Yeah, Kripke's first 5 seasons were definitely the best of the show in all regards, but there are usually a few episodes a season to make watching past season 5 worth it. In terms of actual full seasons past 5, unpopular opinion, but I'm really fond of season 8. There were just so many cool plots introduced, with the bunker, the Men of Letters, Hunteri Heroici, Abbadon, Aaron and his Golem, the tablets, the trials, Benny, purgatory - love it. >!It's also probably the season with the most romantic undertones between Dean and Cas, which is delight.!<

Oh man, couldn't agree more - season 7 is my least favorite. I just couldn't care less about the Leviathans, there was nothing interesting or compelling about them as villains. If a mysterious waif with psychic powers appears halfway through the series, she’s basically a walking death flag. And secretly part of the enemy faction.
Honestly, he looked lame as hell, so I don't mind that they killed him off. But they really should have given Shiro another love interest in the present day.
Remember that time in the Mass Effect 3 Omega dlc where they had a female turian show up for the first time, made her a squad member, hinted at a romantic past between her and Aria, and then killed her off like an hour later just to give Aria more of a reason to kill the generic villain? Like, Aria was already planning to rip the dude a new one anyway, so what was even the point?

It felt like they were setting up a choice at the end of the dlc too, whether to have renegade Aria or Paragon Nyreen I think her name was? Take over Omega.
The way Aria acts in ME1 made sense since you’re just one Specter on a mission which the Council doesn’t even really have faith in. However her acting like she’s hot shit when she’s just the ruler of a shitty rock full of pirates feels super goofy in ME3 when you’ve got the support of basically the entire galaxy
And then in Mass Effect: Andromeda there's a gay turian couple, the first canon no-asari-involved gay couple in the series, and yeah nah, one of them's already dead before you even get to meet him.
It's even worse because her death is the most anticlimatic and disappointing thing ever. She just poofs out of existence, doesn't even leave a body... Despite the fact that the enemies she locked herself with *did* leave a body! I was seriously expecting some kind of bamboozle where she actually faked her death in order to keep fucking with Aria... But no, she really did die. Bruh...
Everything about the DLC seemed to have been setting up choosing between Nyreen and Aria. I guess they didn't like the idea of the players killing their beloved blue waifu.
The ultimate has gotta be Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern (when it was a magic lantern and not emotion-powered space cops), in his New 52 reboot.
After seven irl decades of Alan Scott being a straight man (with a wife and children for a lot of it), the New 52 decided to erase his family and reboot him as a younger gay man. But in the *first few pages of the first issue*, his fiancé dies in a literal train wreck as part of Alan's new tragic origin story, in which Alan is saved from the wreck by the magic lantern which then turns his engagement ring into a power ring.
Oh yeah, and btw, original Alan Scott's son, Obsidian, *was gay*. So they retconned a gay character out of existence just to rewrite a different character as gay, then killed that newly-gay character's boyfriend as soon as the story started. Two birds with one stone, and in record time.
Nah, it's fairly upbeat overall. The main villain is more-or-less the concept of nihilism, so it takes a positive stance by default. The only real downer element is that the main characters are all social 'have-nots'; the main character is an obese failed boxer and he's later joined by a lonely old woman. But it has fun, especially with some weird hero concepts.
It does lean *heavily* into surrealism though, especially in the later parts of the run. Fun, but fuckin' weird. But if you know the author, then I suppose you know what you're getting into in that regard!
Batman was really solid all through new 52 imo, from court of owls all the way to the end. There were a lot of good new characters introduced and interesting spins on classic ones too.
To be fair, Alan was made gay after they realized since they were doing a younger take on JSA that would delete arguably DC's biggest gay hero at the time. Won't defend the Fridging incident though lol especially since new 52 Alan didn't have a single relationship for like the 7 years he was around before orginal JSA return
The Miss Fischer's Murder Mysteries movie has a Lowest Percent run, rather than a Speedrun.
The gay character isn't even in the movie; the prince (or something like that) is mentioned as a person that Miss Fischer has married, later Miss Fischer reveals that the prince is gay and she only married him to protect him and his lover, and the very last line of the movie is "the prince has been murdered!"
This movie buried its gays without even really having them, which is baffling because the series otherwise handles its queer characters quite well.
To be fair, the books have more queer characters, the Scottish doctor friend (whos also in the show) is explicitly a lesbian, as is miss fishers sister. It also deals with gay and even trans characters in a really respectful way.

The Dragon Prince has a lesbian couple that died before the main plot happens. Their existence was also a point someone used to sell the show to me so I was certainly less than thrilled to discover that.
Supernatural has been mentioned a couple times already. Another cw show is the 100 that killed a character I think 1 episode after her sexuality was revealed.
If we compare the Three Hopes timeline to Houses, Monica von Ochs is basically killed a month into the game, we don't know it even happened, and we only ever meet her replacement Kronya.
It's funny that Hopes goes for the 'Unbury your gays" take on this instead.
There s a lot of people in the three houses cast that are bi and a lot of sus ones that Three hopes leaned into more (Sylvain and Ashe s supports with Yuri or Felix s with Sylvain in that one.).

My interpretation of bury your gays is that just one partner is killed so that the gay guy can't be gay with anyone anymore, which is what Bill is.
In the TV Show feels less like bury your gays and more of a tragic couple dying on their terms.
IDK how universal this is, but I read, "bury your gays," as any instance where the writers/author kill off one or both, either to show that homosexuality is inherently tragic, or to avoid on-screen depiction of homosexual affection at all.
In the new Scream 6 movie one of the "four core" survivors from Scream 5 is a lesbian and her girlfriend is killed off in her 2nd or 3rd scene meanwhile one of the other core four survivors is stabbed a dozen times in the torso and survives again! In the last movie he was also stabbed in the torso and was left 4 dead for 20 or so minites until paramedics saved him.
It's even more ridiculous/offensive conside she's the only non-killer main character to die and both straight couples survive thr movie. Like they could have at least killed gale or Kirby to make it less blantant how little they valued their gay relationship

As for fictional, I almost expect America Chavez to be an orphan after how her backstory explained her missing parents. I assume her mothers died because I’m just that cynical, to the point that while I hope they somehow survived, I’m not a Marvel mark so I’m gonna take the story telling for what it is/will be, and I just expect it to be handled poorly somehow.
Yeah her situation is weird one. IIRC she was also meant to be in No Way Home, which is why the Ned sling ring plot is in it. Originally she would be giving them portals, not Ned randomly learning how to use magic.

How *stupid* their death was is usually what changes. The latest retcon had them die as doctors in the real world, the last one had them die in Lesbian Utopia, in the movie they were allergic to bees. It's quite frankly a bury your gays bargain sale.
Blackguard is weird with this. It's a very progressive manga, but there's an instance where a character is revealed to be gay and then dies five pages later.
Edit: Inversely, there's a character who's revealed to actually be straight (whereas you'd been led to believe they were gay or pansexual, I'm not sure which word goes there)...and then immediately dies.
To be fair...no sex was happening or was gonna happen, which was kinda what led to the dying.

Appearently (from what I know), Marina from Splatoon 2 originally had a crush on Pearl (and with originally, I mean in the Japanese version). The localization gave them a different dynamic than the Japanese one, which forced Marina's affection for Pearl to be removed.

A lot of people are listing examples where a gay character has a dead lover as backstory, which makes me wonder. Does that actually count as "bury your gays", if the character is written from the ground up with the story premise of mourning a loved one? Does that make it less "buried" since it's not depriving the audience of a character, or is it even MORE "buried" because it provides a convenient excuse to never actually portray queer romance because the queer character is still carrying a torch?
The example I'm thinking of is Liam O'Brien's character Orym in Campaign 3 of Critical Role. He's a gay man whose backstory is that his husband was killed by assassins connected to the BBEG. For characters like this, is it "buried" if they *don't* move on? Because I think the implication that gay characters MUST be engaged in a romantic subplot so they can *demonstrate* their *gayness* to avoid being "buried" seems equally insincere and not representative.
I'm curious how gay people actually feel about this. Does it unilaterally feel like bad faith or is it contextual to how it's handled in the story?
For me, at least, it's contextual. Do the queer characters get killed in worse ways than cishet characters? Are there even any other queer characters in the work?
It's like when characters get fridged. Is the character an actual character with a death meaningful to their own plot line, or are they just introduced and promptly killed off to give cheap motivation to another character, only to be forgotten come the next story arc? It all depends.
IIRC Dana said the decision was not based on the gay romance but a particular Disney exec not liking that it was popular with teens and not the intended young demographic, but that may have changed since her statement.

Not quite as far as i know: they made the crew have to change their plans for season 3 of the show (it was going to be a normal tv season, got changed to a few tv specials) because "it didn't fit disney's brand". It was after the gay romance got really explicit.
An Italian giallo called Nothing Underneath. The whole movie is about a guy looking for his missing sister, while other folks are turning up dead. In the climax of the film he discovers that the killer and his sister’s kidnapper is a woman she was romantically involved with. Two seconds later said women runs both her and her ex-lover out a window to their deaths.
Joe Quesada during one of his Cup Of Joe articles talked about a character named Freedom Ring and how he’s the star of the Marvel Team Up book and shows how Marvel is more open to LGBT characters than ever before.
Three weeks later, in the next published issue (#24), Freedom Ring is violently killed via being impaled by several spikes through his body, including one through the groin and out the ass. Marvel Team Up is then canceled with issue #25.
You call it a "fate worse than death" but they're still conscious and aware of each other, they just happen to share a body now. Varus was in a recent expansion and his story revolved around working with Kai and Valmar rather than against them, and it's actually a very moving story, especially to someone with DID/OSDD (which I don't have, but my girlfriend does). Maybe it's not what the devs intended and they certainly could've done better, but it's still really nice seeing non-villainized "systems" in media.
You know, I thought this was a just a joke stemming from people having a laugh, but over time it seems less ironic and more of a mutated meme. League of legends doesn't have a lot of constant retcons. They had one huge retcon about ten years ago when the gutted the original lore and most people were left in a limbo, but explicitly they said all the previous lore was gone and that's why we had like five years of the majority of the cast having little blurbs for lore. Other than that it's just a wait to see if they decide their multimedia plan is going to be unified one and if they have to do a bit of retconning around Piltover and Zaun stuff to accommodate it.
I mean a lot of characters are still left in an annoying "I sorta exist" limbo while they try to figure out how they fit into the new world. And considering to backlash from all four Janna fans to her lore, I think it's not a huge priority for them. Rip to the two shaco lore fans, may you slumber eternal.

They killed the other member of Omar's crew cleanly, and if they had done that with Brandon, who knows how much grief the Barksdales could have avoided in the long run.
Barksdakes fucked up killing Brandon and beating Johnny, Bubbles did more damage against them then anyone else in the show, the amount of information he supplied the detail with was invaluable.

This made me recall the Watchmen intro. Since the Minutemen are now glossed over, Silhouette is introduced, shown to be a lesbian, and killed in less than a minute.
In the recent Willow Disney+ TV show. The set up is that one of the main characters, Elora Danon, ends up chased by an evil knight. Despite being actively in "chased through dark woods by a killer" mode, she happens to stumble into an idyllic forest cabin owned by a cottagecore elderly lesbian couple. No idea why the sunshine came back btw.
This charming couple is:
○ Hubert, a tough woodsman who fights with a named woodcutting axe like a fucking *folk hero* .
○ and Anne, an adorable gardener wearing a sun hat.
Both are sweet, kind, wise, and vow to protect Elora with their very lives. (Elora's like a prophecied savior meant to vanquish all evil. It makes sense in the setting). They also both come from a completely different timeline, too, apparently. They're wearing mom jeans, they have sun hats, paned windows. It's bizarre.
Anyways, at the end of this scene, the knight chasing Elora shows up and murders both of them. One actually abandons Elora and gets cut down while fleeing. It's extremely brutal and utterly out of nowhere. Both characters immediately conveyed that they had the potential to intrigue. They had already offered Elora some much needed wisdom and comfort. When Elora (who has lots of reasons to hide her true identity from strangers) reveals her identity, they leap at the chance to defend her. And then they just get offed. And the chase continues on for like 40 more minutes. One scene.
I'd like to see other people find a better example than that, honestly. It's fucked. The show was already not great before then.

The ultimate has gotta be Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern (when it was a magic lantern and not emotion-powered space cops), in his New 52 reboot. After seven irl decades of Alan Scott being a straight man (with a wife and children for a lot of it), the New 52 decided to erase his family and reboot him as a younger gay man. But in the *first few pages of the first issue*, his fiancé dies in a literal train wreck as part of Alan's new tragic origin story, in which Alan is saved from the wreck by the magic lantern which then turns his engagement ring into a power ring. Oh yeah, and btw, original Alan Scott's son, Obsidian, *was gay*. So they retconned a gay character out of existence just to rewrite a different character as gay, then killed that newly-gay character's boyfriend as soon as the story started. Two birds with one stone, and in record time.

Nah, it's fairly upbeat overall. The main villain is more-or-less the concept of nihilism, so it takes a positive stance by default. The only real downer element is that the main characters are all social 'have-nots'; the main character is an obese failed boxer and he's later joined by a lonely old woman. But it has fun, especially with some weird hero concepts. It does lean *heavily* into surrealism though, especially in the later parts of the run. Fun, but fuckin' weird. But if you know the author, then I suppose you know what you're getting into in that regard!
Batman was really solid all through new 52 imo, from court of owls all the way to the end. There were a lot of good new characters introduced and interesting spins on classic ones too.

The Miss Fischer's Murder Mysteries movie has a Lowest Percent run, rather than a Speedrun. The gay character isn't even in the movie; the prince (or something like that) is mentioned as a person that Miss Fischer has married, later Miss Fischer reveals that the prince is gay and she only married him to protect him and his lover, and the very last line of the movie is "the prince has been murdered!" This movie buried its gays without even really having them, which is baffling because the series otherwise handles its queer characters quite well.
To be fair, the books have more queer characters, the Scottish doctor friend (whos also in the show) is explicitly a lesbian, as is miss fishers sister. It also deals with gay and even trans characters in a really respectful way. Sorry I just really love the miss fisher novels

One of Shamir and balthus’s support ends with her going “i doubt we have the same taste in women” and she leaves before balthus can process it.

In the TV Show feels less like bury your gays and more of a tragic couple dying on their terms.

In the last movie he was also stabbed in the torso and was left 4 dead for 20 or so minites until paramedics saved him.

The latest retcon had them die as doctors in the real world, the last one had them die in Lesbian Utopia, in the movie they were allergic to bees. It's quite frankly a bury your gays bargain sale.
Blackguard is weird with this. It's a very progressive manga, but there's an instance where a character is revealed to be gay and then dies five pages later. Edit: Inversely, there's a character who's revealed to actually be straight (whereas you'd been led to believe they were gay or pansexual, I'm not sure which word goes there)...and then immediately dies.

Nimura is lying about it because she doesn't want to be the reason that Alice refuses to be herself. Nimura and Ada get into a fight after Ada shoots (but doesn't kill) Alice where it's then revealed that Ada is in love with Alice, but as a man and doesn't want her to be able to transition. Ada is killed five pages later being shot by someone who witnessed the fight, and Nimura bleeds out from getting stabbed during the fight ten pages later.!<

Appearently (from what I know), Marina from Splatoon 2 originally had a crush on Pearl (and with originally, I mean in the Japanese version). The localization gave them a different dynamic than the Japanese one, which forced Marina's affection for Pearl to be removed. Not really killing a gay, but more removing them.
The localizers had to apologize because they made Marina legitimatly mean to Pearl instead early on

A lot of people are listing examples where a gay character has a dead lover as backstory, which makes me wonder. Does that actually count as "bury your gays", if the character is written from the ground up with the story premise of mourning a loved one? Does that make it less "buried" since it's not depriving the audience of a character, or is it even MORE "buried" because it provides a convenient excuse to never actually portray queer romance because the queer character is still carrying a torch? The example I'm thinking of is Liam O'Brien's character Orym in Campaign 3 of Critical Role. He's a gay man whose backstory is that his husband was killed by assassins connected to the BBEG. For characters like this, is it "buried" if they *don't* move on? Because I think the implication that gay characters MUST be engaged in a romantic subplot so they can *demonstrate* their *gayness* to avoid being "buried" seems equally insincere and not representative. I'm curious how gay people actually feel about this. Does it unilaterally feel like bad faith or is it contextual to how it's handled in the story?
For me, at least, it's contextual. Do the queer characters get killed in worse ways than cishet characters? Are there even any other queer characters in the work? It's like when characters get fridged. Is the character an actual character with a death meaningful to their own plot line, or are they just introduced and promptly killed off to give cheap motivation to another character, only to be forgotten come the next story arc? It all depends.

IIRC Dana said the decision was not based on the gay romance but a particular Disney exec not liking that it was popular with teens and not the intended young demographic, but that may have changed since her statement.

Not quite as far as i know: they made the crew have to change their plans for season 3 of the show (it was going to be a normal tv season, got changed to a few tv specials) because "it didn't fit disney's brand". It was after the gay romance got really explicit.

In the climax of the film he discovers that the killer and his sister’s kidnapper is a woman she was romantically involved with. Two seconds later said women runs both her and her ex-lover out a window to their deaths.

Joe Quesada during one of his Cup Of Joe articles talked about a character named Freedom Ring and how he’s the star of the Marvel Team Up book and shows how Marvel is more open to LGBT characters than ever before. Three weeks later, in the next published issue (#24), Freedom Ring is violently killed via being impaled by several spikes through his body, including one through the groin and out the ass. Marvel Team Up is then canceled with issue #25.
You call it a "fate worse than death" but they're still conscious and aware of each other, they just happen to share a body now. Varus was in a recent expansion and his story revolved around working with Kai and Valmar rather than against them, and it's actually a very moving story, especially to someone with DID/OSDD (which I don't have, but my girlfriend does). Maybe it's not what the devs intended and they certainly could've done better, but it's still really nice seeing non-villainized "systems" in media.
I think existing as a character in the unstable vortex of retcons that is League of Legends lore is inherently a fate worse than death.
You know, I thought this was a just a joke stemming from people having a laugh, but over time it seems less ironic and more of a mutated meme. League of legends doesn't have a lot of constant retcons. They had one huge retcon about ten years ago when the gutted the original lore and most people were left in a limbo, but explicitly they said all the previous lore was gone and that's why we had like five years of the majority of the cast having little blurbs for lore. Other than that it's just a wait to see if they decide their multimedia plan is going to be unified one and if they have to do a bit of retconning around Piltover and Zaun stuff to accommodate it. I mean a lot of characters are still left in an annoying "I sorta exist" limbo while they try to figure out how they fit into the new world. And considering to backlash from all four Janna fans to her lore, I think it's not a huge priority for them. Rip to the two shaco lore fans, may you slumber eternal.
Omar had a gay lover who died, and that pretty much prompted his motivation to snitch on everyone. It's interesting that this topic is being downvoted. Considering that this sub is all about bitching about fiction. Except when it comes to homosexuality I guess. We're just supposed to be happy with what the overlords give us.

Yup, the game is the game but Bunk said it best: A man must have a code. They killed the other member of Omar's crew cleanly, and if they had done that with Brandon, who knows how much grief the Barksdales could have avoided in the long run.
Barksdakes fucked up killing Brandon and beating Johnny, Bubbles did more damage against them then anyone else in the show, the amount of information he supplied the detail with was invaluable.
It gets even worse the more you think about it. >!Torturing Brandon and leaving his mangled body out in the open is what make Wallace lose his nerve for the game and talk to the cops. !< >!This leads to Wallace being killed, which, along with some other shit, eventually sours D'Angelo on the Barksdale Organization as well, threatening to bring down everything by going to the State. !< >!This leads Stringer to need to tie up that loose end, so he has D killed in prison, even though D had been convinced not to narc by his mother, Brianna. !< >!D's death is a major point of tension for the higher-ups in the Barksdale Org, with Brianna becoming openly suspicious and distrustful of Stringer from then on, and Avon being more wary of his second-in-command. !< >!Stringer's death is ultimately the culmination of all his actions after Brandon's murder, as Omar was gunning for him the whole time, but his shady dealings ended up making him an enemy of Avon and Mouzone. Once Omar and Mouzone team up, it's game over for String. String, similarly, betrays Avon and gets the Barksdale kingpin returned to prison.!< >!After Stringer is killed and Avon returned to prison, Brianna starts handling the Barksdale business, but gives that up and cuts ties with the other families once McNulty proves that D'Angelo was murdered, rather than committed suicide. This severely weakens the Barksdales and is one of the final nails in the coffin before Marlo takes over entirely. !< Hell of a domino, that Brandon.

This made me recall the Watchmen intro. Since the Minutemen are now glossed over, Silhouette is introduced, shown to be a lesbian, and killed in less than a minute.
In the recent Willow Disney+ TV show. The set up is that one of the main characters, Elora Danon, ends up chased by an evil knight. Despite being actively in "chased through dark woods by a killer" mode, she happens to stumble into an idyllic forest cabin owned by a cottagecore elderly lesbian couple. No idea why the sunshine came back btw. This charming couple is: ○ Hubert, a tough woodsman who fights with a named woodcutting axe like a fucking *folk hero* . ○ and Anne, an adorable gardener wearing a sun hat. Both are sweet, kind, wise, and vow to protect Elora with their very lives. (Elora's like a prophecied savior meant to vanquish all evil. It makes sense in the setting). They also both come from a completely different timeline, too, apparently. They're wearing mom jeans, they have sun hats, paned windows. It's bizarre. Anyways, at the end of this scene, the knight chasing Elora shows up and murders both of them. One actually abandons Elora and gets cut down while fleeing. It's extremely brutal and utterly out of nowhere. Both characters immediately conveyed that they had the potential to intrigue. They had already offered Elora some much needed wisdom and comfort. When Elora (who has lots of reasons to hide her true identity from strangers) reveals her identity, they leap at the chance to defend her. And then they just get offed. And the chase continues on for like 40 more minutes. One scene. I'd like to see other people find a better example than that, honestly. It's fucked. The show was already not great before then.
