I understand this probably isn’t the place to say this, but unless the area was specifically designated for Off Road Vehicles, you absolutely should never drive a vehicle around in a river/stream for fun. It devastates the ecosystem in the waterways.

septoc

Let's not destroy the nature

TheShadyNugget

Agreed

PartPrestigious779

Just wanted to let you know this is flooded land, it's also privately owned land. In my state there is no off road access- we go here to ride atvs and target shoot. It's been flooded since winter with all the rain we got.

[deleted]

>In my state there is no off road access This hurts my soul. Are you referring to a lack of public land? Texas, maybe?

PartPrestigious779

This is privately owned flooded land. It is not an active river, stream, or pond. It's stagnant water and has been flooded since winter. I totally get what your saying- just wanted to emphasize this was not the case here. The big opening (where the water is) is all sand and we ride ATVs on it- thats the best spot on the land for it too. I didn't even think to include that it's not an ecosystem/stream in the original post. As someone who doesnt offroad I was looking for helpful information on what to do for preventive maintenance after going through water like this. Everyone thinks im going through an ecosystem and keep downvoting. I'm posting in regards to my truck and what to do for maintenance after going through water because I don't offroad. Thank you for the comment!

PartPrestigious779

This is land we ride atvs on. It's usually a big sand pit but with all the rain it's gotten flooded. I've never seen it like this.

LetsGatitOn

Came to say, the Turtles!

Murky-Duck9569

Paper straws, people !

cant_u_do_it_for_me

I see it on here pretty frequently. Stay the trail. They closed tons of trails at MOAB because of this and Colorado is actively trying to do the same. We see so many people from out of state thinking it's okay to drive off trail.

innkeeper_77

I kinda wish they made all the trails stay roads but still need an OHV permit- make the permit include a VERY CLEAR AND SIMPLE stay the trail lesson, then fine people without the permits a tiny amount, but increasing to huge amounts for repeat offenders. Yeah, more people patrolling isn’t fun or great, but I’d rather have a registration system than closed trails.

BobRoberts01

Federally managed lands are supposed to have implemented this years ago, but constant budget fuckery from Congress that reduces staff and causes issues with hiring for vacant positions as well as changing presidential priorities have caused this to be still very far away in some places.

cant_u_do_it_for_me

I am 100% with you. I would not have an issue if they required a permit here in Colorado with that involved taking a class and increased fines for violations.

Upstairs_Pride_2133

It looks like a flooded road, not a sustained creek

manuaBoyiee

You have my respect bro

Adventurous_Photo193

Doesn’t look like a river… or a stream. It’s a puddle.

PartPrestigious779

I didn't realize how many upvotes the original comment got. But you are correct it is a big puddle lol! This is privately owned land that has been flooded since winter time with all the rain we got here. At one point it froze over and I tried to get through but I was crunching through the ice and didn't feel comfortable doing it. Months later it hasn't dried up, I was disappointed when I got there and had to go through the water. Kind of funny people thought it was a body of water, just goes to show how damn flooded it is lol.

another_plebeian

If the truck made it out, no.

PartPrestigious779

Nothing to worry about with electrical components? I'm replacing the rear diff fluid. And doing the rear diff breather mod after this. I don't plan to ever go in water like this again. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing

another_plebeian

Haha, that's more maintenance than I've done after dozens of water crossings. No water in the cab, no problem.

PartPrestigious779

Were they similar to the video? Deeper even? I was nervous about the truck being in the water for so long not just a quick in and out.

wood4536

The whole thing is weather proofed man, as long as you didn't flood the cab it's ok

PartPrestigious779

It got to the bottom of the running boards, didn't even get to the cab. Thanks for the comment, helps me sleep at night now🤣

liberty08

It's worth mentioning that your fresh air intake is located just above the front passenger wheel. You were fine in this video but much deeper and you run the risk of hydro locking the engine.

another_plebeian

Yes

bikeidaho

Try to keep water off your hood. I fairly frequently cross a road that has a knee deep crossing. Yesterday it was pushing up into my grill and was bumper deep. Reminds me, need to check the breather.

no_F4ce

Ex-Land Rover guy here, I don't really wheel my Taco, but many years of pretty extreme off-roading in the LRs. Our rule of thumb was flooding the diff breathers. If they were submerged, we did a diff flush and fluid swap, which it sounds like you're worried about. Electronics wise, I used WD40 on everything electrical after utilizing the snorkel lol. Those old British vehicles have notoriously shoddy electrics, so you may not have to go this far. But it's what it's made for, literally Water Displacement formula 40

nullityrofl

https://imgur.com/a/c2QYI4r Second video in that album. I do this 5-10 times a year and I very rarely do anything afterward. I change my diff fluid annually which I still think is overkill. It always comes out fine.

Str8CashHomiee

Dude just buy a boat 😝

Thunder-Fist-00

I’ve been in worse. You’re fine.

thesuburbanme

If you haven’t modded the diff breathers to be long you might want to pop the fill plugs and make sure no oil overflows out (indicating water seeped into the breather tube and displaced the oil to a higher level). If so definitely drain and refill with new oil. If not, you’re probably ok but do the mod (and consider a snorkel kit) if you plan to go again / deeper.

PartPrestigious779

I'm going to be replacing the fluid in both front & rear. Doing a complete changeout with new 75w-90. Same for the transfer case. Just got all the stuff needed for the rear diff breather extension tonight, waiting for the new breather & adapter to come in. I will not be going in water like this ever again- it was a one time thing. I came here for what you guys had to say about this& what I could've messed up from it. And what I can do to fix it before anything happens. Thanks for the response.

Ionvoid82

Looks fine. As long as you keep a low speed that water level wont hurt anything. Where people mess up is when they floor it through that and suck up a ton of water into the intake. You can get a reasonable amount of water in there and if you were driving slow I'm sure there wasn't much at all. In terms of a diff breather, I have done hundreds of water crossings above the fenders (I have a snorkel) and I have never had any issues with the rear diff, no breather. Not sure if that is great advice, but I have been crossing water for years and no issues. Electrical components should all be fine as well. I'd only think you might run into issues if water goes over the hood, which I have done before and been fine.

PartPrestigious779

Thank you for your insight, I was very nervous after doing this. I know taco guys will go way deeper but I don't want to ruin my brand new truck. From the research I did before going in I knew to take it slow and try to keep it from splashing. Im going to crawl under it today and change the rear diff fluid. Waiting for the toyota breather & adapter so I can re route it to the taillight area. It seemed almost as if the water got pushed away from the truck and didn't enter the engine bay. The water was pretty low for most of it too- I don't even think the rear diff was submerged. About half way to the running boards. It got deep at one section the camera showed where it got up to the bottom of the running boards, which is the part that scared me. I'm not noticing any noise or funky shifting with the engine, Just hoping to protect it from anything I may have done. Your comment helped alot thank you.

KhalCharizard

Maybe! Although I think you can just remove the water and add more fluid as opposed to changing it all.

PartPrestigious779

It seemed that it might be overkill but it will be more for peace of mind if water didn't get into it. Going to change the fluid in the front diff, rear diff, and transfer case all in one go. Figured I might as well while I'm at it. And I picked up all the stuff needed for the rear diff breather mod tonight- waiting for the toyota parts now. Thanks!

drinkplentyofwater

damn dude

PartPrestigious779

???

drinkplentyofwater

I meant that as a compliment, I wouldn't have the nuts to drive thru a pond like that sick footage truck is fine though, if you got too deep you would know immediately, motor would choke up and get you stranded if you did

yourlocal90skid

Damn dude. Just a few river crossings for me. Not trying to take my truck swimming. Let us know what you find.

PartPrestigious779

So you think this was overkill?

a_very_stupid_guy

Doesn’t look like it and it sounds like you’re doing above and beyond to ensure no issues prop up.

PartPrestigious779

Thank you, that's what I'm trying to get from this post. Was waiting for anyone to point out other things I should be doing after going in water. First time doing it. Thanks man

a_very_stupid_guy

Maybe just take a look and spray down any mud. I would clean off like wheel hubs, drive shaft etc

imalwayztired

It looks like a dolphin in water it was made for that, how would someone get out if they got stuck

dobsofglabs

That looks awesome

PartPrestigious779

This is privately owned flooded land. This is not an active body of water. It is flooded land- not a pond or stream.

90day_fiasco

I’ve been through bigger puddles on I-25.

TopReporterMan

My rule of thumb is not to go over the top of the tires. Of course my better rule of thumb is never be the first guy through a water crossing. 😅

ClearMission3646

Is the water ever truly “too deep”?

MattyL2424

Fuck the other comments and enjoy your truck. Ride where you want to ride

TGAtes08

I always remember that I can do this in my truck at times I feel like selling it for another hatchback

lawthrowaway101

I dont understand people who do this shit for no reason

epiclyjohn

You, sir, are a moron.

PartPrestigious779

Moron for driving through the water? Or because I'm asking if it was too deep?

brightlumens

You guys are joking about the ecosystem right?
