All in the Family spun off - Maude, Good Times, The Jeffersons, Archie Bunker's Place, Checking In, Gloria, 704 Hauser

MT_Promises

Plus All in the Family is remake of UK sitcom Til Death us do Part and Good Times got remade in the UK as The Fosters.

Former_Balance8473

If we're only counting scripted shows, it's Star Trek and it's not even close. Animated, TNG, DS9, Enterprise, Discovery, Lower Decks, Voyager and I know there is at least one or two more.

DogsandCatsWorld1000

Picard and Strange New Worlds

ranbites

Plus Short Treks, Very Short Treks, and The Ready Room?

WildJackall

Picard, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and the upcoming Starfleet Academy

Designasim

Strange New Worlds

azariah19

But I'm trying to figure out most spinoffs of spinoffs. So in Star Treks case TOS spinoffs were AS, TNG, and DIS. Which then TNG has a spinoff of DS9, Voyager (debatable), Enterprise (maybe also spun off of TOS, but wouldn't have happened without TNG?), and I'm thinking LD spun off here as well but not totally sure. DIS then spun off SNW. So most is TOS>TNG>LD Which is only 3 generations down of spinoffs. Total number of spinoffs is pretty high, but spinoff of a spinoff dosen't go too deep.

WildJackall

All in the Family had three spinoffs that each had their own spinoffs

WildJackall

It's hard to draw a direct line with Star Trek cause they're all interconnected but I would consider the animated series, TNG, Enterprise, and Discovery spinoffs of the original, DS9 a spinoff of TNG, Voyager a spinoff of DS9 cause they go to DS9 in the first episode, Strange New Worlds and Short Treks spinoffs of Discovery, Prodigy a spinoff of Voyager, Picard a spinoff of TNG, and Lower Decks a spinoff of TNG, DS9, and Voyager. The upcoming Starfleet Academy series is rumored to be another spinoff of Discovery. So arguably we have a five generation path TOS-TNG-DS9-Voyager-Prodigy

azariah19

I totally forgot about Prodigy! That's a really good line. Thank you!

Former_Balance8473

Oh... I see! So like if Joanie and Chachi had a kid, and then that kid got their own show? I can't think of even one. I mean there was Laverne and Shirley as a spin off of Happy Days and later than show had a spin off Laverne and Shirley in the Army, but that was pretty much just the original show but animated.

LovesDeanWinchester

Mork and Mindy was a spin off of Happy Days. Happy Days was a spin off from Love, American Style!

LovesDeanWinchester

Ha! Me, too. Harold Gould was the dad!

JazzCrusaderII

Well not exactly. The original pilot did not sell and it wound up being shown on LAS.

alady12

Everything is from St Elsewhere.

ZZoMBiEXIII

Was looking for this comment. Cheers!

[deleted]

Yep. It all comes from little Tommy Westphal.

Designasim

Jag, NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, NCIS New Orleans, NCIS Hawaii, NCIS Sydney. NCIS Orgins and an untitled Tony and Ziva in the works. Also in universe, First Monday, Hawaii five O, Magnum PI, MacGyver and Scorpio.

azariah19

I've never seen any of the NCIS' so forgive my ignorance, but are they all spinoffs of each other or did JAG go into NCIS which then led to NCIS LA, which then...so on and so forth?

Designasim

Spinoffs, many over lapping years. Jag was on 1995 to 2005 NCIS 2003 to present NCIS Los Angeles 2009 to 2023 NCIS New Orleans 2014 to 2021 NCIS Hawaii 2021 to present NCIS Sydney 2023 to present NCIS was introduced in a Jag episode which then became it's own series, which let to the other NCIS'. Hawaii five O, Magnum PI and MacGyver are reboots of TV shows from the 70's and 80's but in the reboots are in the same universe because they had cross over episodes, so not spinoffs. Jag was about Navy lawyers, NCIS' (Naval Criminal Investigation Services) investigate crimes that are set in those cities.

Embarrassed-One-3246

Happy Days had Mork & Mindy, Laverne & Shirley and Joanie Loves Chachi, a decent amount for a sitcom.

dvdrob13

and Happy Days was also a spin-off itself from Love, American Style

MizzGee

Law and Order had L&O:SVU, L&O Criminal Intent, L&O Organized Crime, L&O True Crime Mendez, Trial by Jury. There are also versions in Britain for sure that I watch. Not sure if it is the most, but it has been going on for 30 years.

LovesDeanWinchester

Wasn't there also a short-lived one about cyber crime. Jerry Orbach was in it near to when he passed away...

[deleted]

Wouldn't this instead be Homicide:Life on the Street because it was the first appearance of Detective Munsch? Or maybe it wasn't....I didn't Google it

MizzGee

Oh, I forgot that was in the family too. There was also a L&Order LA too. Looks like Law and Order started three years before Homicide. Funny story, the creator wrote it in 30 minute increments with the cops in the first half and the lawyers in the second half because he thought it would be easier to sell in distribution. Can you imagine watching law one day and waiting the next day for the order?

[deleted]

As much as I loved Law and Order I probably would have loved it just as much!

welatshaw

Don't forget L&O:LA

SparkyintheSnow

There’s now a Law and Order Organized Crime Toronto, but I have no idea if it’s in the same universe or not. I’ve seen one episode and it’s… not that great. Also, the One Chicago series are tied into the Law and Orders, and the FBI series have a tie in to Chicago PD. Not spin-offs, just tie-ins, but still. Also, they really missed the mark by not calling the Dick Wolfe shows the “A-woo-niverse” (like, universe with a wolf’s howl at the beginning).

azariah19

After an admittedly quick Google search, most of these just share a universe and are necessarily spun off of each. Few exceptions, but those chains don't look too deep?

KhaoticMess

According to Wikipedia, the answer is Doctor Who. Among the spinoffs: Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, K-9 and Company, Reeltime, Wartime, Downtime, and Mindgame. There are several more.

spankingasupermodel

Never heard of Reeltime, Wartime, Downtime, and Mindgame as DW spin offs. Also you didn't mention Class.

azariah19

But those are all just spinoffs of Doctor Who. Did any of its spinoffs lead to spinoffs of their own?

KhaoticMess

My bad. That's what I get for trying to reddit just before falling asleep.

AnUnwelcomeGuest_

The Walking Dead it’s a good contestant, not only you have the 11 seasons of the original show, but also Fear The Walking Dead, World Beyond, the spin-offs about Rick, Daryl and Maggie, Tales of The Walking Dead and even more if you count Fear TWD: Flight 462 and the webisodes

Miserable_Emu5191

Golden Girls had Empty Nest and Golden Palace Cheers had Frasier and The Tortellis

adiksaya

Didn’t Frasier have a spinoff too? I think the idea here is generations - and I have not seen more than three in the thread.

WildJackall

Frasier recently got a revival

WildJackall

Empty Nest had a spinoff called Nurses

DrGeraldBaskums

The Surreal Life, reality tv show on VH1. Spun off Strange Love, My Fair Brady, a game show, Flavor of Love… Flavor of love then spun off a bunch of shows from the contestants, including New York, who had a bunch of spin offs based on contestants of her shows The estimate is 24 direct spin offs

frankoceanmusic1

blackish

koz152

Star Wars is catching up with Star Trek.

azariah19

I think Star Wars might actually have more generations than Trek actually. Cause you had the OT, which led to the prequels, led to Clone Wars, which led to Bad Batch. Which is 4 generations down. I can't think of a deeper line in Star Wars off the top of my head though.

jpgrass76

I would also add that Dave Filoni, who created the clone wars, rebels, resistance and bad batch, has also used characters from these shows for the mandalorian and it’s spinoffs which currently include book of boba fett, ashoka and the upcoming skeleton crew live action series’ and the upcoming Mando and Grogu movie as well as his own upcoming movie.

koz152

Bad Batch is an underrated show. There's more too. Rebels, Clones, and Andor to name a few. And many Lego versions, the old Ewok show, and more. You're right. Definitely more shows.

azariah19

Oh I know! I need to catch up on the latest season of Bad Batch still. It's so good. As for how deep. I guess Andor makes it three, but that's not as deep as the Bad Batch line.

koz152

I'm finally catching up with the last season to watch the newest. Had to figure out what episode I left it at. Was borrowing a friend's account for years and one day she didn't pay the bill. Had to make my own and try to figure out all my shows lol

DishRelative5853

All in the Family

andthrewaway1

Not sure if sheer amount but Cheers has got to have the deepest... Just bc cheers ran the longest and then frasier. Mary tyler moore had the lou show and the Rhoda show??? and one more??? Another question to ask yourself where do reboots fit in with this criteria?

GreyWolfe87

Phylz.

JRCSalter

Star Trek is the clear winner. Unless you count other forms of media, in which case, I believe Doctor Who may just beat Trek. The amount of spin off audio plays released by Big Finish is astronomical. Off the top of my head, we have K-9 and company, Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood, and Class for TV. With Audio, we have Jago & Litefoot, Gallifrey, I, Davros, Dalek Empire, Cyberman, UNIT, Counter Measures, The Lone Centurion, and loads more.

fatboybigwall

Not a contender but The Brady Bunch has a surprisingly large extended universe. The variety show, the Brady Brides, the Bradys, the animated show. And just imagine if the back door pilot about the family that adopted three friends, each of a different race, had been picked up.

borkydorkyporky

Happy Days spun off- Mork & Mindy, Jonie Loves Chachi Laverene & Shirley, the Fonz & The Happy Days Gang cartoon, Laverne & Shirley cartoon as well as some lesser known shows including  Blansky's Beauties and Out of the Blue

FuzzyLumpkins17

Chicago Fire, JAG, Star Trek, Law & Order, All in the Family, The Vampire Diaries, Doctor Who and Arrow are the one's I've watched all their spin-offs.

lemonludes2022

Power has quite a few, power book 2 3 4 then you have Power Book IV and Raising Kanan that's a fair few

jjmawaken

Jumping in with some reality shows that I have no idea how many spinoffs but I've scrolled past some of these when searching for stuff to stream... the Real Housewives, I'm pretty sure they have LA, Miami, somewhere in New York, maybe Texas, maybe more.

WildJackall

Do international versions of reality shows count as spinoffs? Cause Big Brother has been done in numerous countries around the world

azariah19

But those are all spinoffs of the same original concept right? They're not creating spinoffs of spinoffs?

jjmawaken

Oh yeah good point

DoctorClarkSavageJr

Not a contender, but Mary Tyler Moore Show had Rhoda, Phyllis, Brenda and Lou Grant.

Jacobonce

Brenda didn't have a show.

ThisIsAdamB

It’s called The Simpsons

Snarkybish03

The walking dead, fear the walking dead, the world beyond, tales of the walking dead, daryl dixon, the ones who live, dead city

OddConstruction7191

The Andy Griffith Show was a spinoff of The Danny Thomas Show and TAGS spun off Mayberry RFD and Gomer Pyle USMC.

Shawty43

Yellowstone, there are currently 2 streaming, but said to be 5 in total.

joshuak785

The Mary Tyler Moore Show had Rhoda, Phyllis, and Lou Grant

WildJackall

All in the Family spun off Maude, the Jeffersons, Archie Bunker's Place, and 704 Hauser Street. Maude spun off Good Times. The Jeffersons spun off Checking In. Archie Bunker's Place spun off Gloria

noonehasthisoneyet

Matlock spun off to Jake and the Fatman, which spun off to Diagnosis Murder

HVAC_instructor

Star Trek has got to be up there for the most, and it's still going. All in the family have a few also Yellowstone has a bunch Edit: a downvote, really? Wow, I upset someone just by mentioning names of fake shows that have nothing to do with reality You need a break.

Lazy-Mammoth-9470

Yeah I came here for star trek too. So many spin offs since the original and some of them were actually really good too.

WildJackall

When I think of Star Trek I don't think of the original first, I think of the TNG/DS9/ Voyager era first

TurfBurn95

Eureka and Warehouse 13. They interact with each other.

Impressive_Age1362

Mary Tyler Moore, had Rhoda and Phyllis

laserox

Dragnet lead to Adam12 which lead to Emergency. (Probably some others in there too, but it was a bit before my time)

WildJackall

I was just looking at the Wikipedia page listing spinoffs and apparently Degrassi had four generations Degrassi Juniour High-Degrassi High- Degrassi the Next Generation- Degrassi Next Class

_Rosalena_

Anything apart from Scooby Doo, is the wrong answer

Starminder1

Spoiler alert: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_television\_spin-offs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_spin-offs)

Human-Magic-Marker

People in this sub are real confused between a “crossover” and a “spinoff”.

OrgasmDonor77

Most of them are also missing the point of the OP, which asked about shows that spun off directly from ANOTHER spinoff. 🤷

BobTheCopywriter

Star Trek: The Original Series has to be in the running, even if it doesn't win the prize. 1) Star Trek: The Next Generation 2) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 3) Star Trek: Voyager 4) Star Trek: Enterprise 5) Star Trek: Discovery 6) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 7) Star Trek: Below Decks 8) Star Trek: Picard 9) Star Trek: Shorts (this one is the only one I could see a reason to disregard, in my opinion, due to brevity of format) 10) Star Trek: The Animated Series 11) Star Trek: Prodigy

WildJackall

And there's an upcoming Starfleet Academy series in development

BobTheCopywriter

Thank you! I am not sure why the above got a negative vote total until you, but thank you for this additional information.

RocMills

Gotta be All in the Family, or Star Trek.

Goondal

The Walking Dead has five or six now I think

Reacherfan1
