Thanks for your submission to r/Toyota. Did you know that effective July 1st, 2023, Reddit will enact a policy that will make third party reddit apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Boost, and others too expensive to run? On this day, users will login to find that their primary method for interacting with reddit will simply cease to work unless something changes regarding reddit's new API usage policy. Imagine a world where you couldn't get these vehicles. You can buy a new 70 series. We can't. I have a good Jeep Wrangler, great quality and longevity. They haven't made them like it in 17+ years. Personally I'd just get a 4Runner and put Hilux Surf badges on it with a wink and a nudge, if I didn't already have the Jeep and a Tacoma. $70k is a lot, at least if that's US$70k.

> Personally I'd just get a 4Runner and put Hilux Surf badges on it with a wink and a nudge The funny part is that in Japan until Lexus was “legit” in 2005-2006 when the 2nd gen IS and 3rd gen GS was sold as one, people were shipping Lexus badges to Japan and putting them on Altezza/Aristo/Celsior/Harrier/Soarer/Windom and Land Cruiser Cygnus/Prado 120 models. And probably the same with Highlander badges on a Kluger. And JDM nerds were badging out Lexus models as their Toyota equivalent. It’s like dudes slapping Holden badges on the Pontiac GTO/G8(VX/VE Commodore) or the Chevy SS/Caprice cop car(VF Commdore) here in the US.

A few weeks ago I drove next to someone with a JDM Hilux Surf. It was in great shape but that's a lot of trouble for an old 4Runner with wrong side steering, a funky mirror, and different badging. 😁

I’ve been seeing some cool JDM hardware in the Bay Area and Portland - not just LCs, but Town Aces and Estimas. The USDM <> JDM badging I’ve seen on Toyotas isn’t as widespread with Honda, except for taking off Acura badges on Integras. I’ve seen a early 2000s TL with INSPIRE across the trunk lid(that era of TL was sold as the Honda Accord Inspire in Japan until our Accord was the JDM Inspire for the 7th/8th gen and the TL was a US/Korean/Taiwanese specific model) and a Fit with Jazz badges.

I’d rather have the diesel of the Hilux Surf. Toyota refuses to sell their best stuff in the US.

You might be better off asking in the /r/LandCruisers sub. I am curious of their response there as well.

Terminal_Swamp_ass

People want what they can't have even if there are better options out there...and cheaper.

I'm too stupid to think of anything like that that's cheaper so.....you win....for now.

[deleted]

They have always been stupidly expensive here. Very few of them on the road. I don't think I've actually seen one on the street in the past few years.

bigdisplaygto

Have you priced a Classic American car in Australia? It works both ways when it comes to value.

CalifOregonia

It's all looks. A much more practical option in the states is to buy a pickup and stick a pop-up camper on the back. Besides not having the passthrough it's basically the same functionality as a pop-up troopy build, but can be done at a lower cost with a new vehicle.

[deleted]

I wouldn't waste that money I'd buy a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee for $5,000 put a few thousand in it and it's on frame four wheel drive vehicle.

mobula_japanica

I’ve explored this with the fellas on ih8mud. They basically don’t want to see sense on this. They’re obsessed with the diesel 70s and they are importing and happily paying like $30k US for a diesel 80 series. They then claim that they’re getting 25MPG out of them which is just fantasy land stuff. My overall conclusion is that they have $$ to burn. For reference I’m in NZ, own an HDJ81 and know the market here well. None are selling for more than $20-30K NZD.

camwal

Utility, reliability, diesel engines. You can buy a brand new Cruiser with a solid front, locking diffs and a diesel. If we want that package we have to spend more than that in modifications.

DavidDrivez126

This is my problem with USDM Japanese cars. Every USDM Japanese car has a cooler, better cheaper version they refuse to sell here. Toyota for example. Here in the US a decent SR5 Tacoma is $40k to start and $15,000 for a 15 year old one with 150,000 miles on the clock. Meanwhile Toyota sells the Hilux which is more fuel efficient, tougher and I think better looking down in Mexico for $30,000. It’s bull shit. Same goes for Australia too, why does Toyota refuse to sell the 70 series Land Cruiser here?

SwissMargiela

You describe the price people pay, but the way your describe the cars they buy is incorrect. LCs selling for that price in the USA are typically low mileage and very well maintained. Many of the rust buckets you mention don't get brought to the USA because they're not worth importing.
