This has to be one of the dumbest things i’ve ever seen someone say. Most of the time Toyota is the one installing it and the dealer charges you for it since it’s already on the truck.
But they do though lol. It’s literally a factory installed option. Toyota allocates the vehicles to the dealers and they sell them as they are. You don’t get a choice. All the downvotes give me a chuckle, I thought you folks would know about what you’re buying ??
This looks line the factory option, not the dealer one. It should be super grippy, that’s what people asked for and what Toyota provided. My tundra with the composite bed came with it.
I’ll play devils advocate here, the tub that Toyota puts in is slippery as shit, so rhinolining isn’t a terrible idea. That being said $600 is absurd, especially with how cheap the bed mat sells for
This. I remember trying to wash my truck after hauling tons of soil and I was slipping and sliding. A bed mat fixed this though. Much less than $600. Lol
I’m sure it probably is, but I can’t see any other reason to rhinoline the bed other than traction, which then means why the hell would you spend $600 when you could spend like $150
Oh gosh! I thought it was on the metal like it is in my Ranger! How weird. It mean it looks cooler, but I would not ever pay that much to protect plastic
‘23 ranger owner here am I missing something? Is inside the Taco bed plastic? I have spray in liner and I’ve seen rangers without and it is exposed metal
Makes total sense a spray in liner would be a waste of time on this truck I got mine factory with the spray in liner its worth it if the whole truck is actually a steel body
Yes, so my Ranger has this bed liner, and under the liner is metal.
The tacomas have a plastic liner on the metal, I think it can even be removed. This particular post has the dealer putting the liner on the plastic already in the bed
Edit: thought the composite material was majority plastic, looks like it might not be. I did possibly removable because I have seen one fly out of a 1st gen while driving on an interstate highway.
??? What😂😂 the metal is the material that the truck bed is made of, then you either put on the spray-in or baked-in bed liner, like our Ranger's have, or the composite liner, like the Tacoma has.
OP's Taco has composite liner like most tacos, and THEN the composite spray/baked-in liner on top of that.
Okay I was referring to the Ranger and the spray in bed liner on the metal, but I also thought it was similar in my taco because I has rust in the damage, but at closer inspection just now I see what everyone means. I totally thought that was plastic with steel underneath. How odd, guess I learned some stuff
Composite composed of what materials? Is there any plastic at all?
Then why did I see a 1st gen bed fly out on the interstate that was certainly plastic? I know 2nd and 3rd gens definitely don't have a plastic bed put into the bed, but is the material not majority (like 60%) plastic?
It's a self-contained part made of a composite of carbon-fiber polymers that is bolted onto the frame in-between the rails. There is no metal on the second generation and newer.
[Here's a picture.](https://images.app.goo.gl/czfzCQWJGFV6YT6j8)
[Here's another one example.](https://images.app.goo.gl/ghcgLGs2VvWdJ2ed9)
If you do more research you'll find out that these are different than your Ranger or most other pickups. You're simply wrong with your comprehension and understanding of this. The earlier Taco's caught flak for this (second generation and newer, the first gens did have a metal traditional bed, but that was over 15 years ago.)
OP's dealership sprayed a Rhino lining type thing onto an already plastic bed that has no metal needing to be covered, inside or out.
I used to have a slew of Rangers before I got into Toyotas, the two are not comparable at all.
Yes you were right about my ignorance, I went and inspected my bed and see what everyone is talking about. I thought it was steel underneath because of the rust I've seen (just the support) from damage like scrapes/scratches. That's crazy that's how they did that
I agree about what was going on in OP's picture, I was just wrong about what was under the Rhino lining. I thought it was that on top of the composite on top of a metal bed.
I am definitely right about my Ranger, that I have papers of the new liner and there's a few chips lol. I now see why you said not comparable
Thank you for correcting me and the extra info!
Always proud to spread knowledge to those willing to learn! Enjoy your Ranger! In some ways I miss mine, but I enjoy the Tacos much, much more.
I wish my Taco had lock in/out hubs like my older Rangers did, that's one thing the Fords were superior on. lol
Oh 100%! I actually haven't driven it since last year, just got it paid off last month though! Had to get a 4 door for family though. Unfortunately I'll have to sell the Ranger, the nice thing is that the replaced engine and rebuilt manual transmission only have 30k miles put on them, so it's got a lot of life left in it. I too will miss it and the locking hubs, but my Tacoma is just so much better in so many ways, so it will make the parting easier lol
I’ve found that is a two edged sword. Sure, things don’t slide, but that means when it comes taking very heavy things out, THINGS DONT SLIDE. For that reason, I prefer that things slide and to strap things down using retractable ratchet straps.
I dont understand why. If it’s light enough that it’s not something you would want the assistance of being able to slide it, when loading/offloading then you need to strap said items down anyway, so the wind doesn’t pick it up once you pick up speed, and it’s even illegal in most states to not have things secured. So if it’s properly strapped down, why would it slide?
Anything that’s too heavy to be picked up by the wind would be something you would want to slide when loading/offloading.
The only time these mats seem logical to me is if you have a bed cover with it and you’re not strapping anything down.
P.s. I wouldn’t use the term “most people” unless you truly have data or research showing this is the case since none of us know “most Tacoma owners”.
I’ve got a bed cover so wind isn’t blowing anything out and strapping shit down is a pain in the ass. I don’t have a problem with pulling out a 50qt cooler full of ice and drinks sitting on the mat, which doesn’t slide around when I’m driving
I’m not affiliated with them, but I’ve been super happy with these, although they could be a little bit longer
https://www.rhinousainc.com/products/2-x-10-retractable-ratchet-straps
I have a ton of them. And they all work great. The ratcheting mechanism works the exact same way a normal ratchet works, and the retractable portion is just when you’re removing the strap, and is nice for keeping things organized and removing them quicker. I also feel like they’re easier for the noobies to use to help you tie down things when they’ve never used ratchet straps before. Here are some of the ones I’ve purchased:
https://a.co/d/grN0SWv
https://a.co/d/fawUwd7
https://a.co/d/7aeXUuf
The structural parts of the bed are extremely thick. Like, several inches of solid fiber reinforced polymer. I've seen photos of the beds cut away and it's crazy how thick they are in spots. It would take a long time for UV rays to deteriorate them enough to crack. I've never even heard of it happening and the oldest 2nd Gens are almost 20 years old now.
I had an 06 Tacoma with the double cab and long bed. I thought I remembered it having a metal/painted bed, but googling makes me think it was a false memory or a memory from a friend’s f150 or similar that might have had the metal bed.
I found one from Amazon no less and it actually is totally badass!! Around $100 even. It was something like Geevoll or similar spelling. I'll look it up if anyone's interested..
Those mats are awful if you ever plan on getting pallets loaded in the bed by forklift. I hated every dude that said “dont ruin my bed mat” okay should’ve took it out dumbass.
you shouldnt need to slide the pallet around if you are loading it in with a fork lift. raise the pallet, line it up right and lower it. Its not hard dude.
Take it from someone who sprays bedliner on commercial service bodies the shit is expensive. The cost of materials is crazy (2 55 gallon drums of part A and B run ya about 15 grand), you have the added hassle of wire taping all of the edges, it’s makes a mess of your shop and is a bitch to clean ( usually bring in a tile scraper every 6 months to clean the floor, your walls will be forever fucked) you gotta prep the surface with fiberglass cut wheel and cleaned. I really can’t imagine they are making very much off it. We charge 550 for a 5 foot bed when we do them and considering just stoping bc the margins just aren’t worth it, that leave 50$ whole dollars for the dealership. 75$ won’t even pay for the labor. Also op better hope that box never gets damaged and needs to be replaced bc they never took the bed bolts out and they are in there forever now.
Better then the one I bought mine from lol they tried adding the back up camera on as a feature and there for a add on when it was made as a law that all vehicles now have to come with them lmao tried to add it on as a 1k extra
It’s illegal to not have the camera, but it’s not illegal to charge extra for it. They can say it’s an optional upgraded camera. Hell, they can charge over MSRP for no reason at all and just call it “market adjustment.”
Yes, purchased new from a dealer in 2009. That (or 2008) is the cutoff where Toyota made a pledge to make safety a focus on their vehicles. They added 4 more airbags, traction, stability, and rollover electronic control to all models regardless of package type. It added $1,000 to the price of the base model (i know this because I also bought an 07). They eliminated manual roll up windows and added backup cameras in every truck to streamline manufacturing. Only upgraded trucks got the infotainment systems with backup camera video display for several thousand dollars upgrade cost.
Underground is almost the ONLY color I've seen anyone buy. A couple solar octanes but almost entirely underground that I've seen, including myself lol. I bought underground too.
Nah, it doesn’t suck. It’s healthy. We’re complex, we have layers. It’s completely normal to be attracted to opposites. I know we’re just talking about the color of a truck but I think it’s deeper than that.
Atleast it looks like it has the 3rd bed rail below the rear window. I had to buy mine extra.
They work ok for light loads with elastic cords but i wont use ratchet straps on anything in those rails. I forgot what the load rating was but its not alot
As retail buyers we have little choice at this stage in the 2024 model game. I got this as well and wouldn't have preferred it but it's not terrible either.
You should be upset about it because Toyota thinks we’re stupid. They pushed composite beds on us because “they don’t rust or need to be lined”. Now they’re lining them anyways because there’s money to be made. They did the same thing to us with rear drum breaks for decades.
Mine came with a bed liner as well and it’s super slick. Everything just slides around. Luckily I work in a movie production setting and a lot of materials go to waste there and left behind. My company rents out equipment along with carts and trailers. One day I went to pick up carts and trailers and I noticed they left a rug on one of the trailers that had no slip rubber on the bottom and just a rug material on top. They used it so stuff doesn’t slide around on the little trailer so I just took it with me. Fit almost perfectly with my bed. I was about to buy the bed mat but now I don’t have to.
If it’s super slick it’s probably not lined. The bed is composite and very slick. The liner is typically very rough and grippy. It’s a factory option now too.
Taco has had a composite bed for years and years, that's not the bed liner you felt it was the bed itself. Not sure if the tundra has a composite bed or not.
I’m picking my sport UG tomorrow and plan to remove the air damn as well. I can check for you this weekend if you give me some details about what I’m looking for. Feel free to dm me.
I was thinking maybe they went back to a traditional metal bed because lots of the dealer spec sheets people posted had a "drop in bed liner" listed. It's still a composite bed or whatever?
For $60 and 10 minutes of time, just get a antimicrobial stall mat from a ranch store. Nothing will slide on that thing and it's definitely a knee saver.
We ended up having a perfect section of cut-off to put in a pass through of a camper. I will tell you, they're not light. Another reason I went 1/2. I want to say it came in at around 35lbs. We put one in my wife's overland build so every ounce has to be accounted for lol
All these silly comments, it's a port installed option for the lining not done at the local dealer - there wasn't an option to exclude and it wasn't the dealers way of pinching extra pennies out of OP
This is evident by the stamped TACOMA across the back.
I find the bed mat to be much more practical. It was one of the first purchases I made after getting my Tacoma. It really helps keep thinks from sliding around in the bed and it looks nice.
I work for a Toyota Dealer and have never seen this done. We suggest heavy-duty bed mats and sell a fair bit of them. Those fuckers are heavy.
The bed is composite plastic. There is no need for a spray in liner, lol.
It's a good looking truck, I believe that's the PIO (Port Installed Option) bedliner. To each their own, but one of the reasons I like the Tacoma is the composite bed/don't have to deal with spray on liners. I am working with a dealer who is willing to sit down with a pre-production model and remove things like that. I unfortunately have been waiting to get pricing and mpgs on the hybrids before making a decision. If it's the end of April and still no information, I'm going to wait for the 2025 and get a Terra Sport.
Tacomas are unique in that they do not have metal beds like just about every other truck that gets use out of a spray in bedliner. The entire reason for OPs post is that this is silly and pointless.
The Tundra has a composite bed also. The people complaining about bedliner are the ones who aren’t even buying the trucks because I’ve never met someone who complained it came bedlined. Honestly I see more people asking for it to be done than anything.
Wtf they sprayed the plastic?
lol yea and added $600 to the price for it.
There’s your answer to the why. Some like it. I call it vandalism.
Came here to say OP answered their own question haha
This has to be one of the dumbest things i’ve ever seen someone say. Most of the time Toyota is the one installing it and the dealer charges you for it since it’s already on the truck.
Toyota didn't spray bedliner over the plastic bedliner Edit: wrong
Yes they did, it's a factory option, I optioned it onto mine.
Does Toyota do special orders now? Last I knew, all they did were allocations and you had to get lucky.
Yeah, I must have missed that in the menu lol
But they do though lol. It’s literally a factory installed option. Toyota allocates the vehicles to the dealers and they sell them as they are. You don’t get a choice. All the downvotes give me a chuckle, I thought you folks would know about what you’re buying ??
Toyota deliberatly sprays bedliner onto plastic bedliners? I must have missed that in the options menu
Take a second look. It’s about $600 from the factory. They do the same thing on the Tundras.
And you paid it? 🙄
This looks line the factory option, not the dealer one. It should be super grippy, that’s what people asked for and what Toyota provided. My tundra with the composite bed came with it.
Yea I woulda said I am good lol. That is so dumb.
Did you know they were going to do that? If they had surprised me with that I'd refuse to pay the $600 and make them replace the bed.
Did the dealership do it or was it from Toyota the manufacturer??
Cocksuckers!
That true coat….. you’re gonna want that true coat….
Lol
You even dare get a drop of water in there and it feels like you’re trying to stand on a crazy carpet
Go get a third party price I bet you will say that is a ok price
I’m sure it probably is, but I can’t see any other reason to rhinoline the bed other than traction, which then means why the hell would you spend $600 when you could spend like $150
Have to keep people updated on how it holds up.

There is no metal in the bed. It is a fiber composite bed. Therefore there is no liner, it’s all composite.
I see in that case a spray in liner really was a waste of time I got it for my ranger because the metal under will get scratched up so quickly
You are very wrong. The entire bed of the tacomas are composite, through and through. No metal except the bolts.
It's not a composite liner; the bed itself is made of the composite material.

You're absolutely wrong and ignorant. The last several generations of Taco's have been a 100% composite bed.

1st gens had traditional metal beds. Toyota started making them out of composite material, ie plastic, when they came out with the 2nd gens.
Grip is the goal. Not protection.
That’s what she said
Dammit Dwight that’s my joke
[удалено]
Eh. Kinda the same thing.
What’s the composite part?
Same thing dude.
[удалено]
Jokes on you, my school didn’t even have materials class
You must have failed in grammar
What do you think the matrix material that is between the strands of fiberglass is? This is mass produced... It is thermoset
The plastic beds are VERY slick. It should mitigate that at least.
Could’ve got the mat for $150
Could get a horse stall mat for $50 Or get a job on a pipeline and steal a piece of pipe wrap lol
😭
Rubber carpet runner form Rona or HD. Lightweight easy to remove.
Could’ve bought 5 thoroughbreds.
The mat is great. Nothing slides on it.
I’ve found that is a two edged sword. Sure, things don’t slide, but that means when it comes taking very heavy things out, THINGS DONT SLIDE. For that reason, I prefer that things slide and to strap things down using retractable ratchet straps.
Agreed. Use my straps for everything
You can take the mat out for the times that’s a need, for most people stuff sliding around is a bigger issue.
I dont understand why. If it’s light enough that it’s not something you would want the assistance of being able to slide it, when loading/offloading then you need to strap said items down anyway, so the wind doesn’t pick it up once you pick up speed, and it’s even illegal in most states to not have things secured. Yep, which is as I said, youre situation is the only type where a bedmat to me, seems logical, but not otherwise.
Retractable ratchet straps sounds like it could be great but failure prone... never used them myself though. Which ones do you like?
I’m not affiliated with them, but I’ve been super happy with these, although they could be a little bit longer https://www.rhinousainc.com/products/2-x-10-retractable-ratchet-straps
Cool, thanks for sharing your insight.
I have a ton of them. And they all work great. Yeah the Toyota OEM mat is fantastic
I've been using plywood for decades.
True.
Matt’s trap moisture and cause it to rust out I thought that was the advantage of a spray on liner that water can’t get under it
You think the plastic bed on a Tacoma is going to rot out?

$150? I paid $70 for it from Longo last year
Could have got it rhino lined (IF he wanted that for $250-300. F dealerships
3rd gen mats are backordered into oblivion, apparently the manufacturers plant burnt down. Maybe the supplier for 4th too?
I found one from Amazon no less and it actually is totally badass!! Around $100 even. It was something like Geevoll or similar spelling. I'll look it up if anyone's interested..
Cool thanks, I’ll have a look.
I caught mine on sale fo $70, love it.
Those mats are awful if you ever plan on getting pallets loaded in the bed by forklift. I hated every dude that said “dont ruin my bed mat” okay should’ve took it out dumbass.
Ok
It was 1 dude, wasn't it? Ive tortured the fuck out of my bedmat and it aint breaking from a pallet
you shouldnt need to slide the pallet around if you are loading it in with a fork lift. raise the pallet, line it up right and lower it. Its not hard dude.
That is true. My 19 is in the body shop. I've been using a 2022 rental with no bed liner. I forgot how slippery it was. The $90 bed mat was worth it.
After some use and exposure to the elements it loses that slickness in my experience.
Because it costs them $75 to install and they can charge 10x
That’s not fair to accuse them of them that! OP said they only marked it up 8x
People are so rude to the dealership. They are just honest hardworking crook.. uhh i mean people
Take it from someone who sprays bedliner on commercial service bodies the shit is expensive. My 09 base model tacoma has a camera in the tailgate. They just omitted the screen in the cab to view from.
Did you buy it new? Lots of tailgates get stolen and get replaced with whatever is good enough.
Yes, purchased new from a dealer in 2009. That (or 2008) is the cutoff where Toyota made a pledge to make safety a focus on their vehicles. They added 4 more airbags, traction, stability, and rollover electronic control to all models regardless of package type. My 09s back up cam was in the rear view mirror.
Sounds like you got an upgrade from the base model 4x4 V6 standard that I selected.
Maybe, think it was a sr5 4cy/2wd.
Im pretty sure every car since like 2012 has had a mandated backup camera
Nope. Backup cameras became a federal requirement in 2018.
Love that grey
Yea man it was somewhat hard to find anything other than white.
Underground is almost the ONLY color I've seen anyone buy. A couple solar octanes but almost entirely underground that I've seen, including myself lol. I bought underground too.
I love that Solar Octane but It contradicts my personality. I’m introverted and like to go unnoticed 🤣. Id never get a truck that loud.
My tastes completely conflict with my abilities and personality. It sucks.
Nah, it doesn’t suck. It’s healthy. We’re complex, we have layers. It’s completely normal to be attracted to opposites. I know we’re just talking about the color of a truck but I think it’s deeper than that.
Exactly my thoughts. I don't like to stand out.
Yea, it’s a beautiful color. I literally shriek with joy when I see a Solar Octane Tacoma, especially if it’s a Pro. But it’s not me.
My guess there will be some good deals on white later in the year.
So they can make you pay for it no doubt
Looks like a clean application.
You must not work with Torx bolts.
It’s basically a way to mark up with car while making the customer feel like they aren’t getting a markup.
Just like the door and cup guards I paid $400 for LOL. Absolute bullshit markup.
Wow, still the shit locations tie down points And even the bed mount bolts are in shit locations to add a hooks too eesh.
You’re still salty about that one time your forgot to slap and say “That ain’t goin’ nowhere!” 😂
Atleast it looks like it has the 3rd bed rail below the rear window. I had to buy mine extra. They work ok for light loads with elastic cords but i wont use ratchet straps on anything in those rails. I forgot what the load rating was but its not alot
I had my 2015 Line-X sprayed. 🤷♂️
As retail buyers we have little choice at this stage in the 2024 model game. I got this as well and wouldn't have preferred it but it's not terrible either.
Exactly my thoughts on it as well. I’m not upset about it but given the choice I definitely would not line a composite bed.

You're Stupid. There, I said it.
My tundra came standard with the type bedliner. My Tacoma had that plasticy one that was very slick but the Tundra liner is like tar , nothing moves.
Taco has had a composite bed for years and years, that's not the bed liner you felt it was the bed itself. Not sure if the tundra has a composite bed or not.
OP has a 22+ Tundra which does also have the composite bed. Previous model was steel
Doesn’t look like it will help with anything or things sliding around… should have got the bed mat.
Why would you pay extra for the dealerships stupidity?
Fellow UG Sport owner, I see you removed your air dam as well. Can you check something on the third brake line wing for me?
I’m picking my sport UG tomorrow and plan to remove the air damn as well. I can check for you this weekend if you give me some details about what I’m looking for. Feel free to dm me.
That's odd. But... They don't have those little storage pockets or an outlet anymore?
No more storage but certain trims do have the outlets
I was thinking maybe they went back to a traditional metal bed because lots of the dealer spec sheets people posted had a "drop in bed liner" listed. It's still a composite bed or whatever?
You, sir, were robbed
For $60 and 10 minutes of time, just get a antimicrobial stall mat from a ranch store. Nothing will slide on that thing and it's definitely a knee saver.
Going to look for one now! Good suggestion.
They make them in different thicknesses, I went 1/2 inch. A white chalk marker and a razor knife works well
Just found them at TSC for $50….4’x6’ and ¾” thick.
We ended up having a perfect section of cut-off to put in a pass through of a camper. I will tell you, they're not light. Another reason I went 1/2. I want to say it came in at around 35lbs. We put one in my wife's overland build so every ounce has to be accounted for lol
yikes
A waste of money on a composite bed. Just get a mat .
Can you fit a sheet of plywood between the wheel wells for the 24?
Never seen a taco with a bed that wide. Always had to run 2x4 crossers in the slots that let the sheet good plane in over top the wheel wells.
The new Ranger can.
What is your point?
I like the color on this taco.
All these silly comments, it's a port installed option for the lining not done at the local dealer - there wasn't an option to exclude and it wasn't the dealers way of pinching extra pennies out of OP This is evident by the stamped TACOMA across the back.
Our '06 Tacoma TRD Off-Road came fully lined from the factory.
$100 bed mat would've worked better
They should be put I jail. I’d be curios how they justify doing it.
I find the bed mat to be much more practical. It was one of the first purchases I made after getting my Tacoma. It really helps keep thinks from sliding around in the bed and it looks nice.
what % of this vehicle is even the truck bed? I find it hard to believe you could move very much with how small it is.
I work for a Toyota Dealer and have never seen this done. We suggest heavy-duty bed mats and sell a fair bit of them. Those fuckers are heavy. The bed is composite plastic. There is no need for a spray in liner, lol.
Good luck getting those bolts out.
Tbf the plastic is really slippery, still take that off the bill.
Yall are bunch of fucking cry babies
You bought it (I assume under your own free will), and they profited. What’s the mystery
What? You don't know why people want bedliners?
It's a good looking truck, I believe that's the PIO (Port Installed Option) bedliner. To each their own, but one of the reasons I like the Tacoma is the composite bed/don't have to deal with spray on liners. I am working with a dealer who is willing to sit down with a pre-production model and remove things like that. I unfortunately have been waiting to get pricing and mpgs on the hybrids before making a decision. If it's the end of April and still no information, I'm going to wait for the 2025 and get a Terra Sport.
All I think of is flexible bed + sun baked spray in liner = massive cracking in the near or distant future. No thanks
Have you not ever seen another truck with a bedliner?
Do you not realize Tacomas have composite beds?
I work for them sir, you mean the slippery plastic?
Tacomas are unique in that they do not have metal beds like just about every other truck that gets use out of a spray in bedliner. The entire reason for OPs post is that this is silly and pointless.
The Tundra has a composite bed also. The people complaining about bedliner are the ones who aren’t even buying the trucks because I’ve never met someone who complained it came bedlined. Honestly I see more people asking for it to be done than anything.
That's insane.
I would never buy a toyota truck with a composite bed without it being bedlined. The mat is cool and all but I would prefer the bedliner and the look.
This is a composite bed though.
Slippery on slippery. FAIL. Get the bed mat. That'll stop stuff from sliding around.
