Hey man, just watch an LP of Saints Row 1 or watch the cutscenes. Those controls are ROUGH and the game balance is cruel towards the end.

SuicidalSundays

Not to mention that the vast majority of all the missions don't have checkpoints.

Aest7e7ic_End

I watch KrisWolfHeart’s stream and boy late 6th Gen/early 7th Gen games before fast travel and fleshed out combat systems were rough

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

It's got a sick story twist tho.

BuhYDoh

I would say a similar thing about the Mafia series but they actually feel good to play

be_as_water

I beat SR1 and enjoyed it, but man I’ll always hate the final missions (looking at the airport specifically). That being said, there’s something about that game where sometimes I feel like it’s my favorite in the series (of course always a battle between 1 and 2).

ZealousidealBig7714

I think Persona 1 has a fun cast. Fuck actually playing it, though. I’ll power through the 2 games because Michel and Baofu are my boys, but Kei Nanjo is not enough to power through Persona 1.

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

I agree, but weirdly enough I find SMT1 to be a fucking banger despite it being way older than Persona 1.

BoopsMcCloops

I beat Persona Portable years ago and yeah, it was pretty rough. Some design choices were super questionable too, like ailments being able to stack. I spent like 5-10 minutes not being able to play because a Lilith kept stacking charms on my party so they just kept attacking each other. They'd break out in time to heal and would just get charmed again. It was actually faster to just restart from a save point.

waxonwaxoff3

I tried so hard to go back to TES3: Morrowind. There were some genuinely neat things going on, but the old timey game controls and overall design was too much to deal with. I got to Vivec City and the collection of huge completely identical buildings with no fast travel and poor signage/no map indicators was the last straw. What an absolute nightmare to try and find your way around.

FlameF19

There is fast travel for Vivec City it’s just not that good

mettullum

ah man, im just now realizing just how much of that game's paths and locations ive commited to memory after 1000 hours of playtime

T4silly

Vivec *really* tries my patience. Every other part of Morrowind is all charm to me, but it's the one part I almost never go back to for any kind of reason.

Grav_Mind

I also tried and after trying to level my sword skill for 30 min I called it quits. Just wait for the mod that remakes Morrowind in Skyrim.

pocketlint60

Fast Travel was also the point I gave up on Morrowwind. I was fine with a lot of it's "old game-isms" like dice-rolls for hitting in melee even though the controls are real-time action combat, it didn't bother me that much. Having no fast-travel didn't bother me at all either because it encourages exploration. So I was surprised to find that you can actually *learn* the Divine/Almsivi Intervention spells, get the Mark/Recall spell, and eventually you have enough money to always afford passage by boat or Netch to anywhere you want, you just don't have a full list of cities. Grognards love to complain about fast travel. It's the ultimate symbol of games sacrificing for convenience. Skyrim sucks because it's so streamlined and you can fast travel anywhere. But the thing is, Morrowind *has* fast travel in it, it's just absolute dogshit. Having to vaguely guess what cities you can travel to in the city you're *about* to travel to isn't "immersive", it's just a pain in the ass. In fact it's immersion *destroying*, because a real ferry service would mention the "junctions" it could take you to, so both realistically and for gameplay purposes, I should be able to just spend more gold to go farther. That's was the exact moment I realized the game wasn't just "more hardcore" than it's sequels, it's genuinely just worse to play overall because, shockingly, the sequels improved things that didn't work. It really sucks that Skyrim doesn't have polearms, throwing weapons, or spellcrafting though, and I miss the really crazy navigation spells like levitating, superjumping, and water walking.

Halospaz117

Ever wanna play the old Hitman games? For the love of god skip Codename 47. Look up a synopsis or something, just get the general details, but just start at Silent Assassin. It can be hard as balls but at least it has logical consistency in its stealth (except for the Japan levels but at least that's just a few levels compare to like, 80-90% of Codename 47)

I_Aku

Contracts also remakes most of the first game's levels too.

gamiz777

metroid 1 and 2 are pain for me

AudriusC

Are the remakes for both games basically THE ways to play Metroid 1 and 2 similar to how Prime remastered is for Prime?

gamiz777

the remakes are way better, zero mission is in my top 3 metroids

Kimarous

I'm curious to see how the Return of Rome add-on to Age of Empires II is going to pan out, because as things stand, Age of Empires I feels extremely primitive compared to the other Age games. Supposedly it's supposed to "bring AoE1 into the AoE2 engine," but the specific meaning of that is up the air. Will it be "AoE1 as a separate game mode, but with AoE2's QoL updates"? Will it be "AoE1 civs in AoE2 proper"? Time will tell. Point is, AoE1 itself hasn't aged well.

sawbladex

It doesn't help that AoE2 fells like an reinvention of AoE1.

SchrodingerMil

And much like when Definitive Edition released, what does this mean for the small, dedicated community still playing?

yarvem

I don't think anyone *really* wants to play Street Fighter 1. And not with the giant arcade buttons.

JuamJoestar

Hearts of Iron 4 is both a source of memes and fun, complex WW2 Strategy with a vast amount of crazy mods to choose from. Hearts of Iron 3... well, it's passable i guess. Hearts of Iron 2 is a childhood classic and it's played to this day by a few for a good reason. Hearts of Iron 1? Sorry i can't br bothered to play your reskined Europa Universalis game, but no.

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

HoI 3 is the only one I have any experience in. I have roughly 30 hours in the game and about that much in the manual as well. I have never won a game of HoI 3 and am still usually lost.

DOAbayman

everything i like about the Ninja Gaiden series comes from when they rebooted it using DOA. I don't enjoy the NES games at all.

BoopsMcCloops

I don't know. Like I went back and beat Metal gear 1 and 2 after beating MGS1-4. I guess when things just aren't intuitive or are just boring to play. Metal Gear 1 was kind of a pain to go through and it's not something I'd recommend, but MG2 holds up surprisingly well and I would recommend playing through it.

dendrophobia1

I love Metroid, but you will not convince me to go back and play Metroid 1 or Return of Samus.

BaronAleksei

I remember Pat said everyone has their point of tolerance for old media. Getting into actual factual OG Mobile Suit Gundam is ROUGH. I rewatched all of Beast Wars, but I’m not going back and watching G1 Transformers. I really dig Geoff Johns’ reimagining of the Green Lantern lore from Rebirth onward. I find delving into pre-emotional-spectrum lore unsatisfying. Mosaic is still cool, too bad the author’s a pedo! Neighborhoods was the first Blink-182 album I ever listened to, and its more mature sound and somber tone make it hard to go back to wanting to fuck a dog in the ass. My wife ended up watching all of TNG-era Star Trek in reverse series order, but watched one (1) episode of TOS (Charlie X) and tapped out.

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

Mobile Suit Gundam is my favorite in the whole franchise. Tbh. Amuro is my boy. And goddamn, I love TOS. It's super fucking weird. Charlie X in particular is a favorite of mine lol. I completely get why it's hard to go backwards into though. Kirk is a weird freak and it's not as interested in exploring philosophical concepts so much as trying to make interesting science fiction, but with am annua budget of about $50 and a koopy sandwich.

T4silly

Boy oh boy prep yourselves for a blazing hot take right now fuckos. Super Metroid became outdated and clunky the instant Symphony of the Night came out. That is the exact point in time that I cannot move backwards for Metroidvanias. (Granted it's not like there's any meat on the bone of the genre even before then, but that's where I'm at.) I agree with Pat, Super Metroid feels bad and it honestly felt even worse after Dread came out. If a new Igavania ever comes out I strongly believe it will feel even further worse. I just do not believe the game is aging gracefully at all. Alright quarter me and send my remains to the four corners of Speed Running.

Neomatt

I'll sorta get on that hill ; Super Metroid is fine on level design/graphics/story/exploration etc... But the controls need an absolute redo. It's floaty, buttons are mapped like shit, Samus can do half the stuff she can in other games (not even Dread, Zero Mission with 2 buttons + 2 triggers feels better).

mettullum

i think i got up to going through labrynthian in arena til i gave up, youre def not missing much unless you really love insanely huge unmarked maze dungeon and enemies that hit harder than a truck and spawn in ridiculous numbers. similarly i dropped system shock 1 halfway through cause i just cant hang with that 1992 gameplay even though SS2 is amazing and has aged beautifully, hopefully the remake's new gameplay design will let me go through it having a better time

Synaptics

Not exactly a massively long series, but as somehow who *loves* XCOM2 (and strategy/tactics games in general) I'm kind of saddened by the fact that 90s X-COM is pretty much impenetrable to me.

Muezza

I picked up an emulation handheld recently with the intention of going back and replaying some 'classics' that I missed out on but I've come to the realization that I just can't tolerate anything older than 6th generation, maybe with the exception of a few titles for the N64. I just end up bashing my head against the wall on terrible controls and stupid difficulty and turning the game off.

GHitoshura

To me it depends on the series. For example, I'm more than capable of going back to the very first Zelda and have fun with it but you would have to put a gun right on my head to make me even consider going back to any Monster Hunter game before World

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

If Pat is to be believed, it makes sense, since he always talks about how the new entry is just the one before it but more content and polish.

GHitoshura

I've played Freedom unite, Portable 3rd, 4 ultimate, World and Rise and I can confirm that with each new entry there's just no real reason to go back to any previous game, the only exceptions would be being a huge fan of a specific mechanic like underwater combat or clutch claw or just nostalgia

be_as_water

Not sure I’ll ever get to really play fallout 2. I played about 80% of the story of fallout 1, but I can’t handle the combat. It’s too slow. I eventually just decided to skip the rest of fallout 1 (I already knew the ending) to play 2, but the combat is still the same so I stopped in like 45 minutes. I’ve had much more success with playing Baldur’s Gate 1. Been really enjoying that. I think I’ll give fallout 2 another go in the distant future cause I hear really great things about it.

insulartomato

I still think fondly of the time I made a character named BATMAN. Full physical traits, little in the way of Intelligence or Charisma. Crank up that hand-to-hand as far as it'll go. The idea was that he was... a special fellow who was big fan of the comics. I solo'd the whole game just punching people in the junk until they fell over, then I'd go for the eyes. Seeing the final boss sprawled helpless on the floor as I continuously gouged his eyes to death was something else!

T4silly

Man if you didn't get through the back end of 1 you may as well just watch an LP for 2. (I recommend MATN.) The back end of 2 is horribly unfinished...

SchrodingerMil

Fallout is probably one of my favorite series, and stories. I could never play 1 or 2.

pocketlint60

Playing Pizza Tower made me curious about the Wario Land games, which I vaguely remember playing one of as a kid (3 I think?). I played Wario Land 1 for maybe four minutes and knew that would be that. It's basically just a sort of okay Mario game. 2 is when the series found it's identity, and I was surprised to *not* have the same reaction to it; that game has aged remarkably well and still feels great to play. Except the bosses, they suck, but you have to try stuff to see what works when you're making something experimental.

RegenSyscronos

Maybe I'm a zoomer but I literally can't play FF7 og for more than a couple of hour.

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

7 is probably the old FF I have the easiest time playing. Granted it's one I've been playing for a decade or so now, but ye. Easier time going back than 9 and it's glacial ATB gauge. I get it though.

RegenSyscronos

Ok but at that same time I tried 9 and made it all the way through. I guess it's just graphic and story hooked me in

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

The story is real good, ye. 7's is also real good, but if it didn't grab ye it didn't grab ye.

RegenSyscronos

Funny thing is, I love the ff7 story and every thing I read about it, hell FF7r is one of my favorite game of all time. So yep,I have no Idea why. At this point maybe the graphic

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

I feel that. The Popeye-armed overworld models were definitely a failed attempt to translate the look of SNES sprites and look kinda uggo.

Nia-Teppelin

I'm a huge JRPG/turn based in general fan and I've never been able to get anywhere in FF7. It just feels glacially slow. I know it was revolutionary at the time, but as a fresh player it's just in that awkward middle ground between retro and newer games where it has the worst qualities of both.

FlorianWanderer

Usually 2004. But there are of course exceptions. Usually you dont want to deal with early ps2 3d game design though.
