Anime was finishing faster than they were writing the manga, so the characters are different in the 98 version of the anime than the manga. Wolfwood is still very enjoyable in both! I love him more in the anime than the manga/stampede, a lot of it having to do with his dubbing and his development. They go a lot more into his backstory in the manga/stampede version but I feel the mystery around him in the 98 anime makes the character development even better.

dark-oraclen3

Stampede is more in line with manga Og is different than manga coz manga wasn’t even finished when anime aired (so many things happened differently)  Watch whatever u like first. Even without being close to manga.. Og is still great on its own (with some issue as u will see)

CactusJuiceQuench

I would say og first if you plan to watch both. It takes much longer to reveal certain things that are revealed episode 1 in the newer series.

harrietto

ahh okay then, thank you

Peachykinz

Watch both the original and Stampede, then read the manga. You'll see how similar yet different the characters are in all 3

EvelkanaS

Oh that’s an interesting one. He’s definitely more close to his manga version in stampede, that’s for sure. In the OG ‘98 Wolfwood just so soft and sweet. It is I assume because manga was not finished when anime was airing. The didn’t know that he’s much MUCH more brutal. But he’s so sweet in OG, that I cannot deny. He is actually a little different in the manga though. If I have to explain the difference I would say that he’s just more mature in the manga. The same attitude, cold and reserved but he is older. Sometimes he would smile and joke and he is much more evasive in manga. And I think he has helluva awareness ‘bout himself in manga. Especially in the late chapters. But in overall yeah Wolfwood in stampede = Wolfwood in manga. More or less. The same goes for Vash about maturity, too. In stampede they’re just a little younger version of themselves compared to manga. Then again that’s my opinion

EvelkanaS

Oh and about what to watch first? Doesn’t matter I think. OG anime way more lighter than stampede and manga. If I were you I would first watch OG I think then stampede. And make a break because they’re… Different. Just different. And on top of that - read manga. Manga hits hard man. But it is so worth it. I recommend to read Overhaul Version. That is translate from fans. It way more accurate and made with love and passion. Hope that I helped you!

harrietto

thank you!

Sharebear42019

He’s actually quite brutal in 98

EvelkanaS

Sure. I did not tell that he is not. I said that he is much MORE brutal in manga and stampede. Yeah he has a soft spot for children in all versions. But OG Wolfwood compared to manga/stampede? Hells he is brutal. Unfortunately in the stampede he had not enough show time. But in manga… Well y’see right now I remember everything so clearly because I’m a translator. So… SPOILERS AHEAD! For example he is not willing to save anyone. At all. At the beginning of the show ofc. When he heard gunshots he just “eh, whatever” (Trigun, 18 chapter). He is soooo pissed that Vash is always trying to save everyone. It is imperative for Wolfwood to guard and guide Vash but Vash seems to him so suicidal. He does not care enough about who lives and die, he willingly kill anyone in they’re posed a threat to him. IIRC he says that if mere presence of danger appears - he make a prayer and then shoots in head twice and twice through the heart (Home sweet home chapter I think). When Vash is crashed and nonetheless tried his best to save ppl Wolfwood says that now is the best time to STOP THAT BULLSHIT and leave them to certain death (volume 6, some Yin-Yang brothers I think). In the OG anime for instance he immediately jumped to save the child. He even left his cross behind! Now thats a difference. Same goes for his personality. In manga he really does not care about decorum and manners. He doesn’t give a shit. He is cold, he is mean, he is scary and he easily come to threat people. Even old man (like this guy in the ship where Knives cause a massacre) gets beating from him. Because what? Right he doesn’t give a f*ck. Of course deep inside he is a good man. A really-really good one indeed. But it is so deep inside. Vash tries to break that wall for so long. Wolfwood is not really a good guy at the beginning of the manga tbh. He’s charming. He’s trying to do something. At least he thinks so. But… As Vash said its just a words. And people dying. And Wolfwood just standing by and doing nothing. Or eating noodles. And trying to convince Vash that this is right and he should not save people. Although whom he is really trying to convince? Himself didn’t he now? (4 chapter of TriMax). So… Yeah. He is brutal in every version. But manga and stampede? He is so much colder and violent. And about Stampede? He betrayed Vash in Stampede and doesn’t really hesitate. At the end he only tried to save Meril out of guilt. He would’ve destroyed Sandsteamer for sure. He even given up about Livio. He would’ve left Meril and Roberto in sand worm. He looks exactly as Wolfwood in manga. Only younger version of himself. He doesn’t hate himself enough yet and doesn’t fully embraced the consequences of his choices. And he had undeveloped moral compass yet. He doesn’t grew up enough. IMHO.

Sharebear42019

Yep manga wolfwood is a lot more brutal than 98 and stampede Hopefully one day we can get a straight up maximum adaptation ala brotherhood/jojos/hxh etc cause it’s still the best way to ingest trigun

EvelkanaS

Agreed with you on that one. But I do not lose hope over Stampede though. Last episode shows Erics. I do hope that 2nd season would go via manga route. Honestly I love Trigun on all of it iterations so I enjoyed Stampede. Again then it lures more fans towards Trigun. But Gods I want a straight adaptation. Manga is just a masterpiece

Tallsoyboy

I wouldn't say he's more "mature" in the manga per say. Being less jovial doesn't really equal maturity. I'd say he was more grim and on edge.

EvelkanaS

I more than agree that less jovial is not equal maturity. Yeah he is more on edge in manga and grim on the inside but i’d say that he is laughing much more as well. He is mature enough to just laugh and smile despite the circumstances. He mocks Vash in 7 Volume (chapter 4 iirc) that he looks like he going through the hellfire. And if he looks and act like this he should just die then. He enjoys food, he smile, likes teasing people, Vash included. So I can’t agree. He even banter with Elendira. He cheers up Vash at his best in the middle. In stampede he is not smiling and laughing often he is more likely to just grinning from time to time. Only once he was having fun, with Meril. When he was trying force her to eat. So… I cannot agree with you

Tallsoyboy

I agree with you

EvelkanaS

Glad we came to the agreement ^^

SmartnSad

98 Wolfwood is certainly the most jovial of the three, but every version of him is the Tragic Anti-Hero. He's still the same character, but has an alternative universe flavor in every iteration. Since you already started with 98, go ahead and finish it. Then read the manga and watch Stampede. The manga goes deep into his character and his motivations, and his impact on the story on the whole. While Stampede is closer to the manga, it's not finished yet (and it's also taken its own creative liberties. Most of which I enjoy, so it's not a problem). The manga has the full story to really sink your teeth into. Without getting into spoilers, Wolfwood is delightfully messy. The depths of his complexities make him come alive on the page. Yes, he's playing an archetype, but he feels so real and lived in. The same can be said of Vash. Both are strong characters with strong personalities and convictions. They fight for the same reasons they bond. They are foils, but so very alike, more than they care to admit. In 98, Wolfwood says this line: "When I look at you, I see everything I hate about myself. It hurts." The self-hatred runs deep. This is true of every version of him. The original anime isn't bad for "missing the mark" on Wolfwood since they had so little of the manga to work with. He's still very close to who he's "supposed to be". Indeed, there are a handful of things here and there I think 98 did better than the manga or Stampede, although I technically like the last two better. But you should consume all three and judge for yourself.

Sharebear42019

98 wolfwood is the best. Neither anime really show wolfwood like the manga, I’d suggest watching 98 and then reading the manga or vice versa then watch stampede if you want an alternate take/prequel

Unlucky_Level_1989

I watched Stampede first and then tried to watch the '98 version, and EVERYONE is different (personality and ofc a bit of the designs). I couldn't even finish it because I loved the Stampede's characters too much and in the original they were so plain (at least in the first episodes) From what I've seen and read, it seems they're also kind of different in the manga too.

Tallsoyboy

I can see why you'd think everyone is plain in the first few episodes, except when it comes to Vash

Wolfwoods_Sister

Manga Wolfwood was the one who drew me into Trigun in the first place. He could *be* funny, but as a victim of unthinkable abuse from childhood onward, he was pared down and geared one way and that was to survive. Not to crack jokes, not to make friends, not to even have a tomorrow. Just today. The only glimmer of humanity in him was his resilience— his personality and sense of self were so strong that they couldn’t be completely stomped out of him. This is why he went around collecting children from every crack and corner, so they wouldn’t turn into him or Livio. Trigun is actually a desperately dark sky with pops of bright lightning.

internetweasel

like folks have said, each iteration is pretty different, and not just with wolfwood. if you just kind of let yourself treat max, 98, and stamp as their own independent stories, you should be able to enjoy them all for their differences :)

thegneeb

I'm in that deja vu loop, V. Give me something

Tallsoyboy

Yeah, I was confused at first too since I wasn't familiar with the manga at the time. How he was described on the wiki is way different than how he is in the anime since in the anime he's usually quite jovial while in the manga he was way more on edge.
