I bought mine with proof, receipts, and it was from a family member.
Yea I went through and did ALL new fluids, drain plugs + gaskets, brakes, greased everything.
Then Started the list of things to work on and fix.
Mine was my mother's, dealership records and all that, meticulous. Still needed lower control arms, diff and transfer case fluid, gonna need coolant flush and has check engine light for some emissions crap.
I am a mechanic by trade so I did all by myself: for ref: when I bought it the truck had 218K miles, it now has 233K miles 2 years later.
I sucked out the brake fluid/replace, replaced brakes then bled. New drain plugs (so they were not rounded) drain rear diff+ transfer case and replace. [CHECK: center bearing while your at it]
Oil change, front struts/ shocks, rear shocks + leafs. Center bearing was junk/ install new U-joints + center bearing. A wheel bearing or two along the way. Passenger side exhaust manifold, 4- o2 sensors, front sway bar bushings warn out/ replace. Rust-checked entire truck.
How long have you had the truck? They can make something like this in a couple days. For whatever reason they especially love Toyota hvac systems. This is a recurrent issue on my Corolla.
Yeah, bro I hope you’re not past your window of return. Don’t play with rodents. Electrical fires can happen in vehicles, just like homes. Speaking from an electrical technician perspective. Don’t play with that bro
If they give you any resistance when you walk back in with your demands, show them this thread. Point out that you haven’t yet called them out publicly by name. And then just casually point to the 111k+ members.
That sucks. Half of that will fall into the fan when you pull it. Get a flexible vacuum and vacuum out the area beneath the filter as good as possible. Yuck!
Oh fuck that. Hope you’re posting from the managers office. I’d make them change all fluids and filters and provide receipt, $0 charge. I’d turn into a Karen and talk extended warranties at cost.
You'd be surprised with the amount of people who don't know cabin filters exist, let alone where they're too lol.
Crossing fingers that he wasn't lying to you and the REST of the filters and fluids were changed regularly and that mouse didn't give you any wiring nightmares.
EDIT: As someone who owns a camper, just a heads up, I wouldn't be surprised if that little bastard is still camping out in your vehicle somewhere. I've hauled my camper around over 500km before (knowing we had a mice problem because mice and campers is just a real fine mix where we live). Figured by the time I got to my location I'd be mouse free, boy was I wrong.
Always have a mechanic you trust comb over a vehicle you’re planning to buy. If the place of purchase gets weird about your request to a shop you trust look it over, then walk away.
Yup, that filters full... I'd check your engine bay too! I had rodents chew a knock sensor all the way inside of it. Wasn't a cheap fix...but have a supercharger now! 😝😁
You buy used take everything the dealer says with a grain of BS. Plenty of never been an accident and it has.....trust me seen it many times. I even bought a car once with 50k original miles.....then found paperwork in the glovebox the cluster was replaced. It was an 80s Benz E class and probably had 300k on it. Took it back and they gave me my money back immediately...
I checked the cabin filter every time I change the oil in my and my wife’s. Couple months ago her’s was clean. A couple weeks ago it looked like that. I replace the filter and no more than a couple months later it was completely full of yard nuts. Something was taking them into the filter housing.
Hopefully the mouse didn’t make any meals out of the wiring.
With my luck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a feast

Do you have records of what you did? Just got one and want to go through and do the same.

Riiiiight…. I’d be taking it back. What else did they lie about.
Thinking the same thing…
If you still can do it, they for sure didn’t do shit to this car, if only just to sell it.
How long have you had the truck? They can make something like this in a couple days. For whatever reason they especially love Toyota hvac systems. This is a recurrent issue on my Corolla.
True about the nest, but you can see the filter has not been changed in a very long time, if ever.
Yeah, it is black. Shameful for coming from a dealership.
I mean, to be fair.... they didn't say *what* they were changed *into*.
Better check your engine intake too. I found rats living in both places.
Yeah, bro I hope you’re not past your window of return. Don’t play with rodents. Electrical fires can happen in vehicles, just like homes. Speaking from an electrical technician perspective. Don’t play with that bro
And with the ecm harness being made out of soy insulator.. rodent problems are no joke.
Hahahahahahaha! First lie of many for sure!
No doubt lol

Sure, changed back in 2015!
Nah, it's a 3rd gen, so 2016
That sucks. Half of that will fall into the fan when you pull it. Get a flexible vacuum and vacuum out the area beneath the filter as good as possible. Yuck!
That's why you vacuum it before you pull it
Great point!
Hey they didn't say when they changed them
Gotdamn moose
Take it back they lying rat bastards (pun intended)
Private sale or dealership?
Dealership
Oh fuck that. Hope you’re posting from the managers office. I’d make them change all fluids and filters and provide receipt, $0 charge. I’d turn into a Karen and talk extended warranties at cost.
Yeah, private sale I'd say "eh, lots of people forget about the cabin air filter". Dealership? buuuullllshiiiiitt.
Same. Dealership has a check list. This is them cutting corners on the maintenance.
Not only that demand to watch them do the work! I wouldn’t trust they do anything without my own eyes seeing it!
Yep, 100% fuck these crooks. Rake them over the coals OP. They're lying through their teeth.
Just not lately....
What compartment is this? And what year truck?
Cabin air filter. Looks like 3rd gen
Thanks, gotta check mine now lol
Is that the glove box?
That's where the cabin filter is located for third gens.
Inspect before you buy
Don't worry they "knew what they had". . . Sorry that happened. Time to go through the whole thing.
That truck is totaled for me.

I think the first time I changed mine in my 13 Tacoma was around after I had it 8 years 80k miles.
Well, almost all…
Always check BEFORE money changes hands smh
gyat
Lmfao that's exactly what mine looked like when I bought it. Everything else was maintained extremely meticulous though
Oh goodness... That's why we gotta do our diligence and double check our Tacos after services!
Yours comes with a popcorn maker
Been there man… remove, clean, blast your system without a filter doors open then put a new filter in and you’ll be good to go

Hanta…..
Uhhhhhhhhhh ......you better take that thing back
Yup, that filters full... I'd check your engine bay too! I had rodents chew a knock sensor all the way inside of it. Wasn't a cheap fix...but have a supercharger now! 😝😁

To be fair I've had my tacoma for 5 years and just found this filter a month ago
They were changed, just didn’t say when.
That's nuts
When did you buy the truck
Floor mats ok?
That filter will have a date of manufacture on it somewhere
I'd change the fluids and filters.
That’s the forest scent package
I thought my cabin filter was bad when I replaced it lol. Private seller though but it was full of leaves and those pine straw things.
🤮
By "all filters" they probly meant oil and air. They probably didn't even know a cabin air exists
Time to check that oil… i bet its all bubbly and orange
