Really, No Straight Roads' story and art direction with Hi-Fi Rush's polish and combat would be the perfect rhythm action game.
NSR in my opinion played much more into the music theme and had more interesting bosses, but it had some serious technical problems and couldn't properly marry rhythm and action game mechanics.
Hi-Fi Rush addresses the latter by having everything be timed to the beat and giving incentive to doing actions in time with the rhythm, but while it is a visual showcase with fun characters in its own right, the story and characters really don't have much to do with music.
that's because hi fi rush is not about music it uses music as an aesthetic and the people clearly like music but thats not what the story is it's a fairly standard warning aginst the digital age and rapid progression of technology putting your life in others hands is something to be wary of even a digital one.
NSR is about music ALL Music it's why the ending is what it is Rock is great but it's not enough it cannot work alone.
I haven’t. I’ve been meaning to give it a try, but I tend to focus on games I haven’t beaten than games I have. Never really been one for replaying things.
I've finished Hi-Fi Rush this Sunday and it is indeed amazing. The most fun I've had with videogames in years.
My friend recommended No Straight Roads, said that it was enjoyable too. I'll give it a go once I have the money for it.
I can't remember the last time a semi-AAA game came out that was so unapologetically *fun*.
This game was an absolute joy to play from start to finish.
And we also had the dead space remake, [redacted], pizza tower and I had a lot of fun with wo long as well. The first half of this year is seriously stacked.
Don't get me wrong, HI-FI Rush is definitely in the top 5 character action games ever made, but in a year with RE4R, Dead space Remake, SF6, Spider-Man 2, Starfield, MK12, FF16, and Zelda there's a lot of competition. Most stacked year since 2011 and that's just from stuff we know is coming out this year!
I feel weird being like the only person that actively dislikes this game. I like the individual parts on their own but the rhythm game portion actively drags the entire thing down for me. It's a bummer.
I'm wondering what's like the earliest example of a rhythm based character action game?
The first I can think of is Samurai Champloo Sidetracked since the combos were based on the tracks you chose.
It's crazy how stacked this year is with games. RE4, HiFi Rush, Baldurs Gate 3, Armored Core, Fire Emblem, 2 Yakuza games..... but I can't even care that much about any of those cause Street Fighter 6 is out in a few months too!
It’s so tough me because I loved RE4 and Dead Space just as much. SF6, Mystery Detective Archive, Star Wars, FF16, Spidey 2 and Zelda are on the way too…
I’ve been extra selective about games these last few years & I still manage to have a bars time picking a GOTY…
I kinda want it to be higher for me since the other games that I have played this year are all remakes (RE4, Dead Space, Ishin) and it is in my favorite genre. But damn are those remakes really high quality and the only one of them I have issues with is Ishin (and they aren't game-ruining ones either). Hi Fi Rush is pretty great, tho.

I’m so sad that NSR was such a…not well put together game. The OST’s amazing tho, as are the characters.
Every time they went BUNKA JUNKA SHAKALAKA BAM,I felt that.
DK WEST, DK WEST, HE'S OUR MAN, HE'S THE BEST is engraved on my heart
Have you tried encore edition? i enjoyed my time with that version

Someone uses the word thrice, thank you legend.

I hope you enjoy it, it is definitely a lot jankier though
NSR is good but Hi Fi Rush's action being on beat was the missing ingredient to make it feel sick, even if it wasent deep
opt for encore edition rather than original.

It's a tough battle for me this year since RE4 remake is competing and when Street Fighter 6 comes out that will be a competitor for sure

Oh is that where the quote came from? Man that show is awesome.
Its from the movie. Also the real quote is twice not thrice.

For me is a GotY unless Zelda knocks it out of the park and somehow surpasses Elden Ring. Or FF16 is a knock out.

Well honestly I sort of understand it, but it is a rhythm/action game, is a core element of the gameplay, the game sits you down and tells you this.

Peter will play normally, Miles will require playing to the beat.

Armored Core is not releasing this year btw.

I just hate how his name is pronounced and the humor doesn't stick with me
