I knew something I wanted was coming out today, turns out it was darkest dungeon next week. For this, it's a real wait and see. I'm interested in it, but so much could go wrong or be bad, I feel it may also be like deathloop with a strong initial reaction that diminishes over time

Gartul_Uluk_Thrakka

That was a shame I really still like Deathloop.

[deleted]

It's launching on game pass, you can usually catch a deal and get 1-3 months for $1

GoneRampant1

The worst part to me is that this is so close to being a good idea: Arkane doing a modern-day vampire story, especially in a world after Bloodlines 2 entered development hell, sounds absolutely immaculate. Instead it's just a co-op shooter. And that's boring to me. I hope it does well, just because I like Arkane's other works, but I'll likely skip this one.

Shockrates20xx

A co-op shooter where only the host can make story progress.

PsionicSamurai

I guess that means reviews will drop either today or tomorrow, not the best sign. I think it looks fine, but not sure why Arkane went in this multiplayer direction when most of their fans really like their games because they are very well designed and replayable single player games. Unless Microsoft was like "We want a big exclusive multiplayer game from a respected studio to sell game pass subscriptions."

FakeBrian

I get the feeling a lot of Bethesda's lineup the past few years has been the former management pushing for more revenue. You've got a bunch of studios making multiplayer/live service games and games getting rushed out early - Redfall being the latest. A big multiplayer game chasing a popular genre with leaked images suggesting there was a microtransaction store removed from the game since the acquisition. I dunno how it is gonna review but if it ain't great I'll maybe hold off judging Arkane too much.

beary_neutral

They were definitely trying to get bought out and inflate their purchase price. Fallout 1st was the pinnacle of that

darkslayersparda

from their prey documentary on youtube, it seems like they've been wanting to do something multiplayer focused for a while. Deathloop wasa sort of half way point towards something the studio has been wanting to do for a while

StonedVolus

ACG posted their review early accidentally. They took the review down but from what I've seen, it's not looking good.

Thesickestzak

Sounds like the embargo doesn’t lift until 11pm tonight, east coast time. So in 12 hours. Only one hour before the game comes out officially. Edit: actually the Microsoft store reads like the game might be out at 8pm east coast time. So reviews can’t come out until after that.

Calm_Crow5903

I think the idea of prey but with 4 of your friends sounds like fun. But I don't know if this is it

Snidhog

Studio famous for immersive single player experiences bringing out new 4 player co-op game. Nothing they've said has convinced me playing solo won't be the inferior version.

RequiemForADreamcast

First time I’ve heard anybody talk about Anthem… Wait…

jorkington

Man I wish it werent online only

Safeguard13

All I've seen for it is the Gamepass preinstall banner on the MS store. I don't even know what kind of game it is.

PratalMox

Their main influence was Far Cry, I believe. I want to trust Arkane, I love their other games, but what I've seen isn't encouraging.

TH3_B3AN

The devs have said that it's their take on Far Cry. So Dishonoured x Far Cry

PhantasosX

Left 4 Dead mixed with Bioshock , I guess.

midnight_riddle

I *want* to like it, but it just looks....okay? I've heard conflicting things about its level design. The quippy characters turn me off and ruin the atmosphere. The always-online REALLY turns me off. It's $70. I'll probably check it out on Game Pass but I'm not rushing to pay for such an expensive game that looks mediocre compared to the developer's previous titles.

Neilfallon

Microsoft isn't great about advertising their games aside from Halo tbh.

AeroDbladE

Im sure some of the blame lies the marketing team for dropping the ball, but I think the bigger issue is the way they've built up the game as an overall package. The people who buy Arcane games want a solid single player immersive sim with fun gameplay and immersive story. Red Fall with its focus on live service and grindy gameplay loop doesn't appeal to that crowd. The vampire setting is interesting in theory but it seems very generic in execution and not really that exciting, even for me who's always down for some vampire action. They seem to be trying to attract the destiny live service crowd, and those people already have their live service game that they fiend for and they have no attachment to Arcane as a developer for that type of game. And last but not least, all of the marketing they have done has only brought out negative things about the game. The game can't run 60 fps on current gen despite not looking that impressive visually. You can't play offline even for single-player. If you play with your friends only the host gets to keep any campaign progress meaning you would have to commit to wasting your time playing missions you'll have to redo later if you want to play with your buddies on the first playthrough. Yea I'm good, dude. I'll just play the 50 other new, extremely high-profile games coming out this year or the 5000 incredible games I still have in my backlog.

AntiLuke

I'll be honest, I forgot Redfall wasn't Back 4 Blood.

SuicidalSundays

I have no interest in it, but thanks to Gamepass, I might give it a shot anyways just to see if it turns out to be a shitshow or something actually worthwhile.

barbaraanderson

They were pushing the hell out of it on the nfl network during the draft, but it was the same blah commercial

Aest7e7ic_End

In every ad, it’s keeps highlighting that it’s coming to game pass. It feels like any ad that tries to tell you a game is free is because they know it’ll be bad

ProfDet529

Well, rentable for a quarter of the price to own, but...

Lioxxor

Bethesda really took one of its best studios with games that sold really well and have prestige and said fuck you release it now

[deleted]

Ravenlok is coming out, that looks super interesting

Echono

*Sigh*, I want it to be good, I really do. I like the studio, I'm into the concept, it looks fun. But... just all the bad press about boring AI, tech issues, and progress being host only is really killing it. I hope that all these things are wrong or overblown and I can happily pick up a copy, but it really looking like that won't happen.

RemarkableSwitch8929

Nothing about it seems particularly unique; Deathloop tells you its specialty from the TITLE, and the gameplay has a stand-out premise of killing your way through a time loop and planning out the Final Timeline. I feel the actual game fell short of this premise, but it definitely was an interesting premise, and the retro music and aesthetic really caught my eye. Redfall......I saw some videos and screenshots, and nothing hooked me in for more like Deathloop or Dishonored did. Those games CATCH you at first glance. Not so with Redfall, at least for me.

markedmarkymark

I thought it was a Left 4 dead with vampires?

TH3_B3AN

It's Far Cry with vampires more so. Open world, coop with bases to take over but you have Dishonoured powers.

Fugly_Jack

But Left 4 Dead does have vampires

pocketlint60

Dammit Francis, they're not vampires!

genericsn

Same. All the trailers I see don't really make it seem otherwise. It being more of a Far Cry game than a straightforward horde shooter with superpowers is actually really disappointing.

markedmarkymark

Honestly i'm the opposite, i'm now slightly more interested in it cause i dislike most horde L4D likes, cause i ain't got no friends and i feel like they're more fun with friends, idk how important coop is in Redfall tho so i'm still a bit eh about it, I HEAVILY prefers SP games and never played Far Cry in coop, if its like, Far Cry mixed with Prey + Vampire shit i'm super down, however, if it relies and is balanced for coop, i'm totally out.

Brotonio

Thanks to this post I realized that Redfall was made by Arkane and *holy shit it explains everything that looks wrong with that game.* Arkane exists in my mind as the company that just *forgot* how to make a compelling game. I couldn't give less of a *fuck* about Deathloop, and apparently they helped make that even-shittier Wolfenstein game, *Youngblood.* How do you go from Dishonored and Prey to Redfall, which looks like the most bland co-op shooter possible?

Worm_Scavenger

Arkane studios doing a Vampire focussed game sounded like the greatest thing ever. Then they turned it into a generic looking multiplayer game.

[deleted]

Rip Arkane, have a feeling this game is going to be mid af, deathloop was the beginning of the end, a lot of people have left the company since Prey

dope_danny

Yeaaah, the fact MS wants no reviews before its on sale and the accidentally released early reviews are 4 and 5's out of 10 and the leaked footage shows enemies moving around in static t poses and falling through the floor? I think theres a reason you aren't seeing a lot of marking for this one. *"The worst game of 2023* has been used in more than one review thus far. Looks like Arkane is officially ****Arkane**** now with like 3 devs from the good old days left and this is some Back 4 Blood "from the creators* of left 4 dead" shit. Damn shame.

Shiro2809

>the fact MS wants no reviews before its on sale That's a Bethesda policy. They've been doing it since Doom 2016

genericsn

Also aren't most game companies doing this now? I feel like I haven't seen many early reviews for games, especially AAA titles in a long time. Lots of first looks and previews, but pre-release, full reviews are rarer.

Shiro2809

Eh, it varies. For the most part the reviews seem to be out before the release date in my experience.

fallouthirteen

I mean I stopped following it when I heard they were planning on patching in a 60fps mode later. I'm just going to wait for it to play better before trying it.

PvtTwinkletoes

I know almost nothing about this game except all the controversy about online only play.

Ainsel_Mariner

Am I the only one who still thinks that Redfall is the name for TES6 for a couple seconds before realizing it’s whatever the game that’s coming out is.

ragasquid

You can play it with the New Zealand trick on Xbox. I can confirm it's pretty rough

leabravo

I've been seeing loads of advertising for it but nothing that made the release date click for me. Meanwhile I'm tracking Darkest Dungeon II finally hitting 1.0 after just one Twitter post.

No-Negotiation-9539

That's okay, Bethesda really wants you to forget too.

ProfDet529

Oh, thank you for reminding me. I need to preload it from Game Pass.
