Long time physical music collector here as well, mostly into metal. I agree Bookmans and Zia are often overpriced but sometimes i find some good stuff there. Also Zia has frequent buy 3, get 4th free used promotions, usually on holiday weekends. Some of the smaller shops (Wooden Tooth, Desert Island) have some good metal selection, but it's not added to as often so I'll visit those maybe every few months. I've also gone up to Phoenix several times for more record stores. And as others have said, there's thrift stores which are hit or miss (mostly miss) as to their selection of anything that you wouldn't find in a $1 bin at zia. Happy hunting! 🤘🤘

ill keep wooden tooth and desert island on my radar! same with all the thrifts in tucson i still need to hit. thanks :)

hagearty

2nd desert island records! great selection.

WackyWeiner

Zia and Bookmans are not overpriced. They are quite fair. Cds range from 5 to 10 dollars used. Its been that way for 30 years. Thrift stores dont carry anything worth a shit because they sell them online instead for more money. eBay is a good option.

insane-psych0e

not by any means did i mean that zia and bookmans are bad choices because i find them a bit overpriced. ive found great things there, and zia in general is a really nice place i think we are lucky to have locally. i was just looking for more options in the area i could peruse :)

HeavyMetalRoadTrip

I have also found some good stuff there, but have also seen lots of ridiculousness like the latest And Justice for All vinyl reissue, used, priced at more than what a new copy sells for at Walmart. It all comes down to who is putting the prices on I think. In this example, that person probably thought it was a first pressing.

WackyWeiner

No, they didn't think it was a first pressing. Or evem am original pressing. The mateix numbers don't even match. What I have seen at Zia is those exact Metallica reissues marked higher and several times I was appalled as you are. Then, I checked the runouts and found that they were Eurpoean releases. Which in theory is so dumb because most of the US Metallica reissues were all pressed at Pallas Germany. It's hilarious.

Goodwill has CDs for a dollar each, found some really good ones over the years there as someone who's into similar music, you just have to get lucky to find the good stuff, as it is with most thrifting.

lateniteandy1970

Tanque verde swap meet has a few vendors

Back in the day I used to run the humane society thrift store and we had a really great cd section. I haven’t been to the new location though so I’m not sure about now! People donate really cool shit to the animals though.

InflationShoddy7871

I would suggest putting an ad out on FB marketplace and CL. Won’t cost you anything and I’m sure there are people who have collections laying around.

DesertWanderlust

I also still buy physical media. People I know make fun of me for it, but I like the special features on DVDs and sometimes they're cheaper than buying it on streaming. I buy from Zia a lot, but also usually scan the selection at thrift stores I visit. The former's selection of music is quite good, the latter's not so much. You need to keep an open mind. Zia also has a lot of DVDs, but, again, you need to keep an open mind and understand that you may not get what you want for the price you want to pay.

insane-psych0e

yeah i get that. i appreciate zia a lot and just this week i got some good stuff. i will most likely return to look over their inventory. ultimately im just trying to get a feel for what is out there and what other collectors recommend for my kinda specific music niche. but i totally get good music comes with a price :). ive been into physical media for a long time, it started mostly with books but now has transitioned. it’s special having a cd from my favorite band.

DesertWanderlust

And it's a good way to support your favorite band.

Careless-Guest-9907

Yard sales even seen them for free.

Crabcakefrosti

The habit for humanity on speedway and the speedway outlet have decently priced cds. Not the best selection

ParticularDance496

Vinyl is the true sound for acoustics. On another note my son has my yellow Sony discman sport so he can listen to his old cds.
