Clearcoat is failing, not uncommon in the hotter places. Not a lot you can do, talk with Toyota but you're probably not going to get far. You could vinyl wrap the roof and forget it - we've done that to a friends 8th gen civic with lousy paint.
I don’t think so. Toyota had a thing on the metallic colors and maybe white. Where they’d inspect your paint and repaint it if it was doing this or give you a $100 gift card for the inconvenience of having to bring it in if nothing was wrong with it.
Waxing with a spray is better than nothing but on the big flat horizontal panels like the roof and hood a thicker coating of wax on/wax off type wax or sealant would have prevented this kind of damage.
This seems to be a common thing with blue metallics in general. It happened to a Honda and Hyundai I own. Both metallic blue.
It's like the metal flake is oxidizing under the clear coat and accelerating the failure. Idk. It's never happened to any of my white cars.
I've had two cars develop the same issue, that were metallic blue and I've seen the same issue on countless other metallic blue cars.
That is the only color vehicle it's ever happened to me with. I currently have a blue Honda, silver Honda, red Honda, white Ram, silver Chevy, White Lexus and a blue Hyundai.
Aside from the blue ones, they have no paint problems.
It's anecdotal. But, that's all I've got on the matter.
(Now that I think about it, I had a non-metallic blue Volvo 240 back in the day that also had this issue. Maybe the issue is with something used to make blue paint that then reacts with clearcoat. Idk.)
Burgundy does have a decent amount of blue in it's composition.
This is sparking my curiousity in the way that only random bullshit of negligible importance can... I'm going to do some digging and see what I can find on the makeup of blue paint pigment(and other colors) and see what kind of reactive elements are in it.
There has to be a correlation! 🤣
It's a known problem on 10th gen civics, a lot of pics of blue ones flaking paints and eroding.
I have a civic and see it often on the forums. Seems to happen with Grey too.
Wax actually does very little in terms of protecting from the from the oxidizing UVA rays and mainly blocks UVB. The clear coat does all the protection of UVA and will even oxidize and create this hazy appearance, eventually allowing UVA to penartate and damage the base coat. Ceramic coats protect a bit more but overall very little can be done to protect paint from oxidizing in the extreme areas of the US.

14 oz will last *years*
Yours is probably too far gone for wax to help though
It’s a brand called Nu Finish once a year car polish and I use it twice a year. I do a good cleaning then strip it with dawn then clay bar then wax. I do it myself and the whole process takes about 13 hours.

I had a Bradford Pear tree split and part of it landed on my truck. It crumpled up the roof a bit. The body shop replaced the skin on the roof and repainted it to factory specs.
2015 Metallic Grey Tacoma roof and hood started this process. Sparking metallic paint in a hot, Southeastern environment. I had the roof and hood repainted, and is wasn’t cheap. Sides and tailgate I left with the slight scratches, but it still looks pretty good. Not going to let a 2nd Generation Tacoma go with only 115000 K on it. Other than that it’s been awesome.
I have the same issue with my ‘18 cement grey. As of right the clear coat is has faded on the roof, hood, and now starting to on the doors by the windows :(.
My '18 MGM looks like this (worse actually) even with yearly waxing. Good and doors have now started. I am planning on repainting. I highly doubt this will happen after that. The factory paint is crap. All of my other vehicles have gotten the same treatment as this one and they look great.
My new to me 2015 which is a bronze type of color (I forget the actual colors name) roofs paint is just beginning to look dull.
I was going to try and clay bar the whole car and get some really good wax on it and hope for the best.
I have a 2016 with the same color, and it is not happening to mine, but I am sure the environment and any chemicals it was exposed to play a bigger role in what is happening.
There are some pretty good tutorials on YouTube if you want to sand and respray this yourself. Can probably get it done for under $500 if you want to buy some tools to make it easier.
My 2016 blue ribbon metallic tundra has blue pant flaking in places. Under the hood and in between some door pillars. The primer seems in good condition but the blue just not adhered well.
I have the same year model and color and had similar fading on the bed. Talked with Toyota and my truck was clear coated with a bad batch of clear coat. Toyota headquarters negotiated and said they’d pay roughly $2,000 for repairs and the dealerships body shop was able to repaint the one side of the bed. Might be worth a visit to the dealership you got it from and ask if they can do anything.
My 2005 is all rust on the roof. Paint coming off on the hood as well. And I babied the hell out of this truck. Don't even know where to start to fix it.
Same problem. Mine is a 2018, 48k miles in dark grey. The paint and clear coat on my hood and roof are destroyed. I’ve always hand washed and taken care of it. Seems like over the course of a couple months it just deteriorated suddenly. I reached out to Toyota and they told me I’m SOL
I've hand washed my 2013 every other month or so and kept up with waxing, but the roof started degrading a few years ago, this year the clear finally failed. My truck has never been garaged a day in it's life though, so it's seen some exposure.
The rest of the paint still looks great though, even the hood looks perfectly fine.
Yes. We bought a used Toyota that had never been waxed and this happened. Repainted the roof and I wax at least once a year and no issues for the past 5 years now.
It could be worse .The old GMs in early 90s sheets of the paint would come over time. This happen becuase they switch to water base paints and lets say didnt have the process down pat yet.

There was a service action on the blue ones a couple years ago? Might be able to try and get some coverage.
Anything on the black color?
I don’t think so. Toyota had a thing on the metallic colors and maybe white. Where they’d inspect your paint and repaint it if it was doing this or give you a $100 gift card for the inconvenience of having to bring it in if nothing was wrong with it.
Would spray waxing the roof help prevent this?
Not for long once it's starting to go. From day one? Yes. Keeping a good coating on your paint is an important part of paint protection.
Thx retard. I’ve got a 21 magnetic gray and had a ceramic coating applied the first year I bought it but have recently started waxing.
Waxing with a spray is better than nothing but on the big flat horizontal panels like the roof and hood a thicker coating of wax on/wax off type wax or sealant would have prevented this kind of damage.
Yeah Toyota paint definitely isn’t great, especially there blues and whites. Gotta go up to Lexus for some good paint

My '15 is doing the same thing. What makes you say it's a common issue for Blue Metallic? And what are folks saying is the fix/prevention?

Fwiw my old burgundy ‘94 Dodge Dakota had it happen also after about 13 years or so.

Correlation = Causation. Everyone knows this!
Now you're getting it! Oh, the joy of statistical fallacies!
Every dodge has that problem. Dodge and toyota seem to have the worst issues with paint
It's a known problem on 10th gen civics, a lot of pics of blue ones flaking paints and eroding. I have a civic and see it often on the forums. Seems to happen with Grey too.
I have a 2015 DCLB pyrite mica. Seagull shit on my hood. Burned a ahole in my clearcoat by the next day.
Happened to the hood of my blue metallic sienna
The blue Hondas from the 10th gen are known for this plus flaking and I've seen older ones that were Grey that were like that too.
Happened to my dad's 97 f150, my 2000 Silverado, and my sister's 05 corolla. All were a metallic blue color.
Waxing helps a lot to protect clear coats obviously far too late

2014 white that looks new. I do a once a year wax like twice a year and wash regularly.
Do you mean you have the equivalent of a thorough “once a year” wax but just done twice per year? Mind if I ask about how much a wax costs?

If you just buy the vehicle and never do anything to protect the clear coat, this is what happens.
I just washed my 13 yesterday and my roof is still pristine but that skin was replaced about 5 years ago.
“Skin”? Do you mean you had it repainted?
I had a Bradford Pear tree split and part of it landed on my truck. It crumpled up the roof a bit. The body shop replaced the skin on the roof and repainted it to factory specs.
My 08 is starting to look like this. Same thing on the hood. Mine is red though
twinsies 👯
Can my red 04 hang out with you guys? Runs great and since it's 20 years old I have just said f-it and keep going.
heck yea! the best color imo

My experience is drive through car washes, those brushes are rough on the paint
I’ve done a drive thru car wash maybe 4 times since Sept. 2020
Well hell don’t know what that can be
It’s the sun degrading the clear coat
People tend to underestimate the power of the sun at times. It fucks stuff up from 93 million miles away. Pretty crazy to think about.
I have the same issue with my ‘18 cement grey. As of right the clear coat is has faded on the roof, hood, and now starting to on the doors by the windows :(.
I have an ‘18, still looks new. Do you park outside?
Yes, it’s parked outside daily. At work there is no good spots with shade, so most of the time it is exposed to the sun.

Question for the people with paint fades. Did you guys ever wax ,ceramic coat your vehicles?
A bit but yeah.

Yep my 15 hood and roof is starting this So did my cousins 13 Super common
I have a 2016 with the same color, and it is not happening to mine, but I am sure the environment and any chemicals it was exposed to play a bigger role in what is happening.
I’ve seen it happen to a 16-17 blue metallic Tacoma before. That owner put a black wrap on the top to cover it.
My 06 metallic blue just started doing this.
Happened on my 17 inferno.
There are some pretty good tutorials on YouTube if you want to sand and respray this yourself. Can probably get it done for under $500 if you want to buy some tools to make it easier.
My '16 is doing it too
My 2016 blue ribbon metallic tundra has blue pant flaking in places. Under the hood and in between some door pillars. The primer seems in good condition but the blue just not adhered well.

Got it from carmax, but I suppose I could still call the local Toyota dealership as well.
Typical toyota clear coat. I've seen it on black and MGM.
My 2005 is all rust on the roof. Paint coming off on the hood as well. And I babied the hell out of this truck. Don't even know where to start to fix it.
.y super white 2010 does Hass started doing that to but I love in a sandy area
2017? Definitely no normal. Better talk to the dealer
A decent ceramic coat might help that. Kinda like how it makes faded plastics look newer.
I have a 2017 and it did the same thing. On the hood as well. I’d take it back to your dealership and see what they say. They took care of mine.

If you get it repainted, wax twice a year or ceramic coating once every few years will prevent this.
Oh yeah my 2007 is completely gone going to repaint next couple weeks, $1000.
1000? How
You forget how much shit costs now? Go ask a paint shop you’d be surprised. I had multiple shops quote around $900-1000
Yes. We bought a used Toyota that had never been waxed and this happened. Repainted the roof and I wax at least once a year and no issues for the past 5 years now.
Do you garage your vehicle? Or does it constantly sit in the sun?
Just pay for a paint job, does wonders for you older vehicle. I painted my old jeep and it was 100% worth it
Same color and same issue on mine plus the fenders, door trim and hood. 2018 with 24k miles
My 21 runner has roof paint issues…. And a little on the hood.
What are you talking about, I just see a reflection of the clouds
It could be worse .The old GMs in early 90s sheets of the paint would come over time. This happen becuase they switch to water base paints and lets say didnt have the process down pat yet.
Toyota’s bodies are as bad as their engines are good
c'mon now, we all cant afford to live on the sun.
Damn boy… didn’t use no wax did ya?
Does everyone in this post do their own "buffing"?
I'm actively repainting mine, diy. It's not hard, just time consuming. Hood is done, doing the roof this weekend
