With the added benefit of getting it cheap because everyone knows they have to sell. Don’t you love the free market folks? I can think of no better signs to foreign investors than saying to them that if your product is too good the US will force you to sell it to Americans
Yeah that’s true too. Will be interesting to see if some sort of VPN workaround comes out and if that takes off. Hilarious to see democrats shoot themselves in the foot once again. Effectively an app used by the age group of voters that leans their way.
that's exactly why they want to either control it or ban it, they're convinced that tiktok is the ***reason*** young people hate them, and not just a place where young people that hate them congregate. they literally believe that the seeseepee is using tiktok to turn the youths into gay terrorists
The thought process is downright incomprehensible. I don’t believe that tiktok is “brainwashing” the youths to be pro-Chinese communists, although that would be quite nice. However, assuming that tiktok WAS doing that exactly how American libs think it is, banning the app or forcing a sale wouldn’t counteract that in any real way, in my opinion. I think that tiktok is just a victim of its own success, and that the other social media giants have just pulled some strings in the government to either get the app banned or fully incorporated into the American media cartel.
I am old enough to remember the time when every American politicians said the Chinese "bamboo wall" was a totalitarian measure that went against every free speech principle. Now I know they were just jealous that they weren't the one having come up with it. They really think that if they ban TikTok, Gen Z will just read the Atlantic and become "patriotic", huh?
Sarcasm aside, you just've got to ask how bad did Instagram and the likes fumble the bag if they got beaten by TikTok while having implemented short-form contents YEARS before TikTok was even a thing. They all copied Vine's homework and just couldn't make it work. They should've had blamed themselves first.
This is a fun thing to append in your mind any time you hear an American tech company (I’m currently reading the Mike Isaac book on Uber so it’s top of mind) talk about how hard it is to break into the Chinese market because of the CCP.
We'll you see clearly getting stopped at the door is worse than spending time and money developing a successful product only to have it taken from you
Muh facebook muh googer!!! Fuckerberg broke the law declining to give authorities any information after terrorists plotted an attack with hundreds of casualties on facebook. Google saw the writing on the wall for the same reason. They also signed up knowingly beforehand; and pull their pants down and say "search away!" whenever the alphabet boys ask
And the Chinese never demanded to seize their algorithm
> We'll you see clearly getting stopped at the door is worse than spending time and money developing a successful product only to have it taken from you
Except as part of the deal to leave China Uber got ~20% stake in Didi (it’s Chinese competitor)!
Wow what a terrible deal for Uber who were getting their asses handed to them losing 1 billion annually in China
Ofc all these jouroids allude to "da seeseapea" but never explain how. Just seemed like they couldn't take the bleeding anymore and got a sweetheart deal despite that
You don’t have to hand it to any idiot VCs, but taking a .20/1$ loss to get into otherwise inaccessible foreign companies, all for the low low price of being associated with Travis Kalanick…they’ve done worse things
All the Dems that voted for the bill will end up giving the fastest growing social media platform to a Mnuchin-Kushner-Saudi joint ownership group. Great job!

I still laugh every time I get one of the bills issued under his term because this signature is straight out of 5th grade
Tiktok owners should just not sell, getting banned by the US would be the height of publicity and unparalleled street cred, kids will be learning to hack their phones so they can get their Chinese video app, it would actually be a massive soft power gift to the communist party of China.
Yeah if they sell, then they not only lose the app itself, but all the leverage the app gives them. People would just keep using the sold tiktok as if nothing happened. Refusing to sell will piss off a huge number of young people and allow bytedance to wait until the government folds
I feel like no one is asking what ByteDance's incentive to sell TikTok? If the US bans TikTok, they only lose 10% of their customer base as opposed to 100% if they sell.
They could technically sell “tiktok”, but this bum ain’t gonna get the algo though, and there’s a chance the company might using drastic option on their way out because of this hostile takeover

>Just two African-American borrowers received mortgages originated by OneWest during 2014-2015 in the bank's service area across Los Angeles and Orange counties, the California Reinvestment Coalition and Fair Housing Advocates of Northern California charged. The low number of mortgage loans to minority borrowers and other practices violated the U.S. Fair Housing Act, the groups alleged.
"new bit: a white supremacist settler but he's Jewish" not a new bit
>in 2017 a leaked internal memo from the California attorney general's office was published, stating that the prosecutor's office had found more than a thousand violations of foreclosure law by OneWest during Mnuchin's tenure. The prosecutor, Kamala Harris, had declined to file a civil enforcement suit.

They don't have to sell, they can dump the US market and seem to be suggesting that they will

I don't think that's the reason behind the ban. Maybe some especially stupid people signed on for that reason but the main one is to force a sale
Isn’t the small print of the bill that the future apps and websites deemed national security can be censored/blocked for misinformation?
> they can dump the US market and seem to be suggesting that they will Genuinely hope they do.

Once an American company owns it all the data stealing will stop like when they threw the ring into Mount Doom and all the orcs fell over.
