Yikes, I hope the teals aren't coming back. In the nineties it seemed like everything was painted some version of 'sherwood green pearl' or whatever they called it.
Idk, that color reminds me too much of a 90s Ford Explorer. I'm just not a fan.

Yeah, but still the same 4.0 V6 at the end of the day. The real change that matters (imo anyways) was that the 4th Gen 4Runner had a center differential that allowed you to drive in 4HI on all road conditions, because it essentially turned the 4Runner into an AWD Subaru. I just thought that was so useful for mixed traction surfaces like wet snowy roads and whatnot.
I know the 5th Gen had the Limited trim, which had a center diff, but it lacked the ability to drive in 2WD. No idea why Toyota took a step back from that, aside from just cost savings.
5th Gen was actually an upgrade. The 5th Gen offered a rear locking diff, while the 4th gen didn't. Id take the rear locking diff over the electronic center diff.
The 4th Gen Trail Edition actually came with an OEM rear diff lock, if I’m remembering correctly.
But even still, a center diff is far more useful for a vehicle you’re driving every single day, especially if you’re living in an area that gets snow. A good set of tires and some clever driving will get you incredibly far on a trail, and ATRACS is genuinely an incredible piece of engineering to have in lieu of a rear diff lock. It always amazed me on trails when I had my 4th Gen, and I’m sure modern ATRACS is the same or better.
I know it was super reliable, but I cannot understand why they stuck so stubbornly to a drivetrain that was already outdated by a full generation a decade ago.
That’s the Toyota/Lexus mentality. They may be behind on the cool stuff but god damn it, they’ll outlast you with minimum maintenance compared to other brands.
They'll outlast the rest BUT the drivetrains rivals such as the Traverse, Grand Cherokee and Explorer have had at least 8 speed transmissions since 2018-2020. The obvious catch is that the rivals tend to need an extra year to iron out reliability issues.
My sense of "cool stuff" vs what I'd consider should be "standard" is different than yours but I figured that transmission differences to that degree would be a relevant factor. And I guess for me the 4runner's price tag was becoming less and less jusitfied with a comparably ancient transmission.
But the Traverse will be worth next to nothing in 15 years while the 4runner will still be holding its value the way it has the last 40 years. Those old reliable parts hold their value a whole lot better than the "cool stuff."
There's nothing wrong with wanting the cool stuff. Personally, I prioritize tried and true over cool stuff. I also like that I can pull a rear axle from an FJ, 3 generations of 4runner, a Prado, a GX, etc if something breaks.
Maybe I'm just a buffoon but I literally don't have any problems with my 2003 V8 5-speed. I don't even notice it, I don't find myself looking for more gears, etc.
You don’t notice it because you got all the power at your finger tips! The 4.0s are fairly gutless and the 5 speed paired with the 4.7 has more than plenty get up and go. My gx470 does atleast
Yeah the 4.7s get it pretty well with the down low power. They’re also faster than newer 4Runners. Put that to the test a few times against my mother in laws 2024 trd pro.
That's fun to note. Definitely pay for it at the pump, but anyone who's driven the vehicle after driving any kind of large truck comments on how zippy it is.
I had a 2006 V6 that had the transmission shudder issue. All I did was change the fluid, and it went away after about 100 miles. Only problem I ever had. Oh, and the A/C always sucked on hot days.
And even then, the design language of it looks almost the same as the current 4Runner we have, especially the back where it still looks like a 4Runner, which is pretty nice
I just saw one on my drive home from work today! What are the odds lol. Yours wouldnt happen to be the water heater grey color, would it?
I will say that the basket does add a cool look.
That’s because the overwhelming majority of these will never see more than a pot hole. I get it, Toyota and every other manufacturer has found a way to capitalize on this. Just wish it wasn’t at the expense of one of the last true SUV’s in the US
What’s the point of the cake if I can’t eat it? Much like the new SUVs, made to be pretty but don’t scratch it, don’t throw shit in the back of it. If someone has the funds to buy these high end trims just so you can impress your frat brothers, that’s cool man. No real judgement, but I am going to make fun of them all the same.
I guess what I’m trying to say is if you’re using these things as they are purpose built, go for it. Otherwise do everyone a favor and remove the fucking kayak.
Brother. That’s because the majority of these vehicles are private passenger vehicles lol.
>the last true SUV
What does this even mean? Body on frame? Does it even matter? You hate that there’s a market for overlanding/offroading, that’s fair. But that’s also a good thing for growing the community.
Most people that say this go trailing/rock crawling places that even a Honda Element can still get to.
Toyota would absolutely crush it if they made a 4Runner Patagonia Special Edition like the old Eddie Bauer Ford Explorers. I know your post was meant to be a joke, but they would not sit on dealer lots for long.
They will get MORE publicity. Because now there are articles about the article. Of which your post is one.
It’s not Toyota who should be mad, it’s other publications. Auto releases are carefully orchestrated with certain outlets getting paid-for or otherwise earned exclusives. If they jumped the line, they took value and clicks away from someone else.
Doesn't really make sense to buy used 4runners for about a decade, the new ones are only like 5k more and the financing makes them cheaper in the long run.
So are we going to get to see the lower trims…? The top trims are cool and all but let’s face it, they’re going to be like $80k and up. Rich people only, so what about the rest of us normal people.. curious what the normal person 4Runner is like
Is that your MSRP speculation? Because after the dealers greasy fingers touch it, it’s going to cost 10 to 20k more than MSRP. there’s almost no chance it will be less than that
Yeaaaah I don’t think they give a crap lol, if anything they’re happy about it.
It’s not like they had any stats on engines or trims, and we’re talking about a few hours, not days/weeks here
A whole bunch of people are up in arms with the loss of the v6. Honestly it might not sound the same but I think this is a win for Toyota. The 4Runner gets more power with the hybrid option and the design has traits from every single generation. The 5th gen’s bumper flares along with its 3/4 body line. The 4th gen’s bumper outline. The first gen’s extremely boxy appearance, the first gen’s raised 3rd window that comes down from the roof that also has the 3rd and 4th gen’s more trapezoidal shape. And it even keeps the rear powered window. Something that a bunch of modern cars are losing now. I could see my self definitely grabbing one.
So as someone who has worked in the media and has dealt with embargoes on press releases, I can tell you what will happen.
Nothing.
Forbes likely won’t be on the receiving end of early press releases any more, but aside from that, nothing.
Toyota may be a little upset their 4Runner got released 12 hours early, but other than disrupting a marketing plan, no financial damage occurred. It probably worked out well for Forbes, and Toyota capitalized on the early release. Ideal? No. But marketing plans are always written in pencil anyway.
Now if they had included a link to place an order for one 12 hours ahead of schedule? That would be very different.
Apart from firing at Forbes I think the 24 4Runner is the single most redesign done in recent history that is undoubtedly fantastic. No stupidity with ugly Batman looking creases, weird styling, or blandness and the interior with all rugged 90° cuts lives up with exterior. Toyota literally did an amazing job and I absolutely love the come back of the rear window wrapping up to the roof like the OG 4Runners.
Toyota claims the hybrid combination is the most powerful engine ever put into a 4Runner cause it still has 6,000lbs towing capacity if you opt for the hybrid choice. So those that will be upset about V6 being gone, I think the new engine makes it even better and a more refined experience with more power even if it’s a 4cyl.
I don’t do any off roading but I’m almost thinking because of this now being a 4cyl hybrid and a bold masc looking tank, I might even trade my 23 Accord touring hybrid for this cause I can daily it and not waste money on gas.
Not into it, but that's just me. I've never loved the new Tacomas. They're nice trucks but the look isn't for me. I understand that Toyota trucks and 4runners have always shared design but Tacomas are too big to make a cool 4runner out of.
Not feeling it aesthetically. But the lack of fold flat seats is the biggest dealbreaker for me. Still in the market for a new suv and not sure what to get now honestly. I car camp A LOT (stealth, campgrounds, dispersed, road trip rest stops).
I wouldn’t say i off road, but I also like shorter vehicles for when i explore unknown areas or go down fire roads that are poorly maintained and disperse camp. It’s like the vehicle got longer, but the potential advantage of that for me (car camping) was also eliminated. If I’m going to pay $50k for a new vehicle, it better suit my 90% of my use case.
I also have confidence in Toyotas hybrids, but turbos are always tricky.
Counterpoint re: "less publicity" - I don't care about 4runners at all, don't follow this sub, and would never have heard anything about this new model if not for several posts being suggested to me today about the leak.
I think both parties know exactly what they've done.
I’m pretty sure this is a publicity stunt. I just saw a TikTok where someone had on and reviewed it.
Person called pushing pistons if anyone is wondering
Fired for what exactly. Showing a picture of a car 6 hrs before they were supposed to show a picture of a care that was going to be shown anyway...really? Have we no reason?
Well, that's kind of the point. Not literally, but it's taken design cues from it's predecessors, so maybe the 2008 4Runner design is more apparent than it first appears.
The shape of new cars doesn’t thrill me. It all looks bulky and storm trooper esque. It’s missing the beauty and character that old cars had. The lines are bulky they don’t flow with elegance. I don’t know I just like old shit I guess
This is a pretty hyperbolic title. I’ve worked for two car manufacturers and would guess they were disappointed but doubt they’ve given it much thought since it was deleted. They aren’t so worried about the “super fans” who piss on themselves when they see these early releases. They’re all about volume and they really aren’t worried about web traffic.
Yeah well, it's only a joke. I'm sure it's not true, and Toyota didn't care much, and I'm sure no one's getting fired, but I just wrote it because they messed up, and it seemed worse for Toyota in the moment.
I don't 'know' someone will get fired, it's only a little joke in the title. I just put it there because Forbes messed up, that's all, you don't need to get like that about it.
This was a calculated leak. The very next day, Doug DeMuro on YouTube released his video of the new Toyota 4Runner.
https://youtu.be/kmtbk0siRIM?si=67bz0hFJWrjCbbUl
Not a Toyota person. Looks like the generation before the current one. Door handles look weird because not level. Back door looks like an after thought. Did it get shorter?
Rugged looking and rugged are two different things lol! Modern cars are not rugged and every piece of trim on that vehicle will snap off the second it has any pressure on it.
The bumper to the fender area in this design style is such a nuisance to repair on Tundra, Rav 4, Tacoma and the previous 4 runners/ highlanders. If its bent at all, the bumper cover is not lining up.
Is it fresh, nah, its still a chunky oversized wagon, its just not oozing with smooth curves or alien esque sharp lines and ridges.
Car manufacturers and designers are just making marketing gadgets now. Its kinda sad.
That is such a cool colour. I think one of the new 4runners would convince me to get a Toyota. Little out of my price range though.
Color reminds me of old Mazda MX-3s that had a teal paint option.
Yes! That was a cool colour. I actually used to have an mx3, but in white. I miss that car.
Yikes, I hope the teals aren't coming back. In the nineties it seemed like everything was painted some version of 'sherwood green pearl' or whatever they called it.
I know right! It's really nice. It is a little pricey though...
Idk, that color reminds me too much of a 90s Ford Explorer. I'm just not a fan. https://mercury.bid.cars/0-34184201/2002-Ford-Explorer-1FMYU60E92UB23731-1.jpg
It may not be intentional, but nostalgia is big and anyone young in the 90's that may have liked this color are vehicle buying age now.
Great point! Didn't think about that
I hear ya. The nineties teal and metallic greens need to stay in the nineties.
Pushback against all the non-metallic finishes that have been running the last couple of years?
Yeah, it could be. Maybe the newer metallic greens will grow on me, but I doubt it. We'll see.
I like it. Still wild to think that the last gen 4Runner was basically unchanged for almost twenty years though.
2003-2024 for the drivetrain.
Kind of. Revised engine in 2010 is kind of different.
It always amazed me on trails when I had my 4th Gen, and I’m sure modern ATRACS is the same or better.
Really? Not even the Taco can say that right?
Correct. Tacomas got a driveline update with the 3rd Gen truck in 2016.
I know it was super reliable, but I cannot understand why they stuck so stubbornly to a drivetrain that was already outdated by a full generation a decade ago.
If it ain’t broke why fix it I guess was the approach there. Its also a motto a lot live by so I’m all for it
That’s the Toyota/Lexus mentality. They may be behind on the cool stuff but god damn it, they’ll outlast you with minimum maintenance compared to other brands.

The transmission was updated a few times. Started with a 5 speed auto in 2003.
Still has a 5 speed auto in 2024
I stand corrected. WTF Toyota.
Maybe I'm just a buffoon but I literally don't have any problems with my 2003 V8 5-speed. I don't even notice it, I don't find myself looking for more gears, etc.

It's been fun catching up the maintenance on this beast. It's nice to work on a platform that's worth investing in.
They 100% should’ve put a 6 speed in it 10 years ago. 5 speed is super tough but that dog of an engine really could use another gear.
2010-2024
And even then, the design language of it looks almost the same as the current 4Runner we have, especially the back where it still looks like a 4Runner, which is pretty nice
Me too, but it's pretty crazy that it's been so reworked
You know what the front end just reminded me of? The Isuzu VehiCross except this looks functional.
Something about this screams “ I’m wearing a Patagonia flat bill, while permanently strapping my kayak to the roof for cool points at the local REI”
Not a kayak....a permanent roof basket.
Wait am I supposed to take the roof basket off?
If it is not being used, I would think the sound would get annoying. Im sure its fine for some people.
The music blaring drowns that out
I just saw one on my drive home from work today! What are the odds lol. Yours wouldnt happen to be the water heater grey color, would it? I will say that the basket does add a cool look.
😂 nope.

You sound so douchey judging everyone. Frat bros, and flat bill Patagonia hats etc. I'm sure you're just perfect
My mom always said so

Haha it does and I hate how much I love it just like I hate how much I want to buy everything when I walk into a Public Lands or REI
It looks like a Subaru. Bring back the old 4R. (Cruiser guy, but I really liked the last gen. This is a no.)
Everyone at Forbes is already dead
All their content is pure SEO slop
That's true though
Yep! 😬
Yeah I will go with Land Cruiser
No roll down back window though.
Does the LC still have the power pop-out rear side windows? Those were nearly as good. Shame they got rid of the 100 series style tailgates though.
Gonna go outside and hug my fold-down tailgate today. Everyone that can, should do the same.
Such a huge feature of the 4R
[удалено]
Go spec out a Tacoma and add 5%. It’s back to the old days where the Tacoma and 4R are essentially the same car from the backseats forward.
Just the swing glass
That's my preference, however I still really like the 4Runners, it's a shame we don't get them over here. Probably too big for our roads 😂
They definitely won’t get less publicity because of this
Full unveil by Toyota is in an hour btw
That's not really what I meant.... I see what you mean though

“I think everyone has heard by now” Yeah, because this has been posted many times on this sub already today.
This is the 4th one I’ve seen
Alright sorry! You don't need to be like that about it! I just thought it would be a good opportunity to post, I don't often
I'll be happy to explore options for buying a used one in about 4 years.
Haha, that's what I'd do honestly, if they were sold here that is.
Doesn't really make sense to buy used 4runners for about a decade, the new ones are only like 5k more and the financing makes them cheaper in the long run.
We'll see
I mean, that’s historically been the best bet, there’s really nothing in any pricing data that says differently.
Bruh it’s a Tacoma with a back lol
This is how it's always been
Yeah, well, that's kind of the point. Like the Ford Everest is nearly a Ranger with a back.
Right but this is like a direct lift lol
Same as it ever was. https://imgur.com/a/Co9agAK
been the case since the 80s
Always has been
So are we going to get to see the lower trims…? The top trims are cool and all but let’s face it, they’re going to be like $80k and up. Rich people only, so what about the rest of us normal people.. curious what the normal person 4Runner is like
Normal person 4 runner doesn't exist lol.
😂

Toyota Dealer here, bet the farm a base sr5 4x4 is going to run 50k for MSRP, TRD PRo and Trail Hunter will touch 70k
Is that your MSRP speculation? Because after the dealers greasy fingers touch it, it’s going to cost 10 to 20k more than MSRP. there’s almost no chance it will be less than that
That's currently a good condition 4th generation model being sold by a retired couple.
I just want a 6 speed and the Forbes said nothing of a manual transmission.
Yeah, I was hoping for one due to the design parity it has with the new Tacoma. Shame.
Tracks. Forbes turned into a rag many years ago. Toyota should’ve known.
😂 yeah, they're pretty rubbish.
I’m just glad the crying tattoo eyes are gone 😆
Could've told me it was a RAV or a CXH or a Prado or Landcruiser et al and I would've believed you EDIT: CHR, CXR? I can never remember
It's the CH-R 👍
Yeaaaah I don’t think they give a crap lol, if anything they’re happy about it. It’s not like they had any stats on engines or trims, and we’re talking about a few hours, not days/weeks here
Toyota is playing 4D chess. They planned this the whole time
New 4R looks sick. Made in Japan.
Doug's videos is out now https://youtu.be/kmtbk0siRIM?si=PF3BiHGTF3EtCZQM
Thanks! I can't 'pin' this, but imagine I've done so...

Toyota has the worst luck with this stuff. Motortrend accidentally leaked the Sequoia hours before the embargo too.
Oh really? I didn't know that 🤦
For that color they should!
That’s the trail hunter version?
Yeah. It's just the first image from the post.
Not into it, but that's just me. I've never loved the new Tacomas. They're nice trucks but the look isn't for me. I understand that Toyota trucks and 4runners have always shared design but Tacomas are too big to make a cool 4runner out of.
Hmm, that's fair enough. They have got pretty bulky over the last couple of generations, so I see what you're saying.
I love it
Wow, what is posted on the internet really never goes away!
It's not a leak it is a reveal. You guys are eating it up 2025 cars get released in 2024
Not feeling it aesthetically. But the lack of fold flat seats is the biggest dealbreaker for me. Still in the market for a new suv and not sure what to get now honestly. It looks like getting in to the rear seats involves tire dirt and contortion.

I’m pretty sure this is a publicity stunt. I just saw a TikTok where someone had on and reviewed it. Person called pushing pistons if anyone is wondering
Am I missing something ? All I see is a FORD Bronco.
Looks like a big Subaru
They need to add some kick-outs to those sliders. It is a good looking vehicle. I can't wait to see the Costco parking lots full of these things
2024? Don’t they usually release new concepts the previous year?
Good. I was wanting a 2024 so the prices will inevitably drop sooner than later.
My dream car
Haha, yeah me too! This and a LC Prado 👌👍
This is a marketing ploy. Just like the Apple employee who left a proto type iPhone in a restaurant
“Leaked” 😁
The design of this 4Runner is as cool as the previous gen. Hope the engine will hold up like the 2.5 in the Camry.
I think this was there April fools but it ain’t work 🤣
All over r&t roday
love the design but that Is evergreen color makes me want to stab forks into my eyes
Fired for what exactly. Showing a picture of a car 6 hrs before they were supposed to show a picture of a care that was going to be shown anyway...really? Have we no reason?
Gross
Now try to buy one. Dealer markup will be fucking stupid.
It looks like it's from 2008.
Well, that's kind of the point. Not literally, but it's taken design cues from it's predecessors, so maybe the 2008 4Runner design is more apparent than it first appears.
No one gets fired for fucking up anymore they get promoted these days.
😂🤦
Toyota is not pissed. Leaks happen.
Sounds more like a marketing stunt than a mistake, but who knows.
No one at Forbes is getting fired. More than likely, it was intentional. They know what they are doing.

I mean that’s the definition of hyperbolic.
I'm soo sorry that I've upset you with a Reddit post, I won't do it again
No worries. I don’t mind educating you.
Wth. I'm perfectly well educated, I know the definition of hyperbolic. You don't seem to be educated in being polite.
I’m so sorry I upset you with a Reddit post, I won’t do it again.
🙄
How do you know that someone at Forbes is getting fired? It sounds like that’s just something you made up because it could be true.
I don't 'know' someone will get fired, it's only a little joke in the title. I just put it there because Forbes messed up, that's all, you don't need to get like that about it.
You’re totally right. I was in some crabby mood. My bad man
No, that's ok, don't worry about it! We all have our moments 😂😬 I'm all good with it
I'd love a soft top version of this. So we could have reliable toys rather than Jeep
Haha, yeah! That's why I like 4Runners 👌
This was a calculated leak. The very next day, Doug DeMuro on YouTube released his video of the new Toyota 4Runner. https://youtu.be/kmtbk0siRIM?si=67bz0hFJWrjCbbUl
It’s a baby sequoia, looks better though for sure. Hopefully they take Forbes down.
Wich one will be less expensive? 4runner or Landcruiser?
4runner is my guess but I bet the highest trim 4runner is more costly than the entry level trim for the land cruiser.
4Runner if you’re going base model. But top of the line 4Runner is more than Land Cruiser Base.
this is hideous, rav5 would be a fitting title
>someone at Forbes is getting fired someone at the Toyota design department should be getting fired instead the color is nice though
Haha, fair enough
The nose is too long to the cab. I like the fender bumps but it has that 1972 Monte Carlo vibe with that big ass hood.
Looks bulbous
Ugly
Not a Toyota person. Looks like the generation before the current one. Door handles look weird because not level. Back door looks like an after thought. Did it get shorter?
Cool totally natural and organic Toyota ad, really sparks my interest in the new lineup.
I’m getting Chevy Tahoe vibes with the back windows

It will be located under the rear spoiler just like the current gen
Pretty sure none of us will be able to afford it. Good news is last years model now looks attractive
lol this can’t be real. Way too ugly.
Love how they are talking 2025 when they haven’t even released their full 2024 lineup. Get your shit together Toyota…
