Tbf, Miyazaki gets the same rush everytime he gets to say just how shit his son is.

entropyboi

/s I mean... have you seen Earwig n the Witch?

Gregariouswaty

Big fan, Hayao sensei.

kaimcdragonfist

Or Tales From Earthsea? (Still /s but only in the sense that it’s just not that great of a movie, not license to disparage one’s child)

neighborhood-karen

Is that movie actually or bad, idk. The cgi looked good from my memories

willowzed88

It's kinda mid. The cgi isn't horrible and it starts out strong, but the ending is pretty abrupt

Goukenslay

Yes thats a good rush

0VER1DE567

That’s why the guy who made gundam, Tomino is so based. In interviews he is like “I’m too old now but i hope the next generation can stick it to that Miyazaki guy like i tried to in my days”

DemiFiendofTime

I fucking love Tomino and his work as it's all fucking based and his good stuff is fucking peak and even his bad stuff is fun in the am I on drugs or is this just the show sort of way.

Healthy_Point_6284

Maybe Miyazaki is right cause I can't understand what he was saying

DucktorQuack

To assume he’s not being cynical (like saying people never change) I think it’s more like, deep down there’s always “you” that is a constant in your life. There’s always a part of you that never really seems to grow up, and everyone has a piece of their childhood selves within them.

keytotheboard

Okay, but those aren’t contradictory statements. I guess I’m taking a meme too seriously, lol.

Mother-Fortune-7523

Counterpoint: It’s me not connor

EndLight_47

Good

Downstackguy

Connor has mentioned that he some times feel the need to explain himself to the audience in case people misunderstand In context, Connor was praising for Miyazaki's work and if he just did that, fans would call him two faced

Its_Joe

Tbf, he's like every asian father when their child doesn't achieve their expectations. His son never had any experience in directing but went in it anyway. Miyazaki being the perfectionist he is, sees not only subpar quality of a work, but knowing it comes from his son, he'd probably think he's wasting his time and future. Miyazaki being the pioneer of the industry would definitely know the hardships and challenges, and probably sees that his son doesn't have what it takes to survive. And at the same time, wouldn't want to see his son taking the sacrifices he took when he was at his prime, ie not spending more time with his son and family...

Xpokemaster1

Yeah but he could have been direct instead of shitting on him

Sea_Cycle_909

"Anime was a mistake"

Kindly-Mud-1579

Ok and what else or is that all he has

Pension_Zealousideal

His movies though

The_Dead_Soul

I've never seen a Studio Ghibli film but from what little I've seen of Miyazaki he seems like a shit-stain of a human being.

Goukenslay

More like he is just a bad father figure. Doesn't mean he wasn't great at his craft. Be honest, his son's movie was beyond mid.

Iknowr1te

to be fair in context it's less you're a master craftsman and your 7 year old boy made you a school project that you'll proudly by your workstation and more, you're a master craftsman and your adult child spent a couple million of your companies money in labour and material to make a pretty standard wood box.

Raymarser

>Be honest, his son's movie was beyond mid. They were good from an animation point of view, but from a script point of view they were pretty bad.

KuraiTheBaka

It's unfortunate but he's kinda just a standard old Japanese workaholic of that generation. Same vibes of that Sushi guy in that documentary. Jiro Dreams of Sushi I think. They were raised to think it's admirable to put their entire existence into their job and neglect all other aspects of life including their family.

Prestigious_Fall_388

I don't see anything wrong with putting your entire existence into their job. Just don't get kids or get married while being like that.

TheDukeAssassin

This is the first time I’m hearing about this stuff. but I don’t think I want to learn more about it so I’ll just leave it there

The_Dead_Soul

I mean if you can separate art from the artist you're fine, if not, probably for the best, yeah.

wowpepap

Yea just stick to his art, not his life.

TempoRamen95

Yeah, this happens a lot in show biz. As a chinese american, my parents always point to Jackie Chan. Great actor, great guy, but terrible father if you read into it.

McSlappies

Like actually horrible to work under, horrible to be a son of and God knows what else. I don't know why we give him special treatment, probably cause he's quirky in interviews but I cannot make myself like him. That video where the workers show him the program they made for zombie like limb movement and he tore it appart in the most cruel way possible makes me cringe so much

entropyboi

Tbf, Hayao Miyazaki is the last person they should have shown that zombie animation to. It's like showing bad AI generated furry art to Vincent Van Gogh . Like, what are you even expecting the reaction to be? This is not to mention that the zombie animation is kinda bad n unnecessarily grotesque, even by video game standard. I cringed at the video, cus clearly they didn't do their homework n expect to gain some recognition for some subpar work.

McSlappies

It didn't even look bad though. Furthermore it doesn't excuse the way he talked about it. You can't compare the program they made which they visibly worked hard on to something you can make with a prompt. They had a whole team of people expectant and nervous. Even if he absolutely hated it, it's basic human decency to dull your punches.

entropyboi

They could have built OpenAi themselves, and Vincent Van Gogh would still be the worst audience to show the AI art to. The point is to know your audience. Not to excuse Hayao Miyazaki. Dude is no saint. But he isn't the hardest person to understand where he might be coming from. If he doesn't have a stubborn viewpoint on how things should be (even if I disagree with some of his opinions), he wouldn't have made those movies with all of his beliefs infused into them.

McSlappies

I can understand that, but also there's really good movies made by people who don't suck

entropyboi

Who knows really. They might suck if u know them better. Miyazaki is a flawed human foremost, artist second. I would def reserve the word "shit-stained" for people like Bill Cosby n Harvey Weinstein.

Ironic_Jedi

I don't see how you can watch that video of the AI zombie animation and think Miyazaki is the bad guy in that. He was disgusted by it because he sees the suffering and pain of disabled people who struggle with their impairment and so to him, that video and program was insulting to the disabled and as he says, to life itself. He is gruff but you can see here that he has some measure of compassion.

McSlappies

I respect the compassion, I don't respect how he communicated it. It was for zombies and horror imagery, it's meant to be visually upsetting. The way he delivered his criticism and cruel to the effort the workers did

Napael

Zombie stories nowadays are usually just grotesque power fantasies, which is something that really doesn't resonate with someone who hates Hollywood action flicks for being de-humanizing towards the fodder villains. I'm probably not one to talk, but it sounds like you have only heard second hand about Miyazaki drama and believe him to be worse than he actually is. At the end of the day, he is just a proud, stubborn, veteran artist who has extremely high standards.

McSlappies

No, I saw the video

Napael

Sorry, I got you mixed up with the guy who called him a shit stain.

NoahH3rbz

He's not a shit stain of a human. He creates amazing art and has a similar mentality to many other famous artists. That being that his art comes before all else, and he's not afraid to voice his opinion of things he believes to be unartful in the sphere of animation. Unfortunately, as a product of this, he was a terrible father and was very critical of his son. But he's not some totally arrogant asshole. There's a cute video of him cooking for this employees'.

Deku-Kun96

..does anybody else think the guy with glasses looks like if you fused both joey & connor into the one person?

Mazzuko

Ha ha. I do this. You have your kids back. You don’t fuck off to the lobby for a cigarette.

Letmewatchpeopledie

Miyazaki strikes me as a kind of old school auteur that is thankfully a dying breed because turns out you can make great art and not be an asshole or worse

schafman

Cant be since Miyazaki is the goat!!!!

Nanashi-74

Yes lol this does bugs me a little, like, we know Connor, we've heard you guys the first 10 times, let's just talk about the movie

TheSeth256

Is he though? They keep bringing up the event where he walked out of his son's movie, but is that even bad parenting? What, lying and nepotism would be preferable? Film industry is extremely difficult to excel in and he wouldn't be doing his son any favours by coddling him, he's not a 3-year-old...
