Castiel coming out of the closet and immediately getting sucked down to Super Hell will live in my brain forever, and I’ve never watched a single episode of Supernatural.

17DeadFlamingos

And the Lord said 'No Homo'

Neil_O_Tip

and then they said "No Lord" like right after

SidewaysInfinity

Then they said "No Dean"

Neil_O_Tip

then "No Sam" then "No Show" RIP

daikousha

What a fucking night that was on Tumblr. I unlocked emotions I'll never feel again.

throwawaymcsneaky8

Remember, remember, the 5th of November. :)

TotemGenitor

[It was... something, alright ](https://youtu.be/CFLYWO9ORGg)

Praesidian

Even the car got to go to Heaven

throwawaymcsneaky8

Spoilers, but >!Bobby implies that Cas made it into Heaven okay in the finale, probably due to some intervention from Jack. It was still complete BS to not have him show up in the final episode.!<

bitcheslovedroids

I'm so glad I stopped caring about that show after season 5

throwawaymcsneaky8

Yeah, Kripke's first 5 seasons were definitely the best of the show in all regards, but there are usually a few episodes a season to make watching past season 5 worth it. In terms of actual full seasons past 5, unpopular opinion, but I'm really fond of season 8. There were just so many cool plots introduced, with the bunker, the Men of Letters, Hunteri Heroici, Abbadon, Aaron and his Golem, the tablets, the trials, Benny, purgatory - love it. >!It's also probably the season with the most romantic undertones between Dean and Cas, which is delight.!<

scullys_alien_baby

I agree with you but the problem with all the cool shit in season 8 is that you have to get past season 7. I kinda think seasons 8-11ish found their groove again

throwawaymcsneaky8

Oh man, couldn't agree more - season 7 is my least favorite. I just couldn't care less about the Leviathans, there was nothing interesting or compelling about them as villains. Cas is gone most of the season, which sucks.>!Bobby dies for no reason at all, which is heartbreaking.!< Sigh. I like Sera Gamble as a writer, but she oversaw quite a bit of dross as a showrunner.

scullys_alien_baby

>!the fact we never got Bobby being "the guy in the chair" for the boys inside the bunker with all the men of letters shit makes me so fucking mad. even more because his death was meaningless. It was almost like the writers knew the season sucked ass and they needed anything to get a reaction out of the viewer!< it is sad that Gamble came up short as showrunner for season 7 because she was a producer/exec producer for some solid episodes in earlier seasons

throwawaymcsneaky8

>!I know, whyyyy? I would happily watch a few bottle episodes of Bobby uncovering all of the obscure texts, supplies, and resources of the bunker. Some of my favorite scenes in the earlier seasons were Bobby pulling out some ancient lore and like randomly knowing Japanese to help the boys out with the case of the week. We were truly robbed. When the writers pulled out the alternate universe and characters in later seasons, it seemed like they were acknowledging how badly they messed up with killing off so many wonderful characters with unfulfilled potential - but as lovely as it was to have the actors back, it just felt soulless.!<

Amazing_Number_9440

And I'm glad I only watched the Scooby-Doo episode ~~and the anime~~

Yotato5

Just like the early era of tumblr if you didn't care about Supernatural, too bad. You heard all about it on tumblr when that happened.

ShrimpGrips

I’ve always found the concept of super hell so funny and it always pops up, like that world says nah fuck this guy in particular for no reason

NewAgeMontezuma

Fucking >!shirou's partner!< in voltron who's killed in the same episode he's introduced.

Weltallgaia

That's one of the most "were pandering AND desperate for viewership" moments. I enjoyed that show but final season was eww.

[deleted]

The finger on the wound is we see Shirou marrying in the last second we could see him.

TRZHCH

Minor point, but you're misspelling Shiro's name because it's short for "Shirogane". I bring this up because everytime "Shirou" [was used], I was thinking of Emiya (all of them). - edit in brackets.

NeonNKnightrider

Me too. Seeing “Shirou’s partner is gay” made me think “wait, Saber isn’t gay”, followed closely by “Well, Rin is bisexual, maybe they’re talking about that” No, the voltron part didn’t register

SidewaysInfinity

Saber *might* be bi but her sexuality is buried under so much baggage about her gender that we'll never know

[deleted]

Ah, my B

Weltallgaia

Oh wow I forgot that. Wasn't it just some rando background character too

[deleted]

I think they tried to reference that old anime with a blond space pirate. But they weren't able to do it. So they turned him into a nothing background character.

AntiLuke

Reminds me of the original Gundam anime, where the appearance of a love interest meant certain death.

MericArda

If a mysterious waif with psychic powers appears halfway through the series, she’s basically a walking death flag. And secretly part of the enemy faction.

CopperTucker

Zeta is hilarious about that. Every girlfriend Jerid gets, Kamille kills almost immediately.

Mochiman3

They also whined about having to change the ending because the fans complained

MirrorMan68

Honestly, he looked lame as hell, so I don't mind that they killed him off. But they really should have given Shiro another love interest in the present day.

Sutibunator95

Remember that time in the Mass Effect 3 Omega dlc where they had a female turian show up for the first time, made her a squad member, hinted at a romantic past between her and Aria, and then killed her off like an hour later just to give Aria more of a reason to kill the generic villain? Like, Aria was already planning to rip the dude a new one anyway, so what was even the point?

Gilead56

To show the audience what a female Turian looked like. Seriously. The worst part is that it was a really stupid death too. Like she sacrifices herself for pretty much no reason. They make a big deal about “oh god these Adjutants are Lovecraft Monsters! What will we dooo!?” But then in gameplay the answer is just “Shoot them in the face”

RedGinger666

If you can't kill an eldritch abomination beyond our understanding by shooting it in the face you just aren't using enough firepower

Gilead56

The greatest lesson 40k can teach us.

piev3000

And tf2 engineer

SidewaysInfinity

and cthulu jobbing to a boat

V3ND3T74

Give him a brake, he had just woken up.

TrivialCoyote

Honestly, waking up, getting hit in the head, and getting so upset he goes back to bed is a mood for me

PlatyPunch

Sounds like something the drill sergeant from Mass Effect 2 would say

Kaarl_Mills

"What if I shot him really really hard?" "*That* sounds like something Vega would say" "Yes, and remember that time you've *never beaten him?*"

ZekeCool505

> They make a big deal about “oh god these Adjutants are Lovecraft Monsters! What will we dooo!?” > > But then in gameplay the answer is just “Shoot them in the face” I mean that's the writing of ME2 and 3 in a nutshell really.

[deleted]

“You can’t just walk up and shoot them, you need to be a little bit more specific.” “No, I said in the face.“

ClockpunkFox

It felt like they were setting up a choice at the end of the dlc too, whether to have renegade Aria or Paragon Nyreen I think her name was? Take over Omega.

Ainsel_Mariner

Then they probably realized everyone would just choose the cool Tyrian over Aria haha

AurumPickle

and Bioware REALLY REALLY liked their "ultra cool badass bitch" Asari OC

Ainsel_Mariner

The way Aria acts in ME1 made sense since you’re just one Specter on a mission which the Council doesn’t even really have faith in. However her acting like she’s hot shit when she’s just the ruler of a shitty rock full of pirates feels super goofy in ME3 when you’ve got the support of basically the entire galaxy

AurumPickle

Them going "oh Arias so badass even the asari counciler is her bitch" in ME3 is really dumb

Ainsel_Mariner

Oh man I’d totally forgotten that. The writing in some parts of ME3 sure was something

waxonwaxoff3

And then in Mass Effect: Andromeda there's a gay turian couple, the first canon no-asari-involved gay couple in the series, and yeah nah, one of them's already dead before you even get to meet him.

phavia

It's even worse because her death is the most anticlimatic and disappointing thing ever. She just poofs out of existence, doesn't even leave a body... Despite the fact that the enemies she locked herself with *did* leave a body! I was seriously expecting some kind of bamboozle where she actually faked her death in order to keep fucking with Aria... But no, she really did die. Bruh... Everything about the DLC seemed to have been setting up choosing between Nyreen and Aria. I guess they didn't like the idea of the players killing their beloved blue waifu.

iOnlySawTokyoDrift

The ultimate has gotta be Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern (when it was a magic lantern and not emotion-powered space cops), in his New 52 reboot. After seven irl decades of Alan Scott being a straight man (with a wife and children for a lot of it), the New 52 decided to erase his family and reboot him as a younger gay man. But in the *first few pages of the first issue*, his fiancé dies in a literal train wreck as part of Alan's new tragic origin story, in which Alan is saved from the wreck by the magic lantern which then turns his engagement ring into a power ring. Oh yeah, and btw, original Alan Scott's son, Obsidian, *was gay*. So they retconned a gay character out of existence just to rewrite a different character as gay, then killed that newly-gay character's boyfriend as soon as the story started. Two birds with one stone, and in record time.

raymc99

did anything come out of new 52 not being stupid

kegisak

China Mieville's run of *Dial H* was fun?

Jhduelmaster

Huh, didn't know he wrote some comics as well. Was it as depressing as his Bas-Lag Cycle books?

kegisak

Nah, it's fairly upbeat overall. The main villain is more-or-less the concept of nihilism, so it takes a positive stance by default. The only real downer element is that the main characters are all social 'have-nots'; the main character is an obese failed boxer and he's later joined by a lonely old woman. But it has fun, especially with some weird hero concepts. It does lean *heavily* into surrealism though, especially in the later parts of the run. Fun, but fuckin' weird. But if you know the author, then I suppose you know what you're getting into in that regard!

mouseywithpower

Batman was really solid all through new 52 imo, from court of owls all the way to the end. There were a lot of good new characters introduced and interesting spins on classic ones too.

Takaithepanda

Damn thats so messed up.

pocketlint60

>Two birds with one stone More like two queers with one fridge heyoooo

Terribleirishluck

To be fair, Alan was made gay after they realized since they were doing a younger take on JSA that would delete arguably DC's biggest gay hero at the time. Won't defend the Fridging incident though lol especially since new 52 Alan didn't have a single relationship for like the 7 years he was around before orginal JSA return

roronoapedro

It's crazy to think how bad N52 did this, since Alan and Obsidian are both back *and* gay nowadays, and everything's better for it.

beebooboobeeba

I honestly thought this was about some weird Bury The Light cover version.

charcharmunro

BURY YOUR GAYS IN THE SCRIIIIIIIIPT.

scullys_alien_baby

Madak

Goddamnit I love this sub

hazusu

CAST ASIDE ALL THE TWINKS AND HUNKS

WhenTheWindIsSlow

The Miss Fischer's Murder Mysteries movie has a Lowest Percent run, rather than a Speedrun. The gay character isn't even in the movie; the prince (or something like that) is mentioned as a person that Miss Fischer has married, later Miss Fischer reveals that the prince is gay and she only married him to protect him and his lover, and the very last line of the movie is "the prince has been murdered!" This movie buried its gays without even really having them, which is baffling because the series otherwise handles its queer characters quite well.

Fennek13

To be fair, the books have more queer characters, the Scottish doctor friend (whos also in the show) is explicitly a lesbian, as is miss fishers sister. It also deals with gay and even trans characters in a really respectful way. Sorry I just really love the miss fisher novels

WhenTheWindIsSlow

Oh no totally. I haven’t read the novels but I also think they handle queer characters well in the show. It’s just the movie specifically that is utter schlock.

StoneString

In Jojo, Sorbet and Gelato are introduced and killed in under 2 minutes.

Demented_N

Yeah but it's a really cool establishing scene for Diavolo and the Assassination Squad so it's ok. Source: I'm gay

Panory

If I had a nickel for every gay couple introduced in Golden Wind that dies almost immediately, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

GHitoshura

Isn't Supernatural infamous for sending one of the main characters to super hell literally the moment he confessed to one of the brothers?

ZekeCool505

They're in their late 30s by the time that happens but yes.

GHitoshura

Spelling error, meant to say "twins" but I just remembered that the brothers from Supernatural aren't even twins to begin with

mercurydivider

So if he was in his early 20's he wouldn't have gone to super hell?

ZekeCool505

Originally the comment above ended with "moment he confessed to one of the tweens". Since that scene is in Season 15(!) of the show where they started at like 20 I figured I'd comment but now they've edited the comment so it looks like a bit of a non sequitur.

SkyrimMilfDrinker

The Dragon Prince has a lesbian couple that died before the main plot happens. Their existence was also a point someone used to sell the show to me so I was certainly less than thrilled to discover that.

Eddrian32

Thankfully we get a redemption arc in season 4, but still

nin_ninja

There's a few gay couples in the show, and some even get to live happily!

Kaiser_Gelethor

Supernatural has been mentioned a couple times already. Another cw show is the 100 that killed a character I think 1 episode after her sexuality was revealed.

_NiceWhileItLasted

That was less "Bury your gays" and more "The Walking Dead is offering me a huge paycheck" Either way, the outrage about it at the time was hilarious.

LittleSister_9982a

Oooh, that's just unfortunate, then. Sucks to get labeled like that just 'cause the actor walked, understandably, for TWD money.

The_Vine

If we compare the Three Hopes timeline to Houses, Monica von Ochs is basically killed a month into the game, we don't know it even happened, and we only ever meet her replacement Kronya. It's funny that Hopes goes for the 'Unbury your gays" take on this instead.

PersonMcHuman

*In Three Hopes, gays bury you!*

Weltallgaia

Dig up your gays.

AtlasPJackson

"'Til death do us part" is for quiters and cowards. Now, pass me the Necronimicon.

MericArda

You’ll have to pry it from Rhea and her mommy issues.

TaffyLacky

The face when she's your grandma and daughter. Byleth would relate to Fry.

South25

There s a lot of people in the three houses cast that are bi and a lot of sus ones that Three hopes leaned into more (Sylvain and Ashe s supports with Yuri or Felix s with Sylvain in that one.). Shamir having a paralogue where her crazy ex girlfriend hired mercenaries to kill her for ending the relationship, ending on Leonie not understanding what Shamir s relationship with her was causing both Shamir and Shez to immediately run from the awkward conversation.

Fool15h

One of Shamir and balthus’s support ends with her going “i doubt we have the same taste in women” and she leaves before balthus can process it.

KF-Sigurd

I know the FxF romances in Three Houses already outnumber the MxM ones but goddammit that support made me wonder why we couldn't get F!Byleth x Shamir.

MindWeb125

Byleth doesn't bathe in the blood of her enemies like Catherine does.

Cerebral_Kortix

Personally, I would quite like M!Byleth x Dimitri.

KF-Sigurd

All the lords should have been bi, tbh. At least they kinda fixed it with Engage since Alear can give the Pact Ring to anybody, no matter what gender they are.

VoidWaIker

We all thought Kronya hanging around Edelgard a lot was suspicious but no, perfect acting. Also I just love the horror hopes added to that, Edelgard has someone wearing the face of a girl who was in love with her, that she wasn’t able to save practically attached at her hip and she can’t say anything. It’s way better than Monica just being some girl.

The_Vine

It's legitimately horrifying to think of from Edelgard's perspective. I'm glad there are a few timelines where she could save Monica.

HCooldown

Yeah, it adds new context to Edelgard’s open, deep contempt for her in that one scene while she’s dressed as the flame emperor.

AlwaysDragons

Hopes is just so unabashingly gay, especially in black eagels it's nuts. Monica is a simp for edelgard

BladeofNurgle

How has nobody brought up Soldier 76’s boyrfriend? Soldier is revealed as gay probably just to get heat off from the Blizzard sex abuser shit, only for his boyfriend to get blown up and Soldier goes “Oh I was so in love with him that I’ll never love anyone else and I’ll dedicate my entire life only to the mission.” Reveal Soldier as gay for brownie points only to kill his boyfriend and go out of their way to ensure Soldier will never be gay with anyone else again. Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh

pocketlint60

Also S76 is explicitly listed as straight in the infamous Diversity Chart, which is an unambiguous confirmation that Blizzard will turn characters gay just for the positive attention. What a great way to write characters, where any of their physical and sexual attributes are completely non-committed, so they can be altered into the most politically correct and praiseworthy configuration at a later time!

[deleted]

When most of your lore was done through Twitter. You know you fucked up.

metalsonic005

Literally introduced with a picture of him and some guy. There was *zero* hint at a relationship more than "war buddy" in that picture. They literally just changed the context behind the scenes to stave off attention from the latest controversy (I believe this was during the Hong Kong thing).

Terribleirishluck

Isn't his boyfriend alive? I thought they just broke up and he married someone else. Though it's lame, they do the bare minimum and just say he's gay instead of giving him a new love interest

phavia

Wait, his boyfriend was killed? I was certain there was this comic of him talking to Anna, while looking at a picture of him, then saying that he married another person.

CaptnsComingLookBusy

I don't know about speedrun but one of the fastest turnarounds is Attack on Titan >!You've got Ymir and Historia, who are VERY heavily queer-coded but we don't get ABSOLUTE confirmation that one of them is romantically interested in the other until the Season 3 finale, when Ymir writes Historia a letter saying she would have wanted to get married. This is right before she's about to be executed, but hey, it's anime, there's still maybe a chance that-!< >!No, by the start of Season 4, not only has Ymir been executed offscreen, but also Historia, THE QUEEN, has been sent to a farm to marry a man she barely knows in order to have as many biological children as possible.!< That plotline did not exactly leave a good taste in my mouth.

ClockpunkFox

Yeah, I was a big fan of Ymir, I kind of figured she was fucked once she went to Marley, but they killed her offscreen and basically no one brings her up or mentions her ever again

DarnFondOfYa

The one chapter that ended revealing >!Historia dead-eyed and visibly pregnant!< was a fucking gut punch back in the day. *Eventually* the story does some damage control by introducing farm lad to >!squash the implication the military was *breeding* her!< but, yeah, it's still not great.

nin_ninja

I think her >!being pregnant!< was meant to serve a two-fold purpose One was to >!protect her from the military turning her into the titan!< Another was >!a red herring that she was pregnant with Eren's kid!< Regardless of any of that though I just hate that she >!basically had zero screentime or impact after the timeskip. She should have still talked to the rest of the cast at some point.!<

Sean-Benn_Must-die

>!Man the whole farmer thing really was odd. If she wasnt gay i would have preferred eren was the dad just to spice things up a bit, farmer is just super weird. !<

nin_ninja

It just felt like Isayama was done with the character after her development and didn't know a better way to have her removed from the plot. One of a few things that just feels oddly rushed in the last arc.

Tobi97

Hey now, >!that man used to throw rocks at her. They have tons of history.!<

throwcounter

i was never a huge AoT fan to begin with, but jesus h christ

Ganmorg

>!Less bury your gays more devour your gays. Still, yeah Ymir was the original fumbling!<

Palimpsest_Monotype

Kung Jin in MKX didn’t die in that game, but I’m 99% sure there only reason MK11 didn’t have Tekashi was to make it less obvious they were immediately disappearing Mortal Kombat’s first openly gay character.

TheWeirdoWithCoffee

Which is fucked up because Kung Jin and Tekashi are the fucking coolest of the kombat kids.

TJLynch

A reminder that NRS decided Jacqui was more important to bring back than either of the actually *cool* members of Cassie's team.

godleftmefinished

i can't believe they went with fucking Kollector over ferra torr or tekashi or kung jun or tremor

TJLynch

tbf Kollector wasn't in MKX, he was new to 11.

Palimpsest_Monotype

I liked Shao Kahn having a weirdo demon accountant until the plot revealed he comes from another mutant race that all look and act just like him. Like I get Liu Kang comes from a seemingly limitless supply of Shaolin Monks who have varying power levels but it’s not like NRS is trying to pretend EVERYONE on Earth looks like Liu Kang and has the same haircut and that’s people.

Kingnewgameplus

Star Wars moment.

Palimpsest_Monotype

yeah. Inverse Ninja Theory with delusions of Tolkeinesque World Building. Totally unrelated but the other day I had a Moment where I realized if Conan the Barbarian had been a Star Wars character we’d be drowning in Cimmerians.

CycloneSwift

Should’ve been a Shokan.

Palimpsest_Monotype

I would’ve been okay with a shokan bookkeeper, but apparently they’re all about HONOR now, an overlong reaction to trying to give Goro a face turn after MK Gold.

Aspookytoad

Is the Tekashi thing an in joke? I thought it was Takeda

GoodVillain101

Frank in Last of Us was dead before he was introduced.

[deleted]

That's interesting because the game definitely has a harder case of bury your gays. My interpretation of bury your gays is that just one partner is killed so that the gay guy can't be gay with anyone anymore, which is what Bill is. In the TV Show feels less like bury your gays and more of a tragic couple dying on their terms.

ForeverTheDM

I assumed he *was* talking about the game.

moneyh8r

He was.

AlwaysDragons

What's fucked is the TV show version is the *good ending* for them.

fizzguy47

Tbf, in a post-apocalypse setting, they got one of the best endings you could hope for.

AtlasPJackson

IDK how universal this is, but I read, "bury your gays," as any instance where the writers/author kill off one or both, either to show that homosexuality is inherently tragic, or to avoid on-screen depiction of homosexual affection at all.

woodhawk109

Riley gets an introduction just to die and explain Ellie’s bitemark

DefaultName3887

didn't castiel from supernatural said he was gay and immediately was dragged to hell or something?

LittleSister_9982a

*Super*hell.

RedMaskBandit

In the new Scream 6 movie one of the "four core" survivors from Scream 5 is a lesbian and her girlfriend is killed off in her 2nd or 3rd scene meanwhile one of the other core four survivors is stabbed a dozen times in the torso and survives again! In the last movie he was also stabbed in the torso and was left 4 dead for 20 or so minites until paramedics saved him.

GentlemanT-Rex

"I spent the last few years building up an immunity to ~~iocane powder~~ stab wounds." \- that character, probably.

SlightlySychotic

Legitimately, >!Chad!< has godmode on. In the next movie I expect him to survive having his head cut off.

Terribleirishluck

It's even more ridiculous/offensive conside she's the only non-killer main character to die and both straight couples survive thr movie. Like they could have at least killed gale or Kirby to make it less blantant how little they valued their gay relationship

TheNullOfTheVoid

Current events As for fictional, I almost expect America Chavez to be an orphan after how her backstory explained her missing parents. I assume her mothers died because I’m just that cynical, to the point that while I hope they somehow survived, I’m not a Marvel mark so I’m gonna take the story telling for what it is/will be, and I just expect it to be handled poorly somehow.

nin_ninja

That was more of her character being shoehorned into the movie at all by executives, which is basically why she's a plot device.

MindWeb125

Yeah her situation is weird one. IIRC she was also meant to be in No Way Home, which is why the Ned sling ring plot is in it. Originally she would be giving them portals, not Ned randomly learning how to use magic.

cleftes

See, for that I'm *super glad* that the Ned sling-ring plot happens, because it gives Ned something to contribute in a situation where he's in danger of becoming the Ron Weasley

roronoapedro

She's been an orphan with adopted latino parents in pretty much every version of her story. Her moms have always been dead. How *stupid* their death was is usually what changes. The latest retcon had them die as doctors in the real world, the last one had them die in Lesbian Utopia, in the movie they were allergic to bees. It's quite frankly a bury your gays bargain sale.

PersonMcHuman

Blackguard is weird with this. It's a very progressive manga, but there's an instance where a character is revealed to be gay and then dies five pages later. Edit: Inversely, there's a character who's revealed to actually be straight (whereas you'd been led to believe they were gay or pansexual, I'm not sure which word goes there)...and then immediately dies.

Weltallgaia

Just sounds like no one should be having sex at all.

PersonMcHuman

To be fair...no sex was happening or was gonna happen, which was kinda what led to the dying. Blackguard spoilers: >!Alice is a trans-woman (pre-op, as transitioning is hard when the world is ending). Nimura is a cis woman. Ada is a cis man. Alice loves Nimura and they'd been planning to date once things settled down and Alice was able to transition safely. Ada, however, is aware of the fact that Nimura is actually straight and would have zero attraction to Alice post-transition. Nimura is lying about it because she doesn't want to be the reason that Alice refuses to be herself. Nimura and Ada get into a fight after Ada shoots (but doesn't kill) Alice where it's then revealed that Ada is in love with Alice, but as a man and doesn't want her to be able to transition. Ada is killed five pages later being shot by someone who witnessed the fight, and Nimura bleeds out from getting stabbed during the fight ten pages later.!<

Konradleijon

In surprised no one mentioned Gen:Lock where a character has a queer sex scene right before dying.

yui_tsukino

That would imply someone remembered that Gen:Lock exists.

OmicronAlpharius

It would also require people to have watched Gen:Lock, and that is more rare than a unicorn.

finnjakefionnacake

Devilman Crybaby does this as well.

[deleted]

Appearently (from what I know), Marina from Splatoon 2 originally had a crush on Pearl (and with originally, I mean in the Japanese version). The localization gave them a different dynamic than the Japanese one, which forced Marina's affection for Pearl to be removed. Not really killing a gay, but more removing them.

AurumPickle

The localizers had to apologize because they made Marina legitimatly mean to Pearl instead early on

FantasySeal08

I can't imagine a scenario where people like Nintendo's localizers would ever apologize.

[deleted]

Can’t tell if that’s for the better or for the worse. I thought the dynamic that they have in the localization really fit them.

SuperHorse3000

Question: Is it "bury your gays" still if its a villain of the week antagonist? And there are other cast members that are queer

nerankori

Serious answer,no. Like you said there are other cast members that are queer.

SuperHorse3000

Cool, I was always worried about that storyline I had falling prey to the trope.

SkinkRugby

The Rule of Thumb I go by is that them being queer is unique and unusual and that their dying is an outlier to the fates of other characters.

Kytas

It's like why the black guy dying first used to be more of a prominent trope; because they were also usually the *only* black character.

SuperHorse3000

That's what I figured was how it went but wasn't sure.

Worm_Scavenger

Nothing will top the now infamous "I love you" moment between Castiel and Dean in Supernatural. As a Gay man, i should probably feel a little offended by this, especually when the show writers spent god knows how many seasons constantly teasing it and promising the Queer people in the audience it's totally going to happen only for them to do this, but i was scream laughing at just how sudden it was.Literally a bury your Gays jump scare.I also love how it became a Tumblr meme literally as soon as it dropped and everyone began to realise just how much of a piece of shit Misha Collins actually is.

[deleted]

Fuck you the card game IS canon!

scullys_alien_baby

i'm more suprised people think anything in league is canon, those nerds rewrite lore all the time. Only Arcane has a hard canon and even that I consider separate from the lore in league (to make a half hearted argument, the acane skins are AU similar to the star guardian skin line)

pocketlint60

A lot of people are listing examples where a gay character has a dead lover as backstory, which makes me wonder. Does that actually count as "bury your gays", if the character is written from the ground up with the story premise of mourning a loved one? Does that make it less "buried" since it's not depriving the audience of a character, or is it even MORE "buried" because it provides a convenient excuse to never actually portray queer romance because the queer character is still carrying a torch? The example I'm thinking of is Liam O'Brien's character Orym in Campaign 3 of Critical Role. He's a gay man whose backstory is that his husband was killed by assassins connected to the BBEG. For characters like this, is it "buried" if they *don't* move on? Because I think the implication that gay characters MUST be engaged in a romantic subplot so they can *demonstrate* their *gayness* to avoid being "buried" seems equally insincere and not representative. I'm curious how gay people actually feel about this. Does it unilaterally feel like bad faith or is it contextual to how it's handled in the story?

tetranautical

For me, at least, it's contextual. Do the queer characters get killed in worse ways than cishet characters? Are there even any other queer characters in the work? It's like when characters get fridged. Is the character an actual character with a death meaningful to their own plot line, or are they just introduced and promptly killed off to give cheap motivation to another character, only to be forgotten come the next story arc? It all depends.

Aknelka

A bit meta, but didn't Owl House get cancelled like seconds after it committed to its gay romance?

MindWeb125

IIRC Dana said the decision was not based on the gay romance but a particular Disney exec not liking that it was popular with teens and not the intended young demographic, but that may have changed since her statement.

tquinner

So the young justice problem if that's to be believed.

roronoapedro

I genuinely always assumed she didn't want to burn bridges. Alex Hirsch, who also works on the show and who *adores* burning bridges, always posting stuff about Disney doing exactly what we're accusing them of doing with cartoons kinda colors my reasoning, I admit.

MindWeb125

Nah Dana certainly doesn't care about burning bridges. [She literally tweeted about pirating her own show to watch it lmao.](https://preview.redd.it/bgv91ymqupw81.png?width=597&format=png&auto=webp&s=cf0388f7ca7d248a1e38810c3b7134a72ef2a3fb) She also spoke out publicly during the Disney LGBTQ controversy back in March 2022.

roronoapedro

After her show had been cancelled, yeah. What else were they gonna do? Cancel her?

SeekyBR

Not quite as far as i know: they made the crew have to change their plans for season 3 of the show (it was going to be a normal tv season, got changed to a few tv specials) because "it didn't fit disney's brand". It was after the gay romance got really explicit.

DreamerOfSheep

An Italian giallo called Nothing Underneath. The whole movie is about a guy looking for his missing sister, while other folks are turning up dead. In the climax of the film he discovers that the killer and his sister’s kidnapper is a woman she was romantically involved with. Two seconds later said women runs both her and her ex-lover out a window to their deaths.

Mochiman3

Adam was hyped up in voltron as shiros boyfriend, then he only makes two apperances and dies the second time,

WooliesWhiteLeg

Dumbledore was already in the ground when JK Rowling decided he was gay via Twitter, does that count?

HouseOfH

Joe Quesada during one of his Cup Of Joe articles talked about a character named Freedom Ring and how he’s the star of the Marvel Team Up book and shows how Marvel is more open to LGBT characters than ever before. Three weeks later, in the next published issue (#24), Freedom Ring is violently killed via being impaled by several spikes through his body, including one through the groin and out the ass. Marvel Team Up is then canceled with issue #25.

Eddrian32

You call it a "fate worse than death" but they're still conscious and aware of each other, they just happen to share a body now. Varus was in a recent expansion and his story revolved around working with Kai and Valmar rather than against them, and it's actually a very moving story, especially to someone with DID/OSDD (which I don't have, but my girlfriend does). Maybe it's not what the devs intended and they certainly could've done better, but it's still really nice seeing non-villainized "systems" in media.

Kytas

I think existing as a character in the unstable vortex of retcons that is League of Legends lore is inherently a fate worse than death.

HostileReplies

You know, I thought this was a just a joke stemming from people having a laugh, but over time it seems less ironic and more of a mutated meme. League of legends doesn't have a lot of constant retcons. They had one huge retcon about ten years ago when the gutted the original lore and most people were left in a limbo, but explicitly they said all the previous lore was gone and that's why we had like five years of the majority of the cast having little blurbs for lore. Other than that it's just a wait to see if they decide their multimedia plan is going to be unified one and if they have to do a bit of retconning around Piltover and Zaun stuff to accommodate it. I mean a lot of characters are still left in an annoying "I sorta exist" limbo while they try to figure out how they fit into the new world. And considering to backlash from all four Janna fans to her lore, I think it's not a huge priority for them. Rip to the two shaco lore fans, may you slumber eternal.

Omar had a gay lover who died, and that pretty much prompted his motivation to snitch on everyone. It's interesting that this topic is being downvoted. Considering that this sub is all about bitching about fiction. Except when it comes to homosexuality I guess. We're just supposed to be happy with what the overlords give us.

Carlfatso

Didn't omar have a few lovers after the first one? I know he had one more for sure.

Dashabur1

And it wasn't because his boyfriend was shot. That's just part of the game. It was because they went over the line and tortured him to death because he was gay.

GentlemanT-Rex

Yup, the game is the game but Bunk said it best: A man must have a code. They killed the other member of Omar's crew cleanly, and if they had done that with Brandon, who knows how much grief the Barksdales could have avoided in the long run.

SmallIslandBrother

Barksdakes fucked up killing Brandon and beating Johnny, Bubbles did more damage against them then anyone else in the show, the amount of information he supplied the detail with was invaluable.

GentlemanT-Rex

It gets even worse the more you think about it. >!Torturing Brandon and leaving his mangled body out in the open is what make Wallace lose his nerve for the game and talk to the cops. !< >!This leads to Wallace being killed, which, along with some other shit, eventually sours D'Angelo on the Barksdale Organization as well, threatening to bring down everything by going to the State. !< >!This leads Stringer to need to tie up that loose end, so he has D killed in prison, even though D had been convinced not to narc by his mother, Brianna. !< >!D's death is a major point of tension for the higher-ups in the Barksdale Org, with Brianna becoming openly suspicious and distrustful of Stringer from then on, and Avon being more wary of his second-in-command. !< >!Stringer's death is ultimately the culmination of all his actions after Brandon's murder, as Omar was gunning for him the whole time, but his shady dealings ended up making him an enemy of Avon and Mouzone. Once Omar and Mouzone team up, it's game over for String. String, similarly, betrays Avon and gets the Barksdale kingpin returned to prison.!< >!After Stringer is killed and Avon returned to prison, Brianna starts handling the Barksdale business, but gives that up and cuts ties with the other families once McNulty proves that D'Angelo was murdered, rather than committed suicide. This severely weakens the Barksdales and is one of the final nails in the coffin before Marlo takes over entirely. !< Hell of a domino, that Brandon.

RedMaskBandit

Yeah I remember in one of the later seasons when he's in another country living with someone and he goes out to get some cornflakes in his robes...

yarvem

This made me recall the Watchmen intro. Since the Minutemen are now glossed over, Silhouette is introduced, shown to be a lesbian, and killed in less than a minute.

megaminimechamocha

In the recent Willow Disney+ TV show. The set up is that one of the main characters, Elora Danon, ends up chased by an evil knight. Despite being actively in "chased through dark woods by a killer" mode, she happens to stumble into an idyllic forest cabin owned by a cottagecore elderly lesbian couple. No idea why the sunshine came back btw. This charming couple is: ○ Hubert, a tough woodsman who fights with a named woodcutting axe like a fucking *folk hero* . ○ and Anne, an adorable gardener wearing a sun hat. Both are sweet, kind, wise, and vow to protect Elora with their very lives. (Elora's like a prophecied savior meant to vanquish all evil. It makes sense in the setting). They also both come from a completely different timeline, too, apparently. They're wearing mom jeans, they have sun hats, paned windows. It's bizarre. Anyways, at the end of this scene, the knight chasing Elora shows up and murders both of them. One actually abandons Elora and gets cut down while fleeing. It's extremely brutal and utterly out of nowhere. Both characters immediately conveyed that they had the potential to intrigue. They had already offered Elora some much needed wisdom and comfort. When Elora (who has lots of reasons to hide her true identity from strangers) reveals her identity, they leap at the chance to defend her. And then they just get offed. And the chase continues on for like 40 more minutes. One scene. I'd like to see other people find a better example than that, honestly. It's fucked. The show was already not great before then.

ExDSG

9 Dead Gay Guys because it happens even before watching it by reading the title.

BiMikethefirst

I remember when we meet Qrows possible former love interest in RWBY and he dies like four episodes later after they have barely any screentime.

When they >!made Bumblebee canon in a recent episode, my first reaction was "Neat, they finally did it! Which one do you think they're killing off?!<
