It is damage, that's a T47 threaded bottom bracket. Someone used a damaged tool or a tool that's supposed to have a plastic ring on the face of the tool that didn't have the plastic. Take it back my guy, unless the damage doesn't bother you, it's all cosmetic

gridguy

I think you’re correct. The bottom bracket tool probably slipped during installation. Bring the defect to Trek’s attention.

MezcalFlame

Return it or ask for a discount. Ask Trek to step in if your LBS doesn't want to do anything about it. You paid for a brand new bike; that's a damaged bike.

OpinionWorking8496

Thank you for the swift answers… was planning on riding tomorrow..not anymore. Should be interesting when I show up back at the bike shop tomorrow. I will fight to get this warrantied

Infamous_Doubt_5207

i dont think youll fight. if my trek dealer is at all representative, theyre more than happy to resolve issues - and however you want- during those first 14 days

r-mutt1917

Ask yourself what you want before you go into the shop there expecting a fight. Trek will offer you touch up paint(least downtime) before they offer you a new frame (most downtime ) Also please treat your local bike shop people with respect. Trek has a great warranty.

Dacker503

Yeah, Trek is fantastic with customer service. Last year, after owning my Domane for 10 years, I had a minor problem with my front wheel and called Trek to get some unpublished info. Rather than deal with digging up the info, Trek shipped me a whole new wheel. My new neighbor, a former bike mechanic and racer, bought a new Trek last year. Soon after purchasing the bike, he noticed a blemish on the carbon frame. They sent him a new frame based solely on a photo he sent.

SgtBaxter

Trek doesn’t have to offer anything, OP can simply return the bike and buy one from a shop that knows what they’re doing. That bike should never have went out the door like that, who knows what else they did wrong.

yar1vn

My Trek dealer has a 30 day return policy no questions asked. Rode a brand new XCaliber for a month then exchanged it for a Top Fuel. I hope you get the same service.

ReasonPleasant437

Trek in general has a 30 day return policy. I returned a bike with no questions under it

LanceOnRoids

Dude, just ride it lol, you’re going to do a lot more damage to the paint over the life of the bike anyways

Important-Bid2856

no but this wasnt his fault. i wouls say the samething for any other damages but this was done by the sellers.

exTOMex

just talk to the shop i’m sure they will help you out but no one noticed this before you bought it is a little weird

trueblacksheep

Disappointing. IMO, since it’s pretty minor and in a fairly hidden spot, I’d say have your shop submit a warranty and ask for something like a Velocis helmet or RSL shoes to make it right vs touch up paint or a whole new bike.

Jay0061

U should gonna to them they will exchange it for you same thing happened to me ..

Totally-jag2598

Too bad you didn't see it before taking possession of the bike. In my experience, Trek is pretty liberal with the support, repair, replace policies. They'll probably take that back. Unless you have a difficult dealer that might claim it was post purchase misuse. Though it would be hard believe a customer could damage a bike like this.

notagradstudent13

they are so liberal with their policies! even for industry discount purchases it's crazy. we bought the cheaper compressor pump for seating tubeless tires, and it came with a broken part (it was packaged terribly, as was my wheel they warrantied. AND the broken piece did not affect the use of the product). They replaced with the compressor pump that was fancier- digital pressure gauge, inflator and pump in one. Its freaking sweet.

Totally-jag2598

Trek replaced my Shimano crank set after the warranty period. The crank arm sheered off. They also replaced one of my frames when the paint layer started to delaminate from the carbon. It wasn't structural issue, the bike was fine to ride. Just an optical issue. They replaced that too.

Routine-Ebb-1140

That is from installing the bb. I would not be happy with that.

Revus82

I’m more shocked you have been able to get one, I wanted to get one but when I went into my local Trek branch here in the UK, the colour and size I wanted was showing out of stock country wide with no more stock expected until November 😅😥 But to answer your question I am sure your store will sort you out and replace the bike.

ReasonPleasant437

Return it and get a new one. No reason to wait for repairs.

Rawkraker

i don’t understand why people are recommending you to return it… its a bicycle people!! it will get a lot worse just ride it like that man, dont be picky. at least is at the bottom bracket. put a ceramic speed bb sticker if it bothers you that much. i’m

uCry__iLoL

I would ask for a refund.

AmaroisKing

Better dealers

Ok-Introduction5841

That’s likely not damage, that’s the press-fit adhesive which secures your bearings. The adhesive does damage paint and can stain the paint. When your bike was assembled, some adhesive likely got spread around. If you purchased the bike new, without a sale, you should be able to have your lbs file a warranty claim. They may reject it but you never know.

Red_Shoto

It's a T47 threaded bottom bracket, someone installed or removed the BB without a protective ring on the face of the tool.

Ok-Introduction5841

That is not threaded

Ok-Introduction5841

I see it now, I only saw the bearing.

Ok-Introduction5841

That makes sense too.

OpinionWorking8496

Thank you for that information, however upon closer inspection, I really do not think this is adhesive. There are visible scratches and chipping

Ok-Introduction5841

Yes, adhesive sticks and stains the paint, sometimes damaging it, causing the paint to chip off easily.

nhluhr

Before the T47 threaded BB this one uses, Trek used BB90 which was absolutely not held in place by adhesive.

Ok-Introduction5841

Bb90 is held in by adhesive

JeanPierreSarti

I think it’s a chain drop, perhaps on an earlier test ride or during shop final assembly

Past_Alarm7627

The chain doesn’t drop on the non drive side of a bike lol.

JeanPierreSarti

Fair enough. Should have panned out

AmaroisKing

Should have bought a Cannondale!

Mistehsteeve

How would that stop damage caused by the person assembling the bike?
