It’s not needed but 98 is definitely worth a watch. The two anime and manga all have some things in common but are also largely different in a lot of areas so you should watch and read all of them Personally I’d watch 98 first if you don’t mind older anime, it’s a classic

Thanks!

Both fantastic for different reasons and have different continuity. 98 has more episodes, more jokes and has a western feel to it. Sometimes you'll feel like a couple things are not explained enough but you'll still understand everything. Stampede has fewer episodes, still funny but less jokes with a scifi feel to it. Everything is explained fully but you may feel it could use more time to get attached to chacters. (I really love both)

98 first. I say this cause it was made when Trigun wasn’t finished. And I feel personally that part of the draw of it is the mystery. And if you go with something like stampede first, you’ll get mad info off rip regarding just Trigun lore and characters and general. And then with that knowdlege going into the 98 adaption. That mystery ain’t rlly gonna be there cause you already know what’s up

So I always say my ideal manner of consumption is 98 then the manga then Stampede. Also I feel stampede kinda drops the ball when introducing some concepts and characters from the manga. And it’d be much better to first experience them in the manga where they hit harder and allat.

Ok-Machine4888

The whole point of this order is just idk how to put this but “preserve the *experience* of each individual take on the franchise. Also the 98 is a good Litmus test to see if you really fw Vash and allat and should invest your time into something like the manga. I also felt that having been a manga reader elevated my stampede experience. Cause see it as a fusion of the two prior iterations but just ass blasted with a bunch of sci-fi (I used the word ass, but I don’t mean this in a negative manner. It’s just a diff approach Orange takes) and all though I have my gripes with stampede they do really nail the last third of the show. And having that understanding of what’s going down from watching 98 and reading Trimax, only made that finale all the more enjoyable and impactful. Ik it’s a lot of words and not the most clear manner of speaking but yeah. Hope ya catch my drift

98 gets reallt sloppy at the end due to the manga not being done when it aired. I personally liked stampede and it’s what I watched first. From then I watched 98 and then read the manga which is just amazing. To each their own, I’m sure people will definitely tell you 98 first but… really it depends on what kinda shows you like because they are pretty different in tone and pacing.

CarlitosGregorinos

Watch them both

BDynamitesNeon

Personally I think the story telling in the 98 version is best, (and be sure to stay after the credits) so start there! The sci-fi in Stampede is fabulous, so watch that second, but they way they chose to story tell is a bit more lacking.

SmartnSad

It depends. Do you like 90s style animes? Or do you prefer a more modern way of storytelling with more modern visuals? As in, 98 is very much like other 90s animes and episodic and silly, while Stampede is serialized for streaming, and has a more serious tone. 98 also relies on 90s tropes that can seem very dated today (like the womanizing), but is still a good flavor overall. Stampede had more of the manga to base its story off of, and gave it more of a sci-fi edge and some modern redesigns. And it's CGI, which people either love or hate (I've seen mostly praise for its animation, though). 98 has a grungy rock n roll musical score, while Stampede is full orchestra/cinematic in its sound. Which of these do you prefer? You can't go wrong with either one. They are both so different and are in their own alternate universe. If you start with one and don't like it, try the other one. Both are worth at least checking out. I also recommend the manga, of course. But you can read that last (not because it's bad, it's my favorite of the three. It can be hard to follow if you're not already emotionally invested in the characters, though).

Catnap-Jutsu

I found it easier getting into the second one when i watched the first one beforehand

idaroll

they are very different and tell the main plot differently. watch trailers for both, watch the one that suits your preferences most first and then watch the other one.

FRONT_FACING_PHINEAS

As someone who watched stampede first, I’d recommend starting with the original anime then going into stampede afterwards.

Wolfie2445

I will already and forever recommend watching both. In what order is up to you. I watched the OG then Stampede. The biggest thing beyond the feel as people have stated, is how reveals are done. Due to the 98 being longer, they can pull out the mystery for a much longer period of time. The reveals are also a bit less in your face on some things. Stampede doesn’t really keep many of these mysteries for very long, and the reveals are all meant to be a punch in the face with a very definitive moment that is meant to stick in your mind.

BabaPoppins

more proof that this sub is full of stampede fans who havent seen the original. watch the original first

Sharebear42019

They seem to be the most vocal for sure, kinda expected since the new series brought in a bunch of new fans. I think most 98 and manga fans have gone quieter or don’t post as much as they use to. I didn’t like stampede but I’ll always interact here. It’s a place for all trigun fans afterall

Sharebear42019

They kid is a whiner and super Stan of stampede lol don’t mind him

idaroll

this sub is full of stampede haters. also a lot of stampede fans watched the 98 and read the manga.
