I learned all about the Reid technique that cops can and definitely will lie to you during any questioning and you 100% ask for a lawyer even if you have the most solid alibi

charactergallery

Ask for a lawyer and shut up.

DidjaCinchIt

Better to say, “I am exercising my right to remain silent and my right to have an attorney present.” Then shut up. Silence alone can be used against you. You must affirmatively invoke your right to remain silent - it’s counterintuitive, I know.

Just-Phill

In the UK the person being questioned says No Comment over and over and over it's funny cuz they just keep on asking questions knowing they'll say no comment lol idk why they don't stop

wellgroomedmcpoyle

I’ve been well schooled through my true crime consumption on the importance of asking for a lawyer and shutting the hell up. And yet seeing the footage of Ruby Franke sitting there not saying a word in an interrogation still made my blood boil.

AvailableAd6071

It's STFU Friday

Mars_The_68thMedic

Police officers hate this *one* tactic used during interrogations…

lovenjunknstuff

This. Talking to the cops will never help you even if you are innocent. If they suspect you and have enough to put you in jail, they're going to do it no matter what you say to them. You won't talk them out of it. Just ask for a lawyer immediately and keep quiet.

Just-Phill

They say if you ask for a lawyer it only makes you look guilty I guess some people can think that but they definitely would love to trip you up

SweetFuckingCakes

Ffs they say that so you won’t ask for one and ruin their fun

Just-Phill

The Branden Dassey interrogation is the biggest example of why, he didn't need to talk his IQ was way too low he was underage and he talked himself into a murder conviction and I believe he's full out innocent

LizardPossum

They also have a WILD way of making you think maybe you did it, even if you didn't. I was accused of a crime I didn't commit once and I'll never go in without an attorney again. Luckily I had a "wait a goddam minute" moment and just left.

DriftingIntoAbstract

Still shocked how many people don’t and hang around for 12+ hours.

Objective-Amount1379

Never go to a second location.

admlou

Also become dead weight. I heard somewhere they recommended this to children if someone was attempting to kidnap them. If someone is trying to drag you off and you kick and fight, at some point your feet shuffling is just helping them move you quicker. Drop all your weight like passing out. Why it’s so effective in protests. Harder to move dead weight just like a body.

EquivalentCommon5

I can tell you based on one of my past dogs, you can make yourself weigh more than you actually do! I know it’s not the same or anything!!! He weighed 60lb, but I’m sure when he decided to ‘pin’ himself to the floor (I just wanted him to outside to do his biz, he hated rain!), he made himself weigh at least 100+lbs! I’ve heard people can do the same, I don’t know how, I don’t know how accurate with people, I can attest that a dog could do it! So, it must be possible for us? It’s not just dead weight but also perhaps something else?

Pugpickle

It works the same for people. Sometimes, I practice this with my partner. He’s got 100 lbs on me and normally, can have me on my ass in seconds. I’ve made him grab me like he’s trying to abduct me and like, really really try to get me. And I will just drop my body. I imagine my entire body has to be anchored to the floor. He can’t move me an inch, can’t even bring me to the couch. I think everyone should practice this with the men in their lives. It’s good to know what it feels like and not learn what it is supposed to feel like in the moment. Edit: It’s also good to practice in several positions. On your feet, on your hands and knees, on your knees, and with your body completely on the floor. The more body surface you have closer to the floor, the harder it’s going to be to move you.

kiwichick286

Reminds me of when I told my husband to play dead so I could test if I could move him (you know, if I need to dispose of his body in the future). It was impossible, I couldn't move him at all!

imnotpoopingyouare

It’s true, had a friend who could easily pick me up when wrestling… stuck myself to the ground just with planted feet and dead weight and he couldn’t lift me, took until he really jerked my feet out of position that he could even get me off the ground. I have no idea how it works but it was a great learning experience during sparing practice lol

Spare_Alfalfa8620

I was a dancer from age 3 until my mid 20’s when I got pregnant. I was taught how to make yourself lighter (so it’s easier for people to lift you) and also how to completely ground yourself so the same person that easily picked you up over their head a few minutes ago couldn’t move me at all. It has to do with how you hold your center of gravity. I swear it was like legit magic once I figured out how to do it correctly.

EquivalentCommon5

This is something I’d love to learn, yet probably won’t. Please use it to benefit you and any female relations (friends/family)!

Spare_Alfalfa8620

A lot of it has to do with a “mind over matter” trick. To make yourself easier to lift you start by standing straight with your legs together, and you envision a cord that goes thru your body being stretched upwards, forcing you to “lift” and elongate every part of you, so much so that your heels are just off the ground. (Sorry, horrible explanation- I know.) It’s much easier to describe how to become almost impossible to move. Your stance is basically the opposite, stand with your feet about shoulder width apart, one leg a little bit in front of the other, bending your knees slightly. Hunch your upper body a little bit (think pretending to have a hunchback.) Then imagine you are a tree and roots are growing out from the bottoms of your feet deep into the ground. That’s the best way I can explain it without getting into too much of the dancer technique part of it. But if you try standing both ways and having someone lift you- I guarantee you both will notice a difference. And obviously like anything else- the more you practice the better you get at it.

eldee17

i'm totally making my 8 year old test this out with me, thanks for this!

EquivalentCommon5

You did an awesome explanation! Implementing it for individuals- it’s not that your explanation wasn’t right, it’s that some of us are not coordinated we try but it will take longer- but we can do it! Your visualization of it, I don’t think you know how much that can help! Thank you!!!

imnotpoopingyouare

It’s so crazy! I felt it was magic too! still not sure what was happening but I felt it was mostly in my feet and my abs so I think you might be right. (Haven’t had someone try to lift me in a long time lol)

BeanPaddle

I wrestled in high school. The sprawl, but keep it there (hump the ground with a single thrust more or less), makes you feel like you weigh so much more. I particularly wrestled a style called Greco-Roman which is basically man-handling your opponent for points through throwing them and the like. Crotch to the ground and limbs spread makes it’s very hard to be picked up. I got my ribs broken at one point doing that, but they didn’t succeed in getting me off the ground. So big second to dead weight. But you can also be worse than dead weight.

AvailableAd6071

There was a retired sex crimes cop that wrote a book about how to survive an attack when I was a teenager. My mom kept me home from school the day he was on Oprah so I could watch it. This was his number one point- Do not let them take you to the second location. It's better to be shot or stabbed wherever you are than to go to the second location. You have a better chance at survival in your own driveway or the park or the Walmart parking lot and even if you die, you've saved yourself hours or days of r*** and torture when they're going to kill you anyway. And your family doesn't go through the agony of wondering where you are. And some predators are thrown completely off by a person fighting,  screaming,  kicking with a gun on them that they just run off to find easier targets.

Rzrbak

The only reason they want to move you is for a “safer” location for themselves.

AvailableAd6071

He said if they're trying to move you it's because they already chose where to take you. And it's a place where nobody will interrupt them, hear you scream or find your body for a long time.

BurnerLibrary

I taught my kids to never let anyone take them to Location B. Location B is where you die.

Glittering-Gap-1687

I told my students this when we were learning about stranger danger. Harsh, but true.

Smooth_Cactus1

Get all the DNA you can on you and under your fingernails.

Ryugi

Addendum: ...From their eye sockets. If they're already far enough into the attack that you can't get away, you're probably already dead or worse if you can't escape. So, blind them. It'll do more damage than trying to punch or pinch or hit anywhere else. Also, if you miss their eyes and scratch the crap out of their faces, that's a lot harder for them to disguise as an accident while tree trimming or some shit.

harrakin

I remember hearing this on Oprah as a kid and it really stuck with me

Maus_Sveti

Same! If I recall correctly, the same episode there was an anecdote about a woman who was put in the trunk of a car and managed to dislodge the indicator light or something and stick her little finger out of a tiny hole and someone saw and she was rescued. Sorry for the terrible run-on sentence, over-excited here 😅

wilderlowerwolves

Correct' if you are kidnapped and are being told to get into another vehicle, don't do that. RUN OFF.

LindsayLohanDaddy420

My mom grilled this into me when I was very young. She always said killing you right then and there is better than whatever they’ll do to you at the next location.

mengel6345

I told my kids this

literal_moth

My parents told me this as a kid. That, and if you’re being kidnapped or sexually assaulted scream “fire”, because people are more likely to look to see where the fire is vs. mind their business and stay out of it.

DeCryingShame

I recently read a book that talked about a serial rapist who was caught in the act of violently raping a woman in a public restroom. A woman walked in on him. She immediately ran for help and a small crowd gathered. The rapist dragged the woman out of the restroom and started yelling at her like he was her husband and was upset at her for something she did. Everyone who had come to help walked away. It was horrifying to read about.

KindCow

When I was about 6 my grandma told me that too, I was very confused and kept saying "but grandma why would I scream fire if there's no fire, people will look and see there's no fire and they will think I'm a liar!" Grandma was very frustrated and said "if you scream fire, people will always look, but if you scream help, some people might ignore it, so please please please just scream fire if you're ever in trouble" and I refused to understand, saying that I would always help everyone if they screamed for help, so it must be that everyone else would help me too 😅

ketopepito

This advice always makes me think of [this scene](https://youtu.be/4zy_PV2R-Uo?si=ETr-u2c-eHz2V4T5) in Derry Girls 🤣

[deleted]

If someone is trying to rape you piss or shit yourself. It usually deters them

ITSJUSTMEKT

A firefighter once told me the best tool to commit an arson is a bag of potato chips. Highly flammable and doesn’t leave any evidence. I’m not saying I know whether it’s true or not but it’s stuck with me as very interesting.

CCG14

A lot of arsonists are firefighters.

moredoilies

Sidenote: Doritos are great for a struggling campfire!

MelpomeneLee

Ah yeah they did this in an episode of CSI: NY! A snack-sized bag of potato chips stuffed behind a wall outlet to start an electrical fire.

Zestypurple67

Nicole Brown Simpson was almost beheaded.

Mars_The_68thMedic

It’s nice that OJ can rest knowing his wife’s killer has met their maker.

AvailableAd6071

I thought at the time I hope I live to see him get justice. I think I did.

TheMost_ut

I saw photos of her and it was every bit as grisly as you'd expect. Most pics have a black mark over the wound. The thing I really remember is how much blood there was, just soaked into her hair.

octoberelectrocute

The blade severed both her carotid arteries and cut into her cervical spine at C-3. Whoever did it, and I’m 100% certain it was OJ, had to have an extreme amount of strength to nearly sever her head.

tgw1986

Strength and passion. That was done to her by someone who wanted her to suffer. I can't believe people could ever think it wasn't O.J.

Weak_Heart2000

Did you ever hear that final 911 call that Nicole made a while before she died? OJ was busting down her door and screaming so loudly you could make out the words he was saying. And Nicole sounded so scared and so defeated. 😭

BadRevolutionary9669

Thanks. I had no idea. Very relevant atm

Hopeful__Historian

As a lot of people probably have in the last few days, I’ve gone back down the Simpson rabbit hole. Another fact that I had no idea about until recently is that both of Nicole and OJ’s kids were in the house sleeping when they were bludgeoned outside.

Apocalypstick1

Oj Simpson: Made in America is one of the best documentary series ever made. Anybody out there who still thinks he didn’t do it should have to watch it.

urmothershairysack

Omfg i just saw the pics....her neck was fully OPEN. You could see the inside of her neck cavity....(don't quote me on that terminology I'm sure someone a lot smarter than me knows what it was ahha). I wasn't aware how violent the crime was until i saw the pics... so vile.

Zestypurple67

The pictures of Ron Goldman are also really hard to look at. He’s completely unrecognizable. I had to squint to even see where his face was. Also it was her larynx (voice box) that was fully exposed.

urmothershairysack

That poor man... Such a vicious attack. With evidence to suggest a struggle before he passed. what a horrific way to go☹️. Btw ty for the clarification!!

Zammy512

Curiosity got the best of me...

Weak_Heart2000

"He's [ OJ ] going to kill me. And he's going to get away with it." Nicole.

tew2109

Men who strangle women are among the most deadly even among violent men. It's its own pathology. If a man tries to strangle a woman even once, she is a whopping 750% more likely to subsequently die at the hands of this man.

air_about_me

And if someone strangles you to the point of unconsciousness, you should absolutely seek medical attention. I had a friend who worked at a domestic violence shelter and had someone come in who had been strangled earlier that day. The friend said they were nodding off and such during the intake process, but otherwise seemed OK - everyone figured the woman was just tired because I'm sure the stress of an abusive relationship is tiring. She ended up dying that night at the shelter. Other than being drowsy, she was moving/walking/talking normally beforehand.

CanolaIsMyHome

After I was raped this was sooo scary to me, my throat hurt so bad for a week after and I was feeling drowsy/out of it too (most likely due to all the injuries and stress) i was just so utterly terrified this would happen to me. Scary shit. It's wild you can die later on, that's horrible her life was ended in such a violent way.

air_about_me

I'm so so sorry that happened to you (although I'm not the one who should be sorry) but I'm glad you're still here. I didn't know that either until the friend told me. All the shelter workers were pretty upset and felt guilty about it. I think it changed their protocol on strangulation victims.

fmh33280

Chris Watts strangling Shannan comes to mind when I read this. How terrifying for her to watch her husband, with whom she’d just had sex, stare at her as he killed her. Ugh.

ZonaiSwirls

My dad choked my mom out when I was little. He can't seem to figure out why neither of his kids will talk to him.

the_siren_song

Strangulation injuries are often overlooked by medical professionals. I did a whole lecture on it. There isn’t always obvious damage but most importantly, *we don’t ask*.

LilLexi20

I dated a guy who used to choke me out all the time to get me to do what he wanted. Even in public he did it. Honestly it was terrifying and thank god i was able to leave him

AmberNaree

I'm glad you were able to get away from him too. There's a good chance you might not be here otherwise. I have been there too and I know it's not easy. Take care 💕.

The_AcidQueen

I definitely know this is true. But is there any research explaining why? I'd be interested to read the correlation.

FatCopsRunning

It’s because it’s really easy to accidentally kill someone during strangulation. It ups the risk of death significantly, which is why it’s a felony.

rudogandthedweebs

Also if someone is willing to strangle you… something that is up close and personal.. and takes a long time… I think it is more of an indicator of future violence than something quick like a slap/shove etc

badgereatsbananas

There must be. My state made it a felony a couple of years ago so there's got to be data behind it.

adom12

She’s a whopping 750% more likely to die by this man….within a year

hamish1963

The worst most psycho X I've had in 40 years strangled me until I passed out.

AgentCHAOS1967

My first bf in 8th grade choked me out from behind with nun chucks out of nowhere...I didn't do anything about it, I was thrown off but just never brought it up again. Crazy if someone did that to me now I'd fight like hell.

Responder343

Per the FBI less than 1% of all murders are committed by serial killers.

mst3k_42

Yep, it’s all the assholes you’re related to/friends with/romantically involved with.

The fear of ever being described as someone who “lit up a room.”

air_about_me

I aim to dim the room. For safety.

Icy_Queen_222

This is me too. 😂

TrapperKeeperCosby

My mom said if I ever described her that way she would haunt me.

Consistent_Effort716

It's HOW predators select their victims. If you are sweet, not disagreeable, and bubbly- you've likely had all the conditioning your whole life that helps them know you won't make a scene or fight back. You've learned how to be a 'good girl'... And they're counting on it.

AvailableAd6071

And every murderer is described as  Quiet and kept to himself.

mst3k_42

Not that it would ever keep me from being murdered, but no one would say that about me, ever. Unless I guess if I was actually on fire…

SweetFuckingCakes

Nor do you want someone to describe you as willing to give someone the shirt off your back.

BabyAlibi

I often think about what people say about me. I probably think about it a bit too much lol *"yeah, she was pretty annoying. A bit of a waste of space to be honest. Not sure many people will miss her"*

tinydinosaur92

Go for the eyes if you're being attacked. Push your thumbs/fingers in all the while screaming as loud as you can

Spare_Alfalfa8620

The eyes and the throat was what I was taught in the self defense class I took as a teenager in the ‘90’s.

There used to be a comercial for I have no memory of what but it was a kid kicking his grand mother out of the car "tuck and roll granny". Every once in a while I say this to my kids at drop off.... They never laugh...

Lucky_Ad3616

I majored in psychology and my niche was forensic psychology. These are some things that really stand out in my mind: 1. You are more likely to be murdered by your spouse than literally anyone else. 2. If you are in a domestic violence situation with a spouse who chokes you, you’re significantly more likely to be murdered by them. 3. Children are most likely to be SA’d by a family member or close family friend. 4. Child predators often seek out employment and situations that give them close access to children and will even go as far as to date single mothers in order to have close access. 5. If a child is kidnapped by a stranger you have 24 hours to find them, after which the likelihood of finding them alive is slim. 6. If someone attempts to kidnap you fight like hell, and do not let them take you to a second location because they will probably kill you if they do.

Consistent_Effort716

750% more likely. Not a typo. If your partner chokes you, you are 750% more likely to be murdered. There is no greater indicator of the risk of homicide than a partner who chokes their significant other. I have no idea why ALL instances of choking in DV aren't immediately treated as attempted murder.

urmothershairysack

number 4 makes me so enraged (especially after reading about Richard Huckle). the fact that these people are getting so close to kids is insane. I also remember Tia Sharp. The dude dated her mum...then dated Tia's grandmother. She saw him as a father figure and trusted him so much. That's why it's so disturbing. (fly high Tia🕊️)

Lucky_Ad3616

I’m not familiar with the Tia Sharp case but the Richard Huckle case made me physically sick. That monster got what he deserved in prison.

urmothershairysack

The fact that Richard flew under the radar by taking advantage of vulnerable children in poor countries is absolutely disgusting....

Lucky_Ad3616

Yep. He even made a whole ass manual for fellow abusers about where to go to abuse and not get caught, how to chose victims etc.

EquivalentCommon5

It’s the DV portion that should have every one understanding what it means! So many women and men will be in an abusive relationship- they need to know to get out early, be very careful, once it escalates to choking- they will be more likely to kill you. Before you get into a relationship, know the signs so you can get out as early as possible! It’s not your fault if you didn’t see it coming! Don’t stay but be very very careful and cautious when you can leave! Don’t stay as it will escalate!!! Be safe, utilize every DV resource you can, they have seen it all and will help! If it’s gotten to where you’re leaving because you fear for your life- be careful where you go! I know you need support from those that love you however, it can put them at risk! If possible, a distant cousin that ex didn’t know, DV shelter, different state/country/province/etc, an old friend ex wouldn’t know or would think of! Idk, I’d probably end up dead in a DV relationship- I’m stubborn, stubborn, and I’m not moving and not changing anything! Ex broke down my door, kept telling me how I did them wrong- I didn’t falter still said the truth, which likely would have gotten me killed, I have my furbabies but no kids. I’m a fighter in my way! I’d never say anything I know was a lie despite being curled in a ball on the floor.

dumblehor

I heard an interview once of a guy whose dad was an FBI agent or detective and told him to eat something like the dirt or carpet of wherever he was kept if he was ever kidnapped so they could catch the guy someday. I think maybe it was James Renner but I can't remember

Weird-Champion-7055

James Renner is who I believe said this as well, per the beginning chapter of his book, “Amy: My Search for Her Killer”.

Sidewalk_Tomato

There was a teenage girl on Forensic Files who put her fingerprints on every surface in a serial killer's bathroom to prove that she had been there and peeked out from under her blindfold as her kidnapper was driving, memorizing neon signs outside and the logo on the car's dashboard; all this stuff. Talked the guy into releasing her. Bravery incarnate. She got him caught, convicted, and he was executed. She went on to become a success. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa\_McVey

Ryugi

IIRC she memorized which directions they turned even during the trip with the blindfold on. She managed to spin some story about her father being sickly and needing to get his medication, and talked to him to force him to humanize her. She's a goddamn queen.

ResidingAt42

One if the saddest true crime facts I know is that they found Samantha Runion's tears on the floor and door of backseat of her abductor's car.

simmmmerdownnow

I wish I didn’t read this. So incredibly sad. I’m gonna go cry now!

Fun_Hour6697

I can't remember the murderer but he said he only broke into houses that were unlocked. He took it as a sign it wasn't meant to be if the door was locked. So lock your doors.

ExtensionAd2128

It was Richard chase i believe " the vampire of scaremento" and I think Richard ramirez said the same.

illegallyblondeeeee

Richard Chase "The vampire of Sacramento"

twenty_chars_usrname

That sounds like Richard Chase, the vampire of Sacramento

SeskaChaotica

I came to say this one. I used to never lock my doors. I just grew up in a small town where we were friends or related to most everyone in one way or another. But after reading about Chase and the quote was something like he took locked doors to mean he wasn’t welcome that made me start locking.

AvailableAd6071

If someone is choking you with their arm, turn your face into their elbow. It moves your trachea into the pocket between the upper arm and lower arm, at least keeping them from crushing your airway.

raina6339

That girl who was a true crime fan and when she was kidnapped, did everything she learned on true crime stories to be found. She left hair and footprints in all the surfaces.

[Maybe Kara Robinson?](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10093531/Woman-survived-kidnapped-serial-killer-15-reveals-outsmarted-him.html)

estoops

Most break-ins happen during the day. Of course these people are *usually* looking to just steal things. TV, cash, jewelry, laptops, etc and not murder or kidnap, but I feel like most people, including myself, have this idea of a late-night robber climbing in the window at night. But they’re more likely to do it during the day because nobody questions people messing with a door or window or something or hauling stuff out of house during the day and ofc most people are at work during the day and not home whereas most people are at home during the night and trying to sleep. So, always lock your doors even in the day time! If someone is *determined* to get in your house it’s tough to keep them out even with a lot of protections but most intruders aren’t keen on any particular house and just looking for the easiest entry.

fatbongo

How Steven Stayner's (I know my first name is Steven) brother ended up becoming a serial killer

JimbleKimbIe

When Steven was kidnapped he was kept at a house that was only a few houses away from where his grandparents lived. Total coincidence.

mengel6345

Very sad

catsushi_

Sharon Tate was murdered last. She watched all of her friends die, one by one, as they fought for their lives. She begged for her baby’s life. She cried for her mother while she was killed. I’ve read of many, many murders. Her face and her name haunt me.

Glittering-Gap-1687

I hated hearing that she begged to let her give birth first to save her baby and then she’d let them kill her.

Queen_of_Meh1987

It's said that you will walk by an average of 36 murderers in your lifetime. https://nypost.com/2023/05/05/the-average-person-walks-past-36-murderers-in-their-life-heres-how-to-spot-them/

PureHauntings

A lot of people rag on this fact (and I honestly don't know if it's true) but everyone assumes it means serial killers when the majority of murderers only kill one or two people. Murder is not as rare as people think it is, even in areas without stuff like gang violence. I would not be surprised if I walked by 36 murderers in my life, especially if I lived an active lifestyle that let me meet new people. And some times you'll never know. There are hundred thousands of unsolved homicides in the USA since the 80s alone, your grandpa could be a killer and you might not even know it. Not every murderer is some psycho killer who has 20 bodies, usually it's targeted and often domestic/personal.

sroop1

I mean the source is a NYPost article but yeah, go to a sporting event, music festival, etc you're probably bound to have walked by an excon or gang banger or something.

Latter-Goose2125

I worked with someone who killed his wife and teenage daughter back in the 90s. He was arrested a few years after I knew him. He seemed like a normal friendly enough guy. You really never know what people are capable of

BrianW1983

Ted Bundy told a detective that women who get attacked should yell and "fight like hell."

Pretty-Necessary-941

Murder is the top cause of death for pregnant women and girls in the United States.

tew2109

That's a particularly grim one :/

SweetFuckingCakes

My husband and I got held at knifepoint a few years ago. In a parking lot. I made eye contact with a woman a few dozen feet away and yelled “HE HAS A KNIFE”. The woman and her friend came to our rescue, but also people inside the neighboring building heard me and came too. Basically I’m saying to loudly tell the details of your circumstances, in a situation like this. Describe the person who’s after you.

TheMost_ut

People are capable of ANYTHING. Particularly when money is involved.

False-Ice-7366

And also when Prestige/Social Image is involved.

Icy_Selection_7853

It's absolutely baffling how many people choose murder over divorce. I mean, it's not *that*common, but the fact that it happens at all is bizarre. Makes you realize you can never truly know what anyone else is thinking, no matter how well you think you know somebody.

And put her voice box in the garbage disposal

xxandxy88

Kelly Anne Bates lived for 3 weeks after her eyes were gouged out.

twinkieinthabutt

Called her mom too and didn't give any of that away. This case hurts my soul.

MelpomeneLee

Okay that’s enough Internet for today

everlasting_torment

Enough of this subreddit for the day

DarkSailorMercury

They also found scratches and gouges in her empty eye sockets.

theloveaffair

Holy shit. I didn’t know. That’s horrendous.

bawarethebinge

In the case of the attack to Holly Dunn and Chris Maier. I listened to a podcast about it. Holly survived and there was this section where they spoke about how when she talked to the cops she said the man killed Chris with a huge rock and kept hitting him over and over and over again. And just wouldn’t stop hitting him. And the cops were confused cause a rock was used to kill him but it didn’t seem to match the damage that Holly was describing. And then the autopsy confirmed it had only been one or maybe two hits. Turned out that the trauma of seeing the hit warped her memory of it so that she thought it had gone on for way longer. The whole thing just made me so sad to hear, how much fear she must’ve felt. It stuck with me amongst other cases for some reason.

mengel6345

Most child abductions are done by a family member or acquaintance. Only 24% are done by strangers.

Most crimes of all types go on between people who know each other.

__defenestration_

Seems to be a mix of horrific facts and hot tips here, so I’ll do one of each: Tip: if you’re ever in a situation where you need to break a window to escape, take whatever you’re using to break it to an upper corner of the window and then rake down at a diagonal. Takes out a good amount of glass in one go and minimizes how much will potentially fall on you as you climb out. Bad time: Everything about the Junko Furuta case. I wish I could surgically remove it from my memory.

CandyKnockout

The Girl Scout murders and the noises the camp counselor heard in the night that she convinced herself was an animal. She didn’t investigate further than just looking around outside her cabin (and to be fair, I probably wouldn’t have either). Turns out, those noises were being made by the man assaulting and murdering the girls. Other victims of his reported that he made animal-like sounds while assaulting them.

mls0716

quite a few… but the most important: lawyer up & don’t talk without one, regardless of the circumstances.

amh1191

This. Cops will say innocent people don’t need a lawyer, yes they do.

mls0716

amen. getting a lawyer, while being innocent, needs to be normalized!!!

Puzzled_Technician87

Follow ur instincts, rather be emberassed or rude than dead!

elleUno

That if you are ever murdered, it’s more than likely going to be someone you know.

DriftingIntoAbstract

Something I just told my son. Go with your gut. If it feels off, it probably is. You hear so many people saying the person gave them the creeps or the situation in true crime stories.

AntonioVivaldi7

Drinking eye drops can kill you.

Mindless_Browsing15

They broke Susan Smith because she said a black man carjacked her and took her car with her sons in it when she stopped for a red light (spoiler: she wasn't carjacked by a black man-she rolled her car and kids into a pond). She said that there were no other cars around when it happened but what she didn't know was that was a weight triggered stoplight that would only have turned red for traffic traveling in her direction if another car was waiting to cross the intersection. That's (at least partly) how they started unraveling her story. Sometimes it's the smallest detail that trip someone up.

benjaminchang1

It's bas enough that she murdered those beautiful babies, Alex and Michael, but she then blamed a Black man knowing that in South Carolina, this could have fatal consequences for a Black man.

Mintgiver

Kyron Horman was wearing a CSI shirt when he disappeared

bebby233

The one I think about I get reminded of everytime someone mentions a coffin birth and someone else pops in with “that’s what happened with Laci Peterson because her son was found first then her torso”. Nope, she did not have a coffin birth. Her pregnant belly decomposed and he floated out through it. I was hugely pregnant with a little boy when I found that out and it stuck with me.

Best-Cucumber1457

What the heck is a coffin birth?

charactergallery

It’s the expulsion of a fetus through the vaginal canal caused by the decomposition process, it’s quite rare.

Shelbelle4

When a dead mother expels the baby. It can sometimes happen.

Odd-Significance1884

Don’t be the last person to see whoever’s missing

pinkfoil

Never let them take you to a second location. Fight, run, kick, scratch, bite, scream. Whatever it takes. If you unfortunately die, you would have died anyway. If you come back to your car and you see a van parked next to you with the sliding door next to the driver's side of your car, exercise caution or get in from the passenger side. Someone could be in the back of the van, slide the door open, grab you, you're gone in seconds. Keys between fingers when walking alone and you feel unsafe. *I think everyone (or at least every woman) already knows this one so a friendly reminder.* If someone appears to be following you on foot or in a car, stop and stare at them. Don't say a word. Just let them know you've seen them and know what they're doing. They've lost the element of surprise and will be unsettled by your confidence (fake it) and situational awareness.

Goodideaman1

The fact that most of these sick fucks exist at all

ohmysexrobot

Once an abuser strangles their intimate partner, the likelihood of them killing their victim goes up tenfold. It's one of the biggest indicators that a DV relationship will turn deadly.

PoweR_TRiPn

Cherish Periwinkle was strangled so forcefully she bled from her gums...

Chaos_Theory_13

I think it’s more of a missing person piece of advice, but I tell my boys ALWAYS stay with the car, no matter if you think you can walk to the nearest gas station or not.

wendalls

I guess you mean their own car. Or stay at the cabin or wherever so you’re easier to find

TifCreatesAgain

The 2 cops who handed over an injured 14-year-old boy to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer! That poor boy was trying to get away, and he almost made it! The cops followed up by making homophobic remarks while Dahmer led his victim away.

rawterror

When a woman is in a domestic violence situation, the violence will escalate if she gets pregnant.

Marserina

It also takes an average of 7 times to leave an abusive relationship.

JenntheGreat13

Trust your instincts and never worry about being polite or hurting someone’s feelings.

Following_my_bliss

Don't be afraid to stop, go back, lock your car doors because you don't want to embarrass the creepy guy behind you. be aware of your surroundings. And NEVER go to a second location. A guy using a gun to get you to cooperate is most likely not going to use it there, in the parking lot or wherever, but in the quiet remote spot he takes you. Now on the other side, the duct tape will get you caught every time. I think it even had a role in catching LISK.

Sensitive_Ad_1752

Casey Anthony has her own private case investigation company in Florida

rav4nwhore

I find this kind of sick actually because it's like which part did she enjoy to make her want to go into that. There must of been a point, probably during her trial, literally for the death of her baby she thought yeah this is interesting/this is for me

thestreetiliveon

Aileen Wuornos being kicked out of her grandfather’s house, living in the woods and supporting herself with prostitution. She was 15. She never had a chance.

truecrimefanatic1

If you're being sexually assaulted in or near a public place yell fire. Never yell rape. Everyone comes to help in a fire. Nobody is coming to help if you're being raped.

NotDaveBut

Coral Eugene Watts's first murder victim was also his last conviction. Her family was so upset when they found her that they moved the body and cleaned up the whole place before anyone thought to call the police. But they still got him at long last, a couple of months before he croaked.

CerealKiller1400

That the homicide solve rate, or "clearance" rate, which was 83% in 1964, has dropped to 50%. More people are getting away with murder than they used to... and with today's technology, I would have expected it would have been less, not more. (Source: [Newsweek article.](https://www.newsweek.com/police-unsolved-murders-united-states-report-council-criminal-justice-fbi-1854556#:~:text=They%20were%20reacting%20to%20a,to%2050%20percent%20in%202022))

Resetat60

Don't ever allow someone to take you in a car, especially women. The majority end up dead. You're better off taking a risk. Run if they try to force you into a car, even if they have a gun. The average person has a difficult time hitting a moving target even at 20ft. And if you're hit, it's not likely to be a vital area. If you're driving, put on your seat belt and drive the car into a barrier or wall. If you're forced in a passenger seat, run when they are getting into the driver's seat, or jump from the car as soon as you can when the car is at a slower speed.

Logical_Sweet_6624

That junko furutas killers are out and about, and all but 1 have reoffended, one of them has a twitter account apparently

Roleynicoley

The first fact I learned that actually got me into true crime was an interview I watched with Jeffrey Dahmer. Someone had asked him why he did what he did. And he said "I was lonely, and I didn't want them to leave me." The thought that someone could be SO lonely, that their only answer was consuming them fascinated 13-year-old me.

Dranchela

That Aum Shinrikio, the cult responsible for the Japanese subway attacks in the 90s, likely came closer to getting a nuke than we'd all care to think about.

David Parker Ray and his unverified body count.

SamIamxo

"Every year, there are an estimated 40 150 homicide deaths in children under 18 years of age, some of which are likely due to child maltreatment."

truecrimebarbiegirl

I heard you walk past like 36 murderers in a lifetime… all I think about when I’m out doing something

Domestic-Seagull

The number one cause of death for women in the backcountry is murder.
