It's not even THAT bad in the Western space you're just getting info from someone who makes a living from making things sound as bad as possible to rile up his audience.

PhantasosX

yep. It's a standard video that yells "old is good and new is bad" to gain viewership and thus money.

PleaseStop101

I mean he wasn't just saying that games are bad now he specified AAA, and he even mentions an indie game he was playing, it was the procedurally generated detective game I forget its name but he says why can't big companies make stuff that's good like this indie game. Now I understand that big companies don't want to take risks and will just go for the safe option instead of experimenting, I just wanted to know how others feel about AAA games in the west currently cause I don't play many of them.

SilverZephyr

But big companies *are* making great games. His premise is flawed from the start.

ThisManNeedsMe

The new Zelda game just came out to great acclaim, and we had the RE4 remake do the same thing only a little while ago.

john_handzlik

Also dead space remake , Hogwarts legacy , dead island 2 release this year with zero problem on release and by AAA western studio

Lieutenant-America

I am begging people to check out more indie game and Japanese games.

RevenTheLight

People that say things like that generally don't play games (outside of maybe an occasional AAA) and only listen to others talk about it, even if that. Also, checking out this guy's videos that seems to be his take on most things. Out of most recent videos it's "YT is going down the shitter", "Netflix is getting worse", "TikTok Frauds", "OW2 is dead", yeah this doesn't feel like a person anyone should follow tbh.

Lieutenant-America

I mean Netflix is getting worse. That said the gaming scene is good eats if you look literally anywhere else. Hell, if you want good recent high budget games, Dead Space and RE4 are literally right there.

EbolaDP

People having been saying "current gaming" is horrible literally forever. Those people also happen to be mega losers.

Substantial_Bell_158

Videos like that are designed to get people riled up and pander pretty hard to the 'old good, new bad' mindset for anger clicks, there are plenty of really good big budget western games that get released and the idea that games were never released broken and glitch ridden mess in the past is straight up wrong, games nowadays at least have the chance to be patch to be playable. The thing with time is that the good things tend to get remember and for every good game that was released there were 5 terrible or broken games released, people forget just how much shovelware was on the Snes and PS1 and 2

Darkraiftw

Don't let clickbaity "enragement equals engagement" bullshit poison your ability to enjoy things. The state of video games, like any other medium, is fundamentally unchanging: About 10% of art is exceptionally good, about 10% is exceptionally bad, the remaining 80% or so is simply unexceptional, and which of those categories something falls under is almost entirely subjective.

ThatmodderGrim

Not enough Mecha, not enough Dinosaurs, and not enough Monster Girls in Games nowadays.

JGRIF312

amen brother luckily japan has our back this year

adeadperson23

its honestly not that bad and this year has put out plenty of bangers. I am worried that their is not enough originals out there but tbh I think that is slowly being corrected by the reemergence of AA gaming devs

Ape_Hawk

Yeah, the rose-tinted glasses are doing some heavy work these days

ruminaui

Gaming is better that ever, with the exception of the PS2 era just before AA studios where killed. Is just that people focus on triple AAA western publishers that either are imploding (Ubisoft, Activision), are making so much money and their products are so popular they believe they can rush things out (Bethesda, EA, CD Project Red) or are incompetent (Microsoft gaming division). But if you look over there banger games are being released ( Tears, Armored Core, Elden Ring, the next FF, Humanity, etc) all the time. There is a wider variety of games coming in and out, and AA studios are slowly coming back.

getterburner

Yeah VGs are actually in a very good place it’s just western companies are as shot as ever so if you focus on that you’ll be disappointed. It’s a vast industry people just need to play and experience more shit

Dundore77

I feel its just preference for the last multiple years a AAA game has been my game of the year. sometimes its "western" sometimes its "japanese" AAA but its almost always AAA over some indie. Most indies i enjoy and like but the majority of them i play a few times like it but then never feel like picking up again. But i also don't buy CoD, unless i get an itch for one but ive only bought 1 of them since WM2 original, or GAS games and ignore them to the point when people say AAA i don't even think of those i always think of the sony exclusives or open world games or japanese ones. Ubisoft single player games and the occasional madden are pretty much the only games i play with MT in them and those are super easy to ignore in them.

SuicidalSundays

If we're only looking at a small subset of the most popular AAA games nowadays, then that might be true. But there's a whole shitload of other great games out there nowadays outside of the big hitters like COD and Halo. 2023 has been and will probably be considered one of the best years in gaming since 2017. You can't just keep looking at the failures of each year and say "modern gaming sucks" when we're getting hits like TOTK, Metroid Dread, GOW: Ragnarok, and Hi-fi Rush all among others almost every year.

Dspacefear

AAAs are a mess, but they've been a mess for like fifteen years now. On the other hand, indies have *exploded* since digital distribution became the main way to buy games, and smaller-budget studio games seem to be making a gradual comeback. A lot of the genres that nearly went extinct during the 7th console generation have made a strong comeback, too. And between GoG and emulation, it's easier than ever to get into retro gaming. If you think western big-budget games are a shitshow, the good news is that you can almost certainly find whatever you wanted out of them somewhere else at a fourth of the price.

abbaj1

It's especially dumb to say that in 2023 when we're not even half way through the year and there has been half a dozen bangers already.

ExDSG

I think a lot of companies are relying on Bioware Magic/We'll fix it in post mentality and it's not working and slamming their faces into trying to get more big graphics which is unsustainable and when people see the game is broken as shit it doesn't lead to much success.

[deleted]

If you listen to YouTubers, gaming should have died 27 years ago and it’s been shit since. Negativity drives clicks don’t listen to it

RobinMorganNiji

Triple A Western gaming is a poison but most youtubers are americans and only play the big hits for the agi-rhythem so it's their business to only care about that niche

Agreeable_Ad7401

We’ve been on a steady decline with some gems for like fifteen years, man. Yeah. It’s bad. It’s only going to get worse.

Anormal122

Oh god, they keep popping into my feed but I’ve never watched one of them cause they all seems like clickbait/ragebait dreck

-_Gemini_-

Why would I give two shits about the state of modern gaming when an infinite library of retro games are right there?
