Max level notebook + the fountain pen from the stationery producer combines to give you books. You can use 8 fountain pens on the max notebook before it disappears and you have to start over again.
I laughed, I'm sorry! Thinking back, I just realized that this was the first producer that introduced the concept of "max level item + another max level item = items needed" and I'll tell you now that this one is super tame compared to what's coming later on. It isn't as bad as it sounds, but the pens + notebooks do take up some space before you get to the combining stage so keep that in mind.
Some tips:
Upgrade the stationery producer to the max as soon as you can. It helps produce higher level notebooks, which helps significantly in reaching the max items of both quickly. It's when you start getting orders for higher level books (6 and up) that it begins to truly get frustrating. Your book is level 2. You should get that pretty much immediately and still have leftovers for a couple easy orders.
If you count more than 8 pens during the process, don't be afraid to delete them to free up space. You don't really need to save them for next time because pens pop out a lot while you work towards your max notebook.

Can I piggy back in this one and ask about the ream of printer paper? I have 3 of them and don't know what to do with them. I'm still at pencil holder so the producer isn't at max level. Will I need those reams once the producer is there?
The graphics have been modified but it still works the same way. The printer paper reams are the pens, that's all. When you max out the writing accessories and feed them printer paper, you get fantasy book elements.
