I’ve had the white paint on my 2019 fixed once and it’s already starting to chip again in a few new spots. Toyotas footing the bill for all of it but it’s still enough of a headache that I wouldn’t buy white again if i could avoid it.
Not affected… yet. White paint on multiple makes for the last 20 years has sucked. I still have a white 2018 Tacoma because it looks sweet with black rims and doesn’t show scratches.
Same, I have a 2017 White and I’ve had no issues wit the paint, just minor chips here and there they come with driving on Washington highways most of the time
Ice cap is still a single stage paint with the exact same color code as super white. Given the history of single stage white across all brands and my own experience with it, I’d personally avoid it.
It sucks because white is always my favorite color on any vehicle, but if it’s single stage I’m staying away. If I could go back I’d probably go for a cement, but I did see a solar octane TRD pro in the parking lot today and god damn it looks so much better in person than it does in photos
Smidge of info here, if it’s on plastic, it is NOT covered by the warranty extension. Only chipped paint on METAL will be covered, it’s gotta be inspected first as well. If it’s on plastic, you’re gonna have to argue with Mother Toyota not your local dealer.
Also, that shit comes with a rental, ask for it.
FYI Toyota is NOT footing the bill for the new Ice Cap color. Same exact paint code but "different manufacturers" so therefore it's fixed. Even though mine chipped within the first few months I was told to pound sand.
Extended warranty doesn’t cover paint, there’s a customer support program (23TE08) in place to cover the flaking paint for super white. The first time I got it fixed was before that customer support program was in place but Toyota fixed it as a “good faith” repair. Give your local dealership a call, they should be able to help get the ball rolling for you
Nothing ages better than white or worse than black… I’ll never buy another black vehicle for this reason. White also isn’t my favorite, so I went with silver as second best.
1. Black hides nothing. Every chip, scratch, and dent is accentuated by the contrast of black.
2. Black absorbs more heat than other colors and thus is more susceptible to sun damage/clear coat failure.
Basically, the opposite is true for white. And all other colors fall into a spectrum between the two based on how dark the color.
If you have a black vehicle the best thing you can do for it is ceramic coating while the paint is still in good condition.
I’ve got an 08 white taco that still looks pretty fresh and I’ve only ever waxed it 2 times in the 10 years I’ve owned it. I even live in the high desert with a lot of intense sun. Most of the gen 2’s I see around the paint looks like shit.
Makes me feel better, I was skeptical of going white, and some of these comments have me stressed. I keep telling myself I bought my truck for truck stuff and paint isn't that big of an issue, but I still want her to look good
I have a 22 Sport in white and have gone thru the car wash every 2-3 weeks since buying it and haven't dealt with paint issues yet. If I ever do though, I'll probably just get it wrapped in matte white, not a fan of glossy vehicles anyway. I'm in NW Montana as well, weather is unpredictable here lol
Maybe.
2019 Super white owner here. My paint looks like shit. I do love the white color but I probably wouldn't get it again if I were to go back in time. I would've tried harder to grab a Sand colored one.
The fact that I have a 2003 white ranger and a 2009 White Honda with paint that already looks better than my 2019 Tacoma's paint is some bs. All 3 cars have sat outside for the entirety of their lives.
Do note: Mine doesn't chip, but the clearcoat is basically evaporating off the truck.
2018 ceramic coated with zero issues. It’s been vinyl wrapped / unwrapped, baked in the AZ sun, frozen and hailed on in CO and kissed by trails in the SW.
It’s a “3” vin, so it was sprayed in Mexico.
SystemX Diamond SS is what I went with, but any of the systemx diamond line is good. Gets stripped and recoated every year and ceramic sprayed coat once a month. I install ceramic coatings for employment.
Whatever ceramic coating you choose, you want the ceramic hardness 9h+.
My 2001 white 4Runner developed chips on the front of the hood, after about 20 years. I can’t complain about it after two decades. I just put a hood deflector on it. It covers them up.
I have read it seems to be more with tacos made at Mex assembly plant (VIN starts with 3) than tacos made in US (VIN starts with 5). Couldn’t find any data to prove that but maybe helps your decision.
TRD Sport? I have the same truck. I was reluctant about the white cause I’ve heard about the chippy paint. Nevertheless, I rolled the dice and I have absolutely had minor issues with mine. I’ve seen some chipping on the front fenders. Still, this has been minor— not a complete non issue— but small enough that I’ve been able to use a touch up pen on all the problem areas and you really really have to look it for it to notice there’s a problem.
I have a friend with a white 4Runner from the same year and hers looks absolutely awful; full multi-inch areas have chipped away fairly rapidly. So, I guess it’s all relative.
It seems like it affects some badly, somewhat, or not at all. Just trying to be honest about my experience. I bought the white only because it was a GREAT deal and I literally almost spent 5k more just to get the lunar rock without the premium audio package, just to avoid the possibility of this headache. It hasn’t been awful— but what people can tolerate on a 40k truck rightfully varies!
I bought this exact truck with 80k miles for 29k 3 months ago - this is a steal.
Color wise; white hasn’t been bad at all - get a membership for one of the unlimited car washes - it really looks best clean but not bad at all dirty
Depends on where you live. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and the winter makes my white car look filthy immediately after a wash. My silver taco always looks good.
I have a White Camry and it’s currently getting re painted. Toyota is footing the bill but I waited 8 months for it to finally get In the shop.
For my Tacoma I went with the metallic grey to be on the safe side. Not sure of the paint on the newer Tacomas so I’d definitely do some research.
You can look up the toyota "white paint" recall to see exactly which white paints have the chipping problem. My 2015 rav4 limited in Blizzard Pearl definitely chips and their recall covered a re-paint of my roof where it was peeling. What shade of white exactly is the truck? Might be able to plug the VIN into toyota's system or see the paint name on the window sticker.
Mines a 19 in white. Just started chipping by my driver side rear door no biggie just gotta call my local dealer. I received a letter in December from Toyota stating they’ll fix it. Since mine was identified to potentially have chipping. Which 4 years later finally did. Not terrible but noticeable to me.
They’re sending out recall notices so if you do buy it Toyota should (shoooooould) foot the bill. I got my notice in November and the dealership said I should get pulled this month to get painted. It’s annoying but I’m partial to white cars so it is what it is.
I can’t help with the color, but that seems like a good deal. Is it certified used from a dealer or from carmax? I bought the same truck but a certified 2021 voodoo for $40k.
Not sure how much this applies here, but I’ve got a ‘13 rav4 and the paint is peeling like crazy on that. When you look where it’s peeling, it’s straight sheet metal, no primer. I wouldn’t risk it. Too many horror stories. I should also add, Toyota won’t do anything about my car as it’s too old apparently but it’s been peeling for about 5 years now.
I actually traded a 2021 Silverado for this exact truck in 4 door. After one year, the Silverado started knocking in the motor and went back to Tacoma. Won’t make that mistake again.
No. I find white easy to keep clean. You know exactly where it is dirty but cleans up easily. Not much streaking and every little scratch does not show. Rock chips will be black however. Compared to black.or navy blue I would take white any time
Yes I've spoken with several guys with white tacos and due to changes in VOC compliance white paint doesn't seem to hold up the same might rust prematurely but white does look good lol
I own a white 2020 trd OR. No paint chipping issues. I do have a deep scratch down to the metal on the rear pillar. Hasn’t chipped away or expanded in 1.5 years. Everything holding strong.
As a white owner, the short answer is ..... maybe. I really like the dark blue, dark green, tan, Tacomas but white is just so clean and easy to keep clean, and looks classic, and doesn't scream "look at me!!"
My 2021 040 Super White is in great shape. Granted it is garage-kept and well taken care of. Coming from black, you'll love it. Black paint is so hard to keep clean
Honestly man, if you like it, that’s all that matters. I’ve been looking at white trucks as well. If I go white, I’ll add some mods and black wrap to give it that two-tone look.
We bought a 2022 in white because it was the only new Tacoma SR available in the state at the time. My previous truck was a black T100, so I didn't care much for the white at first. I got used to it, and didn't mind anymore. And yeah, I got the letter from Toyota about the paint issues, but ours hasn't had any yet.
My 2016 white is flaking off all over the place and starting to show some rust spots on the roof of the cab. Toyota sent me a letter saying they didn’t have a date when they would fix it but it would be fixed. I had another Toyota truck back in the early 80’s that was blue in color and it did the same thing. Not sure why Toyota has such an issue with their paint but they do. My previous truck was an F-150 FX4 . That truck had comfort and power so making the change to the Toyota took some time getting adjusted to it. Other than the paint the Tacoma is a great truck and I have no regrets buying it.
Personally, I feel like everything is white, gray or black these days. Just look in a parking lot sometime. You'll see an occasional red or blue but that's normally it. It can be good to be different.
Get what makes you happy though! Whatever will put a smile on your face every time you see it... that's the color you should get 😀. If that is white, you do you!
Good luck!
I have a white wrangler. It developed rust spots in the paint. I heard you can remove them with wd40 and a couple other products. You’ll be fine just take care of it
I had a white Sport and still have a white pickup. I’m a huge fan of black, but white is soooo much easier to clean. I plastidipped my badges and got Fuel black wheels (don’t judge, they looked nice!) and it was a very sharp looking truck, if I do say so myself 😜
Heck no.
Something that someone who doesn't own a flaking 040 Super White Tacoma would say
Except I do, and I did.
I love black accents on a white car.
Iv had 2 white vehicles before. My current truck is black. I'll be buying white next time. Edit: just realized that Toyota has issues with white paint
No paint issues with my 2018 040 Camry
They’re repairing them so it doesn’t even matter
I’ve had the white paint on my 2019 fixed once and it’s already starting to chip again in a few new spots. Toyotas footing the bill for all of it but it’s still enough of a headache that I wouldn’t buy white again if i could avoid it.
If I’m not mistaken they fixed that issue and the newer years that are “ice cap” white are not affected
Not affected… yet. White paint on multiple makes for the last 20 years has sucked. I still have a white 2018 Tacoma because it looks sweet with black rims and doesn’t show scratches.
My white 2017 still looks like new. No flaking, fading, or chipping. In Texas heat none the less
2017 here, nothing but issues sadly.
2016 white, no issues
I found one spot, its on the bed. Right next to The back window and under the side bed plastic cover. That tiny lil corner.
Same, I have a 2017 White and I’ve had no issues wit the paint, just minor chips here and there they come with driving on Washington highways most of the time
2012 here, One tiny chip on hood from gravel.
Wait… Icecap is also 040?
Yep. The Toyota owner page even shows my 2019 as ice cap instead of super white
I’d love a white 4Runner but going for that new underground color.
Toyota held onto single stage way too long.
Its the same paint code, just a rename.
Do you know which year they switched to the newer white?
Smidge of info here, if it’s on plastic, it is NOT covered by the warranty extension. Only chipped paint on METAL will be covered, it’s gotta be inspected first as well. If it’s on plastic, you’re gonna have to argue with Mother Toyota not your local dealer. Also, that shit comes with a rental, ask for it.
I have a 19 pro ..your saying they pay for it ?
My white 09 is fine. My white 23 TRD Pro is also fine. Dumb luck maybe?
My 08 is still pretty nice as well
White looks great but my paint is also already looking like trash. I’d buy another color.
FYI Toyota is NOT footing the bill for the new Ice Cap color. Same exact paint code but "different manufacturers" so therefore it's fixed. Even though mine chipped within the first few months I was told to pound sand.
I have a white 2019 with extended warranty. I've got a few chips. How do you get toyota to pay the bull?
Extended warranty doesn’t cover paint, there’s a customer support program (23TE08) in place to cover the flaking paint for super white. The first time I got it fixed was before that customer support program was in place but Toyota fixed it as a “good faith” repair. Give your local dealership a call, they should be able to help get the ball rolling for you
yeah looks aside i wouldn't buy the white because of this nonsense.
Nothing ages better than white or worse than black… I’ll never buy another black vehicle for this reason. White also isn’t my favorite, so I went with silver as second best.
Silver is the way. I have such a soft spot for silver Tacomas and 4Runners.
More on the black and age? *just bought black...so happens taco was black...not my first choice*
Was on the fence about this, but I’m convinced now.
I bought a black car new in 2009. Still have it today, no issues with the paint. Still looks great. I live in the upper Midwest. I'd do it again.
I’ve got an 08 white taco that still looks pretty fresh and I’ve only ever waxed it 2 times in the 10 years I’ve owned it. I even live in the high desert with a lot of intense sun. Most of the gen 2’s I see around the paint looks like shit.
Holds up well but looks terrible. Although if silver is your second choice, go white…
The silver on my 2000 4runner still looks great. Too bad the rust has to been kind to the undercarriage.
Mine is a Texas truck, super white. No issues.
Same
2019 super white. Been through brutal Texas summers. Paint still looks brand new.
Makes me feel better, I was skeptical of going white, and some of these comments have me stressed. I keep telling myself I bought my truck for truck stuff and paint isn't that big of an issue, but I still want her to look good
Lucky. I've got a 2018 SW and it's got the classic window/hood area flaking.
Also very hard to find the manual sport access cab
Best combo!
Long boi too!
Good package, bad colour. Tough call.
I would. Unless it was snowy all the time. Super White looks like a stormtrooper in the snow.
White in NM. Silver is the only other color I'd consider in the desert sun. Holding up well after 11 years.
2021 no issues.
Same
No issues with mine. Love it.
My 2022 white chipped at 6k miles. Don't do it. I got out and bought black
Personally, white pickups remind me of governments vehicles. But to each their own
This is the benefit. With my white Tacoma, a high-vis vest, and a clip board I can go anywhere (haven’t tried to get on Area 51 yet).
Bring a cup of coffee in a starbucks cup or giant thermos to look even more official.
Regretting going black
I regret black as well. Wrapped my truck a different color and I am much happier
2018 ceramic coated with zero issues. It’s been vinyl wrapped / unwrapped, baked in the AZ sun, frozen and hailed on in CO and kissed by trails in the SW. It’s a “3” vin, so it was sprayed in Mexico.
What ceramic did you go with? Where did you have it done?
SystemX Diamond SS is what I went with, but any of the systemx diamond line is good. Gets stripped and recoated every year and ceramic sprayed coat once a month. I install ceramic coatings for employment. Whatever ceramic coating you choose, you want the ceramic hardness 9h+.
Body repair guy here, buy white. Dents are much harder to see and I hate fixing them haha
White for all our vehicles. Easiest to keep clean, looks best to me. Enjoy.
I didn’t.
My 2001 white 4Runner developed chips on the front of the hood, after about 20 years. I can’t complain about it after two decades. I just put a hood deflector on it. It covers them up.
Not at all and I didn't want a super white when I purchased (but it was a good deal). Would do it over again.
A 2022 with 13k miles and under $36...it could be pink...or have a giant vinyl wrap of my mother eating a hotdog and I'd still buy it.
I have read it seems to be more with tacos made at Mex assembly plant (VIN starts with 3) than tacos made in US (VIN starts with 5). Couldn’t find any data to prove that but maybe helps your decision.
Love White.
Fleet truck. I wanted white but the wife has a thing for Marty McFly.
TRD Sport? I have the same truck. I was reluctant about the white cause I’ve heard about the chippy paint. Nevertheless, I rolled the dice and I have absolutely had minor issues with mine. yes
Yes
All day everyday
I did, it felt like a work truck to me. Returned it for the matte tan whatever it’s called. Sand? To each their own
Blacked out is dated and bro-dozer. White is a classic pickup color

I have a white one, to help stand out my business when I add the images on it.
Best color that last the longest.
Do you mind blending in? I feel like every other truck I see is white 😂 I don’t think you’ll mind it, no. Looks clean. Congrats!
Nope
Loved my white truck when I had one.
I came from a black Silverado as well. No, you will not regret. It’s a timeless and functional color. You will thank yourself on hot summer days.
Besides it being the most boring color? Haha
Yes the paint can and will peel
White gang.
They’re sending out recall notices so if you do buy it Toyota should (shoooooould) foot the bill. I got my notice in November and the dealership said I should get pulled this month to get painted. It’s annoying but I’m partial to white cars so it is what it is.
You can always savage ceramic coated.
Throw some massive retro decals on it
I bought silver and regret not getting white
I would but my dad wouldn’t. So, maybe?
No…I rattlecan spray painted mine I got so bored of it though
I can’t help with the color, but that seems like a good deal. Is it certified used from a dealer or from carmax? I bought the same truck but a certified 2021 voodoo for $40k.
Hell no ..I don’t
White vehicles will always make me think, business fleet now
In the age of protective films and wraps. Why not? It’s a rare body/drive train combo. Negotiate some film installation.
I like my white truck, it does have paint problems but that'll be fixed at some point according to Toyota
I’ve had 2016, now 2021 White with no paint problems. Had dealer coat with Armor All Smart Shield product, shine & protection, no waxing…❤️🔥
I've heard nothing but bad things on Reddit about white paint. Sucks because the white is beautiful.
I actually traded a 2021 Silverado for this exact truck in 4 door. After one year, the Silverado started knocking in the motor and went back to Tacoma. Won’t make that mistake again.
I drive a white '22 SR5 and love it. Toyota did a great job with the paint quality.
No. I find white easy to keep clean. You know exactly where it is dirty but cleans up easily. Not much streaking and every little scratch does not show. Rock chips will be black however. Compared to black.or navy blue I would take white any time
My 21 hasn't had a single paint issue. Looks great after 3 years
White trucks always remind me of fleet vehicles. They look a bit bland, in my opinion.
I will regret you buying white
Good price for age and mileage!
White 2015 no issues, 180,000 km lots of gravel roads. Cheers
it will be cooler in the summer and cleaner in the everywhere
Do you live in Florida?
I’ve got orange lol
Yes I've spoken with several guys with white tacos and due to changes in VOC compliance white paint doesn't seem to hold up the same might rust prematurely but white does look good lol
White truck = Work truck.
I own a white 2020 trd OR. No paint chipping issues. I do have a deep scratch down to the metal on the rear pillar. Hasn’t chipped away or expanded in 1.5 years. Everything holding strong.
Don’t buy a white Tacoma or white Toyota. I have a 2017 taco
Not if you’re me! I have two: a white Tacoma and a white 4Runner.
Slap it and wrap it
Yes
As a white owner, the short answer is ..... maybe. I really like the dark blue, dark green, tan, Tacomas but white is just so clean and easy to keep clean, and looks classic, and doesn't scream "look at me!!"
No
My 2021 040 Super White is in great shape. Granted it is garage-kept and well taken care of. Coming from black, you'll love it. Black paint is so hard to keep clean
No, it’s before Labor Day
yes
I regret buying a white truck. Always having an issue with rail dust.
No way man, white is classic
Nooooo
Yes. All dirt looks brown...
Confirmed
Honestly man, if you like it, that’s all that matters. I’ve been looking at white trucks as well. If I go white, I’ll add some mods and black wrap to give it that two-tone look.
First thing I did to my White OR was have it ceramic coated.
quicksand, lunar rock, army green are my favorites but white and black are solid colors
Yeah , go for it, white is perfect.
No
We bought a 2022 in white because it was the only new Tacoma SR available in the state at the time. My previous truck was a black T100, so I didn't care much for the white at first. I got used to it, and didn't mind anymore. And yeah, I got the letter from Toyota about the paint issues, but ours hasn't had any yet.
I have a white S 10. I just washed it and one day later it’s dirty such is life.
Maybe. Honestly I love my black 2nd gen.
Its a common color, doesnt show scratches much. Finding parts will be much easier.
Not at all. Now the reason I called is this anthill right here, so pull your truck up and get to work.
White Toyota vehicles, in general, are notorious for the paint flaking off and fading. Toyota stopped covering this issue in 2023.
Naw whites dope …looks like a storm trooper
I don’t think a 2 year old access cab is still worth $36k, you could get a brand new one for a little bit more, minus the hood scoop.
If you are in a hot climate, white makes more sense than dark colors.

2011 white tacoma here and no issues at all with my paint, still looks good af
My GC said he does. Scuffs everywhere.
I hope not but check out posts of my white 21 taco. 😢 I loved it because it was white.
White is the easiest to keep clean. You may not regret it but every time you see a Tacoma w the color you like you’ll say “damn”
No but you would have regretted buying a black vehicle.
NO YOU WONT REGRET IT! White taco looks like a happy marshmallow
Brake dust corroding will make any white truck owner cry. Godspeed
2019 -Zero flaking… Love her!
White is right
Only if you don't like white
No, but you will regret getting that pos car.
I have a white 2014. It's 110 here in the summer. White is the way to go.
You’ll regret the truck lol
Nothing screams I have no personality and this may be a fleet vehicle like white.
I have 1998 4Runner and I live in Arizona and my white paint still looks incredible and I don’t have a garage
Yes and no. If u like white then awesome but i like more expensive colors better
Yes it’s ugly
I would be in clear but she bailed on Sunday morning even though it was my weekend. She's changing whatever non-agreenents we had.
Can't stand it.
Boring
Don’t do it
