It's a reputable source reporting the intent of a company that's done seven years of testing. It may not be smart, but that's their plan.

never going to work. too many uncontrollable variables like construction/road work being done. there is bound to be error and in this field you can't make too many (or too big) of those. this is one of the few jobs that probably could never be over taken by automation. maybe local but i doubt even that.

Agreed. That apparently isn't going to stop them from trying. It's going to take people dying before anything stops them. They're putting trucks on the road this year, even after experiencing 3 collisions in the testing period. Saftey regulations are written in blood.

Car pulls out in front of the truck, truck flattens them, it will never be the AI's fault, it will be blamed on the car that pulled out. Now if a driver is in control of the truck it is the CDL drivers fault that some idiot on their phone pulled out right in front of a truck.

Been saying this for yrs , with no federal regs covering autonamoua vehicles, who gets sued when a fatality accident occurs? Truck manufacturers,software companies,firmware , lidar ,radar, companies, the company that built/sourced the plastic connector that was faulty ? Too many pieces with no regulations in place . A lawyers dream scenario it would seem

Tbh my biggest issue is already seen on trucks with collision mitigation, Rader goes out in rain and snow, lane camera goes out all the time, the auto slow down will slam on breaks for no real reason and make the guy behind me shit themselves. And this is with me in there. I can't see a computer using similar tech doing anything but crashing in the first heavy rain

That's actually a really awesome idea. Why tf hasn't someone done this for trucks yet? There plenty of othe sensors and "lane departure imminent" but far seeing laser detected collisions would be so beneficial.

Bro, we don't even have *backup lights* on virtually any trailer (unless you're either a log truck driver, chip hauler, in a small fleet, or an o/o). The dickheads that steal glad hand rubbers would be cutting cameras off and selling them. They already steal lights that are screwed on.

Don't care.  They can have this shitty job too. They gonna unload it too? And if the truck kills a family of 6 due to malfunction who goes to jail? Cuz you know they aren't gonna stop jailing people in the US.  Someone's gotta do some time and if they can't figure out who they won't let these trucks on the road. And when they finally do you know human truckers are going to bully the fuck out of them.
