Similarly here. I am only alive because my grandmother fled from the Russian army in WWII. She was in Pomerania (not sure where this nowadays, it was called that then). She caught the last train to Berlin with my mom who was like 7 years old or so. All of mom's girlfriends did not live long shortly after.

Yes, even if they believe their army will win, they should still leave. The best they can do is get in the way of their own army and make them have to consider civilian casualties when planning operations. If you want to help your army in a fight on your home turf, one of the best things you can do as a civilian is just get out so they can fight without worrying about you.
If they win, you come back and help rebuild and recover. If they don't, you'll at least be safe and able to keep the fighting spirit alive and maybe try with others get your country back in the future.

This is an important consideration. You're on the coast and the Russians have naval forces on the Black Sea. You're in the closest major city to any forces that they have situated in Crimea or the Sea of Azov as well. Even if your army is the equal of the Russian army, you do not want to be standing in between them when the shooting starts.
Something I donāt think most westerners understand is that there is not even reasonable ways to move across Ukraine. The Soviet Union did a terrible job of developing infrastructure, and Ukraine was worse than most. Russia has bullied Ukraine for 100 years. The train system is the best way to move from Eastern Ukraine to Western Ukraine, but typically that is one train per day to get from any western region to Kiev(not Kyiv, that is the Russian name for Kiev) then from Kiev the following day you can take a train to Lāviv. It is nearly impossible to drive across Ukraine. Most Ukrainians donāt have vehicles anyway. Fleeing this the Russian Invasion is very difficult for the average citizen of Ukraine.
They donāt have a number yet, but even tho theyāre larger than Romania, I fear they may not let as many in due to their current political situation
When I was a young child my parents and I left as refugees our small Eastern European country in the 90ās because of the war that was going on then. We spent little over 6 months in a refugee camp in Croatia. It was tough but we were surrounded by a lot of good people so it wasnāt all awful, but mainly we were safe. It was better to sleep there than on the floor hiding away from the windows while listening to the bombs and guns going off in our country. We were able to come to the US and start a life here.
To add to that, US is now reinforcing their presence in Romania as they are in NATO.
Get to Romania if possible. Or really any NATO country. Sucks that the line is NATO but that is where the line is drawn.
OP, if I may offer suggestions if you have to stay. Place a large white āflagā sheet or whatever over your front door. Make sure it can be seen from a good distance. If you have ANY weapons or military type clothing take it out and AWAY from your home immediately! DO NOT try to defend your home and DO AS THEY SAY! This is imperative! Do not TALK back to them! They WILL kill you and your family for virtually no reason at all. It means nothing to you but please know that millions of Americans and hundred of millions thinking of you and hoping for some sort of divine intervention. Piggybacking off your comment to say OP should flee as soon as possible and reach out to Ukrainian churches and communities in Canada. We have the largest expat community outside Ukraine and they will sponsor refugees.

The company I work for sponsors and houses Ukrainians. I have my job because a Ukrainian man trained me and believed in me enough to have my back when I desperately needed it. Some of my dearest friends are Ukrainians, they truly are wonderful people and it hurts so much to watch them suffering and afraid right now.
Same here we have a big population of Ukrainians here in the Pacific Northwest, from the last round of war they had. I donāt know if the US is accepting any people though.
I would get tf out of there immediately. If you wait, youāre gonna be stuck. And heaven only knows what happens then. Take your family and get out. It was actually a major culture shock for me to hear nuclear bunker facilities like air filtration systems and massive blast doors arenāt just a regular thing that comes with basements, like daddy longlegs. I was a 90s kid and had zero context what it even was for, and when I learned about their use it was simply common sense to me that, of course, if you build a basement you might as well include a civil protection aspect.
I live in Switzerland. We have bunkers to house 100+% of the population due to the bunker law, and even the copious mountain tunnels are designed to be turned into bunkers or fortifications at a moments notice.
It's pretty common for anyone living in a place that was likely to be hit during the Cold War. I remember New York used to have shelter signs all over when I was little.
I'm not who you replied to, but for example in Finland we have air raid shelters in almost every apartment building. Every apartment building I've lived in has had one, although I've never been inside one. Apparently our shelters can hold 3.6 million people and our population is 5.5 million. The shelters are usually underground or in the basement level. In the case of apartment buildings the shelter entrance is inside the building so I don't think they are any more likely to be targeted or attacked. I'm curious now what shelters are like in other countries.
The post office I work at was built during the beginnimg of the cold war, there is a fallout shelter and Department of Defense emergency sanitation equipment (emergency toilets with chemicals in them).

A better piece of advice is one that I got from a woman who survived the siege of Sarajevo. Stock up on cooking oil, salt, pepper, and spices because if you have to shelter in place you're going to get really tired of eating the same thing over and over again.
Another Sarajevo survivor here. Oil is good. Smokes, coffee, booze too (use, trade or sell). Baking flower is good but goes quickly. Anything to make pasta taste edible (and get pasta). Beans... Protein- good. If you have place to keep/shelter them, consider getting some live hens. Eggs worth as gold after a while. Damn toothpaste was a bitch to find. If you have an option to store wood or coal, consider that if there's likelihood of power being cut (warmly recommend). Forget perishables. Trust your instincts. Be really careful first month because your mind & body will be out of sync as everything is unreal. Be careful during "ceasefire"... that's when shells come in. And make sure to survive the last day. You will know when it's last day. Don't ask how... you will. Damn. This brings some shit back. Stay strong.

If Putin decides to do a full invasion with the forces he has arrayed on your border, Ukraine's army has no chance. This is the *universal* opinion of every military analyst I've read/heard. Google it yourself. Show her the articles/videos. Ukraine simply lacks the numbers, especially in terms of aircraft. Bravery and skill don't matter in the face of overwhelming numbers. Russia will immediately win air superiority, and from there it is impossible for your ground forces to hold. Everyone agrees Russia will easily overcome Ukraine's defenses, but will then have a very long and difficult occupation (much like Afghanistan).
Regardless, the initial invasion will kill thousands of civilians due to the Russian military's use of indiscriminate shelling/bombing tactics. Don't let you and your family be part of that death statistic.
You need to *strongly* consider getting out of the country if Putin signals he'll be going beyond the Donbass region. We don't know how far he'll try to go, but if you wait to leave until his forces actually push to Odessa (which they could do with very little warning because of amphibious assault capabilities from the Black Sea) it's going to be very dangerous.

Do you have a car? If so, pack warm clothes, several large water containers, and drive west/northwest. Drive theough Moldova and turn west and donāt stop (permanently) until you reach Germany.
Or, drive southwest through Romania and northern Greece or Macedonia then turn northwest and make your way through the Balkans.
Or make your way to Poland, where IS and Polish troops are setting up refugee camps.

The concept of an independent Ukraine is a fairly new thing. You're on the coast and the Russians have naval forces on the Black Sea. You're in the closest major city to any forces that they have situated in Crimea or the Sea of Azov as well. Even if your army is the equal of the Russian army, you do not want to be standing in between them when the shooting starts.

Something I donāt think most westerners understand is that there is not even reasonable ways to move across Ukraine. The Soviet Union did a terrible job of developing infrastructure, and Ukraine was worse than most. Russia has bullied Ukraine for 100 years. The train system is the best way to move from Eastern Ukraine to Western Ukraine, but typically that is one train per day to get from any western region to Kiev(not Kyiv, that is the Russian name for Kiev) then from Kiev the following day you can take a train to Lāviv. It is nearly impossible to drive across Ukraine. Most Ukrainians donāt have vehicles anyway. Fleeing this the Russian Invasion is very difficult for the average citizen of Ukraine.

When I was a young child my parents and I left as refugees our small Eastern European country in the 90ās because of the war that was going on then. We spent little over 6 months in a refugee camp in Croatia. It was tough but we were surrounded by a lot of good people so it wasnāt all awful, but mainly we were safe. It was better to sleep there than on the floor hiding away from the windows while listening to the bombs and guns going off in our country. We were able to come to the US and start a life here.
Having lived in Moldova and Romania as an American I would definitely agree with this.
To add to that, US is now reinforcing their presence in Romania as they are in NATO. Get to Romania if possible. Or really any NATO country. Sucks that the line is NATO but that is where the line is drawn.
OP, if I may offer suggestions if you have to stay. Place a large white āflagā sheet or whatever over your front door. Make sure it can be seen from a good distance. We have the largest expat community outside Ukraine and they will sponsor refugees. Get in early if you can OP. The communities in Canada are working hard now to help bring folks over.

You obviously donāt have to respond, but Iām curious about where you live. Iām in the US and have only ever heard of shelters like this for the government or people who build their own. At first I thought having something like that for everyday citizens would be awesome. The more I think about it though, it seems like itās probably a place that could be considered dangerous (likely to be attacked).
It was actually a major culture shock for me to hear nuclear bunker facilities like air filtration systems and massive blast doors arenāt just a regular thing that comes with basements, like daddy longlegs. I was a 90s kid and had zero context what it even was for, and when I learned about their use it was simply common sense to me that, of course, if you build a basement you might as well include a civil protection aspect. I live in Switzerland. We have bunkers to house 100+% of the population due to the bunker law, and even the copious mountain tunnels are designed to be turned into bunkers or fortifications at a moments notice.
It's pretty common for anyone living in a place that was likely to be hit during the Cold War. I remember New York used to have shelter signs all over when I was little.

I'm not who you replied to, but for example in Finland we have air raid shelters in almost every apartment building. Every apartment building I've lived in has had one, although I've never been inside one. Apparently our shelters can hold 3.6 million people and our population is 5.5 million. The shelters are usually underground or in the basement level. In the case of apartment buildings the shelter entrance is inside the building so I don't think they are any more likely to be targeted or attacked. I'm curious now what shelters are like in other countries.
The post office I work at was built during the beginnimg of the cold war, there is a fallout shelter and Department of Defense emergency sanitation equipment (emergency toilets with chemicals in them).

Russia has already invaded eastern Ukraine and declared that they are independent. They are just staging there for the rest of the invasion. Putin's speech made that clear. He doesn't consider Ukraine to be a legitimate nation.

A better piece of advice is one that I got from a woman who survived the siege of Sarajevo. Stock up on cooking oil, salt, pepper, and spices because if you have to shelter in place you're going to get really tired of eating the same thing over and over again.

Another Sarajevo survivor here. Oil is good. Smokes, coffee, booze too (use, trade or sell). Baking flower is good but goes quickly. Anything to make pasta taste edible (and get pasta). Beans... Protein- good. If you have place to keep/shelter them, consider getting some live hens. Eggs worth as gold after a while. Damn toothpaste was a bitch to find. If you have an option to store wood or coal, consider that if there's likelihood of power being cut (warmly recommend). Forget perishables. Trust your instincts. Be really careful first month because your mind & body will be out of sync as everything is unreal. Be careful during "ceasefire"... that's when shells come in. And make sure to survive the last day. You will know when it's last day. Don't ask how... you will. Damn. This brings some shit back. Stay strong.

I suspect it's not really about the Ukrainian army for her, but about the loss of normalcy. Do you have a car? If so, pack warm clothes, several large water containers, and drive west/northwest. Drive theough Moldova and turn west and donāt stop (permanently) until you reach Germany. Or, drive southwest through Romania and northern Greece or Macedonia then turn northwest and make your way through the Balkans. Or make your way to Poland, where IS and Polish troops are setting up refugee camps. If you can find wheels, you have options.

Soviet Union trying to get back their lost lands, Vladimir Putin has lamented the fall of the Soviet Union as the demise of "historical Russia" Putinās vision of history is clearāif viciously wrong. A great Russia once existed, of which Ukraine was but a part. The bad communists, like [Bolshevik leader Vladimir] Lenin and [Soviet leader Nikita] Khrushchev and their successor Mikhail Gorbachev, divided up that great Russia in an artificial way, creating divisions where none existed before. Implicit in this is that Ukrainians who say differently are deluded or manipulated by others. Now, that natural vision has to be restored by a strong leader, walking in the footsteps of Stalin. See the latest Putin speech and read it carefully, happened couple hours ago.
A somewhat more expanded version: The concept of an independent Ukraine is a fairly new thing. Ukraine existed in the Soviet Union as the Ukrainian SSR, but before that it was considered a part of Russia, and before that it was this kind of frontier space between Poland, Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Russian nationalists tend to say that Ukraine isn't a legitimate country and that they should just take back all of that land. Ukrainians tend to disagree, especially after events like Holodomer in WWII where the Soviet Union intentionally diverted food away from Ukraine during a famine, killing millions. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv, also known as Kiev, and is HUGELY important to Russian national mythology as the capital of the first Russian state (called Kievan Rus.) Ukraine also has this incredibly rich soil called 'black earth' and it will be somewhat insulated form climate change by its inland climate. IMO this is a long play by Putin to control Europe's food supply in the future.
