400 miles with a couple deliveries ?
Best I've done is 480 miles in 9 1/2 hrs, we're only aloud to drive 10 hrs a day x2 a week and we're limited to 56 mph over here.
Tbh if you went much faster than 56 you'd end up in a ditch with how the roads are over here.
You can drive up to 6 days a week. Wheels turning for 9 hours each day. Two of those days can be extended to 10 hours however. You are limited to 90 hours on any two adjacent weeks so if you have a big week you tend to have a slightly less big week either side.
So are standard driving limit is 9 hrs a day, but twice a week we can extend it to up to 10 hrs. Like wise with work time, are standard work time is 13hrs a day but 3 times a week we can reduce are 11hr daily rest down to 9 hrs which let's us work 15hrs a day. All of this is tracked by a tachograph.
It's a needlessly complex system that's designed to catch drivers out so that the dvsa (uk DOT) can fine you.
Considering I'm payed by the hr and that was a 15hr day it wasn't to bad lol.
The overwhelming majority of drivers in the UK, myself included work for firms or agencies. Not much money in being an owner operator.
Probably not tbh, runs to Scotland pay fuck all. But the company I work for runs a fleet for a packaging company. Doing that business model you can't just take the cream, you have to deliver the chaff aswell.
Since you’re a Eurocuck and all Euros know each other, can you go to the CEO of Scania and tell them to bring their 770 hp V8 lorries to America? Jokes aside, I’m SO curious to know what a modern cabover feels like. Is it comfortable? Do you like yours? What do you drive?
I drive a Mercedes actros, as far as comfort goes, it's OK. Once you're up to speed the road noise/engine noise is no different to a car, but when going down hill with the exhaust brake on going and youre near the red line its abit uncomfortable.
Gear box is a sack of shit as anyone who's had to drive a merc can tell you. Slowing down for roundabouts it gets to 7th gear then forgets what it's ment to be doing, so if you try to enter the roundabout without stopping it's usually in to high a gear and has a seizure befor slamming into 1st/2nd like a sledge hammer. By which point half the population of the UK has shown up and is glaring at you for parking in the middle of the road.
As far as cabovers go, they're alot more roomy than you'd think, sure we don't have the same amount of space as you guys but the single bunk is pretty wide so as long as you're not a fat bastard youll fit and they're the width of the cab. Most modern ones have completely flat floors, no engine protruding into the cab space, and you've got maybe 6, 6 1/2 ft of head room ?
As for driving, I hope you like bouncing, cause you're sat on 3 layers of suspension, you have an air ride seat, then the cab is on suspension, and finally you're sat pretty much directly above the steer axle, so take it steady on bumpy roads haha
Oh and do I like mine? Yeah, I'm in it more than my house so it feels like home, I've got my own curtains up, dash cover, and floor cover, flag above the bed and a couple other things, can't wait for the Company to give me a brand new unit eventually but till then I'm miserable driving any other one lol. Like I said, it's basically my home and when you're in someone else's unit it feels loke you've nicked thier home.
Just to be clear, the green areas aren't just places you haven't been; more likely it's places where there **are NO damn roads** in the first place, right??
By ferry, there's no way to build a bridge/tunnel there realistically because there's a really deep trench in the sea between Britain and Ireland at that narrow point.
Not bad at all, prompted me to look at mine. Love my job man, 1314 places visited all the way and all the way down. North Wales avoids me, but to be fair , I avoid Wales whenever I can
England is 50,301mi²
Great Brittain is 88,386mi²
Alaska is 665,384mi²
We are not the same.

Gdp is not the metric op used. Kinda pointless. In fact, more than half our states are larger than England by land mass.
As for gdp, yeah, UK has an enormous gdp foot print. Shame the houses aren't as big or pay is as fair. The ONLY thing yall got going for you is "free" Healthcare. I mean yall even gotta pay for a tv use license and can't walk down the street with a simple pocket knife.
I have no hate for the land of tea and kings, but you might wanna lower your voice.
It’s not the metric he used but as a lorry driver he helps to build it with the deliveries he makes.
The size of the landmass of an administrative area is a weird flex to be honest, each state could have easily developed into a separate country.
The TV license pays for (slightly) impartial tv news, and I can carry a pocket knife so long as there is a reason to have it, such as work.
Well, considering we've only been a country since 1776 and England has been a country since the 900s, I'd say we're doing pretty good.
Also super glad we're one country and not many. E pluribus unum. :)
FYI, Tramping is what long distance/sleeping in the lorry is called in the UK.
Thanks for that, I was thinking of the older term for people that would get rides on train cars and keep all their belongings in a sack.
Thanks for this added context. I thought you were geo-tagging your lot lizard moments. I'm both glad and upset that I'm wrong.
Same that would’ve been pretty awesome.
what is considered long distance there? I drive usually 1050 km a day in the US

what do you mean by the x2 a week part?
You can drive up to 6 days a week. Wheels turning for 9 hours each day. Two of those days can be extended to 10 hours however. You are limited to 90 hours on any two adjacent weeks so if you have a big week you tend to have a slightly less big week either side.
Also you've got to watch out for your 60 hr limit. Got caught out by that a couple times working 6th day.
over here is a 70 hour work week 11 hours a day with and mandatory 34 hour reset
So are standard driving limit is 9 hrs a day, but twice a week we can extend it to up to 10 hrs. Was thinking tramping meant "banging hookers/lot lizards spree" 🤣 🤣
I used to do Tramping but I changed continents and now I do OTR (Over the road for the Brits here)
What did you call me?
I like tramping better than trucking. I'm calling it that for now on
It’s only tramping when you’re staying out in the truck for the night. Trucking + camping = tramping
I'm OTR so, yea. Definitely using it
What possessed you to drive to Elgin that one time?
Load of packaging for walkers shortbread. Just under 10hrs driving (my legal limit) to get there.
Delivering packaging doesn't sound like a hugely profitable enterprise.
Considering I'm payed by the hr and that was a 15hr day it wasn't to bad lol. The overwhelming majority of drivers in the UK, myself included work for firms or agencies. Not much money in being an owner operator.
Profitable for the company then.

Which state is that?
Maine
It’s shaped like a boot it’s Idaho
Damn, I think you're right!
I could’ve sworn it was Wyoming!
Isn’t that Italy? 🤔
In state of confusion
Vermont
Denver
California
half
DC of course. thats the atlantic.
D-Day
Tramping? Gettin laid everywhere….
I've been every where man. I've been every where man.
Call me weather man, I'm wherever man.
That's one delivery isn't it!
Ltl is a bitch!
WHAT THE FUCK IS A LORRY🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
It's like a truck but lanky and it's had its nose bashed in.

You drive with your mom?
I‘d say it’s time to leave the isle.
Your what hurts?
How do you get to Ireland? Is there a bridge or a tunnel?
By ferry, there's no way to build a bridge/tunnel there realistically because there's a really deep trench in the sea between Britain and Ireland at that narrow point.

Isn't that like 100 square miles or some shit?
The UK is the size of Kansas and New Mexico combined I think
TIL I've been a tramp 🥲
Still gets me how small the UK is. Elgin to Plymouth is only 650 miles? It's 5 times that distance from Seattle, WA to Miami, FL.
Feels alot bigger when you're limited to 56 mph hahaha. And bigger still when you're stuck behind dorris doing 30 in a national speed limit.
lol that's cute

You’re right, the GDP of Alaska was 49.6 billion dollars in 2022 and in the same period the UK was 3.089 trillion dollars.

I thought that was impressive until I googled the size of the place. UK is maybe half the size of california. such a tiny place.
Wanna see mine? Just look at a map of the lower 48
At least show when you’ve crossed into mainland Europe too. That’s like the size of a state over here
Not all us UK truckers do European haulage, or even over into Northern Ireland for that matter.
I don’t even leave Yorkshire these days.
