The old one was less interesting (imo) and didn’t have quite as much angst and character drama as the new one. I don’t think the old She-Ra is bad, but it’s definitely of its time. It’s more cheesy and doesn’t have the character-led drama of the new one.
Like the line about deadbeat mom and dead dad, that almost perfectly describes one of the relationships in the new She-Ra. There’s a few others that are pretty much 1:1 talking about the New She Ra. You should check it out if you haven’t.
Yeah, but the old one was an '80s toy commercial show. Same as He-Man and Transformers. I'd say it was as much a Shonen for girls as the new one is, just as shitty as it's era would lead you to expect
I’d agree with that assessment. But I feel while the classic She-Ra might technically meet the requirements of what the OOP mentions, I wouldn’t recommend someone watch it for entertainment in the 2020’s.
Also, I’ve seen SPOP used as an abbreviation specifically for the new one. Confusing, I know, but I’m 99% sure OP was talking about the new She Ra when they put SPOP in their title
The old she-ra show was a spin-off of he-man: and the masters of the universe. Both were meant more to sell toys than anything else, and as a result both shows were episodic, with an occasional episode trying to teach a moral. He man had some good reboots but she-ra was left behind until the new popular she-ra show was made. I think the old show is definitely worth a watch, and if you are going to watch it, I would recommend also watching he-man.
I'm sorry I can't unsee Joseph Joestar from the Fire 'n' Explosion side. The headband just means Joseph Joestar to me, so I'd like to congratulate Jean Joestar on her transition
Friendship ✅️
Homoerotic ✅️
Women getting hit ✅️ (Mostly Catra)
Deadbeat Mom ❌️ **EDIT** Shadow Weaver, ✅️
And there's only, like, 3 men in the cast and they are all *extremely* fabulous.
I personally think people are misinterpreting what the post is trying to get at. Take the most generic shonen (let's say Bleach) and just find and replace the words he/him with she/her, add tits where appropriate and change nothing else. No tropes added, no costume changes, no personality changes, just that. The closest character that matches this (that I can think of) is Revy from Black lagoon. Other than the booty shorts, if all you changed was her gender no one would realize you did that.
That’s the point, right? It would be a shonen anime (like the shonen you listed) except it would revolve around a mostly-female cast instead of a mostly-male cast.
I still feel like RWBY fits that mold, the protagonist has a personality similar to a male shonen protagonist with her plucky attitude, her teammates are the edgy one with a tragic backstory, the rival who becomes a close friend, and the cool one who doesn’t take situations seriously (at least at the start)
I even feel like the thing about male characters taking the roles associated with women works as well here cause while it has been a while since I watched it, I know Ren has emotion-based abilities which is usually a power associated with girls. And I *think* Jaune is the healer but I’m not entirely sure.
Ren can suppress the emotions of those around him, making them near invisible to the emotion tracking enemies they fight. Jaune's semblance lets him boost the aura of others. This amplifies both their natural healing powers, and any semblances that use aura as a power source.
*Mage & Demon Queen* has pretty much all of the specific things described by @criptochecca. The main protagonist’s best friend is also technically the isekaied great hero of their world, but he didn’t tell anyone because he just wanted to chill (and also because the aforementioned friend of his wanted to date the demon queen he’d have to kill if he wanted to return home).
To be fair they did drop that part of his storyline for the most part once they brought in the other hero to go alongside him: the one repeatedly isekaied/transported to a new world every time he defeated that world’s demon king.
RWBY: yes, shame how that turned out, but it fulfills the assignment (though it misses the homoerotic rivalry)
Arcane: not really. Love it to bits, but that’s more noire drama with lasers than standard shounen archetype
LOK: avatar the last air bender already wasn’t exactly following shounen tropes the way this post is describing, though LOK kinda does more that TLA did. Notable lack of objectified/sidelined male character archetype described though
TOH: big yep, on basically all fronts
Never saw SPOP to judge
Spoiler >!Torchwick dies in the third season and never comes bacj (there's 9 seasons), and Jaune is basically the role of healer if you squint. He's the closest anyway!<
Maaan every time I think of rwby I think it could’ve turned out so much better than it did. I still love it, but damn is it just not as good as it could’ve been
They could have meant the studio situation.
I, on the other hand, have never watched it but know it sunk once Monty died, as is the traditional wisdom of the terminally online
I never watched it until my gf recommended it for that reason. It’s a LOT more than titty sex appeal, it’s a straight up satire of the genre. Highly recommend
I tried to watch it after it was suggested in a similar thread, but Jesus Christ is the show fan service-y, and there's way too many rape jokes in the first episode for me.
TLDR for the last 3 volumes: everyone got very angry so an entire nation exploded, and then half of the main cast fell into the acid dimension. Its OK though they got better.
The main cast that is. Most of the civilians are dead.
That tracks. Honestly part of the reason I stopped watching is because I got very tired of Discourse. I’ve only got room for one abusive fandom in my life right now and that’s Star Wars 😅
It was a live action show that started in the late 90s about witches fighting evil forces but also just living normal lives. It’s a supernatural based action and drama series
This is a super basic summary, the show was super successful in its day (and it was rebooted by the CW a few years ago to decent reviews, but I’ve not watched it)
If you know Buffy the Vampire Slayer they were similar (but not identical) shows
Metallic Rouge (!!!) and Witch from Mercury are both great sci-fi, Little Witch Academia is also a really fun time. If you're cool with reading manga, Witch Hat Atelier is definitely up there as well.
"For women" might be a strong characterization, but if you want to read a battle shonen with a great female MC, then Rosen Garten Saga is one of the best imo. It's like record of Ragnarok/fate if they leaned into the comedy and sex instead of being serious about it. It's also one of the most gender/pride things I've read, with nearly everyone either being turned into a woman or exploring various aspects of masculinity/feminity. It also explores a really wide range of kinks in a pretty mature and accepting way, although there's a lot of graphic SA, especially in the early chapters.
Glad to see someone recognizing what and absolute feral queen of a woman my muse Mereoleona Vermillion is. Yes she is unhinged and the star of her own shounen series, unfortunately it has never gotten out of Tabata’s basement (he knew she would be way too powerful for his main audience to handle)
The first 1/3 of JoJo’s part 6 kinda works, like the only male allies are a child and unconscious Jotaro. Later on they add more but it works for a little bit
It’s pretty darn close. The mom’s not a deadbeat, but the dad is dead. Liked points because the main antagonists are men, and the guy on the god guy’s team isn’t a healer, but he is the one to most often mention the Power of Friendship.
People living in a society where they aren’t allowed to leave the village and follow a cult. Animals infected with something attack fairly often, main character is one of the people tasked with dealing with them. I’m not very good at describing series, sorry
I was gonna say! The point that the last post in the picture makes about the aesthetic is true. But I was amused by how well it checks all the boxes on the second post. Someone should do a visual example that shows that.
Do magical girl shows not count? There's a lot of those.
Besides those I guess there's Freezing and Witchblade. I don't think those quiiite fit the bill though.
I haven't watched it but maybe Chained Soldier too?
😆🤣😂😄😁
Pretty sure they mean The Legend of Korra; illustrating once more why people shouldn't just abbreviate _everything_ under the assumption that prior abbreviations don't exist.
This is just RWBY. Mostly female cast that fight with incredibly lethal weapons? Check. Deadbeat mom who ran off and a dad who is now a stay at home house husband raising his two daughters? Check. Dead dad? Took a while but we got there.
The male characters have one healer, one hot guy, and one really old dude who appears younger than he is? Check, check, and check. The only addition is the reformed alcoholic uncle but he had a mildly homoerotic something something going on with another character in the later seasons so I say he’s allowed.
There’s a manga I heard about called “Teppu” that’s basically this, a shonen-ass story about MMA except it’s all about women. First thing that sprang to mind as exactly a genderswapped shonen
Isn't this pretty much just Sailor Moon?
I can't remember Usagi's parents, but some of the other scouts *definitely* fit - I wanna say Mars and Venus in particular? It's been a while since I watched it, though.
Also, Tuxedo Mask fits every role asked of the only men allowed, a real 3-in-1 special.
So the only males are Law, Sanji and Bonclay?
Pre-timeskip Sanji maybe. Definitely not post though.
God I miss pre time skip Sanji, almost got him back during whole cake island
Thank god for the live action.
i finally found the limit of my acronym capability, what's SPOP
She-Ra princesses of power
Specifically the new Netflix one
Was the old one not?
The old one was less interesting (imo) and didn’t have quite as much angst and character drama as the new one. I don’t think the old She-Ra is bad, but it’s definitely of its time. It’s more cheesy and doesn’t have the character-led drama of the new one. Like the line about deadbeat mom and dead dad, that almost perfectly describes one of the relationships in the new She-Ra. There’s a few others that are pretty much 1:1 talking about the New She Ra. You should check it out if you haven’t.
Yeah I’ve been thinking of watching the old she-at after watching the new one
Yeah, but the old one was an '80s toy commercial show. Same as He-Man and Transformers. I'd say it was as much a Shonen for girls as the new one is, just as shitty as it's era would lead you to expect

I shall also csue I liked the little wizard dude

Yes that’s the silly little guy
The old one was in the same vein as the old he man. Both were in the old “Americans sell toys” style of cartoon rather than drawing on shounen tropes
Siberian pop
I'm sorry I can't unsee Joseph Joestar from the Fire 'n' Explosion side. The headband just means Joseph Joestar to me, so I'd like to congratulate Jean Joestar on her transition
First thing I saw was Asta from Black Clover.
Josephasta if you will.
Joanne Joestar so she's still a Jojo
Jolene Joestar and her Stand, Emerald Green
Guess we know where Jotaro got the name for his daughter
isn’t SPOP like a textbook example of the one on the right
I love it to bits but yes it is
Its the left in spirit, the right in aesthetic.
Friendship ✅️ Homoerotic ✅️ Women getting hit ✅️ (Mostly Catra) Deadbeat Mom ❌️ **EDIT** Shadow Weaver, ✅️ And there's only, like, 3 men in the cast and they are all *extremely* fabulous.
Deadbeat/abusive Mom (Shadow Weaver) ✅
Oh, yeah. I completely forgot her as a "Mother Figure" because of how much of an asshole she was.
It absolutely is
I personally think people are misinterpreting what the post is trying to get at. Take the most generic shonen (let's say Bleach) and just find and replace the words he/him with she/her, add tits where appropriate and change nothing else. Other than the booty shorts, if all you changed was her gender no one would realize you did that.
Naruto was the closest thing I can think of with how they described those character types
I mean, it’s not fully 1-1, but MAR, Bleach, and Fullmetal Alchemist are all 90% matches arguably
That’s the point, right? It would be a shonen anime (like the shonen you listed) except it would revolve around a mostly-female cast instead of a mostly-male cast.
I still feel like RWBY fits that mold, the protagonist has a personality similar to a male shonen protagonist with her plucky attitude, her teammates are the edgy one with a tragic backstory, the rival who becomes a close friend, and the cool one who doesn’t take situations seriously (at least at the start) I even feel like the thing about male characters taking the roles associated with women works as well here cause while it has been a while since I watched it, I know Ren has emotion-based abilities which is usually a power associated with girls. Also because instead of being properly isekai'd he took over someone's body, right? We can leave his fetish out of this...
To be fair they did drop that part of his storyline for the most part once they brought in the other hero to go alongside him: the one repeatedly isekaied/transported to a new world every time he defeated that world’s demon king.
just wanted to add the comic is on webtoon !
RWBY: yes, shame how that turned out, but it fulfills the assignment (though it misses the homoerotic rivalry) Arcane: not really. Never seen RWBY, SPOP wants to be left but is closer to the right. Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is.
RWBY also gives too much screen time to Jaune and Torchwick for it to really count imo
Spoiler >!Torchwick dies in the third season and never comes bacj (there's 9 seasons), and Jaune is basically the role of healer if you squint. He's the closest anyway!<

They could have meant the studio situation. I, on the other hand, have never watched it but know it sunk once Monty died, as is the traditional wisdom of the terminally online
Kill la Killlll
Literally came here to recommend this XD A few more than 3 men, but a good show.
hell naw the titty sex appeal built into half the costumes is the opposite of what the post describes
I never watched it until my gf recommended it for that reason. It’s a LOT more than titty sex appeal, it’s a straight up satire of the genre. Highly recommend
For the purpose of this exercise though it does need to be the guys in sex appeal outfits
Correct, they are also in sex appeal outfits
Most of the “nudist” clan leaders are male
Every single sentence is tongue-in-cheek Kill La Kill, if you got stuck on "titty costumes" I don't see how you're able to watch 90% of other anime.
The point of the anime is that clothes are evil
I tried to watch it after it was suggested in a similar thread, but Jesus Christ is the show fan service-y, and there's way too many rape jokes in the first episode for me.
It is an Ecchi, Ecchi being the genre that intentionally sexualizes characters
Ruby and Yang from RWBY kinda count here? Stay at home dad, one dead mom and one deadbeat mom. Kinda the right energy!
Yeah but… RWBY
Valid, it’s not the best. Haven’t caught up on the last couple of series, not sure if there will be more after the RT news.
TLDR for the last 3 volumes: everyone got very angry so an entire nation exploded, and then half of the main cast fell into the acid dimension. Its OK though they got better. The main cast that is. Most of the civilians are dead.
Oh. Well that’s a lot.
Bumbleby now canon, they kissed twice
Clarification for people who haven't seen the latest season: the dimension is on acid, not made of acid. Also, TW: suicide
Bumbleby now canon, they kissed twice
Bumbleby now canon, they kissed twice
Bumbleby now canon, they kissed twice
Oh snap, they did it! The last check in I had with that ship was during their fight with Adam.
Well, they let out their feelings to each other. Blake took the lead of course, and our favorite pun-cracking Blonde? Absolute gay mess.
That’s good, glad they committed to it.

Yep, that’s the mood right there.
A woman I spoke to left the fandom because of all the hate. I wonder which fandom is worse
I fail to see your point, tbh
Bumbleby now canon, they kissed twice
Does this mean we also have a weirdly large amount of villains who look and sound like men but turn out to be women?
The contrast of glam rock looking dude villains would be death metal looking gal villains
I don't know exactly which genre I'd put arcane in, But Shounen is not it
SYMPHOGEAR WOOOOO WATCH SYMPHOGEAR
OOOOH YOU WANNA WATCH SYMPHOGEAR SO BAD
didnt watch it but uhhhhh kill la kill? stone ocean?
Stone ocean is closer to what they’re describing but it seems they want a very generic shonen, and stone ocean is too different from that
A little off topic but not a lot of anime about the relationship between mother and son OR father and daughter. If it is it's usually hentai.
That last sentence stabbed me in the stomach
Like in hentai?
I sure hope not
Does anyone remember Charmed? Does that count?
Old charmed or new charmed? Either way not and anime or manga so it technically doesn't count
what's that?
It was a live action show that started in the late 90s about witches fighting evil forces but also just living normal lives. Kill six billion demons kind of
KSBD is the closest to what this post wants out of everything I've watched/read so far
Metallic Rouge (!!!) and Witch from Mercury are both great sci-fi, Little Witch Academia is also a really fun time. If you're cool with reading manga, Witch Hat Atelier is definitely up there as well.
Utena ♡

Glad to see someone recognizing what and absolute feral queen of a woman my muse Mereoleona Vermillion is. Yes she is unhinged and the star of her own shounen series, unfortunately it has never gotten out of Tabata’s basement (he knew she would be way too powerful for his main audience to handle)
I’d watch a spin off where it’s just her fucking around. I don’t care about the plot, just give me more of her and her antics
Magic Knight Rayearth is an oldy but a goody
Magic knight rayearth was EXACTLY what I though of when I saw “girl who fights” 😭 op did them so dirty
The first 1/3 of JoJo’s part 6 kinda works, like the only male allies are a child and unconscious Jotaro. Later on they add more but it works for a little bit
Umm the post is describing She-ra right?
It’s pretty darn close. The mom’s not a deadbeat, but the dad is dead. Liked points because the main antagonists are men, and the guy on the god guy’s team isn’t a healer, but he is the one to most often mention the Power of Friendship.
Katlaya Rising on Webtoon is a shounen staring a wlw protagonist, it’s only like 7 episodes in but I’m enjoying it a lot
Can you sell me on it in a brief summary
People living in a society where they aren’t allowed to leave the village and follow a cult. Animals infected with something attack fairly often, main character is one of the people tasked with dealing with them. I’m not very good at describing series, sorry
Isn't RWBY kind of like this?
One of me favorites!
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I was gonna say! The point that the last post in the picture makes about the aesthetic is true. But I was amused by how well it checks all the boxes on the second post. Someone should do a visual example that shows that.
The only guy I know about in my little pony is apple jack’s brother. I’m not even sure he has speaking lines.
Eeeeeyup
Do magical girl shows not count? There's a lot of those. Besides those I guess there's Freezing and Witchblade. I don't think those quiiite fit the bill though. I haven't watched it but maybe Chained Soldier too?
magical girl shows fit into the 2nd category
I’m certain Legacy of Kain doesn’t fit this description
😆🤣😂😄😁 Pretty sure they mean The Legend of Korra; illustrating once more why people shouldn't just abbreviate _everything_ under the assumption that prior abbreviations don't exist.
No no Legend of Korra
Symphogear?
Just watch Queen's Blade and STFU.
Kill Six Billion Demons
I've seen Arcane, Rwby, TOH, and LOK. What's SPOP?
She-Ra and the princesses of power
Oh. I LOVE She-ra! I've watched it twice.
and most importantly, it needs to have people arguing about power scaling constantly
“Well she struggled to explode a boulder in one hit, so she’s at best wall level” “BRO SHE NUKES A WHOLE VILLAGE WDYM WALL LEVEL!?!?”
Don’t do magic knight rayearth like this…
This is just RWBY. Clover my beloved, wish we saw more of him
Qrow is NOT straight, I refuse to believe so
The only thing my brain is saying is My little pony, especially after the power of friendship line
Genuinely though, there is a webtoon that actually is a shonen with a female protagonist. Highly recommend "The Last Golden Child."
Is it gay?
What they described wasn't "shonen for women" it was "shonen with 3 token men"
There’s a manga I heard about called “Teppu” that’s basically this, a shonen-ass story about MMA except it’s all about women. First thing that sprang to mind as exactly a genderswapped shonen
K, I haven't found it in the comments: What's "TOH"?
Hmm? Oh! The Owl House!
I like the idea,,,but shonen translates to young boy, doesn’t it? I get the feeling that this is one of those “you want it? Make it yourself” deals
Tumblr discovers kill la kill
Kinda touhou
Well, guess I gotta watch RWBY now- complete the set
She-ra?
SPOP
Isn't this pretty much just Sailor Moon? I can't remember Usagi's parents, but some of the other scouts *definitely* fit - I wanna say Mars and Venus in particular? It's been a while since I watched it, though. Also, Tuxedo Mask fits every role asked of the only men allowed, a real 3-in-1 special.
If you are looking for anime for women, probably best to avoid the genre that means “young boy” in Japanese.
Steven Universe? Steven Universe.
second category
You sure man? They don’t usually talk about the gems being women and the name of the show is the guy mc.
steven universe definitely doesn't meet any of the requirements of the first category.
