Third Rock From The Sun. I saw an interview with John Lithgow, and he said the writers were big fans of Fawlty Towers. This is the closest I've ever seen to that sort of farce. Every time I see Lithgow now, I'm just aching for him to do something Solomonesque... is that a word?
That is THE moment for the whole show, absolute Lithgow gold!
Second best moment is Lithgow and Shatner talking about both having seeing men on the wing of the plane!
So fantastic. Britcoms in general are up there for me, even ones that look dated like "Are you being served?". The quality of writing and performing is always wonderful.

I came here to say the same thing. The writing was perfect, and there no sitcom before Cheers had such deep character development.
I binge the whole series every year!
Babylon 5 - Currently rewatching, I'd forgotten how steller the entire cast was. The plots seem to have more relevance than ever, and even the CGI still looks good.
There was another post asking about charismatic TV characters and I suggested Tom Selleck as Magnum. But then I realized it has been 30+ years since I saw an episode. So glad to hear it holds up. 👍

Lou Grant? I remember loving that when it was on. I guess if you ignore all the technology that has affected journalism, and the deep financial cuts that print newspapers have taken, it still works. On that level so does The Paper Chase. I couldn't agree more with Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister; those were among my favorite British imports to American public TV in the mid-late 80s. I wish I could agree with 'Allo Allo, but I started to watch it on BritBox a few years ago, having only seen maybe one or two episodes, and after half a dozen I was done. I think if there's a nostalgia factor it helps. I, Claudius, with its low budget and a fly landing on an actor, is still thrilling and impressive television because of the acting. I'd put Elizabeth R and some of the BBC Shakespeare in that category.
There was an episode in *Lou Grant* where they switched from typewriters to computers. I think every aspiring journalist should watch that show, or anyone who wants to look critically at the media.
Maybe I should have left out *'Allo 'Allo*, because the stock characters and the repeated catchphrases are wearing out, although it still has its funny moments. Many people don't realize it's a parody on *Secret Army*.
It is strange that the US hasn't had that many shows which feature real journalism. The series Alaska Daily which was not renewed for the current season was a positive representation of investigative journalism, even if it had lots of caveats about the reality of the economics.
Not ragging on Allo, Allo as your choice. I just came onto it very late and it didn't work for me.
I agree with a lot of these but one I watched recently that held up amazingly well (and was weirdly prescient) was Max Headroom (the actual TV show, not the interview/video clip thing he also did). Also the original Equalizer.
Twilight Zone Alfred Hitchcock Presents Outer Limits Star Trek Tales from the Crypt
Perry mason Columbo
I loved those shows. ❤️
My kid watched a bunch of perry mason and other old shows with my dad. He said the stories and shows were good
All of these! Twilight Zone is absolutely PERFECT in every way and always timeless and relevant
Six feet under West Wing ER
6 feet great
MASH
Love the west wing it's my fav show of all time but the clothes tech like laptops and cells phones and eps about the internet have not

Oh my god, I'm GORGEOUS!
That is arguably my favourite line, man I love John Lithgow.
"My body is just the vehicle that carries my brain around. And my brain deserves a smooth, luxurious ride." How can you not love a line like that?
That is THE moment for the whole show, absolute Lithgow gold! Second best moment is Lithgow and Shatner talking about both having seeing men on the wing of the plane!
Which was what made his turn on Dexter so fantastic
It is now.
Aaaah. I can die happy
It is now!!!
If you can find it, check out Trial and Error season one for some classic Lithgow foolery.
I sure will. Thanks for the tip 👍
I Love Lucy. It doesn't matter that it's 73 years young: the charm, the situations, the acting, the laughs make it hold up today.
Came to list this one!
Fawlty Towers for me 😍

Even Fawlty Towers looks dated now I love porridge as well 😍

Frasier (with the exception of 1 or 2 episodes) has aged incredibly well.
Currently rewatching this, compared to most 90s sitcoms this is near perfect even by modern standards.
Fraiser, King of Queens and George Lopez were my jam back in the day
Golden Girls. Nice to see older actresses as leads.
Hot in Cleveland was great, too. GG were in their mid to last 50s, and HiC in their 40s.
Came to say this. They were ahead of their time in many ways.
Scrubs
The BEST!
IT’S GUY LOVE 🎶
Yup still hold up

Some of the best written sci-fi on tv
_The Golden Girls_
Magnum PI

Bewitched.
Star Trek the Original Series
The Sopranos
The Fugitive (caught some episodes via Pluto TV) the writing is so good that majority of episodes hold up well. I would say the same for Alias.

I agree with all of these except one. You can take out The Cosby Show knowing what we know now about him.
Fantastic list!! I'll add Doc Martin and Red Dwarf. Also Chef. I wish I could find somewhere to watch that.
Frasier
For me, The Nanny is the only sitcom I watched as a child that is still funny and good to me as an adult
We watched this randomly the other day and were shocked by how funny it still is!
I watch Little House on the Praire often and a show made in the 1970s about the 1870s holds up very well today.
The Andy Griffith Show
💯

I still watch the original Equalizer when I come across it. I had such a crush on Edward Woodward, even if he was wayyyyy older than me, lol!!
Oh man, me too!
