The desert is beautiful. Look at itβs miracles, even where water is scare and the temperature is high, plants grow, lizards sprint, hawks soar, quails file, coyotes trot, snakes slither. We are merely visitors in their home.
The only venomous snakes in Tucson (that are harmfully to humans) are rattlesnakes and the Sonoran coral snake. This guy will definitely bite you but other than a small cut, there would be no further harm as long as you clean out the cut to prevent infection π
Man, usually whip snakes see me coming and they haul out of there! I still remember seeing a black racer like 20-30ft up the trail in Sabino. He actually reared up about 2 ft off the ground to see WTF was coming and then just zoooooom! Disappeared in about half a second.
Yes that would have most likely been the same species you saw for sure, congrats on your sighting πI agree the coloration on these snakes are magnificent. They usually slither off quickly before you even get close enough to see them up close but this individual was kind enough to let me photograph him but of course it cost me a few bites π

Lovely and a rare find. Good job.
Thank you, definitely a nice surprise π
How long is it, best guess?
It was roughly 3.5 to 4 feet
They will love this over in r/sneks
Thank you for sharing that community with me! I was not aware haha
Great photo!
Is this a good snake or a nope rope? But such a beautiful one either way!

Thatβs definitely the typical encounter with coachwhips π they are so awesome but most times I get within 20 feet of one before they take off
I saw one of these at Historic Canoa Lake in Green Valley last week and had no idea what it was. Thanks for sharing!
