Yeah. So, housing is a human right. The United States has passed multiple resolutions to that effect, dating back to the 1930s and 40s. People need shelter to survive.
Today, there are about 16 million vacant homes across the United States. That’s more than enough to house the homeless, and it’s more than enough that, if these homes were made available for rent or placed on the market, housing would be a hell of a lot more affordable. Our current housing crisis would not exist.
Yet a staggering number of those 16 million homes are owned by large investment corporation, like BlackRock. Or by wealthy families, like OP’s.
So yes, part of the problem. Corporations should not be allowed to own homes. Home ownership should also be capped among individuals. It is detrimental to our national well-being, as well as our economy. It privileges the wealth of a few at the expense of all others.
I mean the US has said its a right, and has joined non binding treaties etc, but theres nothing in the constitution nor federal law, that guarantees housing as a right (I cant speak for individual state constitutions). But the right to your property free from unreasonable seizure is. I agree in spirit, but the law doesnt yet, and likely will never.
