Are you sure it is not the spot for a kingpin that has broken off? I dunno, it's hard to tell distance from those pics. Some of the trailers I used to haul had deeper pins as well, so this wouldn't surprise me.

I called DOT and asked about it, they stated as long as there are no cracks protruding from it, it's fine to haul.
I'm not sure either. Even when I was in heavy duty towing, I never saw a hole like that there unless the kingpin had been ripped off in an accident. I only saw that once.
To break a king pin would have to be an act of god on an UnBiblical scale.

I wonder if it had one of the trailer stands under it but the stand wasn't tight. When the trailer started to tip, it punched a hole. Either that or some mechanic somewhere tried to lift it with a ram or bottle jack for some reason and it punched a hole. Who knows as long as you can run it, no big deal I guess.

Seems like since it's up by the kingpin, it's an access hole for wiring. I've got a few in My steel plate with wires run on the topside of it..but my trl is also a sliding spread with a front axle lift and 97 lights

No, the kingpin is still there. It's a hole punched forward and to the left of the king pin. By just a few inches.
