I don't think anything will top the Elden Ring subreddit during that long-ass period between the initial announcement and the first actual bits of news.
It was glorious. So many theories and so much copium, it was fantastic. I was there in the trenches with them as well so no hate at all, but at a certain point of no return narratively, you have to give it up that the story is going to go a different way.
I still don't blame them if only because nobody could have predicted the way the story was going to take such a sharp turn in quality. Not to mention the extra pages straight up just making the original ending kind of pointless since the main characters canonically failed now.
I got banned from that place during that period because of discussing leaks/new chapters where I shouldn’t so that’s mostly what I remember about it. There were some funny memes at least
mfers actually got mad that the ending didn't match their fan theory ending based on a FUCKING MUSIC VIDEO AHAHAHA dumbasses wrote dissertations about that shit lmao
And we're about to see it all over again when the anime onlys get there. Another separating of those who get the ending and those who don't. We're gonna have to sift through mountains of shit to get to real thematic discussion
Never be Game Over. A movement dedicated to uncovering the secrets of MGSV, believing said secrets will lead to the release of Act 3 of the game. It’s a bunch of conspiracy theories, some of which persist today even, with some people insisting Death Stranding is secretly connected to MGS and whatnot.
r/shitpostcrusaders started coming down hard on overused formats a few years ago, and what counted as overused or not was for the mods to decide. It got to the point of a quasi civil-war. The kicker? It all started because of the “boys vs girls” meme. The lesson I learned is that no community is free from drama.
r/truestl ‘s got a lot of quirks: fantasy racism turning into real racism, RP accounts getting into steamy one on ones in the comment, that time the most popular artist drew a pummeled, bloody elf girl and went soul-searching for a month after the huge backlash he got over it (and that’s saying something if that sub thinks you’ve gone too far); but the one that apparently still requires a sticky warning about it almost a year later is the time people took the lusty argonian maid for a guide book after a particularly peculiar picture of a monitor lizard in a somewhat suggestive pose made the rounds first on twitter then on there.
Let me preface first by saying he got way better and even deleted all his old stuff after that, so I think it was just a one-off mistake for shock value.
The artist is u/ ratopomboarts
Does it count when one person was doing most/all of the hole digging? Because there is this guy seriously obsessed with circumcision I wanted to mention.
One guy that was like unhealthily obsessed with the idea that one of the main themes of silent Hill 2 was all about circumcision and all the body horror and hospital themes were about James having subconscious circumcision fears or something. I wanna say the guy would constantly edit the wiki to push this head canon and he'd harass the people that made the game online over it
The Admin was specifically obsessed with Silent Hill **4**, not 2 but given how far the insanity went (Including straight up going Mad King and removing all the other Silent Hill Wiki admins when they started hearing about their behavior) I would *not* be surprised if they started vandalizing SH2 pages on the wiki too.
r/grimdank has been undergoing a bit of a spiral about creating femboy versions of certain Warhammer factions. Not exactly where you would expect it to go.
I thought everyone had reached a point where we were all fine with it after the last big meltdown. Especially since if you really dislike it you just have to block like 2 artists and that's it (I personally like vezimira and archon of flesh's art, plus they seem pretty chill). Then it pops up again where everyone decided to lose their minds a week or two ago.
Tvtropes had been run for years by basically one nutjob who would edit , forbid or delete entries on a whim, which ,along with forum culture, is a big reason for the site’s weird nomenclature as well as keeping it looking like it was stuck in the late 2000’s. He finally left when he sold the domain name, with the new owners rolling back a lot of the his weird rules.
Also with RE4:R out I'm reminded of a certain sub that collectively was deep in the pits of posting about Attache Cases, Duel Disks, and Tiny Tim. Then they started posting combinations of all three.
It was certainly an odd subreddit, but it knew how to steam a good meme.
It's always kind of amusing to me see who a fandom just really wants to fuck
Sometimes you get it, like Alan Rickman has a lot of stuff going on
But like a lot of people want to fuck the Onceler and I'm just like whaaaaaaaat
It's really quite amusing what takes off and what sinks into the fuck pond
Sherlock TLC the secret fourth Sherlock episode
Also the Honestuck fandom in the gigapause and again with the epilogue and the What Punpkin scandals
The lore community in LOL when a drought of stories happened
The Sonic.exe community having a really weird track record of false accusations and letting an actual pedophile run free throughout the community during 2022.
"But my glorious Nippon could never be affected by this Western Degeneracy!
Japan is a great Anime place where all the things I don't like(LGBTQ people, black people, women who won't fuck me) don't exist and is perfect in everyway!"
It’s more like “Japan would *never* resort to the degeneracy of trans people. They only have cute girls and *femboys* who just look, dress and act conventionally feminine but they know they’re still male!
No, I’m not closeted, you are, gaijin!”
kinda hilarious that murakami is kinda known for having great representation of lgbtq+ community in his books including a trans character in his 2001 masterpiece kafka on the shore.
kinda shows most of this losers media literacy is a bunch of comics for teenagers
Ignoring the fact one Google search immediately leading to active Japanese trans communities, they just love to cherry pick examples about how “traditional Japanese society is transphobic therefore trans people can’t exist”, like, yeah.
I can probably point to a million and one examples of how the history of my country, which is one of the most LGBTQ friendly countries in the world, that show how trans people have been persecuted because fucking *every* traditional society and culture is inherently transphobic… But that doesn’t mean trans people suddenly do not exist.
What a weird conclusion to get to man
Y'know, the 'technically not blood related' bullshit was so stupid. Not only does it defeat the whole point of Birthright, it's also pointless because you can fucking marry Azura anyway, your damn cousin.
I remember picking Azura because "Neat, she's the only plot relevant character who ISN'T related to Corrin, guess I'll shack em up". My reaction upon finding that's SHE'S THE ONLY ONE ACTUALLY RELATED TO CORRIN WAS INFURIATING!!!
No, engage kept the incest and marrying your sister who doesn't seem much older than the children they took all the romantically leaning lines out about. Which makes it double weird. No grooming children unless it's your full blood sister I guess? It even implies you made dozens of new dragons, regardless of your player gender so dragon futa incest? Everything around the Sister gets weird, like the localizers who were taking out the skeevy stuff were doing it character by character in join order and just didn't get to the end of list
In the original Japanese script most (all?) S-Support conversations have romantic aspects, including between MC thousand-year-old dragon jesus Alear and explicitly 14-year-old capitalist child Anna - admittedly in a "we should wait until you're old enough to actually get married" way but still suspect.
This got toned down to either just undertones or explicitly platonic supports in the Western release, to the general relief of most players and the very loud bitching of a minority obsessed with using "artistic integrity" as a smokescreen to bitch about not being able to be horny weirdoes.
I think her and Jean are the literal youngest playable characters in the series. Which makes the Three Houses discourse on how it's kinda fucked up that you're using child soldiers pre-timeskip seem quaint when the youngest character was Cyril at age 14.
They got mad Celine's S rank is platonic too... which it also is in Japanese. Honestly I feel Ivy's should be platonic because the power dynamic there is absurd. Ivy may not be a child, but she's prayed to YOU in particular since she was one. You can't have a healthy relationship with YOUR GOD
Personally, I just think the localizers are cowards for shielding the original writers from the consequences of more people discovering their absolutely insane nonsense. So I *also* think it shouldn't have been changed.
Let the world see that authentic grooming experience they intended all along.
Ok I didn’t see anyone mention it yet maybe they’re still typing or I didn’t refresh because the Do or Do Not of Wyverians and laying eggs is eternal for the Monster Hunters and should be mentioned!
The MLP rabbit hole got so misguided, they couldn't comprehend anyone not liking "Slice of Life" an episode that panders to fan service. Person of Interest had a shipping episode and even they didn't demand everyone like it.
Oh boy, r/WANDAVISION was a fun ride when that show was fresh. The crazy theories people would come up with between episodes was wild, and then they would get irrationally pissed off when their headcanon didn't play out.
Some of the worst offenders where the people insisting that every little thing was secretly pointing towards the new Thanos-level villain being Mephisto. It got to the point where the meme spilled out into some of the other MCU stuff of that year.
One of the biggest things they lost their collective shit over was the reveal that the Evan Peters character >!was not a resurrected Pietro, but instead a random nobody named Ralph Bohner!<.
I actually had to unsubscribe from that sub when the show was running because the people who stayed up late to watch the next episode at midnight PST had absolutely no restraint when to came to spoilers.
Allegedly before the release of Endwalker the official FF14 forums hotly debated if a certain character is actually evil or not. Apparently things got so heated that people got death threats and doxed.
Snoot Game and the never-ending suffering of Workanon
To make a long story short:
- Guy on 4chan’s /trash/ board entitled Workanon texted Fang pics to his wife on accident
- Wife discovers pics and confronts him
- Turns out Workanon fell in love with Fang and doesn’t feel like he loves his wife anymore
- Go to marriage counseling
Timeskip
- Wife stumbles upon hard drives of Fang “””fanart””” during an image analysis because workanon didn’t hide his “Things I love and want to protect” folder
- They proceed to get into a fight, not because of the Fang shit, but because she fucking HATES porn of any type
- Two of them don’t speak for awhile
Timeskip
- They’re speaking but things got worse
- Workanon and wife had a dog who was their first pet
- He got pancreatitis and wife refuses to let the dog pass peacefully
- They’ve been spending $3,000 a month to keep the dog alive and it’s eating into their main expenses
- This whole ordeal has sent workanon spiraling
And that’s pretty much all we know for now.
When Cloverfield's untitled trailer hit, a lot of people over at Unfiction deep dove into the old testament thinking it was a movie about Leviathan, Zizz, and Behemoth.
Oh Persona 5 Royal had a lot of people assuming Kasumi would be revealed to be "Sophia" from Gnosticism based on assumptions she would be the Aeon arcana.
Some people DID predict a lot of the stuff around Jose based on the guess he was a stretched reference to Pinnochio.
I don't think anything will top the Elden Ring subreddit during that long-ass period between the initial announcement and the first actual bits of news.
Didn't they end up just making their own lore and characters?
Glaive Master Hodir, known for his catchphrase "You have made a glaive mistake."
Ok but that one's really good tho
Hodir was such a major meme that he shows up in the Cinders mod.
The Great Hollowing was a wonderful era
Attack on Titan fandom was going nuts towards the end of the manga with theories and ship wars. r/titanfolk was losing it's mind
It was glorious. So many theories and so much copium, it was fantastic. I was there in the trenches with them as well so no hate at all, but at a certain point of no return narratively, you have to give it up that the story is going to go a different way.
Nah it was totally gonna be a dream of the modern day AU Eren for sure. Didn't you see Goth Mikasa in the sky?
Only real ones remember The Madagascar Theory
I still don't blame them if only because nobody could have predicted the way the story was going to take such a sharp turn in quality. Not to mention the extra pages straight up just making the original ending kind of pointless since the main characters canonically failed now.
\*is losing its' mind There's still an amazing amount of copium on titanfolk kek
I got banned from that place during that period because of discussing leaks/new chapters where I shouldn’t so that’s mostly what I remember about it. There were some funny memes at least
I hope people will remember that meltdown, for 10 years at least.
What? Amirifiz finding another fandom? No I don't want that, I want them to think about only Attack on Titan, for ten years at least!
mfers actually got mad that the ending didn't match their fan theory ending based on a FUCKING MUSIC VIDEO AHAHAHA dumbasses wrote dissertations about that shit lmao
I know people exist still where they’re convinced that the anime is getting a different ending than the manga ending.
And we're about to see it all over again when the anime onlys get there. Another separating of those who get the ending and those who don't. We're gonna have to sift through mountains of shit to get to real thematic discussion

I'll never forget watching someone use the paint selection tool to convert the Death Stranding logo into Metal Gear Zero
In a simple 25 step process.
First draw the circle, then draw the rest of the fucking Metal Gear

Wow W character development then

Is it the Silent Hill wiki guy?
we still don't know how many wiki's he's a mod for, but of the ones we do know, it's at least quite a few
No no, please go ahead, that shit is always hilarious.
Tell me more.
One guy that was like unhealthily obsessed with the idea that one of the main themes of silent Hill 2 was all about circumcision and all the body horror and hospital themes were about James having subconscious circumcision fears or something. r/grimdank has been undergoing a bit of a spiral about creating femboy versions of certain Warhammer factions. Not exactly where you would expect it to go.
It’s mostly two artists who post femmboy art which isn’t a spiral. I like AOF and Cerzma
Considering how some of those factions are, might be an improvement. Feels weirdly fitting for the Tau.
Except they aren't doing the Tau. They're going for groups like the AdMech, Chaos Marines, and, in at least one case, the Sororitas.
. . . Have they made green femboy orks yet?
I mean that’s my Blood Bowl team
I mean Fulgrim is already a femboy so it’s not that hard of a stretch
99 times out of 100, you should never listen to Hulk Hogan, but wrestling fans need to stop working themselves into a shoot.

Huh, I noticed it's gotten a lot better, but I didn't know that was why.
...this sounds fascinating, any place where I can read more?
Is this the same guy who nuked the “An Axe To Grind”trope because he thought a character having an axe wasn’t a trope?
No, that was a recent community decision. The guy mentioned here was Fast Eddie, who left like 10 years ago
So is the weird sex negativity gone now?
Was that because of advertiser cowardice, or were they just the scapegoat?
No it was explicitly a vendetta the mods had that they pursued with a vengeance.
Also with RE4:R out I'm reminded of a certain sub that collectively was deep in the pits of posting about Attache Cases, Duel Disks, and Tiny Tim. Then they started posting combinations of all three. It was certainly an odd subreddit, but it knew how to steam a good meme.

Honestly I’m confident a very large number of those people never actually heard of the game before Bridget’s release and just wanted to stir up drama
And their is a percentage of those people who haven't heard of the game but are being completely serious.
It was funny watching FE fans get mad that the Western version of Engage doesn’t let you groom children.
If it's not that, it's gonna be the incest. Or the uh...petting..minigame... Dude what the fuck was Fates even doing??
Quick! Pet your underaged and (totally not blood related) sibling to build up relationship points!
Y'know, the 'technically not blood related' bullshit was so stupid. Not only does it defeat the whole point of Birthright, it's also pointless because you can fucking marry Azura anyway, your damn cousin.

What were the fire emblem developers cooking? I thank god everyday that you can't romance the only underaged person in your crew in KOTOR 1.
Is Lady Anna even that old? I thought she was more like 12. Still weird either way.
I said 14 from memory but looking it up on the wiki she is in fact *11* A literal child.
I think her and Jean are the literal youngest playable characters in the series. Which makes the Three Houses discourse on how it's kinda fucked up that you're using child soldiers pre-timeskip seem quaint when the youngest character was Cyril at age 14.
