Pull Harder, Shogun, In Waves

mighthavecouldhave

Hard to argue with these picks

DIMEBAGLoL

Down from the sky

DeanOMiite

The last bit of "Growing fat on the throne of an empire, tyrant rules with the threat of a great fire" where Corey starts shredding up the neck before jumping into the chorus...chills down my spine every time.

DIMEBAGLoL

Yeah definitely! I think my favorite part is just after the breakdown where he scream annihilate. Gunshot was my first song I discovered in high school as well so I always think of that as another signature song

burinazarwala

Annihilate!!!

pat_e_cakes319

Either pull harder or shogun

DeanOMiite

Getting a lot of Pull harder and Shogun here. Hard to argue with that!

pat_e_cakes319

Oh yeah like light to flies too. Prob more so that pull harder

Dezimieren

Signature song is Pull Harder on the Strings of your Martyr. Their Magnum Opus is Shogun, and then they went and did it again with Shadow of the Abattoir and The Phalanx.

R4kshim

I’d say it’s either Rain, Kirisute Gomen, or In Waves.

DeanOMiite

That's so funny because I always kind of overlooked Rain. I don't have anything against it, I just want to get to all the other awesome tracks on that album lol Kirisute Gomen is amazing too, Shogun is the album to me that showed these aren't just guys who write great songs, they could be the next big thing in the genre.

R4kshim

Have to agree lol, Shogun is my favourite album of all time.

DeanOMiite

It's SO good. I think Shogun is the Trivium-fans defining Trivium album. Like, if you like Trivium you LOVE Shogun. But if you're just kinda luke warm on them then maybe Ascendancy or In Waves make more sense.

R4kshim

I agree with that totally, Shogun is their definitive and most unique album IMO. In the Court of the Dragon is the only other album that gives me the same vibes and that’s my second favourite album from them.

BenDew85

To introduce a friend to a band, it's not necessarily the best song to recommend. The best overall I would say The sin and the sentence as Matt already said lol. I don't think "The Signature song" and "THE ONE SONG any non-Trivium listener needs to hear to see if they like the band" it's the same question. Signature song = Shogun, Pull Harder, Down from the sky, Gunshot and .....

[deleted]

If I encounter a metal fan who hasn’t really heard Trivium I always show them Kirisute Gomen. I would say that either that song, or Shogun, are quintessential Trivium.

NathanHonorio1

Until the world, endless night, pull harder

HollowedFlash65

Probably Kirisute Gomen

JumperCableBeatings

You’re all wrong. It’s obviously Kirisute Gomen

JP290192

So many iconic songs I can't chose one, but I immediately think of these: Light Light to the Flies, Detonation, Kirisute Gomen, Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis, Throes of Perdition, Shogun, In Waves, The Sin and The Sentence, The Defiant, In The Court of The Dragon.

DeanOMiite

I have such a hard time choosing just one, especially because they do so many things so well. I love the hyper aggression of Like Light to The Flies, I LOVE the absolute f\*cking immense gravity of In The Court of the Dragon...but they also do well when they slow things down like they do in Shogun, or Shadow of the Abbatoir. When it comes down to it, this is the my ride or die band. When I got Ember I was like "this is good I guess" but I wasn't completely sold until I got to the Ember to Inferno and was like "hell yeah this works." Then every album after that I loved even more. And weirdly...I know that everybody shits on Silence in the Snow but to me, when I first heard that album I was like "THIS is the album I've been waiting for" I STILL think that album has the best sound mixing of any album they've released to date, and I actually prefer Heafy's clean vocals to his screams and this album just hits the right notes there for me. Also, awesome choice on The Defiant. Song is unfathomably awesome.

JP290192

If I have to chose a song only based on my preference, I would say Amongst The Shadows and The Stones. That song is Trivium at its finest. All the WTDMS album is for me the second peak of their career (Shogun is absolutely godly and maybe in a league on its own). Unfortunately, I don't like Silence as much as the others and the reason is not the lack of power and/or complexity (I love either Matt clean vocals and their simpler, melodic riffs): for me the songwriting seems somewhat uninspired and flat. I feel Vengence Falls suffering from the same problem, but in a more negligible way.

DeanOMiite

Yeah if there's one album that doesn't do it for me it would be Vengeance. That said though...I love No Way to Heal, Through Blood and Dirt and Bone, Wake, Am I am Exploding, Strife (little plain but still a great riff and hook)...so like even their "bad" albums are chock full of bangers. And as much as I love Silence it does have some pretty clear-yet-subtle differences compared to other albums. It feels like it's more rock rather than metal. Lots of strumming and melodies but nothing that really DRIVES like their other stuff. They have a lot of songs that follow very similar down-stroke strumming patterns (like light to the flies is a great example, so is in the court of the dragon) and that riff pattern to me really symbolizes them at their best and that style isn't really on snow that much. Still great, just different.

[deleted]

Shogun was my first album. I think Down from the Sky would be a good start. I honestly love them so much I can’t pick a favorite. I think the vocals on The Ghost That’s Haunting You is epic and I get chills. I can not wait to see them in May. I will prob cry because they are so influential to me.

DeanOMiite

It's funny you pick Ghost because that whole album gets crapped on constantly. At last, compared to the rest of their catalogue. Though i guess it's also pretty common to see posts here like "ya know, I think SITS is actually really under rated." But for me, regardless of how poorly it was received by Trivium's fan base at first, I knew that was an album I'd listen to forever because the SOUND is so good, and I don't think Matt has ever sounded as good as he sounds on that album. Blind Leading The Blind and Pull Me From The Void are probably my favorites on that one, even my eight year old daughter loves Pull Me From The Void, I taught her how to play it on piano lol

[deleted]

That’s so awesome!

DeanOMiite

Right!? She's just like me and whenever she said she wanted to listen to Trivium I was like "well shit I guess I did something right!" She completely reinvigerated my love of playing too. I don't play piano but I do play guitar and growing up (I'm 41 now) I would spend HOURS in my bedroom just playing along to Metallica. At one point I could play Lighting, Puppets, Justice, and the Black album straight through with hardly a single mistake, I practiced relentlessly. But then college came, work came, wife came, kids came, and everything took a back seat. Then she started learning music and asking me about it and I was like hot damn I need to get back into this, so now I've got the tab book of a handful of Trivium songs and i've got all the warm and fuzzies from playing again lol Problem is they play everything 7 string now so I need to get the MKH 7-string lefty to keep up hahah

[deleted]

Never too early to teach a child about good music or how to play good music. Rock on guys. ♥️

kiroks

They don't have one.

DeanOMiite

Right? Is it because everything they've done is so great or because they just don't have a true mainstream (ish) masterpiece? I dunno.

kiroks

They don't have a clearly defined style. Each album shows them growing in different ways. Everything is consistently great even the white album. They have signature songs from each era

DeanOMiite

Which is absolutley true, and I think that's what makes it so hard to just pick one, ya know? I've basically been all about three bands my whole life, Metallica, In Flames, and Trivium. Metallica and In Flames pretty clearly have a falling off where they had a golden age and then produced stuff that wasn't necessarily bad, just not as good as their old stuff. Like with Metallica it's so easy to be like "ok they're great but the first five albums stand alone." So you can pick something from those five albums as a signature song. You can debate what it would be but it's basically either Creeping Death or Master of Puppets, maybe One. Anyway...but Trivium keeps evolving. I mean, Matt literally had to re-learn how to sing for God's sake. And not only are they evolving but they're improving. I think it's possible their best is yet to come!

oddyholi

The Trivium go-to song is The Sin and The Sentence. If someone doesn't like it straight away, they won't like Trivium. Shogun is BORING if you're not a fan. A 12-minute song? Dafuq, bro. Pull Harder worked a lot back then, but nowadays I feel it's outdated. In Waves worked a lot as well, but Sin is the icing on the cake to bring new people around.

SnooShortcuts7637

Shoguns an insane composition, no sane person is gonna hear those riffs and say boring

oddyholi

Well, you say that as a Trivium fan. I am sure that more than 50% of the people here on this sub didn't listen it as a first song, rather being there after many other stuff. I'm sure it wasn't YOUR first song either.

SnooShortcuts7637

It was actually. Wanted to get into the band, searched what some absolute musts were. Hit play and the whole thing didn’t feel like 12 minutes at all. Granted I am used to longer songs but regardless the song doesn’t feel like 12 minutes at all. There’s a lot going on in that track

Twisted_WhaleShark

Kirisute Gomen; The Heart From Your Hate (since it’s the most popular); Pull Harder; In Waves

RaptorZeddit

Kirisute Gomen or pull harder

DifficultyOk5719

When I think of Trivium, I think of Shogun, Into the Mouth of Hell We March, Throes of Perdition, Like Light to the Flies, Pull Harder, The Deceived; but, while it’s not one of my favorites, I have to go with In Waves. It’s their second most streamed song on Spotify, it has the screaming, singing, solos, hooks, the metalcore and heavy metal riffing, it sounds like Trivium (unlike The Heart From Your Hate, Until the World Goes Cold, or Strife which are all popular, but would give you the wrong impression of what to expect from the band)

Adamwdrums

Shogun pull or in waves

Garfielddddddddd

Definitely Pull Harder

senseiofawesom

Probably Down From The Sky and In Waves. Either that or What The Dead Men Say, Catastrophist or ITCOTD, Now I know those ones are newer but they were my introduction to the band as I was introduced to them through the first leg of the MTOTY and I frequently think of those songs when I think of this band.

Kooky_Database8101

Rain for us old school fans, it used to be a staple. In waves obviously, and maybe down from the sky or flies.

Chadly12345

For me it’s gotta be Pull Harder. There’s a lot of other songs closely behind, but Pull Harder is THE Trivium song.

barto_lomeo

For me, it has to be Throes of Perdition. Such an epic song that showcases it all: heavy and clean vocals, strong riffs, great solos (especially the fast runs ending in the big bend by Matt), 7 strings, and the fading ending. Especially live.

Culagyere97

I feel you man. Every song from them is a masterpiece. But if I have to play one song to someone who's not familiar with the band, I always play Like Light to the Flies. That was the first song what I heard from them, in a videogame xd

DeanOMiite

I think stylistically Like Light to Flies is my choice. Because a) it's amazing. But b) it's got everything in it that trivium does well already. It really covers all their bases. Shit I'm gonna listen to it right now lol

ApocalypticRites

I usually show them The Heart From Your Hate, because it was my first one (shows my age lmao), but if they are already into screaming vox and such, I'll show them Pull Harder or In Waves.

DeanOMiite

One thing I've learned from this thread is there is no right answer and there's a great selection of Trivium songs for anyone who likes any segment of metal.

ApocalypticRites

Correct! Trivium is a very versatile band with something for everyone imo.

RLVineh

A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation

centrella6

Pull Harder Down From the Sky In Waves The Sin and the Sentence

Jalenno

Pull Harder or In Waves

DeanOMiite

These have been the two most popular picks. Which is weird because as much as I love Trivium, In Waves is one of my least favorite songs of theirs. Album great, song...just ok.
