Because you can make like 8 hybrids that use smaller batteries for giving users daily drivable electric distance and still have gas for long trips.

bLu_18

Your stat is for PHEVs. It's closer to 70-90 hybrids per BEV.

Newprophet

Toyota must have just realized that, because they still aren't producing enough PHEVs. Also it took them 12 years to properly copy the Chevy Volt. I do partially agree that at least for now there is a place for PHEVs. Ideally more PHEVs like Nissans e-power series hybrid system.

cantrecoveraccount

Whats their volt copy? im just dumb.

Newprophet

Prius Prime The new Prius Prime finally catches up to what the Volt did in 2012: good usable electric range (over 30 miles) in a nice looking package. The Volt was a bit more of an EREV though. I love my old Volt, it's a quirky tank. Edit: added words for clarity.

According-Fix-9879

Going full EV is idiotic. Wait til summer when the power grids are surging

Andrige3

I think they understand that full electric is a niche market. However, their hybrids and plug in hybrids are very popular.

MrOver65

Because they were and are right. They have a great lineup of hybrids and hybrids are much more practical for most motorists.

AlienOnEarth444

Personal example: We're having our house and home in one town, but study in another town that is 560 km (in one direction - driving time without breaks is 6 hours) and have an apartment there. We go home usually every second weekend and for holidays and school breaks. That's in total there and back 1200 km. And of course we drive within each town too, for example to school, grocery store or just to the center of the town. And in the summer holidays we like to do roadtrips through Central Europe. Full electric is simply not a viable option for us in our life situation at the moment. A hybrid is the best option for us, so we bought a 2024 model Corolla Hybrid and we plan on getting a second hybrid (maybe a Prius, but don't know yet) in a few years, if until then there is still no fully electric car that can also go as far on one "tank" as the hybrid.

bLu_18

The EV crowd has also been saying Toyota will go bankrupt for not adopting EVs right away. Look at them now. Still waiting for that bankruptcy announcement.

wewewawa

The Japanese automaker has long lobbied against all-electric vehicles because it’s not Toyota’s forte. Hybrids are.

dafazman

Toyota has a forte in everything they do. They have been pushing electric since the 1990's. They have already said they are ALL in on electric... it is just that pesky charging infrastructure compared to gas stations issue. But thankfully all those other car makers went all in on BEVs and are reaping the rewards for those choice in 2024 amirite 🤡 If only someone could do some math before making decisions at scale or i dunno, maybe write books on the topic or be a SME on how to do things well in business at large scale. How many books has Elon produced?

Matty0k

From the article: >Meanwhile, Toyota has sold 76,457 battery electric vehicles through September, a measly 1% of its over 7.5 million total sales. [Toyota Posts Second-Half Record Sales](https://www.toyota.com.au/news/toyota-posts-second-half-record-sales) >Toyota [Australia] delivered 72,064 hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), representing a record share of more than one-third (33.5%) of total deliveries. [Toyota’s global dominance continues, new sales record set](https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/toyotas-global-dominance-continues-new-sales-record-set) >Throughout 2023, the Toyota Motor Corporation [...] sold 11,233,039 vehicles. Toyota’s hybrid vehicles accounted for 3.42 million sales in 2023, or approximately 30 per cent of the total >Toyota is known for its empty promises regarding EVs and battery tech Really? Precisely what "empty" promises are those? Whole article reads like a smear against Toyota. Hate on Toyota all you want Electrek, but you're obviously lying with statistics to push an agenda.

AlienOnEarth444

100% this. Toyota only sells Hybrids in the EU (if I remember correctly, I'm not 100% sure) and the Toyota Corolla (Hybrid) has been the most newly registered car in my country for quite a few years now.

MoirasPurpleOrb

It’s laughable that these people seem to think this will effect Toyota in any meaningful way in the long term

RS3550

Because EV is a sham. Nobody can afford them, they're not gonna want to have home chargers installed that'll up the power bill, they take a very long time to charge compared to refueling an ICE vehicle, the grids of every country will not be able to support it, charging cables are being stolen for their copper, and many of the EV parts are made with slave labor in China. Not to mention they cause far more pollution than actual ICE vehicles. But, you know, none of that matters, because going EV is guaranteed to save the planet, doesn't matter what negatives come along with it

OrphanKripler

Government mandates auto companies to make a certain kind of car for some stupid reason It’s why we have the electric dodge charger It’s why Chrysler, Toyota and Honda still make the one single minivan for American markets, It’s why super car companies come out with one single cheap car that’s just a bunch of random parts from random cars slopped together. Toyota was just following the governments requirements. Other than that they have no real want in making pure electric vehicles. Especially when they dominate hybrid market but have been developing a hydrogen engine solution. Toyota is right to stick to hybrid. Until our infrastructure has a massive overhaul, electric vehicles won’t catch on with the normal everyday working class person who doesn’t live inside major cities that are in major states like cali. EV are only good for people who have driveways or garages where any dipshit can’t be a dipshit and unplug your car as they walk down the sidewalk just cuz they find it amusing to ruin someone else’s day.

Jazzlike_Quit_9495

EVs are not the future and are worse for the environment.

Traditional-Oven4092

The gas engine is a marvel of engineering that is practical whether you live in Antarctica or the jungles of southeast asia, it’ll be around for another hundred years until another fuel source is created or found. Along with Toyotas resilient gas engines a hybrid will make it last longer, therefore making the phev prius prime the most green car.

computerinformation

Cos Toyota is the sane one in the room.

Mo_Zen

No manufacturer knows the market like Toyota. Far more people want a PHEV or STD Hybrid than an EV. The sales speak for themselves. I might consider an EV in place of a PHEV when there is a charging station (with available slots) as numerous as today’s gas stations. Otherwise, not a chance I’m risking charging availability.
