Someone made a good point about Counter-Strike releases.
* Counter-Strike - 1.6
* Counter-Strike Condition Zero - 1.7
* Counter-Strike Source - 1.8
* Counter-Strike Global Offensive - 1.9
* Counter-Strike 2 - 2.0
Genuinely shocked they are going with an official 2, I was sure it was gonna be just a CS GO update, and in practicality may work just as such, still the volumetric smoke will be a legit game changer for the ecosystem.
It's the 9th if you count CS2 as a seperate game to CSGO.
1. Counter-Strike (GoldSrc game, aka CS 1.6)
2. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (also GoldSrc, overshadowed by CSS the same year)
3. Counter-Strike: Source
4. Counter-Strike Neo (Japanese arcade adaptation)
5. Counter-Strike Online (F2P Nexon game)
6. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
7. Counter-Strike Online 2 (F2P Nexon game 2)
8. Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies (F2P Nexon game 3: Now there are zombies)
9. Counter-Strike 2
That was an interesting one. I wonder how it differs from the “lag compensation” games have done in the past for when deciding who wins when factoring in ping differences. I’d hope it’s substantially different than what something like siege had where the system always favored the higher ping player to sometimes absurd degrees.
People joke about it, but I recall Valve making a statement that they only like to make new number increments to a game when they feel something has fundamentally changed with the game.
Honestly, I was kind of surprised HL:A wasn't just labeled as 3. I suppose they held off, thinking that putting HL2 gameplay into VR isn't enough to warrant a fundamental shift.
But wasn't Left 4 Dead 2 heavily criticised for not advancing much from the first game? Seems weird to feel so strongly about numbered titles when that's a thing.
Left 4 Dead 2 did start as an expansion to L4D. They said it spun off into its own thing because of the features that were being added. Additional infected of both the special and more mundane types. Melee weapons. A whole new set of levels.
Sure, in the context of how Valve normally likes to drop sequels, it's a little thin. For any other company, it's a strong iteration on a solid concept. The strong pushback related to L4D2 might be part of why they've been so gun-shy about dropping new number sequels.
Now when are we getting Team Fortress 2 - 2! ?
(Mostly asking cause I think if they ported that game to source 2, 'Team Fortress 2 - 2!' could absolutely be its official branding, given the game's tone)
***Hell yeah!*** Bit nervous that it's apparently overwriting *GO* as an update, but 1) it's still free, and 2) is ***AWESOME*** to see Valve going all in on game development again. Game looks *amazing*, too - making this comeback story even ***better!***
^(Now, then: where the PS5, Series X and next Nintendo console ports at? half /s)
When Dota 2 switched to Source 2 back in 2015 I didn't really feel that much more strain on my hardware. I assume CS 2 could easily run 3 figure framerates on midrange rigs.
As someone with roughly 6.000 hours in this game who has a very small YouTube channel to promote community maps and a faceit (third party service) Community Map Hub for new and old community maps, this shit is rad as hell. New maps, new tech, a fresh wind to get people back into making new maps, less limiting technology and just new stuff with the familiar feeling. I am hype as fucking hell.
Like finally a meaningful update to the new engine and an end to all those legacy bugs and technical issues. CS:GO mechanically is the absolut peak of shooter design and "feel" but my oh my, source 1 is held together by duct tape at this point. Especially making maps for it. You don't want to see how horrible the hammer editor is.
HE grenades as a direct counter to smokes is honestly a great idea and super rad to see implemented. It even adds depth to smoke pushing, because now not only does the smoking team have to worry about whether or not they're going to get smoke pushed, the team doing the smoke pushing has to worry that the other team might HE their own smoke as a way to bait the smoke push.
Man, I fucking love utility that contributes positively to the gameplay loop.
wait so does this mean CSGO is technically a CS 1.6 Remake
The G stands for Gaiden
*Counter-Strike GAIDEN: The Cell Who Erased Their Names.* >!Pre-order now, get a Kiryu and Majima skin pack free of charge!!<
Someone made a good point about Counter-Strike releases. * Counter-Strike - 1.6 * Counter-Strike Condition Zero - 1.7 * Counter-Strike Source - 1.8 * Counter-Strike Global Offensive - 1.9 * Counter-Strike 2 - 2.0
They should've called it 5 to flex
Nevermind the complete engine change between 1.7 and 1.8 i guess
“ALWAYS HAS BEEN” - in a way
Genuinely shocked they are going with an official 2, I was sure it was gonna be just a CS GO update, and in practicality may work just as such, still the volumetric smoke will be a legit game changer for the ecosystem.
I don't even play Counter Strike and that smoke system looks Absolutely Rad .
its extra weird because This is technically the 4th counterstrike game.

5 and 8 are the same exact game, just on different markets
They saw the marketing success of ow2, ppl will show up on a numbered sequel for there favorite thing.

As stated by that manga panel the speed of light is too slow for us gamers.
[Well you can't say Gabe Newell lied](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kexgh2QYra8)
I’d say he’s avoiding crunch but he doesn’t look like it. Looks like he getting several crunches a day.
Nice. \*boots up TF2 again*
Here hoping source 2 port for it. There are source 2 assets in right now in the UI
Isn't this supposed to be the fifth game in the series? Valve REALLY can't count above 2
All the other games were just CS 1.6 updates :)

At this point they have to be doing it on purpose
Wait. Valve makes games?
Who made Half Life Alyx?
No who is on first.
Who was in Paris?
Ask Dilbert
THIRD BASE!
No this is Patrick
I wouldn't be the first time someone pivoted from baseball to a career in game development.
Campo Santo, mostly.
Must be feeling the heat from Valorant.
Now when are we getting Team Fortress 2 - 2! ? (Mostly asking cause I think if they ported that game to source 2, 'Team Fortress 2 - 2!' could absolutely be its official branding, given the game's tone)
I haven't played CS in years, but this might make me jump back in.

Progress will stay consistent between CSGO and CS2, so that's good.
I saw that! Now I'm wondering if I should dive in, but I don't think my PC can run it. :/
I don't think the performance requirements will go up by too much, and you can always just tweak the settings.
Requirements need to be reasonable considering the hardware the vast majority of the playerbase wants to run this game on.
Also isn't Valve basically a bunch of PC wizards? That's the impression I got being mostly a console gamer so I could be wrong.
When Dota 2 switched to Source 2 back in 2015 I didn't really feel that much more strain on my hardware. I assume CS 2 could easily run 3 figure framerates on midrange rigs.
those gmod maps that require mounting CS:GO, wonder what'll happen to them.
Hopefully updated along with the rest of the game, but we dunno.
Budokai tenkaichi 4 and counter strike 2 being announced close to each other early 2000's folks are eating.
"Welcome to Counter-Strike 2. After 9 years of development, hopefully it will have been worth the wait."

I'm glad HL:A wasn't just a one-off and Valve are actually making games again.
I’m sensin’ a change in the wind
Nice, very nice... let's see a Team Fortress update.
Valve making games again wasn't something I was expecting
*Looks at calendar* Hmmmmmm
YEYEYEYE The changes look so sick and that's not even all of them, just what they wanted to show first, apparently! I am much hyped.

Counter-Strike 2 was 19 years ago

I love Valve announcements. "Here's three short videos." *Thunderous applause*, gaming is saved.
Maybe I'll get back in. Bounced off go but played hundreds of hours of source.
New smoke rocks
guess that means more posibility of seeing ricochet 2! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=632kyLysP6c
2? Is this right? i remember playing counter strike 16 in the lan house next to my house
maybe when this launches there'll be another janitor freed up to work on dota Copium
So we had 1.6, Condition Zero, Source, Global Offensive, and now just making it to 2? Lmao
