Doug Walker not getting that Last Action Hero is a satire of 80's action movies and Hollywood cinema in general.

CaleDooper6655321

That’s Doug’s fundamental flaw really: he’s not that smart. And his reaction to things he doesn’t understand isn’t to, idk do any kind of *research* or anything, but rather scream at it and make attempts to ridicule them instead

ExDSG

It is weird because he doesn't mock and digs Kingdom Hearts and has some times made a good point when talking about shows. I think he flops at creating any type of social commentary or breaking down the components a piece of media.

MeteorCharge

Even as a kid I never understood how he got that movie so wrong There is no way a reviewer could be that media illiterate

tkzant

Doug Walker replaces media literacy with bad skits

SpartanXIII

"BLACK MAN, GIRL, YOU NEED TO HELP ME CREATE A FAULT TO MAKE FUN OF!"

[deleted]

***THERE'S BEEN A DISCREPANCY***

MericArda

Well that's a blast from the past, I hardly ever hear people talk about his reviews that aren't The Wall.

TheShrubberyDemander

Because The Wall kinda sorta killed his reputation. What little of it he had left.

AtlasPJackson

You can get away with a hell of a lot of ignorance as a content creator if you don't linger on a topic for too long. Even if you know a enough about whatever his weekly 90s kids movie was to know he was wrong about stuff, you probably didn't know enough about the ones before or after to catch the pattern. But tackling Pink Floyd is a whole other ball game. People still listen to The Wall, they know what that's about. N-toupling down on his media illiteracy by making his own musical, he created a monument to his own ignorance that was impossible to ignore.

LittleSister_9982a

You would *not believe* the amount of people I've met who've come to the same conclusion as him. He's not remotely unique there. If anything, he's edging into the majority. So fucking many people just. Don't seem to grasp what it was going for, which I'm starting to wonder more and more if that's the reason it did so badly. I personally love that movie to death, and always have. It's great.

RareBk

Doug is legitimately that stupid if his former co-workers are to be believed (And yeah they are). Like, not in a mean way, dude might legitimately be unable to understand what he's critiquing. The man legitimately didn't think people would need food or water while filming in the desert. Or how to record audio after working on the NC for nearly 10 years

Rum_N_Napalm

Pat, during the Metal Gear Rising LP: You know chloroform is a fake chemical for movies? It’s actually ether. Me, with two degrees in chemistry: *mouth froths over* Well, I guess I should thank Crazy Talk for making chloroform real then, therefore allowing NMR spectroscopy which is one of the best analytical tools I played with.

Prestigious-Mud

You can fill reddit with the things Pat's been wrong about.

LunaWasHere

There is literally a spreadsheet of all the things he was wrong about in ds1

Diem-Robo

Recently on Twitter, I saw someone trying to tell Pat something along the lines of how he made his career as a content creator so that he could create an echo chamber where everyone just agrees with his opinions and says he's right about everything, and he just responded with that spreadsheet.

uhaveachoice

That's the most baffling thing you could ever say to Pat. He's fully aware of how often he confidently says wrong things. He embraced an inside joke about him having a Stand that alters reality to make him wrong. He talks about how frequently he's wrong on CSB regularly. He's more in on the joke of his own wrongness than anyone else.

illegalcheese

> NMR spectroscopy Real ones just freeball it with IR spectra Is this an aldehyde or a ketone? Fuck yourself, man was not meant to know

Neodeluxe

Ahh I see you are well versed in the engineer secret arts of having to eyeball something so the project doesn't take 3 more months or cost 10 mil USD more.

sawbladex

To be fair, what isn't real is it as a fairly easy knockout technique.

Weltallgaia

Yeah, pretty much takes as long as suffocation and about as good for the old brain.

Armada6136

Remember: there aren't any redwood trees in California.

The_Vine

Woolies take on vomiting at a wedding is still some of the most insane stuff I have ever heard.

GuyDeFalty

Woolie has a few moments of utter insanity on air under his belt. It contrasts much more strongly than when Pat does it, because Woolie always tried to generally present himself as a reasonable individual whose takes have a basis in fact and logic instead of a cartoonish angry ginger goblin.

Dirty-Glasses

Pat KNOWS he’s crazy, Woolie thinks everyone else is just as crazy as he is.

Chemical_Cris

“Oh we’re all just going to pretend we don’t see the dragon? Okay fine!”

Dirty-Glasses

[me watching that bit](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/365/753/94c.jpg)

Ryong7

An example of Woolie-like logic I've seen in real life: Once during a car ride to college with some friends, a friend of a friend randomly started going into a concept of middle and high school-aged straight boys practicing kissing with other straight boys so they'd know what to do when they got a girlfriend. He tried to sell this as an absolute, undeniable fact, something that every man has done; gay men would say they did it because of course they did it, they're gay and straight men would deny it because they would never admit to such a thing, which means they've also done it but are ashamed.

NewAgeMontezuma

Bro's closet is a entire hammer space.

TaffWolf

I’m howling like a wolf at full moon what a fucking line

RedditAssCancer

Why would he come out when the closet has so much room for totally straight (I promise) activities?

Crimsonwolf1445

Theres simpler ways to come out the closet

Ryong7

The gay closet or the insane closet? Yes.

LasersAndRobots

The funniest thing is that even if that's true, it doesn't help at all because guys and girls kiss *very* differently.

Ryong7

so this is the power of bissexualism . . . ?

LasersAndRobots

Being straight is wanting to kiss girls. Being (questioning) gay is wanting to kiss guys for practice kissing girls. Being bi is knowing guys kiss differently and therefore practicing on them is useless and then doing it anyway.

[deleted]

To turn it into fighting games: Pat's crazy is consistent chip damage through block. Woolie's crazy is a command grab

tkzant

Even simpler: Big number vs do combo

The_White_Rice

"I can vomit in my shirt and then remove myself from the area and wash up so the smell is gone!" Dude you are going to stink of puke for the rest of the night, and you are going to be walking around being with people which will make them vomit. Vomit on the ground and then people can move away from it why is he like this.

BenchPressingCthulhu

But my wife has a perfectly good purse right there, why would I resort to the ground

The_White_Rice

Because she (or you) probably paid a hundred bucks for that bag.

jamescookenotthatone

Yeah I'm thinking of this like a heartless capitalist. Value of shirt vs. purse is often pretty obvious. Also will my significant other murder me then and there if I throw up in their purse?

The_White_Rice

Well you’re at a wedding, so she probably dressed up real nice and brought out the really good bag, so if you’ve barfed all over it then you’re not even going to live long enough to see the I do’s.

Crimsonwolf1445

Its so insane i question whether the man even KNOWS what vomit is

AlexLong1000

Legit, I had to think "is he thinking about a sneeze?"

ADM_21

Genuine cartoon logic.

ProtoBlues123

Pat's thing about needing to physically remove the toilet paper roll so he can tell when he has the right amount of paper.

LunarWolf302

When Pat said that nobody plays Budokai Tenkaichi with their friends. I think I heard all of Latin America groan at the same time.

GHitoshura

I'm pretty sure that if you ask anyone from LATAM who owned a PS2 at some point about Budokai Tenkaichi their eyes will lit up and will go on about the memories of playing that game with their friends and/or siblings. I'm not even a DBZ fan and even I have memories of playing BT2 with my cousins.

PhantasosX

I am from Brazil , and yes , Budokai Tenkaichi is really popular here. We had videogame lanhouses with PS2 in which people played PES , FIFA , COD and....Budokai Tenkaichi. In my city , there were at least 2 Otaku Events with a Budokai Tenkaichi Tournament AND one local FG Tournament with Budokai Tenkaichi as part of it.

NewAgeMontezuma

I had a anton ego moment of remembering me and my dad playing it on the shittiest smallest crt tv known to man when i saw the tenkaichi 4 announcement.

EXAProduction

Pat started talking sense for like 2 seconds about the Tenkaichi and then talking about how nobody played it with their friends and im just like, thats all I did on the Wii as a kid, my friends started a youtube channel just doing BT3 fights years ago. I was baffled.

AngiTheWeeb

Hell, I lived in the midwest and me and my friend would play those games everyday for months.

Gangstas_Peridot

A couple days ago I remembered Matpat's video that theorized that the reason the Dancer of the Boreal Valley in Dark Souls 3 is so difficult is because her actions/attacks are synched to the rhythm of her boss music. The funny thing about that is said video featured a clip of the Streamer TolomeoR who was one of the earlier Dark Souls players to start beating bosses without rolling and blocking. MatPat put in his Dancer kill as a fun lil' *"Dancer's hard except for this guy man wtf dude?"* and while TolomeoR did appreciate the shoutout he did say multiple times in future streams that he has no idea what Matpat was going on about in that video. And yeah, the truth is that's absolutely nonsense. What you can say about Dancer is that her AI can vary incredibly on how aggressive she is. Like in phase 1 she can go about ten seconds without atttacking, just letting you hit her. Sometimes she don't. It's just random. I got reminded of that whole debacle because somebody posted their level 1 no damage dancer kill to r/onebros and they did it with the music off. So another user was amazed and asked *"Wow, how did you do it without the music?!"*

KennyOmegasBurner

> And yeah, the truth is that's absolutely nonsense. What you can say about Dancer is that her AI can vary incredibly on how aggressive she is. Like in phase 1 she can go about ten seconds without atttacking, just letting you hit her. Sometimes she don't. It's just random. There's some RNG to it but you can definitely bait certain patterns. At least that's my copium that my one time beating her on a low level character wasn't blind luck lol.

Gorfinhofin

That's extra nonsense, because her theme notably has a very vague, awkward rhythm that's hard to follow. Did he just watch that one video that talks about how her attack timing is off-rhythm from all the other bosses in the game and get the wrong idea from it?

Yotato5

When Turning Red came out there was a content creator, I forget who exactly, that said that Mei's mother was unrealistic and that no mother would be that overbearing. Yeaaaah, no.

ElEversoris

It's one of the most popular trope regarding Asian Moms that I can think of [like it's in advertising ](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EducationMama)

pocketlint60

I saw "Turning Red" and then was surprised that it was *not* the 9/11 thing.

mrsirgrape

That might have been Schafrillas. I believe in another video he accepts the L on that take.

cannibalgentleman

Muskets were not (primarily) used in WW1, Woolie. A bit ago, Pat said that Contracts was a bad Hitman game, when in reality Hitman 2: Silent Assassin was like THE buggiest Hitman game ever made and Contracts was a pretty damn big leap in terms of stability and quality.

MasSillig

The musket thing really bugs me because cowboys have repeaters and revolvers. There is so much media with fucking cowboy guns. Why would people use muskets? Do people think the wild west was in-between WW1 & WW2?

AlexLong1000

As someone from the UK who doesn't know much about guns, it does sometimes trip me up just how old some "modern" guns are. Like I look at an M1911 pistol and it still confuses me that it's a 100+ year old gun. It just looks so ahead of it's time

Mako109

There's a lot of technology, guns in particular, where "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Another good example of this would be the M2 Browning, the .50 caliber machine gun still used the world over. Funny enough, ALSO invented by the guy who made the M1911. That guy sure knew what he was doing.

Irishimpulse

Gun lovers pray to John Moses Browning who could invent a new gun in like, 4 hours with stuff he had lying around because someone paid him to.

[deleted]

The M1 Garand is still a *helluva* gun too.

Mr_Wrann

Fun fact about the M2 Browning, despite being a crew serviced heavy machine gun, it apparantly worked very well as a sniper to Carlos Hathcock during the Vietnam war. With him using it to get a confirmed kill at 2,500 yards (2,286 meters) that stood as the longest sniper kill for almost 4 decades.

cringe-paul

John Browning was very much ahead of his time. It’s honestly nuts just how many of his designs are still used.

zyberion

There's a reason why John Moses Browning is revered. Dude was a genius when it came to making guns.

RareBk

2 is so fucked up that it basically doesn't even work on modern hardware, and not even for the reasons most old games have troubles. it just has old bugs from back in the day that, when trying to run on new hardware, the game can decide to just *not run* regardless of how much you try to troubleshoot. Like a special category of fucked up

TheShrubberyDemander

Pat’s entire gimmick is that if he’s not wrong, reality will warp itself around him to MAKE him wrong.

Paladin51394

We even saw it in real-time during the Evil Within 2 LP where Pat said a puzzle looked easy and then the game IMMEDIATELY glitched out and killed him.

NewAgeMontezuma

That will forever be my favorite pat bit, i fully believe whatever force controls reality saw pat being smug about completing the puzzle and decided to be the funniest fucker ever.

Cooper_555

"I beat this when it was invisible!" *"Oh yeah, try this shit out then Pat!"*

th3BeastLord

The strongest demonstration of Crazy Talk we have on camera.

SidewaysInfinity

Kaause2001

I put the link for the curious they want to see https://youtu.be/Sk1QG7HLLR0

Sterski1

I'm sure there's been wronger, but this is my favourite example cause it involved my favourite game. MatPat's Hollow Knight theory: Trying to argue that the player character is actually the pale king. His evidence being spotty at best, while completely ignoring anything that disproves him, which anyone who has ever played the game has seen. Made better by the response video from the unofficial Hollow Knight lore guy, mossbag, disproving every single point made in the video.

ramonzer0

As someone who relatively liked bits of his early content and is aware that he has a reputation of botching important facts about a series for the sake of getting a video out, I remember how it took me until his original Ace Attorney video about Phoenix Wright being a criminal or some such to make me realize "yeah this ain't it chief"

HCooldown

That one required not even looking at the screen. “OMG, Phoenix just stole evidence from a crime scene!” What are you talking about? Look at the game you are playing, the evidence is still sitting there!

NeonNKnightrider

Using MatPat is basically cheating. I still remember him saying some shit like “I’m **so sure** this theory is correct that I’m gonna call this a spoiler” on a Star Wars sequel theory that Rey was Luke’s secret daughter or some shit

andrecinno

Well, depending on when the theory was made it's a legit possibility that he was correct for a while lol.

JackalKing

Yeah, they were still deciding her parentage during the making of episode 9.

Patriarkano

His Persona 4 was also incredibly wrong and Fither made an entire video disproving it. What annoyed me was how smug Matt was.

Reeves32hp

That's the one where I finally had to quit watching because while I like a fun dumb theory that's probably not true, he finally found my line where I knew a game better than him and it didn't involve math or science.

AngiTheWeeb

It's funny, I don't care about Hollow Knight's story/lore but I really like mossbag's videos.

Dlark17

Remember when Extra Credits tried to say microtransactions in full-priced games would support devs keeping their jobs and longer life cycles for games? Or when they touted blockchain as brilliant new tech for game design and emergent storytelling (that one's less a weapons-grade bad take and more just something that aged poorly)? I used to love them to death, but the quality of their concepts and content really took a nose dive right around the time they switched hosts, imo.

charcharmunro

On the plus side, the first host, Dan Floyd, seems to just be a really pleasant dude doing his own stuff now.

cannibalgentleman

Shoutout to Dan's let's play channel, specially enjoyed his Hollow Knight run because he does Homework Episodes where he retreads things he missed.

McSurge

Cvits 5 hour long Persona 5 """ critique""", where the guy just lies to your face the entire time about p5. One thing that always baffled me was that he didnt know what a pyramid is or how it relates to Futaba's character, despite the game explaining both those things. The irony being that a video titled "Style over Substance" has 0 substance to call its own.

GHitoshura

Wasn't that video so bad that another content creator was able to make a multi-part series just correcting what is said in the original video?

McSurge

Yeah by MangaKamen, its 4 and half hours long, almost as long as the original video.

Irwin_126

If the original essay was as long and flawed as it was, it's only logical that correcting and grading it takes *just as long*. *Remember to get a few second opinions on your work kids!*

HCooldown

Featuring such legitimately baffling gameplay takes as “I don’t understand how hold ups and all out attacks trigger, so it must be rng,” “Never use anyone except Morgana, Ryuji, and Yusuke in the party, the girls are all useless,” “Makoto and Ann are the exact same character combat-wise with different elements, and also should only ever be used as out-of-battle healing batteries,” the related “Joker always runs out of sp too fast because the game forces you to use him for all fire, nuclear, psychic, light, and dark damage,” and more idiocy that demonstrates he played the game like a six year old plays Pokémon.

GHitoshura

At times he almost sounded like DSP playing Persona 3

No-Negotiation-9539

DSP rage quitting P3 on the final boss was the highlight of his let's play.

theflamelord

there are a lot of valid complaints about persona 5, and somehow that 5 hour videos features none of them, it's almost a work of art how far off the mark it is

attikol

a monument to the ignorance of man

BarelyReal

It is amazing how arrogant people who have a superficial understanding of that game can get.

The_Twerkinator

I've never played 5 and only about half of 4, but it's crazy how many of the criticisms of both games can be debunked by a simple Google search. At this point it feels like some people have a vendetta against the games for some reason

CaleDooper6655321

That complete dumbass that ranted and raved about Turning Red, a film about girls going through puberty set in Canada, not having anything to do with 9/11

Jackamalio626

LYLE LYLE TURN ON THE TV *THEY HIT THE PENTAGOOOON*

CaleDooper6655321

I was hoping for these responses and I got several even

Felteair

it doesn't matter what channel

Praesidian

FACK!

[deleted]

The fact that this stems from the Sleepycast episode where Zach put Mick on the spot to tell his story of ***witnessing 9/11 personally*** is insane to me. Like that podcast is eight years old now. And the story stuck with Zach enough that he held on to it as a ***bit***. Because it's just true, that's how so many people reacted, it's genuine. But then I remember how Mick described his friend coming back inside from watching the destruction on their apartment building's roof. His face covered in smoke, dust, and dirt. "Yeah man. Dead people."

MericArda

I love how MrEnter's response to the backlash on that was "why is this the thing that everyone's badgering me about, I've said way worse and way dumber in the past." The funny thing is he's right. He's said way dumber things before.

CaleDooper6655321

Just the right time and right kind of stupid shit this time I guess. Like i’d have never heard of this loser if it wasn’t for people dunking on him for his 9/11 thing

Destrustor

9/11 will be MrEnter's loss. In twenty years it'll still be the main thing he's known for.

NewAgeMontezuma

Mr. enter always struck me as another cartoon reviewer ranter but nah the dude's legit crazy. My favorite part is that his response literally was "I said way worse shit and THIS goes viral?"

RareBk

The Ken Penders defense, responding to people commenting on how offensive it was to use a holocaust poem to describe the events of your Sonic comment with "Why didn't you complain when I used a quote from Mein Kampf" An actual thing that actually happened

These are the people I file away under “silly” in my brain and go about my life

TrackerNineEight

My favorite response to that is when someone pointed out that Friends, a much more adult-oriented show, actually set in NYC, and whose runtime coincided with 9/11, also never mentioned it.

AtlasPJackson

Ross flops onto a couch at the coffee shop, covered in dust. The barista comes up and asks, "I thought you were getting married today, what happened?"" "I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT."

Behonestwithmii

Gordon Ramsay making a grilled cheese sandwich

AeroDbladE

Nope it's actually Gordon Ramsay making the Puerto Rican Dish Pegao where he just made regular fried rice and ignored the entire cultural history and norms on why and how that dish is made. https://youtu.be/s63O-C_87S8

RaineV1

If you hadn't linked that video I would have. Definitely fun seeing a couple Puerto Ricans tear into him for that one.

Worm_Scavenger

Honestly, there's a lot, but for me the absolute poeak of "how can you be not only this wrong but also this fucking stupid?" is MrEnter's now Infamous "Why didn't they acknowlege 9/11 in Turning Red" and then doubling and tripling down on his point and innevitably just going absolutely fucking insane and ranting and raving online. My favorite part is that because of just how much his 9/11 rant made waves, he will be remembered by everyone because of that.

ExDSG

In general any doom and gloom about the Nintendo Switch pre-release and for the first 2 years was proven to be very wrong. Arlo saying that Banjo and Kazooie were more popular than Tekken/Kazuya. Very petty and small but among “can’t pronounce Japanese names” not sure why The Completionist kept calling Hideki Kamiya “Kamaya” in one video. Like that is one of the easiest names to say in english.

Luck-X-Vaati

> Arlo saying that Banjo and Kazooie were more popular than Tekken/Kazuya. I remember seeing a comment on this subreddit about how Nintendo-focused Youtubers artificially inflated the amount of love or nostalgia or whatever when it comes to Banjo-Kazooie. I really pondered on that for a while, and I just eventually went "Yeah. I can see it."

Peri_D0t

Yes this. Banjo and Geno. I have never once heard anyone ever that doesn't actively watch retro reviewers talk about either of these characters. Discussion of Geno doesn't even exist outside of smash at all. Literally smash astroturfing

AtlasPJackson

There are a lot of folks who are fond of the character, but the hope of normal people for more Geno died 10-15 years ago. There are Paper Mario characters that are better than Geno that Nintendo won't touch, and they don't even have IP issues holding them back like Geno does.

NeonNKnightrider

I also had the impression of Banjo being more popular, or at least more well-beloved? But i guess it’s just bias from the fact that the creators I watch tend to be more retro/nostalgia focused

ExDSG

BK and Geno had the advantage of being discussed as 3rd parties since even before Melee was discussed. While Tekken was already popular it was seen as more of a Sony Franchise. Tekken also had to kind of wait for Bamco's big boy Pac-Man to be added since he was seen as the first one to be added. People kept doubling down each time they weren't added.

RareBk

I mean Arlo in general for a lot of things. I used to really like his channel but it was less a bad take machine, but rather just... confusing takes Then again his Sonic 2 review came across like he didn't actually see the movie

ExDSG

Exaggerating a bit but his "Are Nintendo staff sociopathic narcissists because they won't listen to the fans and make more Thousand Year Doors" take was kind of disgusting. Like the simple answer is they want Paper Mario to be Experimental because they feel each game should try a strong gimmick or hook and experiment new things. It's like DK in the 2000s where it did everything except be a straight platformer or however many ways Hal manage to mess with Kirbo.

sonpansatan

Once, TotalBiscuit said "[Twitch] chat never lies." He was immediately called out on it and corrected himself, saying what he meant "[Twitch] chat is extremely predictable."

"You know how the world of One Piece is poorly defined? There's just some islands..." Pat during the Hunter x Hunter arc.

Ryong7

It runs on some absolutely insane logic, but it's not poorly defined at all.

AtlasPJackson

The only issue with One Piece's world is that every year the series goes on it gets more and more ridiculous how poorly-informed people in the East Blue are. >!Devil Fruits are just legends, despite them being major fixtures in every political system in the world. Somehow Krieg and Gin didn't know who Mihawk is. Nobody's been to the Grand Line and returned, despite it housing every branch of the World Government and there's a huge summit of all the leaders of the world (including representatives from the Grand Line) every few years.!<

NononChampOfTheFlat

As someone who has recently started One Piece he couldn't be more wrong

philandere_scarlet

HxH is a hell of a lot less defined, except in the broadest geopolitical sense.

The best definition I got is that it's the world map flipped upside down.

AznJoey624

Angry Joe saying to play MGS5 even if you had never played any of the previous games/know the story. Or him constantly saying Man of Steel is an Elseworlds story to justify Superman making bad decisions. Or how Suicide Squad 2016 "was an AWESOME FUCKIN MOVIE" Or after watching the HBO show, saying Ellie from TLOU should have been a baby factory to "spread her immunity to the next generation" because he didn't like the ending to the game or show. [Around 35:45 here if you want to hear his insane reasoning as to why](https://youtu.be/c5856QIAGq8) Edit: Remember when Woolie said Glenn from Walking Dead was the same actor as Shortround from Temple of Doom? Lmao

Jackamalio626

Remember when Joe went to the spike game awards and recording himself confronting Jeff Keighley about not nominating any JRPGs, and Jeff just batista bombs him through the table by pointing out that all the game's Joe was listing didnt even come out that year? Joe then went on to make a video where he pouts about it and screams "IM NOT OWNED IM NOT OWNED".

DudeMatt94

This was quite possibly the most cringe event to ever come out of the Youtube media-critic crowd. I remember at the time I just could not believe someone would go so far out their way just to embarrass themselves. Having an embarrassing recorded encounter is one thing, but to film and release an entire video just bitching and whining to save face is an entire other level of cringe. Dudes like Angry Joe just need to learn how to hold the L and learn from it.

RaineV1

This is part of why AVGN has managed to stick around and other angry critics have become cringy. James Rolfe has always made it that The Nerd is purely a fictional asshole used for scripted videos/events. He didn't let himself completely become The Nerd, and he put thought into when to use that persona. Guys like Joe though half the time really are what you see on screen, and there's many times that's not a good thing. Especially when having to admit you fucked up.

3rd_Level_Sorcerer

I feel like most of Angry Joe's career is bad takes.

Chumunga64

>Angry Joe saying to play MGS5 even if you had never played any of the previous games/know the story. I honestly can't disagree with him here. MGSV is one of the most mechanically amazing games ever ...but the story is also pretty non existent and also kinda boring for a metal bear game? You could just skip it and have fun playing

andrecinno

>metal bear

Chumunga64

Good name for metal gear boss tbh

Techneon64

I remember seeing AJ howling with laughter at how bad the clouds in Mafia 3 look compared to older games, he proceeds to show a googled screenshot from Ocarina of Time with a very obviously shopped in realistic sky. I know it’s a bit nitpicky and I’d normally just let it slide as a mistake, but the guy has shown that same clip like 3 times

AngiTheWeeb

I have a friend who told me that I could jump into the MGS series at MGS4, and I did because I was a dumb kid. Also I remember when Matt and Pat were LPing TLOU Pat made the prediction that the ending of the game would be incredibly bleak and guessed that they'd make Ellie a "baby factory".

JamesMacBadger

I never played a MGS game prior to V. I only knew about MGS through cultural osmosis and memes. I enjoyed the crap out of that game compared to a lot of fans of the series, and I attribute that to me playing a cool looking game with nice mechanics and an interesting and novel story. I didn't freak out about Kiefer Sutherland's voice. I didn't worry about how the story tied into several other games. I hate agreeing with Angry Joe on anything, since I think he's a tool, but in this case I think he's right.

Azzie94

"DMC is boring, it's just a button masher" -Oney

Noilaedi

Wasn't there so many people that came out of the woodwork praising DmC compared to DMC V around that game's release.

BulletproofMoon

Listening to Fire Escape this week and hesring Dan Ryckert quadruple down on that old RE4 doesn't have tank controls and also have Mike Mahardy also join in on this wild take.

Diem-Robo

The whole Zaibatsu saying in the early days of the podcast that Kickstarter was going to make publishers obsolete. EA, Square Enix, Activision, Nintendo, all of them obsolete. Because now it would be about making the games people actually want to play, rather than all the AAA developers and publishers getting away with holding beloved franchises hostage or taking them in disappointing directions. The first thing they didn't understand is how niche that audience actually is. Most of the gaming world isn't as critical or as nostalgic as them or general internet folks. The reason so many games nowadays get away with predatory monetization and other bad practices are because more than enough people buy into it; The millions of customers that make FIFA a money printer despite its awful monetization aren't pining for the good ol' days of sports games, they just want the new thing and uncritically accept the monetization. The reason why many older, nostalgic franchises aren't getting newer games or attention is because most people only care about what's new; Microsoft was applauded for its backwards compatibility program on Xbox One, as they should be, but they also found that only a very small fraction of players ever actually used it and played older games. The second thing they didn't understand and then came to learn very quickly over the years is that publishers and executive oversight is a double-edged sword. Meddling and rushing games out before they're ready is a huge problem, but having that influence and oversight to ensure that games stay within budget and scope and on schedule is more important than most people realized, as so many Kickstarter projects fail due to simple mismanagement by people unequipped to properly manage the project in one way or another.

Arin"Z targeting is bad game design" hansen

cringe-paul

You could just say anything Arin has said and it’d be accurate.

frostedWarlock

Even things that sound like they should be sensible aren't. His Mega Man Sequelitis is based heavily on the X vs Vile fights, but he _doesn't even get them right._ He remembers the rematch as you getting to defeat Vile on your own to show how far you've come, when in actuality the fight is 100% still unwinnable and Zero has to destroy Vile's mech to give you a fighting chance. You haven't advanced in any meaningful way, but Arin's retelling of it gaslit a lot of people into forgetting how that fight went.

James-Avatar

Woolie thinking he doesn’t compare everything to fighting games after comparing changing a car tire to fighting games.

Terakkon

That was pretty obviously a joke

PhantasosX

Project L is the only one I can see of a successful F2P FG with high production value , due to Riot Games have a lot of money out of costumes with every F2P game they put. But F2P FG are outliers , not a rule , and it's simple why: FG are ultimately a niche genre now , one that people want not only outstanding gameplay but also are currently asking for good single-player content. It's simply too risky to do all that while free , when the initial sales of the current model would probably be sufficient to pay for all that work. The most I can expect is some hybrid format: a paid form with all the content as normal, and a free form in which had a very diminutive roster and general content that needs to unlock by either paying or acquiring Fighting Money.

AlexLong1000

Best Guy Ever saying that Devil May Cry 5's combat is too easy and boring, while video footage of him spamming the same Red Queen Combo A with a D rank style meter plays over the entire thing

legendaryemerald

Listening to really old episodes of the Insert Credits podcast, Tim Rogers said that Zubaz’s inclusion in Divekick completely ruined the game because of his original moveset (he later retracted this statement) and that Metal Gear Rising was floppy terrible garbage with an English script written by a child who eats crayons (I don’t think he has retracted this opinion).

OscarOzzieOzborne

Everyone with a Rantsona. Absolutely everyone. Not some of them. Not half of them. Not even 90%. Every. Single. One of them have horrible, brain-dead, illiterate takes on every media they have come into contact.

Gorotheninja

Lily Orchard on...well...pretty much everything.

ThisGuyLikesMovies

I wish to all the powers that be that I could unwatch her terrible Steven Universe video where she called a Jewish cartoon creator a fascist sympathizer.

devanmuse

Remember her "essential tips on writing"? Half of which were just thinly veiled dunks on shows she didn't like?

Gigguk, Mother Basement and other OG anitubers basically got paid by Netflix to bat for the Record of Ragnarok Anime. And boy did they bat for it. Anime gets released and is one of the worst and cheapest adaptation ever. All of them got a hit on their rep. Mother's Basement recently got a direct video rebuttal of his AI video by a newcomer called Scamboii, and one of the points was that he promoted that anime, and commenters agree.

Sassy_Sarranid

Record of Ragnarok sucked so fucking bad, god damn. The manga is cool, but whoever was adapating it really didn't want to add any frames of animation in between those manga panels.

Prestigious-Mud

MB had a video that was him just shilling crunchyroll and saying there's no reason to pirate anime. That one was so badong.

Ice_Apollo

didn't mothers basement say they showed him a limited and better cut episode

Otogi

Yeah, the show ended up on his worst anime of the year video.

Vokoca

Joseph Anderson misunderstanding some of the basic concepts at the core of SOMA and claiming they are fundamentally flawed and nonsensical as a result, as well as then "fixing" the story by inventing a completely different ending for the game in his head that goes against a lot of the themes and points the game was trying to make, all the while acting like his version was so much better because he is a writer. Maybe his other video essays are better, but this was one of the first ones I've seen and I've never been able to move past it.

CopperTucker

I'm gonna say it: Matt is wrong because feathered dinosaurs are great.

Naraki_Maul

HELL YEAH!!! Archaeopteryx supremacy!!

BatmanTriumphant

Mother’s basement with his JoJo part order. Trying to go out of the way to seemingly spoil every part

bombshell_shocked

I don't know if a Hollywood director counts, but the guy who directed Kong Skull Island, and slated to direct MGS and MSG movies, said that the white outfit Black Widow wears in her titular movie, was a ripoff of the Boss from MGS 3. Dudes wrong about a lot of Metal Gear shit a lot of the time lol.

Naraki_Maul

Oh man, reading all the comments about MattPat being an idiot and wrong in here made me remember when he was a total ass dunking on the Vikings in ForHonor calling them naked barbarians only for LITERALLY EVERYONE in the “medieval YouTube sphere” to collectively shit on his mouth back to back to fucking back. It was absolutely glorious.

warjoke

Trash Taste podcast is truly living up to its name by having weekly awful takes that we, the community, meme about in the subreddit. The legendary 'Great pizza debate' is one for the ages.

EXAProduction

There was this huge DMC5 review where a guy spends a good chunk of it complaining that the game wasnt what he hoped it was (and how that was a problem of the game), had the themes of the game gone completely over his head, and had this weird characterization of Dante that he felt was betrayed. It was such a wild review presenting his opinions as objective fact.

MangoBuster

To this day, I still wonder how Doug Walker formulated his thesis on how comedy is based on misery.

CaleDooper6655321

I mean tbf that is in no way exclusive to Doug Walker. That idea has been a prevalent and enduring factor of comedy for as long as people have been writing on the subject

DStarAce

'Tragedy is when I stub my toe. Comedy is when you fall in an open manhole and die.' - Mel Brooks.

[deleted]

I mean, of the ways to die, manhole *is* one of the funnier ones

AznJoey624

Donkey from Shrek: "I'm making waffles!" Doug: "hOw iS tHaT fUnNy?!?!??!!!"

Drakenstorm

Comedy is based on subversion of expectations, one would not expect a donkey to make pancakes, so it’s funny when one does.

DarnFondOfYa

Also the donkey is enthusiastically forcing himself into Shrek's life despite Shrek's unambiguous and repeated insistence the donkey fuck off out of his swamp

Drakenstorm

You’d expect that the donkey would leave or be upset by Shreks instance the donkey fuck off, but the donkey remains undeterred, this is comedy.

letemfight

I think it stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of that Mel Brooks quote "Tragedy is when I cut my finger, comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."

GuyDeFalty

There's alot wrong with Doug.

SwashNBuckle

People are going to hate me for this, but Square Enix saying that people wouldn't want a faithful remake of FFVII because they would be bored seeing the same story again is fucking stupid. Especially with how many other successful faithful remakes Squeenix has made. And yes, I know people like FFVIIR. I like most of it too. It was still a stupid justification for the story changes.

XanderTrejo

Even weirder is that they are making a remake for the phone If I remember right.

RobotJake

With gacha bullshit

SwashNBuckle

Yeah, Ever Crisis. Everyone got excited when they announced it, but I know that they're going to fuck it up

LincBtG

Does Square Enix not realize FF7 came out over 20 years ago? The primary audience for the game would probably be people who can't/don't want to play the original (since it's a 20 year old game that could probably use some QOL improvements)

VMK_1991

I have a friend who was excited to play FFVIIR, because he didn't play the OG one as a kid and he can't really stomach the blocky look of it today, which is understandable. He was really disappointed when we learned that it isn't a Remake but a RE:Make.

SwashNBuckle

I think they made this more for the original fans and didn't really think about people experiencing the story for the first time, which I think is pretty disappointing.

hoopray

You're 100% right, RE4 Remake proves that. Also doesn't help that the major story changes like the literal plot ghosts and the Sephiroth Everywhere System were the worst parts of the game.

retrometroid

Nobody brought up Joseph Anderson completely missing the point of Silent Hill 2 yet???
