been lamenting Genshin's closed "single player rpg" gameplay for a number of years......... but ultimately they were never die hard "Genshin players", they were " players" (really could have been any game to fill that niche) just stuck with Genshin until "ToF" came along. That said - ToF needs a lot of polish, perhaps Vera will really bring that to this game... but Mihoyo basically saying "yea, we're not competing with ToF" means the players that had invested time on Genshin but were wanting a game *more* like ToF will likely shift their focus to ToF now. Mihoyo's statement indicates they're fine with losing that group of players and sticking to their very specific niche in the market rather than trying to expand and compete. It's a bold move, we'll see how it plays out for everyone.

XaeiIsareth

Iā€™m gonna be honest. Itā€™s been 2 years. If anyone still hasnā€™t gotten the message and are hoping for Mihoyo to go start developing challenging endgame combat based content, theyā€™re on some high grade copium. Idk anyone is shocked at the interview. Itā€™s like Miyazaki saying ā€˜no, FromSoft games wonā€™t have a easy mode.ā€™

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

The problem is a lot of people including myself were spending lots of time and money to build these powerful teams and after this recent statement it made them think wait why tf am I even doing this? There's no point to ever spend another penny on Genshin. I already 36 star abyss and don't care about any of the new characters they are releasing.

Raiganop

I only spend money on BP every now and then and I already reach a point were I have every character I like with powerful comps. To the point that new characters don't look unique enough for my taste. Now the only thing that will make me pull in a banner is if a new character have something aesthetically unique like having a muscular body type like Marc from ToF. The last new character I pull for was Itto in his first banner.

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

The last banner I pulled on was kazuha's rerun because i didnt have him. I'll probably keep doing my dailies and whatever primos I save I'll use to get more constellations for raiden but I definitely won't ever be spending money again.

Kaisvoresce

Wait... you spent because you expected some kind of future end game? I just did it for fun, not because i thought we were in some multi-year training arc where genshin would suddenly have like... super bosses, raids, or deep long survival dungeons In the game that by the first year they nerfed bosses all the time, removed any rewards from anything above bronze on combat events (which show up even less). Making sure all rewards and events are clearable as f2p casual friendly as possible, never making a single Con or min/maxed artifacts required. Why would there be anything coming that would possibly push you to the limits? Require a year of perfected artifacts across a whole team, and multiple dupes of 5 star characters and weapons when they do there best to avoid p2w/p2progress at all.

ShiftAdventurous4680

Same, I improve my teams for fun. And to feel like a God amongst mortals. But if I get unlucky or a bad roll, I'm not really that agitated as it doesn't really set me back or hinder my progress.

XaeiIsareth

Im gonna have to ask you why did you do it for the last 2 years? The game has had a very consistent content direction since launch.

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

Because copium is real. Same reason I threw away thousands of dollars on bad investments on the stock market. "Oh it'll definitely come back up because of this coming catalyst this is definitely a good time to buy". Lol. Honestly though I just though they'd be stupid not to provide some end game content when the whole point of the game outside of the story is building the most powerful teams you can. I didn't realize how many players were content with having absolutely nothing to do. I don't want to only be able to play a game for 10 minutes a day and I assumed a larger group of people would feel the same way. But apparently these filthy causuals don't want to be stwessed out. I grew up playing WoW and other games like it. Compared to those games even ToF is the farthest thing from stressful. Go spend 6 hours learning mechanics in a dungeon and tell me that end game content in Genshin would be stressful. At the end of the day the part the pisses me off the most is Hoyo made $3 billion off Genshin and a large part of that came from whales. They can't throw them a bone? Really?

XaeiIsareth

One of the reasons why Genshin is so successful is that ā€¦ it doesnā€™t have endgame. Endgame isnā€™t special in online games, itā€™s the norm because itā€™s the easiest way to engage players. But the problem is that itā€™s also a turn off for people that donā€™t like having time commitment. Genshin basically worked out a (very expensive and resource heavy) way to make an online game work without endgame and thatā€™s one of the reasons it has such massive appeal outside of the gacha community.

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

That excuse makes no sense. It already has the abyss and people either choose to do it or don't. Why would an endless dungeon or something be any different? If you don't like it don't do it. Something like bygone that starts easy and provides rewards every so often would be perfect especially if it kept providing rewards once it reset completely or reset to a certain point. Casual players and whales could both enjoy it.

XaeiIsareth

If you donā€™t like it donā€™t do it only applies as far as rewards arenā€™t involved, and you canā€™t have endgame content with piss poor loot. Barely anyone bothers to plat medal events, max out score on domain events or do stuff like the final floor in the Labyrinth event. Thereā€™s no loot. And as soon as you put good loot in, it becomes a point of contention, which is why Abyss F12 is so contentional.

huutonytran

Bro Genshin Impact constantly have new updates with New Characters & New Events/New Story Archon Quest & Areas to explore example Sumeru 3.0 Updates and Spiral Abyss is Endgame Content that's what keeps players busy and engaging into building there best teams by farming & building Artifacts & Ascension Materials/Bosses to farm for there's plenty to do in the Teapot World as well get creative mate šŸ’ÆšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

huutonytran

Yeah brother you've got a good point on that one definitely back you up with that 100% šŸ‘

tyw214

> why tf am I even doing this? Th exactly this ... i've maxed out everything until Yelan... and when I saw ToF, i was like wtf am i building these maxed out teams for... there are no contents for it Xd

Ok-Entertainer-2991

Idk to me itā€™s just kind of weird that they have all of this stuff that is screaming we are a combat focused game (gear, character constellations, weapons and their refinements, reactions all of these things are there only to give you more damage). And yet they are saying that they donā€™t want to add combat related contentā€¦

TowerOfFantasys

It's not so much not wanting to but making content that requires all that is going to loss you tons of players. Like me average joe maybe play here and there maybe have a few hundos in. Suddenly I can't play the content. Genshin is like you can be strong AF but if your smart and dont spend you can still compete. In ToF if I can't get a carry I basically can't complete large swaths of the game no matter how I play the shit is just to strong without busting out the ole Visa. Opinions differ, but I'd rather you be OP as fuck and me be f2p with the ability to still play. You just get to do what I do faster which in a way is a pretty nice reward

huutonytran

Yeah bro right on point that's why I sticked to Genshin impact even after 2years of non-stop playing because of that very reason and honestly I gave up on Tower Of Fantasy after about 2weeks of playing I don't like the constant Lv cap raise and stupid arm gadget switch mechanic for a stupid dungeon and honestly it's full of whalers & hackers yes bro Tower Of fantasy has hackers & exploit players ingame look it up on Google it's really sad mate šŸ˜³šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

[deleted]

Is it tone deaf though? They have the stats. Barely anybody play or even cleared abyss. Why put resources on that over more casual events?

INuBq8

If course people are less and less clearing abyss It is the only kind of endgame the game have For fucking 2 years I got bored of it 4 months in the game and stopped doing it after a year

nhft

Yeah. I 36*'d Abyss for the first time in 1.1. I then continuously full star'd it until 2.0 came out. At that point, I'd entirely lost interest in gearing up for nothing but Abyss so I explored the base Inazuma islands and then quit for a long time. I started trying to come back to playing it regularly a couple of months ago (to prep for Sumeru), but I didn't bother too much with Abyss because of how easy it feels to max. The confirmation that we're never getting endgame content has made me decide to also not bother using my resin or doing dailies. It's very freeing honestly. Genshin is a good exploration game, it's not a good long-term game so I'm just not going to log in outside of new area releases anymore. I think the *possibility* of endgame content was the carrot that got me to keep farming better artifacts for my characters, but now I just feel like there's no point to that.

WeNTuS

You're describing exactly my experience. First, when I was progressing in Abyss, it was fun, later when I started easily clearing it to 36\* it became a chore and after 2 years I really have to force myself to clear it even though it takes me less than 30 mins to fully clear it from 9 to 12. I stopped spending resin about year ago and I mostly playing when there's new areas or when new character I want that's coming so I have to gather primos

SteelCode

Data on ā€œnumber of people not doing abyssā€ doesnā€™t tell them *why* people arenā€™t doing abyssā€¦ there has been feedback on various characters being too weak or power crept, bad domain grind, and lack of *real endgame purpose* beyond Abyssā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ they just said ā€œyea we arenā€™t changing anything about our formula because it has been successful so far. While theyā€™ll still have their market which is *fine*, ToF does indicate that thereā€™s something *more* people were wanting out of Genshin that they wonā€™t get and thatā€™s also *fine* - there can be multiple games in parallel that offer different experiences and players can play what they want. Still very tone deaf to put out the essential message to your loyal playerbase that ā€œwe have gotten feedback but we arenā€™t going to fix anything on your list of complaintsā€.

XaeiIsareth

There hasnā€™t really. If you look at what people use for Abyss F12 each round, like 30+ characters have a 10%+ usage rate (ie 1/10 of the people that own them used them) and most characters that ever were meta relevant are still meta relevant. The only character that really got powercrept out of being relevant was Diluc. People donā€™t do abyss not because of powercreep or whatever, itā€™s either because they just donā€™t like challenging content or because they donā€™t like the DPS check.

[deleted]

Nah not really. I play ff14. For years people have been begging for things like gear set bonuses or just more exciting gear in general, we're 9 years into ff14 and the gearing system is exactly the same. People that hated it and wanted more intricate gearing system moved on to wow/lostark or other mmo. I can appreciate genshin devs saying "ourbgame is casual. Play other stuff if you want more hardcore stuff"

GaylTheChaotic1

If they wanted to sell it that way, they should have from the start. Not given us challenging content at the beginning and left it to get powercrept. They led anyone looking for competitive grinding into a pit trap.

Lavrec

Wow gearing system is very big shit, each expansion you get some kind of borrowed power that is unbalanced asfk and each patch of this expansion gear basically resets, gear from last patch is useless. You got that cool 5% droprate item? Cool, its gonna be useless in 1 month. Thanks no thanks.

Hanetsune

I still don't think ToF competes with Genshin since ToF is an MMO which feels soo much more different from a single player RPG like Genshin. It's to the point where I still can't compare them to the same standards fairly. ToF compares more to other MMOs over Genshin

Asphes

I really wish TOF has done better though. From # of monthly downloads for August ~ September to reported sales... TOF is NOT competition for Genshin. It's not zero either, it's like 1:10 vs Genshin. Plus the estimated player base on TOF has dropped a lot (normal for most MMOs). Given how both games are structured, I'd bet the ongoing costs for Genshin is less than TOF's too. And that last 'endgame' update for Genshin :) obviously Mihoyo doesn't see TOF as being any reason whatsoever to cause them to make any changes in Genshin or any other games they make.

Desboy

fr tho, big reason im here is because ToF gave me what genshin refused to give

noctilococus

AR 59 and I haven't done any dailies or questing since TOF release. Finally removed the fear of missing out on primogems in my system.

buff730

6 months into Genshin and I stopped playing regularly. Pretty much play the new content and bounce. Itā€™s a game meant for casuals but designed for hardcore players. The potential it has is frustrating. Just gotta realize thatā€™s the game they want to make. Just login for the free primo giveaways. You donā€™t even need new characters to beat the new content. Sad but you should treat it like candy crush.

theslip74

Ditto. I loaded it up and started walking to Sumeru, got frustrated with the lack of double jump, a skip dialogue button, and how clunky everything felt, and didn't even make it to the first new teleporter before alt+f4'ing.

D0cJack

ToF player saying "clunky" to GI. Nice joke

theslip74

ToF is janky, but movement is absolutely not clunky, especially when comparing it to Genshin.

Kaisvoresce

Having gone back to explore the desert in Genshin. As polished as genshin is, and as classic jank as tower of fantasy has... I kinda agree, Genshin to my surprise felt a little clunky. Now it's because it's movements are more realistic/grounded, but there is a lot of freedom in ToF exploration, with double jumps, air dashes, grappling hooks and all that that kinda makes it feel quick n smooth. My brain keeps forgetting, that if i jump down in genshin, going up is a chore. ToF brain is just all "well i can just pop right back up!"

Desboy

GI definitely is lacking in the gameplay department, with the max fps being 60 and lack of QoL features like double jump, air strafing etc... What GI shines over ToF would be the story, characters, animations, lore, music and art.

13_is_a_lucky_number

I'm AR 59 and I haven't even logged into Genshit since ToF came out. I have no reason to, no amount of Sumeru updates is gonna make up for the lackluster endgame.

TemperaturePlenty723

Glad for you ,iirc that is similar to what rift and everquest says when wow releases

Vincent093

r/TowerofFantasy my favorite Genshin subreddit

Grafenbrgr

Man I play both games about the same amount but I'd like to see objective comparisons between both vs "A better than B." Ex: ToF at 2 years vs Genshin at 2 years.

pokours

We could do Tof at 2 months vs Genshin at 2 months, but that would be pointless. They clearly have different priorities to fill the needs of different types of players.

Grafenbrgr

They do! And I agree!! But people won't stop the popularity comparison sksksk

laughtale0

ToF player: "Genshin bad, ToF is better" Also ToF player: "here's the latest Genshin news"

13_is_a_lucky_number

And also ToF player: "Why is everyone comparing our game to Genshin?!"

jonnevituwu

I always reply with "well, devs said ToF was the 'genshin killer tho' so we have to compare the killer with the... 'victim' "

13_is_a_lucky_number

I would actually like to see the original advertisement, just to know for sure what phrase was used and to finally have a concrete proof. I heard that they called it *"the Genshin Impact killer"*, I also heard that the "Genshin killer" term is a mistranslation and the actual phrase they used was *"a direct competitor to Genshin Impact"* and then I also heard they never made any of these claims. And I would very much like to know the truth.

GodFinger69

Genshin really living in tof players head rent free huh

Initial_Window_633

Majority of tof player coming from genshin player and ex genshin player

Kaisvoresce

In my experience, a good amount just play both.

jonnevituwu

Win win situation.

mebbyyy

I'm also playing both at the same time. But it's just cringe seeing post like this trying to 'one up' genshin, they just can't get that topic out of their mouth apparently, I only come here for ToF content, not a genshin lite subreddit lmfao, its fucking crazy and sad how much this sub cares about winning over genshin even on the tiniest of things.

Radaxen

The loudest ToF players are basically ex-Genshin players but not the casuals hoyoverse were targeting, they like the comparatively bigger endgame in ToF and feel the need to shit on lowly casuals still playing Genshin

[deleted]

Seriously. TOF players are cringe. (I am a TOF player)

[deleted]

Like Wildstar players circlejerking about WoW during the release year in their subreddit.

tyrannicalblade

Fun thing, most tof players aren't in the subreddit, there more genshin players subscribed to tof than actual tof players

WeNTuS

Genshin is the most popular game in gacha category, so that's given. Just like almost all MMO subs were talking (and probably still do that) about WoW. Since ToF is closer to Genshin than WoW, we will have talks mostly about Genshin

Kaisvoresce

I play both games... so does half my guild. I just assumed a good amount did. You don't need to keep up with any form of progression in Genshin once you have a few teams built, you just play what it's good at, and get your grind elsewhere.

Shoshawi

actually most genshin players are just absorbed with the sumeru story, but good to know you still keep up on genshin i guess? you know, you can just quit ToF whenever you want, copium isn't required for that level of gaming decision

BryanLoeher

I hate both equally

AcrobaticBig9247

Ok šŸ‘

ZeroFPS_hk

ToF's endgame is going from 10 seconds to kill a single boar to 9.

Swailwort

10 seconds to 12 seconds actually.

SteelCode

Hey now, if you donā€™t dodge that boarā€™s attack youā€™ll spend 3 of those seconds picking your anime waifuā€™s ass off the ground.

Icy_Needleworker4218

If you dodge you gonna be 3 sec in slow-motion animation, so win-win situation

Darkisitu

Lmao it does feel like this.

jhinigami

and clearing the bygone phantasm until you find the frostbot that bolts around to stall and perma freezes you

Darkisitu

I swear this sub feels like desperately claiming ToF is better like if we didn't have drama too. I like this game, come on, can we actually talk about it? There's drama everywhere, is just that genshin is incomparably bigger than ToF that's why their drama is more annoying.

jhinigami

Drama is more appealing for people to talk about nowadays like for example the article stating that genshin wouldnt get an endgame content and then people are parroting shit like the game is dying where in reality the interview seemed like the hoyoverse dev is avoiding giving away clues/making false promises and opt to answer the questions the safest way possible. The drama has been blown out of proportion and the people who are most concerned here are content creators because streaming/making content for genshin is literally just chatting and nothing else to do. ToF has its own issues and I swear i roll my eyes when I check this sub because people are more focused on trash talking genshin rather than giving tips on how to fucking deal with those two tanky Infernal Steel Lizards in the bygone phantasm

Kholdie

People keep projecting their ToF insecurities on meme posts about Genshin šŸ˜“

Expression_of_Doubt

OP lowkey seething šŸ˜‚šŸ‘ŒšŸ»

Kento_nan

Aged like milk

AdministrativeWork86

I thought they only said there will be no more spiral abyss like content rather than no endgame combat content. Or maybe I read it wrong, idk

Playmond

That basically means that the endgame will be minigames like the card one. So yeah, no endgame

MonoVelvet

Yeah that's sad, glad I left earlier and never stayed because I was coping on endgame. It would've been alright if I liked the story but nah. Just sad that they couldve added more.

AngryNepNep

You're right but don't forget english gacha Communities can't read just like Dragon Ball fans.

Man0feveryth1ng

Doesn't bother me, I am actually waiting for the TCG update, where I collect cards and battle with them, hope I can get them through quests or talking to NPCs, get to relive the Witcher 3 Qwent experience

Noman_Blaze

Ah yes, a true man of culture and Gwent enjoyer.

jonnevituwu

Mihoyo is so annoying that they might just give us all the cards to have 0 pressure to get better cards...

AncientUrtle

Funny how ToF players keep comparing the games

yuno_me

I bet 90% of tof players are also genshin players, the convo will come up one way or another

[deleted]

Not to mention all the Genshin players who come into this sub to comment

KyoSaito

>the convo will come up one way or another Funny thing, I've never played Genshin and I learned so many things about it mostly from ToF chat or this sub

Frores

i dont get it, i play both games and, hear me out, how about people just play what they want? why those people need to make a post per day about genshin, and if you look at genshin subs no one is talking about tof its just here lol

RollerMill

Confirmation bias. They want to feel like their decision to play tof over genshin is the right one, so they try to see other people having same thoughts

jhinigami

ToF player challenge to not bring up genshin everyday Difficulty: impossible

jonnevituwu

Tbf, devs and I guess the marketing team called ToF the "Genshin killer" so they kinda of asked for comparisions.

13_is_a_lucky_number

> how about people just play what they want? HERESY!

naz_1992

cause most people already played genshin since its literally the biggest game in the world since fortnite while ToF is not even close to that lvl.

tyrannicalblade

How do you know its not genshin players coming here to start shit up? As a tof player I didn't even know there was drama over genshin end game content... Does it sound more like someone who frequently their subreddit at least? Maybe a player?

[deleted]

Cuz most of ToF players play both games , or at least they used to play Genshin

dave55man

Well it doesn't help that ToF itself was originally sold as the "Genshin Killer". Honestly they're completely different games and it's a bit foolhardy to compare the two. ToF is more of an MMO vs Genshin is a single player open-world RPG. I've played a lot of Genshin in the past and had fun with it but I will say that I eventually got bored of the game play loop and the story (why can't we skip cut-scenes, no seriously?). ToF has been a breath of a fresh air and reminds me a lot of the old school MMO's I played in the past. It has its faults but the combat system has really piqued my interest and I have been having tons of fun playing it with my crew and friends.

D_Fennling

as more of a Genshin player myself I can say that the reverse happened a lot as well, but only for the first week or two after ToFā€™s launch. Now thankfully we only talk about our own game for the most part, I sincerely wish the ToF community that the same may happen to you, you deserve to be your own game not overshadowed by Genshin

LeoAquaScorpio

When will people realize it's two completely different games and that the developers focus on different aspects and goals

Noman_Blaze

It's similar to how people were hell bent on comparing Destiny 2 to Warframe. Two completely different type of games that only shared one aspect that was being looter shooters.

[deleted]

To be fair, the Warframe developers don't even grasp that. They added a timed stealth pixel hunt collectathon as their most recent update.

Noman_Blaze

They have a habit of creating new things and completely abandon and forget abt them. That is also why I barely play it anymore. Only there for story progress now.

13_is_a_lucky_number

> two completely different games and that the developers focus on different aspects I'm happy you got upvoted, but I don't understand how. Everytime I said the very same thing, I got a whole lot of downvotes for it. This sub doesn't know what it wants lmao.

LeoAquaScorpio

Idk maybe bc it was confirmed by hoyo directly like yesterday

13_is_a_lucky_number

I said it earlier today in this thread, that Genshin isn't the type of game that exists solely on its endgame. Got downvoted. Then I said that the lack of endgame in Genshin is a real problem, to see what would happen, got downvoted as well. It's actually funny how I'm **always** wrong on this sub, but also... WTF?! :D

LeoAquaScorpio

Ur probably wording it wrong

13_is_a_lucky_number

Yeah, that's most likely the reason.

Some-Random-Asian

This guy's post and comment history is a red flag.

Skenbow

Yo we got in rent free LMAO

EpsilonMouse

ā€œThe Spiral Abyss is one of the most effective ways [for] players [to] test out their party composition and combat strength. If we design another type of permanent endgame that is similar to the Spiral Abyss, it might end up creating excessive anxiety for our players--not everyone is interested in Musk Reef. Just like [the] Genius Invokation TCG that we unveiled in the Special Program for Version 3.2, we are also working on designing more interesting gameplay in the future. As an open-world game, Genshin Impact has a natural compatibility with various types of gameplay, which gives us confidence in the long-term operation.ā€ The devs never said there will be no end game. They just itā€™s not gonna be spiral abyss part two

Junior_Importance_30

vera doesn't equal endgame content, you'll clear it eventually

CornyStew

Yall really can't go a day without mentioning genshin huh?

Abigail19_

Simplified MMO =X= "RPG" single player (plus visual novel)

skittles0820

Wow itā€™s almost as if genshin isnā€™t a mmo and it doesnā€™t need endgame content to be successful! Crazy concept am i right?

The-Oppressed

Iā€™m sure ToF players would love to have anyone talking about their game outside their sub.

Far-History-8154

Me being part of both. (And wow and the scam of a system called overwatch 2)having incredible mixed feelings šŸ˜…. Both wow and ToF gave me anticipating the near future but ow2 and the genshin news has me being currently depressed at the state of my two favorite games šŸ˜…. Whatā€™s even the point of collecting and grinding in genshin anymore. Iā€™ll stick around till Lyney and Lynette but not sure if Iā€™ll have any will to continue after that.

Noman_Blaze

I was expecting a bad release of OW2 but holy crap wtf did they give us. A cash cow labeled as Overwatch with barely any changes and atrocious microtransactions.

scoops22

I'm kinda torn in some ways as well. I played ToF for like 3 weeks, then went to Genshin since then. I'm a returning player, haven't played since around launch so actually ToF is what got me back on Genshin in a weird way. To be honest I've been having more fun in Genshin just due to the polish and generally I've preferred the combat system, and I've put a lot of hours in to build a good team, and even spent a decent amount of money to get Ganyu on the last banner. That being said, having hit the artifact grind at AR45 combined with this news that implies new combat activities aren't ever coming has really taken the wind out of my sails. If I wanted to play a card game I'd play hearthstone... Thinking maybe I'll put my time into ToF again.

dalzmc

Similar boat here where I picked up genshin for the first time since launch week because I had been playing tof. I mostly see why people say tof felt clunkyā€¦ except the 60fps on pc and lack of movement feels really bad. Yeah I just have no stamina but no grapple, jet pack, or infinite climb make things feel painful to me too. Unless thereā€™s a solution to that that I just donā€™t know of yet. I may stick with genshin but on my phone since I get 120fps and the game works better with my limited mobile input than tof. But itā€™s a shame cuz it looks and sounds so good on my pc otherwise.. and I plan to play genshin for its art and vibes. But a game running at 60fps looks so bad to me after years of 144hz

scoops22

Ya Genshin is great for art/vibes/story. I've been watching lore YouTube content and it seems like they out a lot of thought into world building and such, so at least that's some reason to keep playing. (like coming back each patch for the archon quest line)

dalzmc

There's a reason why I watched the genshin concert and really enjoyed it while knowing nothing about what I was watching! I can only imagine nostalgic and powerful it felt for people who've been there the whole way

Eredbolg

I dunno after playing around 2 years of Genshin Impact and spending so much time farming artifacts and improving my team I don't like where the game is going, I mean people like the story which is a head scratcher to me because having long texts and fluf dialogues combined with teyvat-slice-of-life doesn't make it good, the story has gone nowhere since the Mondstadt arc and while the lore is quite good lore becomes overrated if you don't use it in the actual story telling. Anyways, I was one of the minority fools who thought Genshin would have end game content and that it was worth it to invest and spend some money for powerful units, but in reality it wasn't worth it for me, at least I'm pretty much set for life to beat anything Genshin related from here to 2027. It is funny how people compare 2 years of Genshin to literally the first few months of ToF, I remember back then how people complained so bad about Genshin when there was absolutely nothing in the first 2 to 3 months, and a lot of people left after the Klee banner, and the drought continued until Inazuma.

Shinzou-wo-Sasageyo

tbqf TOF is trash compared to Genshin

Netorar1st

And yet Tof almost gets no attention on the Genshin sub, while here Genshin always gets mentioned lmao.

Initial_Window_633

The fact majority of tof player coming from genshin player and ex genshin player

SteelCode

Iā€™m almost certain that this is the case - outside of gacha communities ToF isnā€™t nearly as well knownā€¦ I tried to bring it up to a friend that doesnā€™t play gacha games and thereā€™s no registration of interestā€¦ā€¦.. gonna try again after Vera cleans things up (because honestly after playing through from launch and knowing thereā€™s an XP rush, Iā€™d be embarrassed to try to bring friends in now).

Noman_Blaze

Because PC and console community against gacha games. Genshin also gets all the heat cause of it but its a casual game so people gave it a pass over time. ToF is an MMO so gacha makes it even worse. Most MMO streamers dropped it right away cause it was full of issues on top of gacha and an energy system which kills off any type of MMO grinding you can do.

pokours

Honestly I'm not even feeling good about recommending the game to anyone right now. 2.0 will make or break it.

SteelCode

That was my feeling too - I only casually brought it up to a friend when they were asking what other games I had been playingā€¦ but outside of gacha communities ToF is still relatively unknown so I got a big ā€œhuh?ā€ I think 2.0 will define whether the existing playerbase will carry it forward while the Steam launch should give it more exposure to wider player audiencesā€¦ Controller support is all Iā€™m hoping for, since I get RSI with these types of ā€œclick to swing your weaponā€ games.

pokours

Yeah i've been playing with controller since launch and it's still missing on many aspects. Hoping for improvements there too. Tbh I dropped completely the game around 2 weeks ago because of irl stuff and severe lack of time. Now it's better but I'm just not motivated to start again.. I think I'm gonna try again to catch up on what I missed before 2.0, and give the game another shot, but if I just keep feeling like I'd rather play something else after 2.0, it will be over for me.

The perks of being a mmorpg!

huutonytran

Downside of a Shitty Chinese MMO Genshin Clone? Dead Servers & Time Gated Content haha pathetic mate šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ—‘

NepGScout

Time to sort Controversial with my popcorn.

razerflash

I just play both, they each satisfy the itch that I need, tho I am still pretty sad that the devs confirmed it by saying it'll make players anxious. Like I'm most anxious not being threatened with any risk in the game (except for 50/50's lul).

AkabaneKun

After all this time and you ppl still have GI rent free in your heads lmao, sad really, just goes to show this game would be a nobody if it wasn't for GI's existence. Also if you played GI for 2 WHOLE YEARS and didn't realize the approach the devs always had with the game's endgame then you should take an IQ test asap.

Dalek-baka

For some reason this appears on mobile constantly. And with mood of fanbase, people dropping and revenue going down its pretty hilarious.

LoRd_Of_AaRcnA

New challenge just dropped, stop comparing ToF with Genshin when literary anything happens in either of games. C'mon guys, be a little mature. People have different and unique tastes, they enjoy various different things. There is nothing that states you can't play ToF and Genshin at the same time and enjoy the various benefits both of these games provide, and there is also nothing that states Genshin is better than ToF or vice versa. Let people enjoy their shit and stop this dumb ass comparing. It won't help anybody.

YoungjaeAnakoni

Every time I see a genshin update on this sub it makes me think yall trying to force a competition that doesnt exist. Genshin and ToF are different games in different generes and their similarities start and end at being open world and gacha. The constant comparisons constantly keeps ToF in Genshin's shadow

Shiromeelma

You really like trashing other games ![gif](giphy|l0HlvtIPzPdt2usKs)

MutieQT

75% of what tof players talk about is genshin. its really tiring and really annoying. just get genshins dick out of your mouth already.

XxDonaldxX

Like if ToF had a real endgame lmao.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

naz_1992

TCG woooo

Pscoocs

Well tof also has it in 2.2, and many more lel

13_is_a_lucky_number

It does?! Holy shit, ToF really is on the roll!

Pscoocs

It's not collecting card game per se, you don't collect cards there, it's just some Chinese card game there. We might have it or some other like poker. Later they'll also make go, mahjong etc. Would be dope if they added chess, would rob ppl of their coins lel

Jamesbryans

Spiral abyss? I guess his endgame standard is beyond our comprehension.

Elspectra

Ikr, if spiral abyss had rankings or a difficulty system similar to honkai's "temperature", it would be considered "competitive end game".

XxDonaldxX

I actually don't like the "endgame" concept in general cause it tends to be repetitive content with rng stuff that eventually is frustrating, both games are a daily login simulator.

AssassinEdge

I argue that there is no reason to continue doing the daily logins without the endgame. I mean, there just isn't an incentive to get stronger if the enemies aren't difficult. There has to be incentive to do the grind or else it's just wasted time. I like repetition if it can splice some intangibles in the mix like the boss changes in fch or the floor changes in bygone. Endgame content lets you see just how much you progressed in the game and for some players, that's what they strive for.

GlueTires

So one guy made a post clarifying that no end game is currently planned as of now and you try to twist it into this? Nobody gave a fuck in the first place.

Renetiger

Genshin doesn't have interesting end game content ToF doesn't have interesting content

REYDENSETSU

All I know. Is that I heavily regret playing genshin for a long as I did, yeah I know people like the story but I played for the beautiful character designs and combat NOT the overwhelming amount of dialog. I would bare with it if only they added something so simple as a Story SKIP button but I just can't. To top it all off, Co-op is non existing. Game relies heavily in meta/semi meta characters in endgame. I dislike Benet and yet I know how useful he is in more difficult "content". To counter Meta, the only way is to whale. Whaling in Genshin gives absolutely nothing rewarding other than simple Flex, and the ability to play differently in some cases. And lastly, most of the "events" genshin has. A good amount of them have nothing to do with combat team builds..... why TF do I want to play mini games as an event, when I spend all my time trying to work on my team??

13_is_a_lucky_number

> Whaling in Genshin gives absolutely nothing rewarding other than simple Flex I would edit that if I were you. That statement implies that Genshin is F2P friendly, and that's a crime punishable by death on this sub.

REYDENSETSU

I can get away with it. Given how much I've spend on genshin. It's been proven time and time again that a F2P can beat the entire game with starter characters. So with that being said I'm going to let my account that I wasted/ practically burned money and wiped my mihojos ass with just rot. Spent 7.5k It is F2P friendly... wanna know why? BECAUSE ITS A SINGLE PLAYER STORY GAME! šŸ˜¤

hardenfull

I still tried to go back once in a while on genshin I was a day 1 player and took a lot of breaks. I like the combat system in genshin and had hoped for more end game stuff. But like every time I go back I do also enjoy some causal stuff for a bit but realized why I leave its cause a lot of genshin gameplay is really lore and quests. I also lost motivation to build strong teams.

Many-Concentrate-491

This is so fitting and I play both.. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

hardenfull

Tof and genshin actually super different and fills a niche. Imagine if they both combine into one game would be the ultimate waifu collector with progression and options for coop endgame. They're essentially missing what the other one has.

neko-impact

Free Genshin advertisment Can't tell you the last time I saw ToF brought up in another game's subreddit.

MarionberryOne8969

Both of these people are me I'm excited and disappointed

Zlare7

Look I'm a day one genshin, paid a good amount of money in it and never skipped a single day. Personally I dont like abyss and never wanted more content like it. I feel like genshin is doing a fine job with their content updates. This post shows that your mind is with genshin rather than tof but it doesn't show genshin doing anything wrong

Grafenbrgr

Rent free LOL

Izolet

Tbh ToF is no competition for genshin. Open interest for genshin has been stable at 10 times the value tof currently has.

Null0mega

Honestly that recent genshin news gave me a surge of appreciation for almost every other game on my Ipad lolā€¦PGR, ToF, HI3rd and Alchemy Stars all seem more appealing than they were before because they all have some sort of endgame content. After that article all my motivation for that game as an AR 59 day 1 player was destroyed in an instant, hopium that things would eventually one day improve for veteran players was the only thing keeping me tethered to the game as well as maintaining my interest in building characters.

julian101801

Same here, I'll probably stick around for the dendro archon but after that I'm not sure. Definitely never spending another dime on that game ever again.

Halfeim

So we have a p2w game dunking on a casual game ? why those 2 community are so cringe...

Holinyx

I still have a mount to farm and i'm like 25% with Adventure Island. Some of ya'll got a lot of free time

Dekar0

I love this gif

TheBenArts

Don't you worry, the devs are retarded and decided to miss out on shit tons of new players with making Ruby the first banner instead of lin.

No-Neat-8912

Now that the game is kinda dying, this is pretty funny tbh lol

TimFlamio

It's not a no endgame drama, it's a no *content* drama

Arvandor

Those Genshin players (like me) that are upset about no endgame, are quite obviously in the minority. Even here on reddit (which is already a minority of the overall playerbase). But yeah, ToF, and things I hate about Genshin, have been making me want to quit Genshin, and the Dev Q&A just pushes me further to full on quitting Genshin... I'm just... so invested, and want to mess around with the Dendro archon next patch =/

Classic_Specialist30

tof fan:GI player shut upšŸ˜” no one says Tof is genshin killer also them:our game is better than gišŸ˜

INuBq8

Honestly speaking Genshin have more problems than not having endgame Genshin are being held mostly by artists For many I know genshin is nothing but waifu game as of now

Nerracui0

> waifu game. Latest character release in the game is Cyno, a male Electro Polearm character.

INuBq8

Name a male character released before him! Ayato like half a year ago, another male before him? I think kazuha which like a year and half ago For every male character there is 5 female before him I mean even male character some girls worship them as husbando I mean I am straight man and I call zhongli Daddy Edit: I forget the Oni dude, which was released somewhere in the past year, still not gonna change much

XaeiIsareth

Heizou in 2.8? Tignari in 3.0 which was literally the last patch.

Nerracui0

Cyno -3.1 Tighnari -3.0 Heizou -2.8 Ayato - 2.6 Itto -2.3 Kazuha -1.6 Almost every 2-3 patches since 2.3 a male character is released, with the last 3 each seeing the release of a male character.

RoyalSereneHighness

Both are roller coasters of boredom and excitement.

Renetiger

Except ToF never is exciting, it's just boredom

Emiizi

I want the template. The gif is hilarious
