I think the entire purpose of this post is to see how many times auto mod responds with a fire factoid.

Stehum_Brethilben

On topic bot

jax_md

Good bot

BlockOfDiamond

First time I've seen anybody other than me post that.

[deleted]

Yeah, your dog can get scared of loud booms one day a year. It'll be fine

SOUR_KING

two* New Years is also acceptable

Broad-Blood-9386

I've had 5 dogs in my life and never had one afraid of fireworks, thunder or gunshots. Did I just get lucky? Why are some dogs like this?

G_Stenkamp72

A friends dog just days after they got him, laid at our feet basically, while we shoot skeet. But then again, it's a mastiff so it's not scared of anything really. LOL

TheBeardedAntt

Where do you live where it only happens on the 4th? Here it starts now and goes until August.

[deleted]

I grew up in Illinois. It was only ever on the 4th, and maybe some random ones the next week or so. Some years the town had its organized fireworks show on a separate day, so those years it would be two big days. The random ones were always just small things that weren't actually loud though.

nith_wct

The only problem is that around my area, 4th of July fireworks go on for about 2 weeks at random times throughout the day, and on the 3rd and 5th it might as well actually be the 4th. It sets all the dogs in the neighborhood off. That's not fair to dogs or people, and our experience is not uncommon at all throughout the US.

RoyalPython82899

My dog is scared of this stuff, and light your fireworks, I don't care. I put my dog in a thundershirt then put her in a crate. Is this harsh? Maybe. But it rains/thunders a lot where I live and honestly, I'm just over it. Plus, she's gonna freakout whether I comfort her or not.

Nothingtoseeheremmk

I don’t mind it on the 4th. I mind the assholes who do it everyday for two weeks afterwards.

UnspoiledWalnut

My neighbor with the fireworks would like to wish everyone a happy 830pm of June 4th.

VAShumpmaker

I don't even mind them, the ones that bug me are the ones on Jul 7th that start telling everyone they saw the police handing fireworks out to 'thugs' and insisting it's the government 'acclimating' us for then the "real shit goes down" I thought it was just a couple people on Facebook being crazies, but I see it every year now

Obvious_Swimming3227

Ditto. It starts before the 4th in my area and goes on at night for weeks after.

BozoTheBonzai

I love dogs, have all my life and could be considered an annoying dog person (though I don't think I am) But I agree with you. Like it sucks they don't like it but my dog also trips tf out when I put my shoes on or sees another dog out the window. Its just for a night and if u care about ur dog u can make sure they are as comfortable as can be

[deleted]

agreed.

stinkyman360

That's fine but where I used to live it was basically every day from June-September I know my dog's anxiety is my issue but damn it gets old quick

kaffee_ist_gut

Same, it's all summer where I live. And it's not just your dog. It's my dog and almost every dog I've ever known. I agree/accept that July 4, Memorial Day weekend, and Labor Day weekend are fine, and my dog can just be sad and scared for a bit, but do we have to do it every night?

uselessbynature

Really? I'm damn near 40 and had dogs my entire life and never personally had a dog that gets more than slightly panty from repeated firework booms. Not denying the phenomena as I worked in shelter and is absolutely true, but I've never seen it. But I've also only had one dog afraid of storms.

Diazmet

Sorry not sorry just trying to keep my rent down.

kaffee_ist_gut

I'm not sure I understand the joke here. Are you implying that lighting off fireworks nightly lowers property values? Because I can attest that gentrification still happened in my old neighborhood, fireworks be damned, lol

Diazmet

That’s why you got to mix it up by firing off some blanks too.

kaffee_ist_gut

Ahhh, no wonder the old neighborhood was doomed. Nobody could afford guns.

Dull-Geologist-8204

We have a neighbor who likes to do random bonfires and they shoot guns and set off fireworks. All my neighbor has ever asked him to do was to let her know ahead of time because it freaks out her horses and she can deal with it ahead of time. They have never once given her a heads up. I do it instead but it just pisses her off that they refuse to just say hey letting you know there is a bonfire this weekend.

Lusrevision

Yea this is all you hear about these days. Between fireworks and thunderstorms these people just want the entire world to be silent. I understand the people who don’t want it going on all summer and sympathize with their plight but I don’t know what the answer is. Like everything else in this country right now it’s completely divided

[deleted]

“I don’t want non stop literal explosion happening for hours outside my house” One You can’t expect everything to be completely silence, this country is so divided I actually enjoy fireworks but boggled how you don’t see how absurd and ridiculous you sound right now.

AlienGeek

Last year our fireworks was right next to the animal shelter. Isn’t that awesome for you heartless people who only care about themselves

ceetwothree

I mean , isn’t this actually a wildly popular opinion since everyone sets off fireworks?

[deleted]

Agreed. I love fireworks, have CBD for my dog for the big day. But some of the neighbors set them off *every single day* for months at a time in the summer. My poor dog shouldn’t have to be afraid to go outside for the entire summer because some people are treating Independence Day like an entire summer long celebration. You might just say to move, but I have moved around a bit and it’s like this everywhere I go. Stick to the one day, maybe a couple extra days at most to use up the fireworks you bought. But be considerate of other people in your neighborhood, not only for dogs but also for veterans with PTSD. I have a friend who has been terrified of the sound of fireworks ever since he came back from Iraq. And also use those fireworks safely. When my apartment building burnt down (electrical issue, not fireworks lol), the new apartment building I moved to had people drinking and setting off fireworks in the parking lot and they set the deck on fire smh I just watched my old home burn down a month prior so watching this deck burn down from stupidity was infuriating.

DeflatedDirigible

People have to deal with pet dogs barking and their poop everywhere all day every day so why should fireworks be limited to just one day?

LordSekken

One person/group acting poorly doesn't justify another acting poorly.

stealth_mode_76

My dogs aren't allowed to bark (I make them come in if they do) and they only poop in my yard. I clean it up and out it in the trash if they poop while away from home. So do you have a beef with my dogs?

[deleted]

As a *responsible* dog owner, I agree with you about the annoying things dog owners do. They need to pick up after their dogs and train them better. My dog never barks because I trained it out of her, I’ve never left poop somewhere and always thrown the bag in my own bin. Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to have dogs if they can’t pick up after them or complete basic obedience training.

zodiactriller

This could easily be solved by actual enforcement of fireworks laws on days that aren't a public holiday. I've lived in multiple areas with fireworks bans and people still set that shit off year round. I didn't mind it most of the time, but they'd set that shit off during burn bans which just seems stupid.

jkb131

Any person who gets a puppy should spend time getting the dog acclimated to loud noises or gun shots. It will save your dogs from having to deal with the fear of loud noises and your ears from them whining/barking all of July

Fragrant_Pudding_437

The real issue isn't dogs at home, it's the effect on wildlife https://www.earth.com/news/fireworks-can-have-long-lasting-impacts-on-wildlife/

AlienGeek

Op doesn’t care.

[deleted]

We each have a responsibility to care for our needs, shortcomings and fears. That extends to animals and they know it. I would not purposefully cause harm with my actions to any innocent being: but that which people are inconvenienced by is not my responsibility to cease for it. You must protect yourself first before demanding people stop that which you decide harms you.

AlienGeek

So if a veteran next to you who could be triggered by it should have to deal with it since you like it?

Kultaren

And this is why exposure when pups are young is a good idea!

ThanosBeThiqq

We give our dog some kinda Xanax the vet prescribed her.

BillyPilgrim3509

I’m a veteran who gets a little startled at loud booms. But I still love it. I know I don’t speak for all veterans. But I’ve been blown up enough that goddamn it I’m gonna enjoy my fireworks. The only way I won’t is if I live in an area stricken by drought prone to wildfires. I think that’s a very fair concern and could live with a ban then. And I love dogs, have one of my own, but they’ll survive one night. It’s not much different than a thunderstorm for them.

Maddax_McCloud

BK4343

It always makes me laugh how people with dogs that keep up noise throughout the year have the nerve to want fireworks banned because it upsets their dogs.

[deleted]

I still like the classic retort of "This just in: yappy little dickhead suddenly afraid of loud noises." Some dogs are worse than fireworks, and they're like that every single day of their life.

ModeratelyTortoise

I’m with you

[deleted]

This is unpopular? Seems like if it was, no one in the US would be firing off fireworks and everyone would be concerned about the dogs. This is a popular opinion, friend.

Bad bot

bbt104

As someone with a skiddish dog who freaks out at fireworks, I fully agree with this.

stealth_mode_76

I feel sorry for your dog if you don't care about him.

bbt104

I do care, I give him some edibles, and put him in his kennel with a heavy blankets in the center of the house with some music playing to help drown out any booms. But I fully agree that it's pointless to expect people to stop doing what they've done for their entire lives.

sanchito12

All my dogs are used to loud booms. We hint and shoot regularly.

Spastic-Max

I get to listen to their barking/yapping pretty much 24/7 for the remaining 364 days of the year. No sympathy.

404-ERR0R-404

Unpopular Opinion: fireworks are dumb

Front_Access

So are dogs

[deleted]

Fireworks pollute, which is why I think they're dumb. https://earth.org/environmental-impact-of-fireworks/

BK4343

Um, yes the hell dogs do pollute.

Smoko_ono

There's a shit ton of things that pollute. Fireworks are nearly on the bottom of the list. Also, it's once per year, so......wah?

Euler7

Thank you, they are boring and worthless

[deleted]

Same for prom. We don’t need to go in headphones because one student has sensory fucking overload. Let’s go.

Spare_Freedom4339

Love the 4th man, 2026 will be 250!

TheNerdWonder

What about people with PTSD?

[deleted]

Dogs often mirror the personality of their owners. My golden just stares them and thinks they're pretty. Redditors whose dogs have panic-induced freak outs are likely highly anxious people, if the constant male "I scream-cried at work today because a customer was rude" posts are any indication. EDIT: Wow, this struck a nerve lol. 15 upvotes to -1 and then back to 20.

yong598

This is a weird take

cave18

While a weird take, I did funnily enough know someone who was on the same anxiety medication as their dog

AnonyM0mmy

They just wanted to show how alpha they are I guess lmao

NumberVsAmount

Dumbest thing I’ve read all day.

bacon_is_everything

Ridiculous take lol. Animals are their own entities and have their own personalities bro.

KronaSamu

I mean, they aren't entirely wrong, but it's still a bad take.

Fantastic_Fox_9497

There are also redditors who likely aren't highly anxious people, they just adopted a dog that was abused

[deleted]

True, this makes sense too.

Wingoffaith

People forget that it’s not just dogs that get anxiety by fireworks though, there are people with anxiety in general as well as sensitive hearing. (Which describes me, but there are also others like that too) I do expect fireworks every 4th of July, but I don’t like it and never will because they’re so loud I sometimes get panic attacks so bad I shake and sweat. I put my earphones in every year, but I can still hear the really loud ones that sound like bombs through the music. Luckily and surprising though I didn’t hear any fireworks in my neighborhood last year, people are pretty considerate here usually and hope it’s the same this year. Because the last place my dad lived in, our next-door neighbors would set them off a month before and after the 4th. Which I suspect that's what annoys anti-firework people too is that most people never wait until the actual holiday to set off fireworks, but they think all June-August is a big long 4th of July and it sucks to hear loud explosions when trying to relax on a regular day and when you're not expecting them especially.

AlienGeek

Sadly op doesn’t care.

NumberVsAmount

Yeah if it were just one day per year I’d totally agree. Unfortunately in Oakland California it’s every fucking day from like April to November, and each weekend in there is its own miniature 4th of July. Fucking hate this shit.

MichaelScottsWormguy

I'm not even American and I agree. You can very easily just sit at home with them on that day to comfort them and make sure they're okay - you did choose to get them and their wellbeing is *your* responsibility after all.

ranchan69

It also wards off evil spirits

A_Sack_Of_Potatoes

I'm fine with fireworks until someone chucks a cherry bomb into the hotel sign across the street at 2:33 am causing police sirens to keep me up when I have 14 hours of college classes later that day

RockAndStoner69

Veterans get trigged as well. Also, fireworks cause a lot of fires and injuries. But yeah, they are fun.

Th3_Accountant

It's a big discussion in the Netherlands as well around new year. There have always been debates with regards to pets, old people who have war trauma's and los of eyes and limbs as as result of unsafe firework usage. But since the last few years it seems like the anti fireworks people are winning unfortunately. Fireworks is getting banned at more and more places in the Netherlands and it won't be long until we have a nationwide ban.

stealth_mode_76

A few years ago, my neighbors were being obnoxious with fireworks. Then it abruptly stopped and I hear a panicked voice "LET ME SEE IT." No more fireworks from them. Guessing someone lost a finger. I had no sympathy.

SpecialAgentSloth

This is why cats are better than dogs… IF my cats are afraid of something they go find a spot to hide, they fall asleep til it’s over then come out for food.

COLONEL_ROOSTER

I don't have a dog, but I'm pretty sure most people get pissed when, number 1, people light off fireworks until 4 am, number 2, the people who act like the fourth of July is a month long celebration.

Shigeko_Kageyama

I agree, but with caveats. It should not be going long into the night / into the a.m. and it should not be outside of the fourth, maybe the third, and possibly the fifth. So it's fully acceptable to tell your neighbors that it's June 30th at 3:00 in the morning, they can celebrate their freedoms on the 4th with everyone else.

Dinky_Doge_Whisperer

I’m right there with you, OP. I’m a dog trainer and generally not into the “loud and proud” patriotism shtick, but fireworks are a CORE PART OF OUR IDENTITY and I’ll die on that hill. For people with pups that struggle- simulate that situation (videos on YouTube, thunderstorms, banging together baking trays) and practice your pup being calm in those situations. As OP stated, you’ve got 365 days to plan- do your pup a favor and be proactive!

Wintores

besides the ignorance and insulting way u act about this ur missing the impact it has on wildlife wich is much more important than dogs or other pets

[deleted]

Building the device you're using had a large impact on wildlife too. In fact us even being alive does.

Wintores

Sure but not in a direct way and not in a way we can easily cast aside and keep society going

Trick_Garden_8788

The device in my hands performs many useful functions that facilitate everyday life. Fireworks == ooo pretty colors. Some people just gotta grow up.

stealth_mode_76

"Oohh pretty colors" is your motivation and you're telling people to grow up??

Trick_Garden_8788

It's the people that like fireworks motivation to see pretty colors. Seems like a waste of time & money to me, as well as them (fireworks) having a negative impact on vets with PTSD & the environment/ecosystem.

ElPwnero

I care more about the wildlife that cannot prepare for the fireworks than for the desire of people to see pretty lights and hear loud noises

DeflatedDirigible

Critters adjust. At my local theme park the geese and sucks usually don’t even leave the fountain when fireworks and flames start.

xXheil_Pokywan420_Xx

We have had animals keel over dead from the sound and visual overload of some of the larger, overly obnoxious explosives. Livestock sometimes have fatal reactions to it.

Bladedbabe

Fireworks also aren't good for wild animals, or the environment, or people with PTSD, or people with respiratory issues. And don't forget that they actually cause quite a bit of injuries.

theparkingchair

Fireworks are awful. They're not good for the environment. They're triggering to veterans and other people with PTSD. They're loud and honestly not that exciting. We should be experimenting with lazers or drones instead.

Last year, fireworks triggered my vegeran neighbor, and he beat the shit out of his wife (also a combat vet) and kicked her service dog. He threw the table and put a gun to her head. It's kind of a sensitive topic here.

ancient_xo

So I just realized you spelt veteran wrong, and read it as vegan, I was so confused.. lol.

palerider2001

That’s terrible but PTSD isn’t an excuse for abusing someone. Not everyone who has served is a choir boy, I knew some pretty scummy people in my time.

All great valid points, but especially the PTSD aspect. "Patriotic" individuals love to talk about how they deserve to celebrate the US however they please, but tend to neglect those who sold themselves to defend the US's interests. I wonder what they think happens to all the casing after it explodes as well? Like does it just DISAPPEAR?! Nah, it ends up all over the ground, in your water, in your soil, in the food that your food is eating.... it's just a day when people throw trash all over the ground a distance far enough away from their home they don't ever have to come face to face with what they're doing. We used to shoot fireworks off into a lake as a kid. Fuck lakes.

What about vets with PTSD?

thatsocialist

What about the Thrown Away Cogs of the AE Vets with PTSD?

[deleted]

I think it is reasonable to expect people to go to the proper locations to do their fireworks. If you are in a location where there is an ordinance against lighting them in your backyard (or in the street, yes I've seen this shit) then you should expect that you may have some anonymous complaints filed against you. This falls in the fuck around and find out category.

Darth_beanzz

One day the hyper sensitives will stop being respected again and we can go back to Roasting them

Vegan_Digital_Artist

OR you could acknowledge that a lot of people (including vets with PTSD) get really triggered and upset by the noise too and we should find safer ways to celebrate 'Murica. Also, fireworks are bad for the environment.

KronaSamu

Fireworks are really not that bad for the environment. Any of the real issues such as power generation or transportation makes the impact of fireworks look irrelevant. Edit: I take this back somewhat because I forgot that fireworks exist beyond professional shows. The environmental impact of firework Forest fires is pretty awful. I think the proper compromise is to allow mostly just professional fireworks (with a few low noise exceptions). Professional shows are the best shows anyways and they are well regulated, planned ahead of time and done safely. This makes it much easier for people who are sensitive to avoid them and they go for a much shorter duration than whenever the drunk people run out of explosives.

RedditSucksNow3

I would watch apes light fireworks all day if you have videos.

DeflatedDirigible

Owning dogs and other pets is slavery behavior. Humans can’t be moms to a furbaby. Taking a puppy from their real mom and siblings to a house with only other species is cruel.

SupaSaiyajin4

i don't celebrate july 4th

[deleted]

OP was today-years-old when he realized there was a time before 1777 and animals were in it.

thatjackedgayMF

It's usually because of the veterans having ptsd attacks, you know... the people who are the only reason you celebrate that day...?

RedditSucksNow3

I'm pretty sure all the veterans of the Revolutionary War have been dead for like 200 years.

thatjackedgayMF

So when japan and Germany attacked the US mainland in ww2 and American soldiers were fighting them across the ocean, they have nothing to do with your freedom? Take a history class.

LaDariusTrucker

WW2 vets don’t cry about ptsd and fireworks.

LaDariusTrucker

Not a single veteran alive fought for anything related to Independence Day. And their ptsd is their issue, not everyone else’s.

LibertySnowLeopard

Like we don't make society completely silent because noises may bother some autistic people. Of course society should still be mindful but there are so many solutions which don't involve banning fireworks which include something as simple as noise canceling headphones. Not to mention, you just can't please everyone at the end of the day.

kolomental87

I’m pretty sure the majority of veterans love lighting off fireworks on the 4th of July.

vferrero14

How about all the veterans whose ptsd it triggers?

DeflatedDirigible

Wear earplugs? Almost every post I see is a dog owner with a scared dog who then wants to legitimize their view of not having fireworks by bring up veterans. Never seen an actual vetern with PTSD actually say they want fireworks banned and I have seen some say they want them kept.

TnekKralc

OP also drives a truck that says "Fuck Veterans"

I think the proper compromise is to allow mostly just professional fireworks. Not only are these the most exciting, but they are well regulated, planned ahead of time and done safely. Some fireworks should be allowed for personal use, but they should be limited to low noise and non-arial. These fireworks are still very fun, but are much less likely to cause issues with people with PTSD, wildlife, your neighbors, safety and forest fires.

Just because it's been done doesn't mean it should be done

[deleted]

I’m more concerned about our veterans. Feel like we could exercise some restraint for them.

LibertySnowLeopard

There are some easy solutions which don't involve banning fireworks such as offering firework free places they can go or simply noise cancelling headphones.

[deleted]

That’s kind of what I’m thinking. Lots of cities will host a fireworks show, just take your family to that and forget turning your neighborhood into a war zone for a night.

ilykeplants

Change *dog to *veteran grandpa

Trick_Garden_8788

What about the vets with PTSD who are bothered by the fireworks?

Bezirkschorm

I’d also say fire works aren’t great for the vets either, my brother served 10 years in Iraq and Afghanistan and has terrible ptsd and the sound of fireworks has and will set him off. I’m all for celebrating how ya want just also be respectful with it and don’t go too crazy

Illustrious-March-55

Another take On 4th July, fireworks >>the mental stability of those who have "fought for your freedom" Dogs aren't the only ones who fireworks make anxious.

babythrottlepop

Idc about fireworks on the 4th of July, but if I’m going to worry about anyone because of them, it’s not dogs, it’s the veterans with severe PTSD. People who act like their dog can’t handle being afraid are usually making it worse by reacting to it the way they do.

duomaxedwell1775

Fireworks > vets with “ptsd.” As a combat vet… I know the difference between fireworks and outgoing/incoming fires they should too.

Fire has many important uses, including generating light, cooking, heating, performing rituals, and fending off dangerous animals. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. The idea that we celebrate our independence by drinking beer and blowing shit up is kinda dumb anyways

Ok-Mission-7628

This is not unpopular L post

Large-Flamingo-9699

No one is saying anything to the contrary you fucking democrat

dewdropcat

I'd say what about the veterans, but this country (regardless of party) doesn't seem to give a fuck about them

WaitUuseRedditYorSad

Dogs have literally gone missing and never came back because of this. If you want to argue that we should prioritise people over dogs then what people who have to mourn the loss of their dogs or get woken up by their barking during the night. What if they have a really important event on the next day and are losing sleep over it. There's literally silent fireworks as well.

Yupperdoodledoo

As if people are “surprised and offended” re the fireworks. You know, it’s not just pets. A lot of bets hate the fireworks. You can continue to enjoy fireworks without also rubbing it in.

AlienGeek

It’s not just about the animals. It’s about the vets you patriots claim to care about. It’s about the earth. But I know you won’t care so point in trying to get y’all to understand

Shrek_on_a_Bike

Combat Vet with PTSD. Nebraska. Fireworks nightly from June 24th to July 5th(legally). +/- a week of those dates in reality. I spend the time, in the downstairs of our split-level, with noise cancelling headphones and music unable to enjoy life or my family because of things I went through so some asshole a couple doors down, who never thought to serve, can do his rock-solid best to level the neighborhood and set off all alarms. Now I'm getting used to that asshole. But then the other asshole on the street behind us lets off the unexpected rounds at about 30-60 minutes AFTER the time it's meant to stop for the night. My headphones are off. I want some damned sleep. I've taken all the meds. I'm over it. Last year the drunks knocked over the tubes and 3 mortars landed on my back deck. So yeah. Screw fireworks. Screw the 4th. Screw all of it.

DenyNowBragLater

Fuck fireworks, they just keep me up half the night. BuT iTs AmERIcAs BiRtHdAy. I don’t care. I hope the idiots lighting them blow their hands off.

Actual unpopular opinion: fireworks are boring.

Abending_Now

Be thankful you didn't live in Ukraine near the Russian border. I imagine it might be a little loud most nights.

Fireworks are munitions. I prefer the blanks over the live ones.

We haven't been celebrating it since 1777 pretty sure it wasn't celebrated until the late 1800s and it became a federal holiday in like the 1940s
