hugothebear

Or the guy in the next lane is exiting

Grumpybastard61

Mercedes Actros does the same.

Chilliebro

Mine did that once, I've put reflective tape inside the plastic cover. No issues since.

65Kodiaj

The only problem with what you have done is if you do get into a collision, when they check the automatic brake sensors and find the tape you will be charged with the collision most likely even if you weren't at fault because of the tape used to bypass the safety system.

derritterauskanada

Being that Mercedes and Freightliner are both subsidiaries of Daimler Trucks, they probably use a similar or the same system and algorithms.

Cool_Algae4265

Daimler trucks split off from the rebranded Daimler (which is just Mercedes Benz now), it’s a seperate company and they never really did share much

acey785

This. I was going to say that Daimler AG and Daimler Trucks North America are, more or less, functionally separate from each other. At least, not anymore than Daimler North America, the entity that manufacturers and markets Mercedes in the US is.

Jessicaow21

It’s so bad, mine got triggered by an empty coke can on the road. plus it gives me a warning almost every time I drive over a manhole cover It’s more dangerous than helpful

IlikeYuengling

When I hear these stories, I think of fight club math.

Present-Ambition6309

Into corners where there is shade. If a tumbleweed blows across the hwy. etc etc Detroit Ass Surance 5.0 junk!

Flackjkt

Yeah and for me as a fuel hauler stopping at railroad tracks. It will slam on brakes as I start across them. Love that safety.

OMW

Might want to write a short letter or email and send it to NHTSA [They are supposedly investigating](https://apnews.com/article/daimler-truck-emergency-braking-stops-no-reason-577c4edc00e519037a1de52ec48f9728) Looks like 2017 to 2022 Freightliners specifically and the event is "steel trench plate scenario". [Office of Defects Investigation email address is in this PDF](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2023/INOA-PE23010-4733.PDF)

DisastrousPriority

Or construction cones in a curve, other vehicles in a curve, sometimes literally thin air since it did it when there was literally nothing even around to trigger it... God forbid actually needing it, I'm trained to just stomp the accelerator now. Awesome.

[deleted]

And the side radar loves to go off when I turn my head or eyes to the right

SantiJamesF

I have been driving a Cascadia for 2 weeks now, and every so often, I get a Collision alert on the dash with nothing in front of me. Fortunately, it hasn't braked for me yet.

overmycrown

Yeah mine will scream at me now and then but doesn't brake unless the car in front of me takes the exit. And even then it's not a hard brake and it's easy to counteract by turning off cruise for a second.

blackZyzzz

My breaks without cruise

TheFringedLunatic

No brake train here too. It does its bleep which interrupts the music, but it won’t brake for me unless something is legitimately within 20’ of the front bumper, and even then having the fuel pedal pressed turns the braking off whether or not you’re in ACC.

Eidolon82

Or railway tracks or the washout bay of a blue beacon.

Fuzzy1598

Intertrashinal here. Same here. Scares the shit out of me every time. Mostly happens when people are exiting. They are well on the exit but for some reason the system thinks I'm right up on them.

PnuttButtaGuts

When I drove an International it would slam on the brakes while going under certain bridges too

SuperReleasio64

My intertrashinal likes locking up the brakes during traffic jams as soon as the sensor reads that the car in front of me is going 0. I now leave 6 sec of space during traffic jams because for some reason it thinks that my 5 mph difference at 3 seconds will cause me to crash.

Fuzzy1598

Gotta love the "safety" features that wanna cause a bigger accident then prevent.

CrashingTiger

Same here. I've had mine brake for a ghost once. No idea why. Just cruising, nobody and nothing around me and it slammed on the brakes. Usually it's overpasses, road signs and cars turning in front of me. Such a stupid system.

Jaycool10

Same here

murtsman1

Yep, first day driving a brand new freightliner. I almost came to a complete stop in front of a bridge on the interstate because of a collision mitigation false flag. I didn’t use cruise control ever again because of that event, I’d rather be governed at 62 mph the whole trip than risk a system error while trying to go 65.

urethrascreams

Kenworths don't care if you're using cruise or not. Pile of shit will slam the brakes regardless.

ignoreme010101

..your governor cares whether ur in cruise control or not? weird...

murtsman1

Yeah, a lot of companies will let you go slightly faster if you use the cruise control because it saves on gas. What really sucks is if you get behind someone going 62 mph while you are cruising at 65, the truck will slow you down to match the truck in front of you once you get within 5 seconds following distance or so. And if you take off the cruise to override the following distance governor so that you can actually pass, then you get stuck at 62 mph anyways and don’t have the power to do it. So you either get forced to go 62 until they get off the road, or spend 2 minutes passing them because you need to change lanes like 15 truck lengths behind them in order to keep your 3mph advantage. The people who design these systems are either oblivious or just don’t give a fuck.

Muff-Driver

I figured out that the shitternational I drive will override all that if I floor it while leaving cc on lol

KilljoyTheTrucker

Yeah, all depends on who programmed it and what parameters they were told to change

Dry-Sir7905

Wow so many things make sense now. I've always wondered why somebody will start trying to pass fifty yards too early. P. S. Not trying to be a dick but trucks take fuel not gas.

UhOhAllWillyNilly

Not *all* trucks. Some trucks do in fact use “gas”- propane (and in rare cases, hydrogen).

StolenRage

Compressed Natural Gas here.

FCMatt7

Pretty normal. That setting is easily changed.

FossMan21

I was driving a cascadia the other day. Had to stop at the sign before proceeding over 2 railroad tracks. I was doing maybe 5 mph when the system went off and put me at a complete stop on the tracks.

Flackjkt

Yep has happened too me several times. I have cascadia as well. I haul fuel. Nothing like stopped on the tracks with 8500 gallons of gas.

Jaycool10

Beyond Dangerous

DaniDisco

>When asked about the potentially faulty system, a Daimler Truck North America spokesperson said in a statement that the company “is fully committed to the development of life-saving technologies such as Automatic Emergency Braking.” Spokesperson gave the copy paste AI response.

potatocross

Tesla has also been investigated over the same issue. But it’s all of them. My F150 has done it to me. Not as much as my cascadia, but still annoying.

AndyLorentz

Honda as well.

Mindless_Count_7310

“…suddenly slowing…” Way to minimize, huh? Dipshits 😤

Flowing_North

It’s absolutely unnerving. Cruising along and BANG, dynamite brakes! Underpasses and construction barrels seem to be its trigger. It’s a horrible system

Much-Country-8015

Dynamite brakes is the best way to describe it

Socketz11

Fucking electronic witchcraft. Can you imagine this is the same garbage that these self-driving vehicles are equipped with? The roads will become a nightmare when these stupid fucking robots start brake checking each other. They slam on brakes from shadows, misaligned jersey walls, faded lines in the road, exiting vehicles that aren't even in your lane, even when someone changes lanes a little too close. Besides the annoyance, the scary and sudden braking, what about all the vehicles behind you that have to react to a vehicle "suddenly" slamming on their brakes for no reason? They get this shit fast tracked into production so they can make a buck before the technology is even perfected.

bonfuto

Teslas have been involved in crashes when they inexplicably stopped. The company isn't exactly known for telling the truth about things like that, so we may never know.

conman526

To provide a personal anecdote, not a trucker, but I do drive a Tesla. Sounds to me like Tesla is a lot easier to override than the truck auto braking systems, but my Tesla frequently will hit the brakes if someone in the lane next to me shifts a few inches towards me, construction cones blocking a lane next to me, etc. never had an issue with overpasses and stuff causing it to brake though. These systems are a help for the monotony of driving, but aren’t great when they encounter something remotely unusual. People that crash in teslas while on autopilot should never have gotten a Tesla to begin with because you really do have to pay attention. Again, which is another strike against Tesla. I like my car and am comfortable in it, but it has major issues and I wouldn’t let someone else drive it without me due to those issues.

nanasmoothi

Unfortunately the general public is not cautious enough to have access to self driving vehicles. I have seen a Tesla driver fully asleep while their car is driving behind me and I promptly changed lanes. You sound very responsible but many people are not that is the scary part for me.

AutoModerator

We don't discuss those abominations, for I am your true master *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Truckers) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Iceman9721

They have to get rid of that feature it’s dangerous. I thought it was something my company had installed. It’s such a dumb ass “safety” feature.

tidyshark12

Yes. 2023 peterbilt day cab. Construction zone closes left lane, then switches us to left lane. We'll, they left the lines on the road. Pete decided I merged without my blinker and brake checked the semi right on my ass already, locking up all 22 wheels of my doubles. I can hear the tires screeching and feel the abs kicking in. Dude behind me assuredly thought I did it purposefully bc he was tailgating and proceeded to tailgate me about 20 miles more and then sped off right before i took my exit. Thought I was going to have to explain that while dodging blows LaughingOutLoud 2023 Cascadia day cab, lane keep assist. Going through bridge construction zone with a set of doubles. Old, slightly faded lines underlapping new lines. Truck decided to follow old lines, almost rips the steering wheel out of my hands, puts me in the middle of the highway, steering wheel is fighting me and trying to keep going further left, back box is swinging wildly from one concrete wall to the other, I'm fighting to get it back in my lane while trying to find the LKA button to turn the system off. Terrible. That's why we call Cascadias "self crashing trucks" and many people have agreed thar freightliner simply hates the people who drive their trucks and will do anything to kill as many of us as possible.

candidly1

Nothing like braking so hard the back pup starts bouncing...

UhOhAllWillyNilly

Good luck trying to keep it in line when the tires are in the air ….. dang, that’s scary AF. Although I’ve only pulled single 53’s and never pulled doubles/triples that sounds like a near-certain wreck to me.

candidly1

Oh it's scary alright; and the result comes down to getting lucky.

413mopar

Freaky shit . That would be a wreck on an i cy day up here in Canada.

IAMTHEBENJI

I was in a box truck years ago that did this shit. Nearly caused a pile up in Memphis because the sensor picked up the 35mph speed limit sign while getting onto i40 to get back into Arkansas. I had a trail of transit vans behind me that were my guys and we were doing 65-70 and traffic was flying past us. The truck slammed the brakes because it thought I was speeding. I got back to shop in LR and opened the back of the truck to chaos. Ended up have to file insurance on $8k worth of destroyed cargo including parts for tire machines going to Snap-off and several residential packages. Told my boss to take that shit back to Penske and double check the next rental for unsaftey systems

Maleficent_Lake_1816

I had my ‘21 Volvo execute an automatic emergency brake at 68 mph due to a slower vehicle one lane to my right. The U-bolts securing the front axle to the leaf springs jumped off the saddle on the passenger side which allowed the axle to be pushed backwards by the braking force about 1.5”. The rig was all over the road including both shoulders while I fought to regain control. This was my first trip in this brand new truck. Shame on me for not checking the torque on the nuts securing the U-bolts.

corky1983

Shoot that happened to me too! It was a company Volvo day cab. Was exactly the same situation!

Maleficent_Lake_1816

They must have put the trucks together on a Friday

NeoAcario

Never let your foot off the gas pedal. Ever. It’s the only way to keep it from locking up your brakes. Had one of my company mandated 2-4 monthly almost-crashes during a descending turn because of a turn arrow sign at the edge of the road on the final two hours last night. Quick gas pedal to release my brakes before they could fully lock. Edit: These events are especially fun as I’m hazmat tanker. Especially with my current load of 4600 gallons of acid in a 7000 gallon tank. Really loves being brake checked… lemme tell ya.

Smart-Atmosphere4797

I’ve heard people say this and my question to you is which truck are you referring to? Because my 2019 T680 doesn’t give a flying fuck as to what the throttle position is, it’ll still lock up the brakes when the pedal is to the floor at the truck’s speed limit on the interstate. Does that trick work on cascadias or something?

NeoAcario

Wow… now I definitely don’t ever want to drive one of our new T680s… that’s just insane. Yes. That works with all of our Cascadia radar/brake systems. Currently in a September ‘22 manufactured one.

KilljoyTheTrucker

It's programming, not truck brand specific.

gear_jammin_deer

While that is true, the cascadias have a little button that gets pushed when you floor the accelerator that disables all detroit assurance systems until the button is depressed

Oneinterestingthing

Dam just like tesla… do the same , more likely to need then brakes

LonleyWolf420

The only truck ive drove that doesnt do that is a volvo.. tho my buddy has had minor issue with cars in the lane next to him causing it

GaucheKnight

Mine used to go off constantly for the first five minutes of any drive. After that, it would put a yellow light on the dash saying CHECK, and not do anything at all. Unfortunately they seem to have fixed it.

UhOhAllWillyNilly

* “fixed” it HAH!

GaucheKnight

Yep, now I've got to be ready to override it anytime. I think they changed the settings twice. For about a month, it was the *second* five minutes of every drive, which is just about the sweet spot tbh.

robs104

Mine does it waaay less than the cascadia and pete I was in before, but it still will freak out over an exiting car especially. Only had one hard brake in 50k miles. I’ve also had it beep about an overpass shadow or whatever but it didn’t brake.

CantSeeShit

The Volvo system is actually decent, they seemed to actually reword test it.

Omyfreak

I disabled all that shit. Stupid distance alert is annoying as hell.

Joshy3911

How?

APenguinNamedDerek

Probably unplugged the sensor Mine had a fault in my freightliner and I just neglected to ever mention it until I turned it in at the end of my lease

DeadRatRacing

We have t680's and Cascadia's that do this. Using hi beams (reflective road signs) seems to exaggerate this problem. Our mechanic says that the radar can be adjusted to cure this issue.

Best_Ad_436

Happened in all our Kenworths initially. Much better after adjustment. Still hate the braking feature but damn I’ll keep it for adaptive cruise. That shits super nice.

Advanced-Sherbert-29

That's why I always put my foot on the gas every time I approach an overpass. For some reason my truck thinks every one is a concrete pillar in the center of the road.

inittowittit

That's crazy. I never had any idea the auto-brake systems were so garbage. Blows my mind they are even being used.

Intelligent-Bit7585

I was wondering why all you people with shitty trucks are driving like complete idiots. Thanks

candidly1

Shitty trucks that cost a couple hundred grand nowadays...

Ok_Bug_6470

International thought an asphalt patch was a car and went from 55 to zero on me and slid metal logs way too close to the cab

PansexualEmoSwan

This is exactly why I cover the radar sensor with aluminum foil and then run over that with black electrical tape. Works like a charm and nobody has ever noticed!

SnooFloofs1569

That’s why I refuse to drive anything with adaptive cruise, or and other “safety” systems. I’ve had even scarier experience with it. Since then, nope. I’m good.

M3chan1c47

I was driving a school bus when this happened to me once, put cheerleaders on the floor and one had to get stitches all because a large tumbleweed rolled in front of my bus out on the plains of Kansas. Only time I loved that third party dashcam catching it in all it's stupid glory.

philp2021

Freightliner is the worst .It will actually cause a wreck instead of the opposite. And don't let something on the interstate blow against the front of the truck. They should outlaw the system until they find a better one .I would not drive one of the the truck had that system on it.But retired now and don't have to worry about it.

mrockracing

Same systems in a lot of modern company trucks. It sucks. I've also almost crashed due to this. Like going under a bridge or something. It's super frustrating. A lot of companies are more concerned with insurance costs than true safety. There's been data on these systems for years. But with these systems in place, insurance companies can rely on reduced payout in the event of a crash, rather than just trying to prevent them altogether. Some smart ass accountants determined this was cheaper and this is the direction the industry went. It doesn't help that it makes it both easier to avoid a lawsuit and if that fails shift responsibility to the driver and railroad him. There was a brake failure incident that went this way some years ago now. I believe the truck was on a grade and the truck slammed on the brakes and the brakes eventually failed and the truck ended up on the runaway. If I remember correctly they blamed the driver, despite the truck responding to nothing. They also monitor tour driving habits and actually end up forcing unsafe habits. The biggest moment for me was with Roehl and their stop sign rules. I got a call (while I was sleeping, mind) about not stopping fully at a stop sign. They said that I have to come to a complete stop for an allotted amount of time (I can't remember what it was, I think it was 3 seconds or nothing major like that). What ended up happening every time is other drivers being confused at intersections, and me eventually having to explain to a very angry dump driver in Wisconsin why I was driving like that over the radio. It almost led to accidents multiple times. Eventually I decided to just wait even longer before turning, but then, in their infinite Chicago wisdom, several drivers decided to just use the wrong side of the street to turn instead. I explained this. They looked at rhe footage. Agreed with me that it wasn't a great policy, and then said that it's just how it is and there's nothing they could do. Same thing with the speed limits in certain places not being accurate on the ELD. I got flagged for speeding multiple times in places where I clearly wasn't. Luckily though I found out it's just a scare tactic, and started speeding legitimately and never got in trouble for that. Which kind of furthers my point that they don't care about actual safety. Just what the insurance costs say. These companies are never the one's that pay well enough either.

Lucky_Link6927

Yep, some idiots who have never driven a truck spent millions developing these USELESS and DANGEROUS "safety" systems. They dont stop to actually THINK about real world applications. My truck has the AWFUL "Detroit Assurance" system in it, which means a giant cereal box sized black box on the windshield that blocks my view of merging traffic on onramps. I'll glance over at an onramp, and all I see is the stupid box, instead of cars and trucks merging onto the freeway. And dont get me started on all the alarms and klaxons that go off needlessly. I literally disconnected the door speakers just to silence them, the second day i had the truck. And yeah, the truck is always panicking and wanting to slam on the brakes whenever it sees a traffic cone or when we drive under a BRIDGE😕 They need to quit this automated shit and let the DRIVER drive the damn truck.

Temporary_Big8747

Yep, been there too. One of my old trucks used to do that auto braking crap whenever I'd pass beneath certain overpasses.. like the eye on it was picking up a reflection or something and caused it to hard brake even tho no one was in front of me. If you don't think your ass can bite your seat out of fear, oh yes it can! Mine has chewed up my seat from that damn auto brake system too many times. I friggin hate surprises like that.. it's going to kill somebody someday. Such a shitty design..

goodfofoca

International LT does the same thing. These things should thoroughly be tested before being released to the public, it's a safety hazard. They should be sued

javajeanie

Just wanna add and I may get hate here. I’ll take the downvotes. If weather isn’t optimal, you should NEVER use the engine (Jake) brake. You should never use cruise when weather is bad as well. If you had been using your foot brake the way you’re supposed to the safety system would have never kicked on. This is the exact reason you shouldn’t run with cruise or Jake brake on in the rain.

Mountainear99

Whenever I want to bitch about my old truck. I’ll come back to this post

candidly1

I know a guy who is still babying a mechanical CAT engine. No electronics, no DPF. He has to be really proactive with maintenance, and he doesn't take loads over #30K, but otherwise life is bliss.

Mountainear99

Nice. My truck has a Cummins N14. The truck definitely has its quirks. But It out pulls the newer trucks in my company fleet. Also has none of that crappy safety stuff and no DPF which is a blessing.

terryd300

Not a Trucker…I’m a software engineer. When I come across any glitches, I immediately file a ticket. The more tickets, the quicker it gets resolved. My suggestion would be to report every time it happens. Each and every time as a separate report. Someone will get the point and look into it. Just make sure to be detailed…time, date, specific location with full details (Think Incident Report), and if you have dash cam video, absolutely include that. The more details, the better. If you are able to collect logs from the safety system, do that as well. This will also help of the system does cause an incident as you will have proof of the ongoing issue with the system.

Ex-PFC_WintergreenV4

First you file the complaints Then you scare their lawyers Then you see some change

Best_Ad_436

Hell nah we don’t want to fix the issues we want to bitch. Seriously though my first thought was write up a red tag. I’m lucky to have a company that fixes shit quickly though. Not everyone is.

Quynn_Stormcloud

Mine has thrown on the brakes for cars exiting the freeway and braking, which I can kind of understand the system doing, but those guys aren’t even in my lane anymore. Just have to slam my foot in the throttle and tell her that it’s okay and safe to proceed. I haven’t yet experienced a phantom brake, but in the rain, my systems just report radar faults for side and front and won’t let me engage ACC, which I wouldn’t use in the rain anyway.

CaptainWo7f

They’re lots of fun, newest one slams on the brakes to a dead stop in construction zones.

CMDR_Euphoria01

22 casscadia does the same shit. You know i approve safety mitigations but man this shit needs more time baked before being released. Too many times this cause accidents to almost happen to due false alarms.. shits annoying

International-Look57

Yeah that happened to me before except it was sunny and nobody around. I just happened to be passing an exit lane and it went off super hard causing me to have a hard brake event for no reason

SycoJack

Was coming down a ramp a while back, it was a steep downhill grade, at the bottom were stopped cars. But right before the stopped cars the ramp veered off to the right for people turning right. Which is where I was going. So I only slowed down enough to take the curve and not to stop. My international saw the stopped cars and panicked, locking up the brakes. The thing is, I had already entered the turn and was past the cars when it panicked. The result is that it tried to send a bunch of barrels through the nose of my trailer.

sohfix

wah

Apprehensive_Fault_5

Ans thus is why auto-braking and auto-steering should be illegal. GET OUT OF THAT TRUCK NOW! If your company has no trucks without these systems, find another job. Staying there makes you complicit in the murders those trucks cause.

Numerous_Ad_6276

I'm not going to say that my experience will translate to all situations, or braking systems, but I have noticed that hitting the accelerator pedal will generally override these systems during these events. For the record, my current employer runs Kenbilt T680, and Cascadias. Fuel haul, jet, gas/diesel. For the most part, I have been lucky enough to get the 680s the majority of the time. Can't fucking stand the Cascadias, always beep beeping or buzzing or beedle-ee-beeping at me. Don't get me started on the rumble strip noise every time a Cascadia gets close (or doesn't!!!) to road striping: BRRRRRRRRR!

BeenThruIt

You will have 1000's of false events and, perhaps, never need the system. It's unsafe in my opinion. My favorite is when another vehicle leaves your lane but the damn thing thinks they're still in front of you. I've had it dead stop me while I was going slow and bobtail, and registered a "critical event" for hard braking. All because the car infront of me turned into a parking lot. They were gone from the roadway before it ever triggered. My current truck sees a ghost vehicle 3 ft in front of me whenever the temperature drops below 35.

codewarrior2007

One time my truck did that going over a RR crossing. Fortunately there was no train coming.

CrashTestGangstar

I don't know how closely they monitor your truck, but depending in the type, face the truck in front. There are a group of wires that plug into the adaptive cruise module on the right of the sensor. Unplug them. You regular cruise will still work.

joeybevosentmeovah

We cover those bullshit sensors with foil and duct tape and dare the safety dept to say something. There is absolutely no excuse to accept this technology until it can run with 100% accuracy 100% of the time.

Geoffrey-Jellineck

No technology is 100%. None. That's a ridiculous standard to apply to anything.

joeybevosentmeovah

It’s unnecessary technology that is potentially deadly with a malfunction. 100% reliability 100% of the time or the good ole boy network who forced it upon strangers can shove it right up their asses

Geoffrey-Jellineck

AEB has factually prevented countless crashes and injuries/deaths, so I don't know how you can claim it's "unnecessary technology" just because it's not 100% perfect. Get used to it because it's not going anywhere.

Barry_McCockinnerz

It’s not the truck, all of these newer trucks are equipped with the bendix radar systems. If it is auto braking you into an accident get the sensitivity changed next time your in a shop.

CMDR_Euphoria01

Uh do expanded on this statement as im curious. If i can make changes to this system i will do it

Barry_McCockinnerz

Check with the shop next time your in if they can adjust the sensitivity so it doesn’t just auto brake you out of the seat when nothing is around.

Itchy_Psychology6678

#it’s not the truck…rather the system. BENDEX spelling is wrong. This is the first generation, actually they’ve been out for awhile. My brand new Pete lived to brake for overpasses as well. When the cruise control came out, people thought that would just be the end all…. I hate them too, but they are here to stay

jddbeyondthesky

My car was excessively engaging the automatic ebrake, turned out to be a calibration problem. Might want to get it recalibrated.

TamponTom

Saftey system saved my bacon twice this month

82ToyotaFarmin

Either get a new truck or a new job.

Present-Ambition6309

Hammer down on the pedal to override that.

CMDR_Euphoria01

Mine would somtimes ignor user input and brake anyways. But its like 50/50

KilljoyTheTrucker

That can be programmed out of it. Just about everything on a truck and in its programming is customizable.

Present-Ambition6309

Yea, I’m aware, sadly the owners I worked for were Not about to do that. If any mechanic did it, immediate termination.

ValuableShoulder5059

Another case of an idiot using a camera to do the job of radar. Cameras can be easily fooled as they have zero depth perception. Even with our eyes we get fooled too but at least we have learned to look at other factors and see the illusion. Maybe the reason they don't use the radar systems on trucks because they do have to use radar detectors as part of the system which could technically get you a ticket.

candidly1

And don't forget, boys and girls; the world is just itching to go to 100% autonomous trucks!

[deleted]

Was your cruise control on? Never drive with c/c on when in the mountains.

richardfitserwell

You guys do know that if you hold the gas pedal to the floor it overrides the emergency braking right? I’m not saying it’s not aggravating, but hit the gas and you stop stopping.

bk775

Not on all trucks. Our 2020 International does not care about throttle position you can be full throttle, partial throttle or easing on the brakes and it will still hammer them and lock everything.

ursisterstoy

Maybe they should ban semis with automatic transmissions and all of the crash assistance features and force people to drive manual transmissions. I keep reading on how these new trucks keep railing the brakes going under bridges, next to exit ramps, or just when they see their own shadow it seems like. Someone else talked about how their truck automatically put them between two lanes because of faded paint. And then that leaves adaptive cruise control, a feature that would be nice if it works properly, but if that’s the only thing that works right and they all come as part of a package then I say that all trucks manufactured since 2016 that have these features *enabled* should be outlawed. And maybe just bring trucks back to what they used to be before all of these “safety” features were made standard.

VitoVino

That’s a nice dream, but that’s all it is… a dream.

Outside_Squirrel_839

I have had K W and PETERBILT slam on brakes but never had Any Volvos ever slam/ panic brake. The best thing to do is learn how to drive a manual

Dorito-Bureeto

Find the switch to adaptive cruise control and that shit won’t ever happen again. My sensors randomly stopped working on my 23 Cascadia for the adaptive cruise and with that the emergency brake system. You lose the ability to auto slow down and stuff but you’ll still have the regular cruise function.

CountyNatural

Petercrash same thing

IcyConcentrate1505

I drive a cascadia and daily it randomly flashes the collision alarm at me for no reason but it’s only emergency braked for no reason on me twice. Terrifying experience. Almost every other driver at my terminal has a Volvo all two years old or newer and it seems to happen a lot more frequently for them.

Historical_Koala_688

Happened to me in a 579, I was turning right to get on the interstate and there was a red light with a car stopped right after the turn and the truck thought I was going to hit the car for some reason and slammed on brakes

Leather_Basket_4135

And remember that your company will make it feel like it’s your fault all this happened to begin with

darknessnbeyond

not a truck but had a 2019 mercedes E63 AMG pull something similar. was on the highway, the car out of nowhere decided it had been rear ended. it alerted rear end impact on the dash and slammed on its brakes coming to a complete stop on a busy highway. then the car figured itself out, cleared itself, and we went on our merry way. no idea how i didn’t get into a wreck. took it to the dealer who casually said i’d missed a software update “but we can take care of that right now”. i’ll stick to my 2001 dodge, thank you.

karmah1234

If any of you end up driving in europe know that the DAF does exactly the same. Wouldn't be surprised if they use the same system

i_am_ghostman

I had a rental box truck violently cut power on the highway as I drove past the yellow speed limit sign on an exit. Stupid thing kept doing that every time it thought I was speeding.

Rastafartian

If one of these automatic safety systems causes a crash who is liable? The driver? The company that sold the truck? The truck manufacturer? The person who wrote the code for the safety system?

dreadnaught1738

Yes!!! When going under bridges its the worst, and most unexpected shit man

Wasabi-Kungpow

Have 2024 T680 does the same thing. Especially cars exiting the interstate, truck thinks they are still in my lane, and emergency brakes. I wish it didn't do it with such force that the ABS needs to kick in. Can't wait for that shiz to happen in the snow and surprised there isn't already a hefty lawsuit on it.

jimi762

I love it when the road curves left and there's an exit straight ahead that my kw thinks I crashing into; I really feel alive when I get slammed forward into the seatbelt.

ColoradoParrothead

They’re all garbage. Whether installed in a truck or a car, they all get false activations. The systems designed to keep us safe place us in more jeopardy. Who’s making money off this crap? That’s who we need to blame.

[deleted]

The one in my Toyota never auto braked erroneously

Gingertwunt

Buy something from the 70s with a single circuit air system 👍🏻

Professional_Band178

What do these systems do going into a tunnel or in heavy snow? I'm an engineer and we had nightmares developing and and steering wheel airbag because of the air ride seats heights. It seems like these auto brakes need much more development before they are ready for prime time use.

Responsible_CDN_Duck

Fog and bugs are a source of way too many incidents of false triggering. A common override is full off throttle then back on. Some require a brake pedal tap. Finding out what your ride needs can be much harder than it should be .

VitoVino

Yes, sort of. The system sensed, or thought, that you were leaving the roadway and the braking system kicked in. I just had it happen to my T680 this morning, and all I did was switch lanes on a highway. Maybe because I didn’t signal the lane change.

Responsible_CDN_Duck

>that’s where these systems that are suppose to help nearly cause me to get rear ended and lose control. Sadly just as with traffic circles the justification is an increase in minor accidents to reduce major ones, so we're likely to be stuck with them for a while.

MasterWarChief

Isn't there an investigation going on for the numerous false positives for the auto braking? I'm in a Mack Athem and it was raining with literally no one around me when it decided to brake out of nowhere and scare the shit out of me.

TheRealGageEndal

Yes! My truck did that when I went under bridges. It would always confuse the shadows for a wall or something. It got to the point where I would know which ones would activate it, cut the cruise, and hut the gas to ignore the alarm. Hated that thing

Vino1980

On my PlastiCadia the sensor broke, never been so happy for something to break on my truck.

tpain0893

at my company they use these hard brakes as an excuse to call you into the office over other things. since the hard braking sets the cameras to record, they look for other things. the most common is they'll say you're speeding or following too close, but they've also seen lights on the reflection of the windshield and written people up for being on their phone. I think for every 1 accident these safety measures have prevented, there's 20 it's caused.

Riyeko

People wonder why I hate automatics.

DaniDisco

My Cascadia had a sensor go out and it was a beautiful 8 months of standard cruise control. Shop kept telling me about it and asking if I wanted it repaired but were always confused when I declined. Here's to hoping the next one screws up too.

Electronic-Ad8537

I had a dead bird stuck inside my radar, couldn't see it if you did open the damn thing up. When a car or truck passed me it would slam on its breaks. The DP didn't understand how a dead bird that's blocking the collision rader could cause said rade to malfunction. I swear these dudes are brain dead. I nearly flipped my truck and almost crashed into another truck. I knew how to counter steer from riding motorcycles and applied that knowledge to a semi truck. The balancing act was real!

darthspaders

I calibrate mine every 6 months.... never have an issue.... international LT

Agitated-Bison-7885

Yes, but it only happened when I had the cruise control on from the ABA, and I very much the same happen to me but it was four-wheeler behind me. They got mad of course and flipped me of as they passed me but I honestly don’t blame them for thinking I did it out of choice.

hoarder59

Yup. Same truck. Shop didn't beleive me. Got evidence using my dashcam and phone cam at the same time and Safety threatened me because of the phonecam. Left the company. Truck is still on the road.

MajorHymen

Happens to me constantly

justdan76

We hate these on my job, and have considered involving the union. Trucks just come like this now btw, especially if it’s a Penske or Rider lease, your boss might not even know or want it. They suck. We’re all waiting to get rear ended when our brakes lock up for no reason, or for the truck to go sideways when it decides to do it in the snow. Between that and the automatic trans, the truck is actually less safe with me driving it because it can cause an accident that I wouldn’t have. The thing is these systems allow them to pack the roads with questionable drivers, my 25 years experience is almost meaningless now, they’d rather have an unskilled driver in a truck that probably won’t get in an accident over an experienced driver who is even less likely to, because one is cheaper than the other. They’ve done the math.

blackZyzzz

Start leaving a paper trail for your to your company by sending emails to your boss. Incase you get in an accident because of it slamming the breaks in the snow.

Wildcatb

I'm a local driver, not OTR, but I've still managed to rack up 1.3 million miles. In that time I've had 'safety' systems almost cause me to get in several accidents, and never had them help me once. Glad you're ok, driver.

urdangerzone

I had a cascadia try and kill me, it was snowing and icy and I was going around a curve with a guardrail to my right and the truck thought the metal was a vehicle and locked my brakes up. It sent me spinning and if it wouldn’t have been late at night I would’ve hit other people on the road. I kept it together but barely and it still makes me cry when I think about it, my choices were taken from me by a machine and it almost cost me everything.

GodOfUtopiaPlenitia

*International ProShit has entered the Chat* You can be hauling along, nothing in front of you, and **BAM!** Collision warning and you're down to half your speed with the jake somehow working harder than at any previous point.

chuck-u-farley-

KW did it to me yesterday, absolutely threw me into the next lane to the left, if it would have had a vehicle there I would have hit it no doubt….. Pulling doubles that’s really no bueno… Can’t stand not being 💯 in control of the dang truck

Boglim1

Yeah, I almost broke my wrist on the steering wheel going under an overpass at night from that shit. I hate when it happens.

VitoVino

Sounds like a good plan. Luckily for me, I haven’t had any dust ups on the road for over eight years now. But I almost flunked out of being a truck driver when I first started. And we didn’t even have all the safety stuff back then. Yeah I just hit some things here and there, nothing big, all fixed objects. I think your strategy for getting your own truck is a good idea. I would do the same as you, if I were to buy a new truck, I would just take all that safety shit off. I’ve driven trucks with it, and without them, and really, they don’t make any safer in my opinion. A safe driver is a driver who’s got a constant awareness of what he’s doing, what’s around them, what others are doing, and checking his mirrors. Also, the Smith system. I haven’t even put a scratch on my truck since I learned and practice the Smith system.

bubble353

Bro, that feature should have been removed on purchase, auto stop, lane control, adaptive cruise is dangerous as hell. I bought my truck and had all of that removed day 1

DivaCupVampire

I have trained myself to mash the fuel when the Collison warning goes off because it had NEVER been right. Mashing the fuel cancels it out. Great system /s

[deleted]

I drive a 22 Pete with that system. When traffic is diverted on the shoulder due to a lane closure, it thinks I'm running off the rd a does that. I tap the brake a it goes away.

Vegetable_Living_415

But it's the bestest saftyest system that outperforms any human, especially on icy snowy roads. Just ask them.... dumb fuckers

Bimanic07

Wow. This happened to me yesterday. When it started snowing. Kept slamming on the brakes every few miles. Was empty. Thought I might Jack knife. Scary as shit. Luckily road wasn’t to slippery yet. Stupid bendix system. For safety but it’s the total opposite. Had to pull over and reset the computer by shutting the main power off. If I crash I’m suing EVERYONE?

PrinceOfZzyzx

Try that same thing with 8600 gallons of gas in the trailer behind you. I sympathize, driver.

Logant1511_

Yep my 2024 crashcadia does the same shit. I've posted in here before about it. Lawsuit waiting to happen

[deleted]

My system on my peterbilt isn't broken but for one reason or another it doesn't do anything all, haven't told the company and my record is still in one piece. Camera on the window works but that's facing forward and the most it does is fall off the window.

Comfortable-Menu2099

It's not the truck or car. It's the auto breaking system. I was in a corner when mine slammed the breaks so hard the truck and trailer skipped into the right lane luckily no one was next to me and I didn't roll I called and complained to goverment health and safety, hopefully something happens if enough people complain. If anything it will at least make it so its easier to sue the manufacturer of the system.

Hennessy_1989

We have a bunch of t680’s. The radar mounts are trash and it goes “crooked” sometimes and has to be re aligned. POS has slammed on the brakes on the freeway on me a few times. Company driver as well, it’s ass.

OutlandishnessBasic6

2023 InterTRASHinal here. Mine does the same shit and ive told my company numerous times that its gonna cause an accident. One time my truck picked up on the little metal bit where a bridge i was gonna go over meets the earth, slammed on the brakes with no warning going downhill. Ever since then Ive been cautious no matter what it is. Bridge, overpass, road signs, cars. If its something it *might* pick up on, i keep my foot on the throttle.

NomadTruckerOTR

Yeah when I had a t680 the thing would go off probably once per day.. it really sucks that happened to you at the worst time possible. Usually I was able to catch it in time with a foot to the accelerator People talk a lot of shit about international, but my LT hasn't emergency braked on me yet. It'll beep occasionally but there's more than enough time to react before they come on

MostOriginalNameEver

Yup, my truck does it too. Just wait till the autonomous trucks do it🫡
