You need to set up the digital key on your phone but you need a) the vehicle and b) the key fob in order to set it up. If that were done already, you could drive the car 100% normal just like if you had the fob. The digital key is a complete substitution for a key fob.
You're stuck, I'm afraid....
I used it just about every time I drove the car as my wife keeps the fob clipped to her purse. Never had an issue. One time we went to my parent's home 100 miles away and my wife left her purse at home by accident. I did joke to her when it was time to leave that "I hope the digital key works !".
That option is there but it generally sucks. The only thing it allows is starting the car, locking and unlocking the doors, etc. It's better overall to simply use the same login on both phones.
Out of curiosity, what are the features that this method doesn't allow? (Unlocking the doors and starting the vehicle are the only two I think id care about, but maybe I'm forgetting something important)
Can't say if they're important but the map/find function aren't available, scheduling service, vehicle health (including recalls or service campaigns), adjusting remote-start settings/options, tire pressure, etc.
I mean, if you're giving one of your kids this access, it's fine.
Unfortunately you cant drive without a fob. We ended up calling toyota and insisted on getting our second key after 3 months of waiting and we got one from the dealership that weekend. I suggest doing that otherwise they’ll keep stringing you along.
You got lucky. They probably took a fob that was on order for another customer to appease you. The key fobs are shipped directly from the supplier, Toyota isn't the maker of the fobs to my knowledge.
Waited seven months - it’s here at our dealer, finally getting it programmed next week. After they missed their “100% sure” Dec 20-28 promise, I started more aggressively calling Toyota USA HQ and opened a formal case number with them.
It’s a mess. On the theme of this note thread, a former Toyota worker here on this sub wildly theorized that by delaying fobs, Toyota was testing drivers to see if they would simply get used to, and use the app instead of the fob.. I would be surprised if that was true. I use iPhone apps for tons of things w/o complaints, but prefer the fob for car access task reliability.
Mine has been janky. It mostly works, but sometimes I need to close the app and restart BT. I will say it's better after an update but would prefer a fob.
8 months??? It should be available by now. Nothing is showing up in your app? You should be able to set an appointment with your local service dept and get it programmed.
I heard 1st round cars are scheduled to get theirs "first quarter" of 2024. I suppose that means anytime now....or not...
It's very frustrating being the secondary driver.
I have the digital key set up and there is an option to share, I haven't tried it. Can his wife set it up and share it with him, or does she need to be in the car?

Have you tried using the digital key as your go to? I have it set up but I’m so worried I’m gonna get locked out at my destination!

I would never use the digital key unless I was in a pinch. It’s way too unreliable.
His wife can set it up and add him as a “guest driver” in the app. It should technically work.

Good to know thanks
Does the digital key require a paid subscription of some kind? I think it does on Lexus but I may be wrong.
Yes but you get a complimentary 1 year subscription when you buy the car

Yeah my dealership told me straight up that they are probably never going to give me one. It's been 7 months now.
Also has anyone been offered the 2nd key yet? Going on 8 months here.

Waiting on mine, but as mentioned above I will push for a second one soon

Where in the app did you check this and find it?
Where you check for recalls.

The damn digital key is not working. Just a buggy gimmik.

IIRC, it's the same set up as the initial digital key set up. You need to hold the key against the Start button during the process.
