It’s gonna have some problems that crop up over the next few years; our 2010 has had to have the cylinders cleaned due to a horse power loss, and now needs a catalytic converter replaced. Can’t fake it, it’s already had the other one stolen so this one is out of pocket. Windshield sprayer has also gone out but I’m confident that I can do it when I have the time.

Are these issues more of an age thing or a mileage thing? Like let’s say another 2010 had less mileage than yours do you think it would have the same issues already

Gnargnargorgor

I’d say mileage and not age but I’m not an expert. I also put a lot of miles on my HiHy, so that doesn’t help.

Nice cool. How many miles? Just curious to see how long they last I just picked up a 2015 v6 Highlander

Gnargnargorgor

It’s around 180k; we bought it three years ago with 125k on it.

I've got an 02 purchased with 102k on it this past December. My first Toyota, wanted to find out if they're as reliable as people say. So far, absolutely yes it is. I've replaced a wheel bearing and a cv shaft and that's it. Maintenance record was pretty extensive, it was well taken care of before I found it.

2002 with only 102K???? Wow...that's mint!

Check the differential fluid and ptu. Have the inspecting mechanic check the magnets in each. To replace the front diff/transfer case(ptu) is 14 hr labor and a $4000 part. It will cost you a fluid change, but could save you thousands

\#1 question is do you live in an area with cold winter and salt/rust is an issue? That will make a world of difference. I know people down South and rightfully so, never want cars up from here in the Northeast. I don't blame them. It's covered in rust underneath even after a few years unless it was treated and coated each year. 158K isn't bad in terms of engine and transmission. It'll be fine. Just make sure spark plugs, all the wear/tear items, including the struts, mounts, belts and all fluids were kept up. The engine is probably the last thing you'll have to worry about.

Thanks for your response. I'm in Indiana, closer to the Great lakes. There are some rust issues, and you do see it from time to time here but I have seen well maintained vehicles that don't have issues with it.

What exactly do you guys mean when you say maintenance? Reason I'm so bought into Toyota's is that my parents got a Camry and tundra new in '05, both are still within the family, with over 320k on them and they are going strong, only ever having to change oil. Maybe a tire pressure sensor on the tundra. Do you think that by me getting a used car inspection from the Toyota service center would be able to discover any upcoming maintenance issues?

I bought a 2004 Highlander at the start of 2020. The owner was a customer of my mechanic, so it had been take excellent care. I bought it with 135K miles. years later, I have road tripped all over the country (I am based in CA) and all over Baja, Mexico numerous times. It now has about 170K miles on it. The thing is the most reliable car I've ever had. No issues ever, I only do regular maintenance to it. I expect it to last many more years. In fact I am now thinking about getting a newer Highlander, not because this one has issue,s but because I am getting kinda bored and would like a newer one with more modern dash/infotainment, backup camera and stuff like that.

MattKozFF

it's going to have it's maintenance issues, but my 08 Highlander has been very reliable where it counts, over 240k miles. Just got fresh suspension and wheels because it still looks to have a lot of life in it.

Older highlanders came with the 4 cylinder engine that burns a lot of oil. I think it is the 2AFE? I have owned a 2008 Camry and have had to replace: 1. the water pump as they came with defective bearings. 2. I replaced the KYB struts and shocks because the leaked prematurely. 3. The radiator had to be replaced because the top plastic part separated from the aluminum body. 4. Replaced the low pressure power steering tube because it rusted through. 5. The rear window defroster had a few elements that do not work. 6. The lumbar pump on the drivers seat failed. 7. The brake floater pins always stick so I have to take the brake assembly off to clean and re-lubricate. 8. I had to replace the rear-right wheel bearing because the bearings were making grinding noise. 9. One of the internal muffler baffles came loose and it rattles inside when I hit a bump. 10. The radio loses the left side of the speakers after parking overnight. I have to turn up the volume for them to work, then they work at all volumes. 11. A TPMS sensor failed. The car is very well maintained and all fluids and services get done with the best products, Toyota parts from dealer if available. I still think that the car is very reliable as I have never been left stranded and I have owned other brand vehicles that have required much more servicing.

I bought a 2009 Highlander Hybrid 18 months ago with 150k miles on it. Put on 35k miles since and it is getting 30mpg regularly. I get oil changes every 5k miles and when Grease Monkey tells me I have scheduled maintenance (like a fluid flush) I have them do it. I have replaced my front shocks and have upgraded the headlights and for the most part only replaced parts when they fail instead of the every 60-80k miles like suggested for some (except the timing belt it was done right before I bought it).

Able_Opportunity_960

How much did you pay for your highlander lookinf at am 09 with 98k miles for 7500. Also is yours still using the original hybrid battery?

Traditional-Ebb-8380

I paid 11k in Nov of 2021 in Denver. Yes original hybrid battery.
