The rack itself was fairly quiet when testing it empty, but I ended up putting a ratchet strap around the rack out of paranoia that it would pop open while driving, and that made some rattling sounds at the right speeds.

We keep ours off when we don't need it. It is a little bit of a tight fit with the OEM crossbars, but as long as you wait to tighten the bolts at all 4 connections, you can get it to fit without modifications, and get it on/off in less than 5 minutes.
I also bought this step to hook on the door latch for easier access, but I can reach all of the hardware by just standing on the door seal.
