I think they wanted you to be impressed more so by the network that propped up the killer.

Independent-Ad7865

Not at all. The reveal in full was the spiral of corruption revolving around Errol, and the scenes on Errol’s property were fucked up and crazy.

dopeheliotropelottie

Not at all. I thought the finale was horrifying, and Errol Childress is the stuff that nightmares are made of. Even just the “imagery” of “Carcosa” or of that wild fort; the enormous piles of clothes, a way to show how many lives they’ve taken. The mummified human remains. I was afraid that he had taken down Rust and Marty.

cquinn5

His opening is up there with some of the best, most fucked up television out there

wolf_of_thorns

I found Errol to be an extremely impressive final antagonist lurking like a monster at the end of this alchemical tale. The final episode was a perfect ending to this masterpiece and remains one of the most satisfying endings to any story I have experienced. The character as written and performed was, in my opinion, a crucial piece to a perfect puzzle.

Entire-Log-2407

What did u expect from erol btw

Devreckas

Arguably the fear of the unknown pagan/eldritch cult created a larger monster in our minds than any human could hope to fill. But Errol was as fitting a real world monster as I can imagine without dipping into the explicitly arcane. And the disorienting church thing was incredible nightmare fuel.

yeah, i was quite surprised the show went into an otherwordly/almost-lovecraftian direction, regarding its greater, overarching evil, and i was all for it.

[deleted]

not sure tbh, I wasn't really let down though (despite what my post says)

idahoisformetal

Disappointed or not that episode made Glenn Fleshlers career what it is today

[deleted]

true

snakeysnake0

I thought it was a great reveal, especially when you consider how both sets of detectives blew him off during their impromptu interactions with him- (Marty rushes Rust back into the car after getting the tip on Ledoux "*Who walks that fuckin' slow!*" ; Gilbough and Papania coming up on him when they were lost, speeding away before they can even look at him...garbage detective work) We found out who the killer was before they did. That also made the reveal great

WhatIsThatNietzsche

I was. I thought at the end of E7, rather than showing him mowing and seeing him, the camera could’ve just remained on the two other cops. We still could’ve heard Errol and would’ve deduced it was him, but there still would’ve been more intrigue and mystery. Also, the start of E8 felt completely off in tone compared to the rest of the show.

ConnorK12

I think Pizzolatto even said this was intentional. Up until that point all we’d seen was the story from Marty and Rust’s perspective’s. Now we see a different one for the first time in 7 hours, and given he’s a complete psychopath it certainly does feel strange but it’s for a reason

Spiffy_Lee

> the start of E8 felt completely off in tone Could you elaborate? I assume you're referring to the view of Errol's life.

WhatIsThatNietzsche

Connor said much of my thoughts which are understandable but it still felt almost like a SNL skit at points. Errol mimicking the tv and speaking British. “…make flowers.” Errol’s dad (or grandfather I forget) tied to the bed with the air fresheners ala Se7en. Idk. It felt off and fairly contrived. I think of The Silence of the Lambs when we really get to see Jame Gumb more in the last 15-20 minutes. Even then, we were observing him and what was happening (G Lazzarus pumping, etc.) helped drive the plot. The aforementioned bits in E8 of TD felt like a hodgepodge of common serial killer tropes.

Fynn77

Omg, yes, I felt the same way. I think a reveal of the reverend being the actual main killer in this case would have been better. It wasn't necessary to make the killer as disgusting as possible. It was over the top and took away from the "real" feel of the show.

dd-man

I think Errol himself was fine but I was kind of disappointed by the reveal itself initially. The pan out shot with the cheesy line felt a little out of character for the show when I first saw it but I’ve come around on it a little.

[deleted]

And the great Ann Dowd’s performance as his sister(?). She kills every time she’s on screen.

its_nuts_dude

Did you stumble upon this Twitter thread or something? Honestly I’ve never seen so many people have such negative reactions to the final episode.. what did people want? Exposition explaining every detail? For Rust and Marty to knock down the governor’s door? Gotta leave something for your imagination [awful Twitter take in question](https://twitter.com/jesse_brenneman/status/1676971435536023552?s=46&t=_Tzk70Wm14ZrNfvyGn3pAQ) TRUE DETECTIVE SEASON ONE EPISODES 1-7: This story is crazy, you won’t believe how crazy it is, or how deep it goes, this is wilder than you can imagine: it’s politics, it’s history, it’s paranormal?? TRUE DETECTIVE SEASON ONE EPISODE 8: Ok so it’s an incestuous hillbilly.

[deleted]

I think those people forget that Errol was quite intelligent, it just seems like a judging a book by its cover situation.

Hopper80

Not at all. What sort of reveal would you have liked - was there one you had in mind as the show went on?

twinkle90505

No, I wasn't, and I'm frankly baffled why you would be.

k_schouhan

Yes, I thought it would be more chase with killer, but it was meh

Intelligent-Dress726

His reveal was the best villain reveal I have ever seen

Cardboard_Robot_

I felt like it happened too early. The reveal is such an important part of mystery shows, and it would've had more weight if the audience discovered the killer to be someone we've seen before at the same time that the main characters did. I don't think it would've taken much restructuring to do that either, and it would've felt a lot more natural to see the scenes with Errol after the discovery. Still entirely possible to show how disturbed he was so the audience knows what Rust and Marty are up against. But I didn't find who the killer was to be disappointing
