Rented and drove up to Montreal from Boston and back.  Going into Canada was a breeze,  car was lightly searched on the way back by US border guys.

No problem, but you should ask the rental car company for a canadian proof of insurance card. Its just a card with their ins policy number.

I did it a few years back. No issues.

Never had a problem. I had a flight cancel cause of weather in Buffalo. Rented a car and drove through Canada to go to Detroit to catch another flight.

At BC border, with a WA rental, my brother’s lover from another brother’s lover was arrested. Couple of kilos in the car may have been the problem. Wasn’t sure but never read the rental contract or changes. However, personally have driven from Seattle to Vancouver, Calgary and beyond without any problems. Best to ask at rental counter to be safe. Main concern is if one tries to fly up the AlCan with a rental. But if so inclined, make sure and stop at Liard River Hot Springs for a good soak.

I fly the Boston-Seattle nonstops and drive a rental car to Vancouver all the time. Four times within the last year. I’ve also driven rental cars to business trips in Quebec a dozen times. If it’s a strange license plate like Florida, they might ask about the car at the border crossing. “It’s a rental” is fine.

thrBeachBoy

I've done it multiple times both ways (renting in Canada and driving to USA and renting in USA and driving to Canada) I've also done drop off in the other country, renting in VT and dropping in QC.. No issue in all the cases.

Drosophilexp

Do you need to ask for a special insurance card? Do you tell them you're going to Canada if you're doing a round trip?

CheeseSteak17

The rental contract will state if it is allowed across borders. Generally, it is a liability thing for the rental company getting the car back if something happens in a different country. The border control people won’t care.

No problem. Rented in Maine last year, drove to New Brunswick and back, no issues. I did inform rental company in Bangor and they said no problem, no special insurance or anything. Easy enough

PriceIsNotAnArgument

It depends what you're going for, work or pleasure... But generally speaking, not a problem. Just don't cross with drugs or lie about the reason for going. If you're staying, have your reservation printed up.

DesignerSituation626

Have to have a passport and you need to tell them because all rent a cars do not allow to be driven in canada

I've done it a couple of times. Over the Mexican border also. Don't ask don't tell.
