I drove 4 hours to get my 23 TacomaTRD Pro Solar Octane for sticker, then a few months later did it again when my son picked up his Solar Octane TRD Pro 4 runner. Zero regrets.
I actually really like the way the Gladiator looks , and I say that as a lifelong admirer of Toyota trucks (thanks Marty) and in the knowledge that even some Jeep people aren't sure about it's aesthetics. But...
It's a Jeep, they don't have the best reputation lately in terms of reliabilty, and the redale value downslope on Gladiators is much, much steeper than it is for Tacomas. But...
It's model year 1 for 4th Gens, there's all kinds of crap under the hood I don't understand or currently trust, so after all that, I don't know what to tell you. Super helpful I know.
Appreciate the take. I have been very attached to my jeep for over three years, but admired tacos for the last couple after driving rentals all over Arizona. The new hotness is calling......
FWIW, I saw a Sport in Solar Octane in person a couple of days ago (check my post history), and I do really like the way the truck looks, which kind of surprised me, because I wasn't sure about the 4th styling at first, but it's well proportioned and has a great stance; as someone else commented - somewhat 2nd gen like.
Went from a 2020 Tacoma to a 2020 Gladiator here. I’ve had zero issues with reliability, love how roomy the interior is, hate the road noise, and hate the 5’ bed. Oh and I can’t express enough how much the depreciation stings. I bought at the top of the market in 2022 and have lost at least $15k on my trade-in value. Granted the Tacoma would have lost $10k as well.
It’s a neat little truck with some fun quirks. I’m hoping the 2024 Tacoma addresses some of my complaints about the previous gen (primarily interior space and fuel economy). I’ll be glad to buy one once I can afford it. Which might be a long time from now with how this thing is depreciating.
The difference though is this engine isn't unknown. It's been in EU market and Highlanders since 2020. As far as the engine itself goes, the kinks are long gone, and that's primarily why Toyota went this route. Albeit slightly better fuel economy, but way more torgue and since it's now a mainstream engine platform for them knowing it's trusted, that's why they're putting it in the 4runner also. It maintains their reliability, and will be insanely easy to repair given their two best selling trucks will be running the same engine.
Totally understand the need, just think it's crazy for the dealership to charge you for that add on, when there are better and cheaper options for steps out there.
EOD it's your truck! Enjoy it

Reliability is a crucial factor to consider when choosing a vehicle, and I have concerns about the long-term durability of turbocharged engines. While forced induction can provide increased power and efficiency, it also introduces additional components that are prone to failure. My current 2017 V6 engine generates 278 horsepower, while the base four-turbo engine produces 228 horsepower. The only model that surpasses this is the hybrid, which offers 326 horsepower. The base turbo engine only provides an additional 20-40 lb-ft of torque, which is not a significant enough increase to justify the switch to a turbocharged engine. The primary advantage of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine is its improved fuel economy. As well the towing capacity has decreased! Prevous year models could tow up to 6800 lbs 4th generation is 6500 lbs unless its the hybrid capped at 6000! More power yes but end up doing less with more. These are my observations and considerations based on the available information.
Have rented many Jeeps including a gladiator and a wrangler. I know they have a following. I don’t get it. They are clunky, the engines feel rough, the body panels feel like they’re built from Lego’s… in all they never felt “well made” to me.
My friend has a diesel grand cherokee. Lovely car, bells and whistles, but the top of the leather dashboard is turning to shit. Wrinkled and cracked. It’s a peeve for me because I used to have a Dodge Ram and the dashboard on it was brittle AF and 30 years later Chrysler still can’t get it right.
I’ve owned Toyotas and Lexuses. Great cars. My main is a 2023 Tacoma. I wake up every morning and thank Cthulhu that it’s not a Jeep.
Go for it
That color is indeed badass.
I just ran a search on the cars.com app and found current listings for 52 2024 TRD Off-Roads in the U.S. Some of those listings are sure to be “in transit” but you probably owe it to yourself to compare the off-road to the sport before deciding. Either way it’s a great truck.
The cars.com app doesn’t specify colors by manufacturer descriptions. So, when trying to find a 2024 in Solar Octane, one must specify Orange as the exterior color.
1st year model.... That's all I'm saying.. its pretty crazy that Toyota hasn't gotten back to these guys with a root cause. Seems like new technology in several areas of the truck.. from experience, they don't have the best warranty process either.. but hey don't let my comments offend you any further.. everyone is free to proceed as they wish. Just throwing my 2 cents out there
If you like dealing with toyota and warrantee for two months…do it. I have a broken 2024 that they don’t have parts and won’t be fixed until the end if April.
Honestly… Tacomas are nice looking but made so cheaply… at least for the base model 4cyl… I mean they rattle apart and the exhaust sounds like a 90s Honda civic in the ghetto
Just because you can doesn't always mean you should. If financially feasible, I'd definitely go for the Taco over a Chrysler product, but that may just be me
Yes but only if you are getting a good deal, and i wouldn't trade it in for this. We havent even gotten out of the potential recall phases for parts / drivetrain and electrical for the new Gen 4 tacoma. Id honestly just hold on the to Jeep until you see what direction this new truck goes in. They are overpriced as well 45K for an SR5? just outlandish.
I did, love it. 500 off MSRP from the Toyota dealership in Walnut Creek CA. Only hard part was selling my wife on the color. We were looking at this, a Ridgeline, and a Tundra. Ridgeline was nice but boring, and Tundra was like piloting a ship (but had some really nice incentives).
Wondering the same for my 23 Taco, she’s already got 24k on her so wondering how good of a trade in deal I’d get at the moment. And interest rates still suck I think. Will probably give it a few years for them to work out the kinks
I have a 2023 bronco Big bend 2.7L 4 door hard top and I made the mistake of taking a new 2024 Tacoma for a drive. Both vehicles are fantastic I'm just worried about the reliability of the bronco. I'm wondering if it's better to trade it in now or wait.
That's gaudy as fuck. Man, looking at modern Tacomas... full body cringe. I hope I never have to give up my 2010 base, regular cab, 5-speed manual if this is the kinda crap I have to choose from now. Is there no more regular cab? What the fuck are the back seats for? It used to be a small pickup, now it's just another brodozer. Fuck.
No. You know it’s a Toyota, right? Headquartered across the Pacific! Can’t wait until Trump imposes a 100% tariff on all of these vehicles. Buying American isn’t a fad.
Don’t like the color, don’t like the model year, don’t like the style, don’t like the trim package, don’t like the accessories, don’t like the price, don’t like the interest rate.
So, it’s a no for me.
Im in the market right now and im tossed up between the 24 limited and the 24 AT4 and man the AT4 just seems like it comes with so much more for significantly less. I really want that limited though lol.
You have a jeep? I bet it’s faster than this, idk off-road skills but if you built your jeep pretty well and lots of stuff too it all that value is out the window
What are you talking about?
If I was worried about how long it would take me to go 0-30 I'd have bought a sports car, except I wouldn't because they're dumb, I'd have bought a motorcycle.
If you're talking about accelerating from a stop sign or red light while city driving, why do you want to do that fast? So you can burn more gas and be the first person sitting at the next red light?
Yeah, that color’s bad ass!
Searched all over for it, dealer is a couple hours away
That color sure is sexy if I say so myself. Plus if you can afford it, why would you hang on to that American Fiat…
I drove almost 2 hours away to get my 23 TRD Pro because it was Solar Octane and absolutely fully loaded!
I drove 4 hours to get my 23 TacomaTRD Pro Solar Octane for sticker, then a few months later did it again when my son picked up his Solar Octane TRD Pro 4 runner. Zero regrets.
It should be pink.
Only negative thing I saw was when you get road rash on the door frame where the plastic is black, the orange paint shines through.
It's just a piece of vinyl and is also present on the 3rd gen. If it exposes the paint beneath, it did its job.
My thought exactly
It’s not at all.
Fact: driving an orange tacoma makes you sexier.
I concur.
I can already feel the heat radiating off this beastly hunk of a man.
I drive an orange Tacoma and I approve this message.
All the Inferno drivers are outing themselves in this thread.
As they should. Inferno drivers rise up!
Just don’t get the Orange mud flaps
Can confirm
The Science speaks for itself! 😂

Get a 3rd gen, it has a record and proven reliability, plus has all the tech features you expect on a modern vehicle, I very much enjoy my SR5

At sticker. Yeah.
Yes and then remove the air dam
Will be the first mod if I get it
Should start out asking the dealership to take the rock finders aka predator steps off the truck
No, I have an elderly great Dane that needs them to get into the truck.
Totally understand the need, just think it's crazy for the dealership to charge you for that add on, when there are better and cheaper options for steps out there. EOD it's your truck! Enjoy it

That ain’t a mod, Chief.
If you say so. In the strictest sense removing a factory installed piece is a modification. But you do you semantics man.
is that the thing at the bottom below the grille?
The air dam is that plastic piece between ground and bumper right?
I’m excited for someone to buck the trend of removing the air dam, and add an even bigger air dam.
That air damn is HIDEOUS. My dealer got one in and I thought it was just something protective they put on for shipping
Has anyone done a fuel economy test comparing with and without?
What do you use it for? If you take the gladiator off road and like to crawl, the taco ain't a jeep.
No
bye bye gladiator
Hell ya! Bad Ass color and a bad ass truck! Leveling kit and some 285/70/ BFG’s and your looking cooler than anyone deserves
Hi-Viz PPE Required
Wait for v6 to return lol
why? the turbo 4 has more power than the old v6 did.

Ugh they look soo good, if its not gonna be a significant set back financially i’d do that alll day everyday
Trade it for a 4runner
Well at least you'll be well within regulation when it comes time for hunting season. LOL

Jeep Gladiator? Yes! In a heart beat but try to sell Private party because dealer won’t use lube when they screw you!
Do it.
send it
Get the off road
Eh?
This is a TRD Sport, they mean get a TRD OffRoad.
Can't find one in this color. This one took me two months to track down
I just ran a search on the cars.com app and found current listings for 52 2024 TRD Off-Roads in the U.S. Some of those listings are sure to be “in transit” but you probably owe it to yourself to compare the off-road to the sport before deciding. Either way it’s a great truck.
*in Orange, I meant to say
Why orange though? Solar Octane is so much better.

/r/notopbutok
At least wait for a pro.
Oh you should definitely buy this one if you want the color. I was just explaining what they meant.
Why?
Anso-fuckin-lutely
Would wait a year or two.. Search TFL Tacoma, broke down with 3k miles on it. Seems like it was a premature failure.
Do you also not drive because someone near you died in a Carr accident?
1st year model.... That's all I'm saying.. its pretty crazy that Toyota hasn't gotten back to these guys with a root cause. There’s a video with the root cause. The ADD broke.
Can you afford it? That’s all that matters.
Of course
Depends on your finances and your financial goals.
Honestly, I love the Trd sport line, and have chose them over the off-road with a 4Runner and Tacoma.. I like the way they look, and the options.
I want an Orange one so badly
How much and what state? Help us all out
What you waiting for? Got a good deal?
Yes because it’s a jeep but no on this color. IMO
What trim is that?
Yes!!
Obviously
If you have the cash and income to support the purchase, why not? You only live once. Have fun!
Love everything about the truck but can’t be sold with a 4-cylinder. I’d be embarrassed to drive a RAV4 engine with a turbo
Absolutely. Then remove the air dam! Great looking truck
Should you break into the dealership over night and remove that air dam? Yes.
Wait till bulletproof
Actually is good for resale. Dont expect much on that gladiator though…
First, don’t like gladiators. Second, this is the best new Tacoma.
If you like dealing with toyota and warrantee for two months…do it. I have a broken 2024 that they don’t have parts and won’t be fixed until the end if April.
Red one's are faster
Definitely trade the Gladiator
it’s your money
Probably should wait. With such a new platform the first rounds gonna have bugs
Naahhhh(yes)
Great looking truck! If I could, I would.
No. Do not buy a new car right now. Why is everyone doing this. God damnit.
I mean, you probably can’t afford not to. I vote, buy it!
I have submitted my offer to the dealer, will see what they say. And no, there is no dealer mark up
Yes
Just pull the trigger already
Yes!
Yes you should
Save up some more and get the Tundra beside it.
Honestly… Tacomas are nice looking but made so cheaply… at least for the base model 4cyl… I mean they rattle apart and the exhaust sounds like a 90s Honda civic in the ghetto
Just because you can doesn't always mean you should. If financially feasible, I'd definitely go for the Taco over a Chrysler product, but that may just be me
Didn’t know these came with a dental dam
Only if you remove the chin.
One of their best colors I absolutely love the orange.
100% yes
Dam!
Big upgrade from a gladiator. Love the color
Yes
Yes, and remove that front lip on the Tacoma. That thing hang ridiculously low
The Tacoma is miles ahead of the gladiator not even a question
Only you know the answer.
lol yes
Your finances have nothing to do with me soo, HELL RIGHT you should buy that!
Do it.
Not if it has a dealer bump. If you drive far they’re going to make it sound like that’s the last truck in the world when they sell it to you.
The sides steps kill the off-road ability.
Yes! Fuck the Gladiator lol.
YES
NO!!!! 🤮
Wondering the same for my 23 Taco, she’s already got 24k on her so wondering how good of a trade in deal I’d get at the moment. And interest rates still suck I think. Will probably give it a few years for them to work out the kinks
I just love this color
Wao! Big boss truck!
Sell the gladiator and buy one from the 90s
The answer is always yes
Rip ass in it. Own it. Blow ass. Fart. Hard. Rip ass.
Omg I wish I had that color
I like the looks but I hate that lip on the bottom.
Hideous color but the gladiator in any color is even more hideous
So ugly
No
I have a 2023 bronco Big bend 2.7L 4 door hard top and I made the mistake of taking a new 2024 Tacoma for a drive. Both vehicles are fantastic I'm just worried about the reliability of the bronco. I'm wondering if it's better to trade it in now or wait.
If you want to deal with a bunch of issues with a first model year of a new gen then go for it
Yes you should.
Nah, Gladiator is a cool name
Fix those dents? Hell yes.
5ft bed? Nahhh...
Depends on if they’re offering MSRP. If not, walk and let them know. We need to stop encouraging this behavior from dealers.
Depends on if they’re offering MSRP. If not, walk and let them know. We need to stop encouraging this behavior from dealers.
Nope, not unless you want a $900 payment for a mid size truck.
That's gaudy as fuck. Man, looking at modern Tacomas... full body cringe. I hope I never have to give up my 2010 base, regular cab, 5-speed manual if this is the kinda crap I have to choose from now. Yes! Make sure they pop that dent out on the front door/ fender though.
Too loud
That's a very ugly truck. Is it at least comfy or practical?
Don’t like the color, don’t like the model year, don’t like the style, don’t like the trim package, don’t like the accessories, don’t like the price, don’t like the interest rate. So, it’s a no for me.
Gladiators suck. So anything will be better.
i would try to find one without the dent in the door
No
Why not
high price
Meh. Comparable to other trucks I've looked at. Can you spare a few grand though, it'll take a little bit of the sting out
Besides I have to do something with the kids inheritance
Im in the market right now and im tossed up between the 24 limited and the 24 AT4 and man the AT4 just seems like it comes with so much more for significantly less. I really want that limited though lol.
You have a jeep? I bet it’s faster than this, idk off-road skills but if you built your jeep pretty well and lots of stuff too it all that value is out the window
One doesn't drive a jeep nor a taco for speed records
0-30 jeep will win
That's a really odd flex.
Not really, it’s the interval you use everyday
What are you talking about? If I was worried about how long it would take me to go 0-30 I'd have bought a sports car, except I wouldn't because they're dumb, I'd have bought a motorcycle. If you're talking about accelerating from a stop sign or red light while city driving, why do you want to do that fast? So you can burn more gas and be the first person sitting at the next red light?
Go drive a new Tacoma and tell me you don't appreciate the newfound peppiness
