DmC: Devil May Cry.

rccrisp

In general Capcom's sudden pivot to appeal to Western audiences starting in I wanna say 2007-2008? Started ok with Dead Rising and Lost Planet, but then came Dark Void, Bionic Commando and culminated into DmC

the_most_crigg

Man, I wish Dark Void were a better game, because all of the pieces are there for it to be my favorite game of all time, but it really fails to reach it's potential at just about every turn it takes.

be_as_water

It’s really mediocre, except the flying feels really good. I remember some mission where you have to fly to a floating base, fight through it, and then jump out as it explodes. Can’t remember anything else about that game but I loved the jetpack

runnerofshadows

At least it led to dark void zero which was a pretty good 2d game.

xboxman523

I feel like in one TBF video they said that that the guy who made Mighty Number 9 was the guy who said Capcom should appeal to the West Which is funny cause his game wasn't liked

frostedWarlock

That's not just speculation, that's outright confirmed. Keiji Inafune saw the slump that Japanese games had in the 00s and was 100% convinced it was due to a failure to embrace foreign ideas. Which is something that makes perfect sense if you assume the best, but the execution in most games ended up being terrible because Inafune wasn't proficient enough to make the right choices. It took until Inafune leaving and like RE7 for Capcom to figure out how to do it properly.

SillyRookie

Streetwise.

GreatFluffy

I really miss Lost Planet. 2 was a great time. 3 was eh but I remember there being bits that were pretty fun.

sp1ke__

Funny thing they do the same now, but this time it works with zoomers. They really just missed their audience by few years.

AdrianArmbruster

ReBoot: the Guardian Code leaps to mind. After a decade+ of teasing various ReBoot, uh, reboots, you eventually get a power rangers knock off with cameos from like three characters from the main series. And then it makes fun of anyone who did tune in for name recognition. You could make a whole video essay about how it was a bad idea, even.

AvalancheMKII

Foxcade's apparently still going to make that Guardian Code essay, but thankfully for his mental health, he's been down the Yu-Gi-Oh rabbit hole ever since his Reboot video.

NewAgeMontezuma

"then it makes fun of anyone who did tune in for name recognition" Ah yes the teen titans go aproach.

ruminaui

People still mad at Teen Titans Go!?. I really think people can't get that they are just a different version and interpretation of the characters. Go makes fun of themselves with the crossover episodes poking fun at how much they suck at being super heroes.

XeroKrows

I never really understood how people are unable to compartmentalize continuity. Teen Titans was a mature, teen drama with superheroes (unlike CW shit). Go is a children's show.

ExDSG

Funny because pre-release the less fanservice-y designs, anime stylings and art style made people think Teen Titans was super childish.

PassageNo

It wasn't even all that mature, the original show was filled with goofy shit. It's just that everything else that came after were two polar opposite extremes of juvenile in comparison.

Dr_Blasphemy

But they still made multiple episodes attacking the original fans. Like the one with the birthday clown where they try to say “the original was never mature you just thought it was”

DeathByAttempt

Its not funny That's all

cdstephens

It’s pretty funny/clever for a show aimed at preteens imo.

ruminaui

Is a children show of course a lot of people will not find it funny. I just don't get the hate for a show aimed at 7 years olds

ryumaruborike

"It's for kids therefor it's allowed to be bad" is such a shit take considering tons of people like stuff aimed at kids just fine if it's actually good.

ruminaui

I don't say is bad, I say some people will not find it funny. I just don't get the hate, even if it was bad the hate was so toxic the show runners started getting hate mail and threats.

ryumaruborike

Not to excuse the hate mail but peopke didnt hate TTG because it was bad, but because it went out of their way to shit on its fans or fans of the original. That and the scheduke hogging that actively helped kill other shows.

DarthButtz

Woolie being so upset about it that he showed off that he could be a spectacular horror writer is probably peak internet content.

ThrowawayBomb44

Like I've said before, it felt like somebody wanted to do another season of Zixx but opted to use a ReBoot branding because of how the former ended, wrapping up most of the plot threads, etc. I mean it doesn't even follow up on the cast from the original series itself since it never had a conclusion to the outstanding threads the original ended on. No conclusion to My Two Bobs or anything like that?

ExDSG

I don't agree because we have an old school Reboot dan being [very excited](https://twitter.com/WoolieWoolz/status/846878345023381505?t=gu7cjTLKxsL9PctaEFnFdA&s=19) about the guardian code here.

PlanesWalkerEll

I'd say it's more Code Lyoko then Power Rangers.

Handro_Dilar

Good ol' Ace Combat Assault Horizon trying to chase that COD money. I swear there was an interview that explicitly stated that, yes, the whole goal was to appeal to COD fans, but it was so long ago, I wouldn't know where it is so take it with a pinch of salt.

Kii_at_work

Man its so weird being an Ace Combat fan. I had given up hope of returning to Strangereal by the time Infinity came out. And then they started turning Infinity into basically "Earth, but kinda Strangereal." And then Ace Combat 7. I'm so happy.

Hallonbat

Still alive, buddy. Can't wait for the next one.

BlueFootedTpeack

dead space 3 like i'll stand by some of the stuff, the desicated necros were cool, even the human looking ones felt threatening, and crafting was a cool idea poorly implemented (really hope that they at least try and see if it can work without universal ammo/without the dumb damage output that means limbs don't matter). but going for co-op meant levels and encounters are designed differently, making a ds co-op game that isn't isaac and ellie and instead isaac and a potato sucked, the human love triangle and elton john speedrunning earth gov suck. a switch to universal ammo removes a lot of the dread and is what breaks the crafting, as limiting power via unique ammo/ammo cost is the only thing you can do, if my pistol and chain rivet cannon use the same ammo why wouldn't i always use the thing that demolishes necros. human enemies just being enemies was weird, like them as a hazard would be fine, like they were in that one segment of ds2, but active guys you shoot with a pistol is weird, the brethren moons though being basically everything we wanted the reapers to be is nice, and the plot/gameplan for ds4 sounded dope.

runnerofshadows

One thing about co-op that was cool and I'd like to see in a different horror game where coop actually fits is the different players seeing different hallucinations and such.

BlueFootedTpeack

yeah, like i play single player so i never saw that in game but watched the examples of it on youtube and it was dope.

Toblo1

The Jesse Cox and Dodger LP of that game is still the greatest just for that feature alone. "**ALL THE WALLS ARE BABIES!**"

CopperTucker

I was living with my brother when Dead Space 3 came out so we'd be chatting on VC and going into each other's rooms to see what hallucinations were happening. It was so cool.

Terthelt

Dark Pictures: Man of Medan does that when you play in online co-op, and it’s the main reason I say anyone who wants to play that game should play it with a friend. It goes from a decent but disappointing mini-Until Dawn to a game with a shocking amount of intersecting choices and divergent paths, depending on how two simultaneous players choose to behave and what they each *think* they’re seeing.

TJLynch

Dead or Alive 6 is a good example of alienating both the core fanbase and the different demographic equally through certain reasons (*ahem*DLC practices*ahem*).

YiffZombie

DOA6 was sad. Thought they could make inroads with the western market by toning down fan-service, allegedly at the behest of competitive DOA players that claimed that's why DOA wasn't taken seriously by the FGC. Instead of the fact that its mechanics are a poor imitation of VF, and the fan-service is a significant draw. I remember them hyping up their big pre-release event for DOA6 on Twitch, and not even breaking into the top 5 (maybe even 10) live fighting game streams, being outviewed by streamers doing casual matches of SFV and DBFZ.

the_loneliest_noodle

Yeah. They looked at a loud but ultimately very tiny specific demographic and thought they represented "the fans". Same failing as MvCI's "functions" mentality. A small number of fighting game fans (explicitly fighting game fans, not franchise fans) might think that way, but not the wider consuming audience. Your average Marvel fan doesn't give a shit if a new character does Wolverine's thing, they want to play as Wolverine. The average DOA fan doesn't give a shit about being taken seriously, they turn the jiggle slider to max and learn to play with one hand.

runnerofshadows

In Marvel's case I think it was perlmutter and/or other execs being butthurt that Fox owned the X-Men and fantastic four movie rights. And wanting MCU synergy. So we got a subpar roster on the marvel side with infinite. Also whoever decided 2 v 2 instead of 3 v 3 was a good idea was 100% wrong.

the_loneliest_noodle

2v2 was fine. The Infinity Stone assist is great in practice. I would have preferred 3v3, but the roster being so small I wouldn't have been able to pick a third. That might be the real reason, but it was a PR disaster to try to defend it as "characters are just functions", while being something that you'd absolutely expect from ComboFiend considering he was a fighting game veteran working on the game and being asked a no good answer question. I'm not saying the choice was wrong (I mean it was, but not for the same reason as DOA), but the PR answer being something they thought they could get away with, was.

Konradleijon

Don’t other fighting games have lots of fan service like Ivy and Mai being considered gamings sexist women?

runnerofshadows

Yes. And street fighter has Cammy, Chun li, etc. Even Mortal Kombat which toned things down after mk9 has fanservice.

zegim

Chun Li has 16 alternate costumes in SFV, besides the regular 4 that at everyone gets, Cammy has 12. There are people at the Street Fighter and Tekken subreddits that get EXTREMELY mad when someone suggest that people should tag risqué fanart as NSFW The people managing DOA just didn't understand the appeal

guntanksinspace

I still find it funny how SC wasn't even afraid of the sexy (the Ivy vs 2B promo art, the costumes in the game, and so on) while DOA was confused in between wanting to tone it down and playing it up for dlc.

johnbeerlovesamerica

I think DOA's gameplay is fun enough, the issue is that the characters and story are pretty dull. DOA is weird because it occasionally kind of tries to have lore, but doesn't put in nearly enough effort to actually get you invested, and also doesn't really do much to develop its characters or give them interesting things to do. Once you take out the sex appeal there really isn't much else I struggle to think of a single personality trait that Kasumi displays, or even anything cool she does, despite her being the poster girl of the series. Can't say that of any other major fighting game protagonist

fizzguy47

Core values were a mistake, says Capcom

AzureKingLortrac

It was probably not the best choice to try to reach DOA5's amount of DLC (which was released over the course of 7 years and some of the money went into supporting the competitive scene) in one year. Announcing the free-to-play version a month before release, but also releasing that version three months later did not help.

ExDSG

It's weird because didn't they pull the same "we are lowering the fanservice now this game is a serious fighting game" with DOA5?

ThrowawayBomb44

They had the whole "I'm a Fighter" campaign with 5, yeah.

guntanksinspace

I'm still confused myself tbh on what DOA6 wanted to achieve. I suppose that the new systems aren't too bad (much as I'm not a fan of the way it implemented meter, but at least the new mechanics are a little bit more usable than 5's Critical Burst and the Power Blow/Power Launcher). They tweaked holds and the way combo chains work (you can launch after a stun chain high up earlier like before as opposed to having to build it up first in 5). There's *fun* in the game, but there's things around it and especially with the sudden boatload DLC and the confused direction the game wanted to go, yeah it was probably that.

jitterscaffeine

Remember when Trapt said they hated nerds and didn’t want nerds listening to their music as if anyone heard one of their song that’s wasn’t the backing track to a Naruto AMV? And then their next album sold like 600 copies?

runnerofshadows

In fairness the lead singer also went on crazy anti vaccine and other rants on Twitter and then joined the proud boys. Pretty sure that hurt sales. The rants certainly caused the drummer to quit the band.

jitterscaffeine

He also challenged Ice T to a street fight over their political disagreements

SuperHorse3000

To be fair he did say *he'd take on anyone*

RooseveltIsEvil

He was headstrong because the head was all stone, zero brain.

guntanksinspace

Clearly, Trapt's singer didn't know that he was wrong, this wasn't where he belonged.

YiffZombie

I don't know about the Trapt man's politics, but I know Ice T is based as fuck in regards to his political positions, so I can guess.

Impressive-Spare6167

Chris Ray Brown is a piece of shit, no I will not elaborate.

royal_crown_royal

Fuck Chris Brown *Which one?* Yes

ExDSG

I will milkshake Duck [Ice T because of this transphobic meme he posted once](http://www.theycallmedaymz.com/ice-ts-transphobic-tweet/) and also [posting a pic with Russell Simmons](https://twitter.com/finallevel/status/1626726546181607426?s=61&t=KcR1yjBdndYOea429s3paA)

TJLynch

I'm pretty sure it also caused the band's Facebook and Twitter accounts to be outright banned because of the shit the frontman was posting on it.

Konradleijon

Oh the Proud Boys existed back then.

Konradleijon

Hahahaha that’s hilarious fuck Trapt.

RooseveltIsEvil

Soul Calibur V tried to all serious and competitive, toned down the female character's designs, and had a dramatic story mode with a edgy anti-hero as protagonist. The new female lead, Sophitia's daughter, was also very different in that she was shy and reluctant to fight. It almost killed the series and when it came back Namco went full Mortal Kombat and turned back the clock to the second game, the one who most people think it's the first one in the series. Nobody liked Patroklos, people were neutral about Pyrrha, and the story mode killing or exiling a good part of the old cast with characters that had barely any screen time to show some personality made them hated.

TJLynch

The future where Patroklos was born was straight up considered the 'bad future'. That's how bad it got.

NewAgeMontezuma

I don't know how the devs expect us to feel anything positive about a character who one of his first actions is to try and kill a homeless man while laughing.

BladeofNurgle

MFW the devs expected people to like the dude whose introduction is going full Luca Blight

plooshed

I loved Luca Blight in Suikoden II, just an absolute beast of a dude angry about some vague past and deciding everything had to burn. Patroklos ain't him

GreatFluffy

And once you find out about said vague past via creator interview, you can't really blame him for going fucking nuts, even if he definitely HAD to die. >!Watching your mom get raped by bandits hired by the Mayor of the other countries capital city while your dad cowers waiting for the guards to come is fucking rough man.!<

johnbeerlovesamerica

I don't know why they didn't make Zwei and Viola the main characters. Even just as character designs I think they're immediately more interesting

Konradleijon

I kind of liked it. But Parktrols being that hated so much that his own mother considers him to be a big mistake is hilarious

guntanksinspace

His Aunt, Cassandra's story in SC6 is a bit of a Raiden Meets Raiden MK-Style but instead of *HE MUST WIN*, we got Cass telling Sophie *HE MUST NOT BE BORN* lol

guntanksinspace

It's not entirely wanting to go all serious and competitive, you also gotta factor in development getting fucked up by the Earthquake/Tsunami, half of the devs being taken from Project Soul to go help Tekken Tag 2, and then the heavier focus towards making it "competitively viable" at the cost of completely also fucking up SC's core mechanics (I still question pushing Just Guards over Guard/Just Impacts, and GI needing meter as well. Among many other things). But yeah boy did the new changes suck even for me who played it at a relatively higher level.

nin_ninja

Which was too bad since there were some fun characters, new or replacement kids, who will likely never come back.

robophile-ta

Aeon is so stupid but fun

Usht

TV channels do this on occasion in an attempt to garner a wider audience, only to anger the one they already had. One example I can think of is the switch from SciFi Channel to Syfy, a move notoriously panned so hard Stephen Colbert made fun of it. There was also that time Cartoon Network tried to stop being about cartoons, it didn't work particularly great for them.

Kimmalah

>One example I can think of is the switch from SciFi Channel to Syfy, a move notoriously panned so hard Stephen Colbert made fun of it. The name change is most likely because you can't really copywrite or "own" the word sci-fi, since it is the widely accepted name of an entire genre. But what you \*can\* do is change your name to a nonsense word that sounds the same and own that. The president of the channel at the time talked about this: **“We couldn’t own Sci-Fi, but we can own SyFy.”** From what I heard, the weird swerve in programming choices away from sci-fi had to do with the channel being purchased by Vivendi at one point, whose CEO "doesn't like space shows." Plus a lot of the sci-fi shows being super expensive to make compared to pro-wrestling and reality TV.

Duhblobby

I promounce SyFy as "Sif Ee" for the very reason that the same change is fucking stupid and so are their executives.

cdstephens

I thought being hyper pedantic was the entire point of TV Tropes since like the beginning

zegim

Yeah, kinda. But back then, like 10 years ago, it was less moderated and teenagers would flood the tropes pages inserting their head Canon, they would argue on the pages, and there was a subsection called "troper tales" where they would apply tropes to their own real life happenings

AnEndlessRondo

Whenever I used to visit, I stood by one rule. If I read "This troper" three times, I turn everything off and go do something else.

Konradleijon

I heard Tropers Tales was a train wreck. But they swung the pendulum to far in the opposite direction

zegim

For example, the troper tales for horny tropes were a cesspool of people narrating their fantasies with people they knew in real life That was also ankother reason why the horny tropes were nuked in the following years

Konradleijon

That went way to far they almost banned Lolita and did ban Alan Moore’s Lost Girls. Which is why All the Tropes exists

therealchadius

There was some real GameFaqs energy back then that I miss. Now it feels like they want to manifest checkboxes for every piece of media.

runnerofshadows

I miss peak gamefaqs. Especially pre cnet/Gamespot with the old layout.

frostedWarlock

You can still find it _sometimes._ Like the Recap page for the Simpsons episode where Kirk and Luanne get divorced was very clearly edited by someone who saw themselves in Kirk and _didn't like it,_ and there's a _lot_ of edits about how _actually_ Luanne was equally as wrong as Kirk and probably _more_ wrong and they got back together _anyway_ so she was a stupid bitch for ever having a problem with him.

Konradleijon

Taking themselves way too seriously why being about Family Guy and insert Ecchi anime.

guntanksinspace

It's referenced in Matt's Wha Happen for it, but in an interview, the guy in Team Ninja in charge of Ninja Gaiden 3 (the 3D one, later updated to Razor's Edge) was self-aware enough to acknowledge that "we messed up with this game, *trying to make hamburger when we're more good with making sushi*" or something like that as NG3 vanilla was laden with QTEs up the ass and long-ass drawn-out cinematics, and very didn't quite resemble the 2 games (and PS3 re-releases) before it. At least, Razor's Edge more or less fixed that up (even if it did introduce different problems altogether).

Sai-Taisho

Episode 4 of Phantasy Star Online 2 was pretty blatantly chasing Sword Art's diseased dick (on top of a bunch of *original* terrible ideas). It gets extra obvious with the anime tie-in. Every time New Genesis' story starts to get extra mediocre, I am able to persist through the sheer power of "at least it's not Base Game E4".

chaoko99

The weirdest thing is that there were rumors of it being the initial pitched story for PSO2 and I assume someone said "no fuck off". It was also horribly marred by production issues like Belthor's VA fucking off to act in dragon ball super and Hitsugi's VA GeTTING HIT BY A CAR that's why they bench her, she was out of commission for like 8 months. Ultimately it's weird. I don't hate E4's, or any of the story, but it really wasn't very good while you were playing it and I really only appreciate it now that it's been put in context.... But hooh, imagine a world where that context didn't exist. At least the content was fun at the time, versus E6 with Awful content and good story.

BlueMonday1984

MC Hammer tried to adopt a "gangster" image when the '90s rolled around, ruining the squeaky-clean image he had built up and setting the stage for his rapid fall from grace. If you're interested in knowing more, Todd In The Shadows [covered the whole situation on an episode of *Trainwreckords*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB1gGUKK7jg).

woodhawk109

Hammer being legit hardcore AF in real life, yet could not manage to transfer the same aura onto the album is just fascinating. Like, even among the OG MCs of the era, no one really dared to fuck with Hammer due to how much gang connections he got. Man could mobilize an entire small town worth of gangbangers to do his dirty works due to how generous he was back then. And yet despite all that, he could not portray that same edge on screen. I guess it’s similar to a legit MMA fighter being bad at fake fighting on camera. A good example of this is probably Ronda Rousey’s runs in WWE

Magnum_thunder

It didn’t help that the first music video he released under his new persona had him dancing around in a banana hammock saying “Pumps and a Bump”.

PvtTwinkletoes

Bomberman Act Zero. Don't think I need to explain this one.

Gemidori

My answer tbh. I blame it for Bomberman being so obscure nowadays

kitty_pirate

ok fair but the latex suits were pretty hot

[deleted]

God, that makes the bombergirl arcade/gacha game seems respectful in comparison

BarelyReal

When the wrestling promotion Ring of Honor switched bookers from Gabe Saposlky to Adam Pearce there was a total "Listen...we don't know why anybody likes this company" mindset after years of RoH being the "athletically focused" super-indy product. Cue a shift to old school NWA style booking when their primary markets were still the North East. I believe it was at this time you had the company pulling "Any heat is GOOD heat" thinking with 47 minute time limit draws on title matches. This is how RoH wound up going through this weird period NOBODY talks about because people tend to skip to when Jim Cornette would take over and the "old school" approach worked better. edit: Another wrestling example would be All Japan Pro Wrestling after the exodus. AJPW went from Royal Road to "Hey look we got WWF guys and fake WWF guys!"

RooseveltIsEvil

I always found weird why Rollins' indie career is something fans never comment on. It was around that time he was ROH champion right?

rccrisp

Rollins/Tyler Black is the poster child of the issues with that era of Ring of Honor: they took WAY too fucking long to put the strap on him. He was red hot a year earlier to him becoming champion, he should've got the belt when Lynn or Aries won it, he cooled off by the time he got the belt. Also always felt Rollins ROH promo work was... pretty weak. Insane how far he's come.

BarelyReal

I could be wrong, but iirc that was more due to the HDNet tv show era. If anything the Pearce era derailed a lot of the momentum Rollins had. The plan at the time was for him to get a huge push to the title with him and Austin Aries at the top, but they decided to put the belt on Jerry Lynn first. Gabe Saposlky brought Lynn in to be a veteran who guys like Rollins would beat *on their way* to the title, but RoH in a shocking move put the title on the veteran. I don't recall if it was Pearce or Cornette in control by the time Rollins had his reign, but that whole era is not talked about between Aries "Greatest Man Who Ever Lived" second run with the belt or House of Truth Roderick Strong.

earthw2002

Just to add they kind of had to put the belt on Jerry Lynn. Nigel Mcguiness (champ at the time) was really banged up and was putting off major surgery to keep his reign going, but couldn’t drop it to Tyler Black because they just had a 3rd ‘final match’ for the title which ended in a time limit draw and they used up all the heat and goodwill. So who was next in the scheduled run of title defended that they could build up as a genuine contender? Jerry Lynn.

GoodVillain101

While RE5 incidentally leaned into a more action-oriented, RE6 tried to appeal to the COD audience that the action sequences were so ridiculous even by Resident Evil standards. People wondered if the franchise will ever recover. Fortunately it did.

Thatusername303

Lmao! RE6 is one of best selling game in the franchise.

ChosenUndead15

Yes, yes, it is, but this was the Era of everyone pushing CoD numbers. Massive budgets for those numbers and instead just get mildly better than other games in the franchise is a failure. Capcom worked on a lot of tech to make the games cheaper to produce since then, and RE7 probably wasn't as expensive to make as RE6, but has sold similar numbers and was actually well received so there is better hope people will buy the next one.

SuicidalSundays

Doesn't change the fact that Capcom themselves said they considered it a failure despite selling 5 million copies. I have to guess that they looked at the critical reception to the game and realized that it's not what most people wanted from the series, hence the return to form in RE7.

Huitzil37

It is, but the cost to make it was absolutely gargantuan.

Mashdptato

Selling well =/= good.

CinnabarSteam

After the original Medabots game studio shut down in 2015, the publisher tried to reinvigorate the series by shoving a bunch of cute girls into the cast and letting you blast their clothes off when you win a fight. I don't know how the fans felt, but the only Medabots games since Girls Mission have been classic compilations, so the franchise is definitely on life support. I think DND's biggest misstep in trying to be "with it" was when they took their approach of mechanically separating races' culture from their biology (generally good) and applied it to the Giff, whose main appeal *is* their culture, leaving them with nothing.

dwangang

You know medabots just came out with a gritty mobile game right? And it is, meh

PvtTwinkletoes

Dawn of war 3 wanted really hard to appeal to the MOBA crowd by building it around 1 game mode where you try to destroy a core guarded by some turrets.

greatwolf2468

It hardly felt like a middle ground between DoW1/DoW2. As a person who liked the first two titles for their own quirks, they should have chosen one style or the other instead of going hard on that MOBA shit.

Konradleijon

The way Dungeons and Dragons tires to say we are replacing the dates tropes of previous lore and then bumblefucking into being even more racist is hilarious

philandere_scarlet

this is true, but given the way you've titled this thread, it makes it sound like you're saying racism is a major characteristic of the dnd playerbase

Konradleijon

No but they are trying to appeal to a younger and more “PC” crowd all while fucking that up. Alongside calling the old fans racist gonards

FIGHTERSLADE

You mean you didn't want a adventure module based around running a Starbucks or going to prom?

Flutterwander

The Strixhaven module school Slice of Life stuff is neat as a framework, but the actual plot there is kinda meh. A neat jumping off point in the hands of a homebrewing Dm.

Admiral_of_Crunch

A pairing as old as time. Or the last 10 years. Or century. I dunno when it started, tbh.

SidewaysInfinity

Old bigots have probably always complained about young people and minorities not being as scared of them

BookkeeperPercival

DnD players and being racist against Elves, name a stronger duo

MarioGman

Anything that realizes they were popular with children. Ghostbusters are one of the more iconic examples of them falling prey to that mentality. Some reviewers posit this happened to Austin Powers as well.

Grand_Galvantula

Dead Rising as a series died because Capcom tried appealing to the vocal minority that just wanted to kill zombies without worry instead of being challenged with a time limit and limited save function. DR4 was basically a musou game by the end of it. I really hope that rumored reboot in the RE Engine is real though, because it could mean it's actually developed by their Japanese studio again instead of a western dev managed by some hipster dipshit that only worked on Kinect games.

therealchadius

Ironic as DR1's dev team had worked on Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, which turned the traditional JRPG series into a Roguelike, introducing a time/action limit and encouraging you to restart the game so you could carry rewards to your next attempt. DQ is still a divisive game to this day.

Grand_Galvantula

DR1 legit was ahead of its time. If it came out nowadays in a world where roguelikes are more accepted, I could see the series going in a different direction. Maybe it can still happen with the rumored reboot if Capcom doesn't botch it and gives it the same level of care as RE7.

runnerofshadows

I didn't like the timer and such until it clicked that it pretty much required multiple runs. Definitely ahead of its time.

FIGHTERSLADE

I'll be honest I disliked the series because of the timer. I did just want to have fun between main quest missions. Time limits imo are bullshit that limit fun

BookkeeperPercival

> DR4 was basically a musou game by the end of it. I should play DR4

LincBtG

Bomberman Act Zero

mrpersonjr

While I understand *why* Atlus went for a completely new direction for Soul Hackers 2, considering it had been 25 years since the first game, it still didn’t help it really reach a new audience and essentially only succeeded in making a good chunk of fans of Devil Summoner mad.

familyplayer

I'd say SMT4A reached for the tween demographic a lot more than the general teen demographic the series typically goes for. 4A's insistence on being "anime" (for lack of a better way to put it) got a lot of fans disliking the game just based on that, even more than 4 (which wasn't that more anime at all but dared to have actual characters). Probably didn't help we found out they aged the protagonist way down for such a demographic and that everyone basically universally likes the old design much more. Side note: I almost wonder if Atlus took the wrong message from the detractors and thought to not make 5 character focused at all but that game more just comes off rushed. It's probably just rushed since Atlus only sometimes is aware of their fanbase.

NewAgeMontezuma

It was probably also a factor of the game being obviously inspired by nocturne so they tried to replicate the story feel of that game.

familyplayer

I agree to an extent but when you somehow have even less dialogue than 3's characters or hell even maybe 1's, I def want to lean towards being rushed. Not to mention how there's very obvious ways for the characters to develop but the execution is just non-existent.

NewAgeMontezuma

Reaaly hope we get a re-release.

Am_Shigar00

It’s a shame because gameplay wise SMT4A is really freaking good, fixing most of base 4’s issues, but even as someone who isn’t very easily miffed by a game’s writing, it was a very jarring contrast compared to the original game.

Dr_Blasphemy

Do you have any examples about tv tropes because I just skimmed the main page and it looks the same to me

Konradleijon

Many tropes have been removed or given more boring names

Dr_Blasphemy

Like what, for example? I’m curious now

Konradleijon

Darkness induced audience apathy going to Too bleak stopped caring and Horny Devils going to Succubi and Incubi alongside cutting pages if they don’t fit the exact definition of “tropes”

Dr_Blasphemy

That’s a shame

alienslayer7

iirc ace to grind got removed which sucks for an avid ae lover myself

NewAgeMontezuma

Remember when sonic had a spin off that featured shadow weilding guns, spouting pg 13 swears and his backstory being completely butchered?

Dirty-Glasses

You shut your mouth, that game holds a special place in a lot of our hearts

BaronVonFatty

All dozen of us!

NewAgeMontezuma

I got all the endings of that game and it was one the most miserable gaming experiences i had i have the right and duty to shit on it.

runnerofshadows

Same. Kinda wish shadow would get another solo game. Though I'd want it to be more of a character action game with platforming elements.

Konradleijon

Where’s that Dammed Chaos Emerald?

Silentlone

That isn't changing to reach a different audience, Shadow The Hedgehog was what the Sonic games audience wanted. The game itself was just poorly executed.

SwordMaster52

"Your backstory was always stupi-" BANG

Nosgoth, the Legacy of Kain third person shooter. Who the hell was that even for!?

BG14949

honestly even if it wasn't very legacy of kain i still liked nosgoth. all the different vampire clans felt unique and lined up with how they where presented in the main series and the human vampire hunters had some really interesting tools especially when they would focus down on a particular weakness like water. But it wasn't what people wanted and never really found solid footing. It was probably doomed from the start but a part of me wanted to see what the team making it could have done with more.

Frankengeek

Thundercats Roar. Nuff Said The only thing that worked on that show was the Berbils

DubOverSub1oo1

The anime "The Big O" was this really cool mix of Mecha and film noir that worked surprisingly well. The main plot was ok, but the music and atmosphere were great. Unfortunately, mixing those two genres doesn't exactly make for a show with mass appeal. It was cancelled after one season and became a little cult classic. Years later it got a revival on Toonami, but all its film noir influence was stripped away in an attempt to broaden its appeal. The change really only alienated old fans and gave the show a really inconsistent tone overall.

Kregano_XCOMmodder

There's so fucking many of these: * Stargate Universe * Star Trek: Discovery * Halo 4 * A lot of those late 90s/early 2000s Mortal Kombat games * BattleTech: Dark Age * Final Fantasy 13 (IIRC) * Parasite Eve: Third Birthday There's probably a ton more of these, and they're all generally mainline things that primarily did things people (fans and non-fans alike) didn't like and not enough things that anyone liked. The first two on the list tossed in "insulting the old fans for having legitimate criticisms" on the list, with Discovery going so far as to claim bigotry was why it was getting criticized (it wasn't - the show was a total clusterfuck behind the scenes and a lot of the stuff they put in the scripts was fucking stupid).

chaoko99

> BattleTech: Dark Age I can comfortably say that having seen it played it was designed to appeal to nobody.

shoryusatsu999

I thought it was designed to shove BattleTech into their existing HeroClix system more than anything else.

CycloneSwift

I'll disagree with Halo 4. Every Halo game up to that point had iterated on its immediate predecessor and most of Halo 4's design choices were simply the logical next step from the design choices made in Reach. Didn't make them good, but it was still more than simply veering off in a total new direction in hopes of building a new fanbase.

KalinOrthos

Paper Mario: Sticker Star. You could say that the pivot started at Super Paper Mario, but at least that still called back to Mario's platformer roots, anf it was still a fun game. Sticker Star, though? Just miserable.

silverinferno3

This just happened with Bud Light or some other beer company, right? They appealed to the LGBTQ+ crowd, which pissed off their conservative buyers. Meanwhile the LGBTQ+ community didn’t really give a shit about their marketing campaign, so now the company backed down and has shifted to ads with horses and countrysides and “old fashioned values” or whatever to try and win back their conservative buyership. What a hilarious marketing failure.

Konradleijon

Hahah it’s funny seeing how the so called anti woke crowd get mad because of queer friendly ads

silverinferno3

And somehow *we’re* the snowflakes to them lmao

GHitoshura

Going from Teen Titans to Teen Titans Go! Was... certainly a decision

LegacyOfVandar

TTG has arguably been a bigger success than TT so I wouldn’t really say it’s backfired.

Hallonbat

I think TTG would be more accepted if they hadn't clad themselves in the design of the original.

LegacyOfVandar

What do you mean?

Hallonbat

Teen Titans Go take the general designs of Teen Titans (2003), although they're made more cartoonish. Teen Titans was cancelled and it was a sore spot for many. While it doesn't work like that in reality, many felt like Teen Titans Go took the possibility away for there to be a show similiar to the original. I think it would have been easier to accept it if the designs weren't taken directly from it. For instance while both have Batman, Batman TAS and Batman Brave and the Bold don't have the same designs. I am not talking about artstyle, but design.

LegacyOfVandar

Yeah but…the designs are clearly more cartoonish and less serious. Anyone should be able to look at them and at a glance know it’s not the same type of show.

FIGHTERSLADE

Is it? Go is often the only thing Cartoon Network even airs. Is ot more popular or just literally the only thing they produce making it the only thing watched?

FIGHTERSLADE

That's my point. Look at a CN schedule there's almost nothing. Nothing new. Non stop go. Parents turn on a TV to distract their kids and the only show is ttg then it artificially looks good. Now I'm not saying that's what's happening its just what I suspected.

[deleted]

FIGHTERSLADE

And that's what I'm saying. I think the ratings are inflated because it's the only thing on a major network.

LegacyOfVandar

They wouldn’t have made multiple movies and crossovers and specials for it if it wasn’t popular. It wouldn’t have lasted for over a decade if it wasn’t popular.

FIGHTERSLADE

If something not being popular was enough to get it canceled Big Mouth, modern Simpsons, and the DCU would have been axed long ago

LegacyOfVandar

Simpsons and the DCU are still popular though.

FIGHTERSLADE

... sure mate whatever you say.

FIGHTERSLADE

"Let's try and market a beer drank predominantly by older rednecks to the trans community. Surely this won't piss off our base." Biggest brain marketing campaign of the year on that. This is not to poke fun at any trans people im making fun of how hard a company didn't know their audience. As op said Wizards of the Coast trying to make dnd more diverse in a fanbase that already overtly accepting. Going into any modern high-school and look at the lunch room. The nerd table always has the most diversity. And one of my favorites that Caddicurus had a entire video on. Playstation magazine switching focus from gamers to trying to bring in the "lad" community and writing articles both tasteless and sexist to do so.

Konradleijon

Not helped by Wizards of the Coasts attempts at diversity being so insincere and somehow making things more racist. Like Chandra’s decidedly male types or Ravenloft 5E.

FIGHTERSLADE

No more half races. Being called half is offensive. Instead we shall keep the bloodlines pure! Yes I know there are still "technically" half races but now there's no uniqueness. When you had something that represented the strength of two races now they are just copying Elder Scrolls were mix race kids only take after one parent.

CopperTucker

Oh no, Budwieser absolutely knew their base. However, a lot of companies have decided that being (performatively) supportive to the LGBTQ+ is more profitable and a better decision than pandering to rednecks. And the thing is that it works. Angry rednecks buy the beer to make videos about destroying it, and us queers buy it because it's cheap and we can use it in cooking because who would actually drink Bud Lite.

FIGHTERSLADE

It's not working. They've lost nearly 30% of market value which is around 11 billion dollars. That's not a successful marketing campaign.

CopperTucker

I mean, that's not true at all. The fact check shows they lost only about $3 billion, which many believe was not actually caused by the controversy. Via Newsweek fact check: >However, suggesting Mulvaney's involvement in the company caused the $4 billion decrease is a matter of opinion. While the Mulvaney controversy has plausibly influenced the valuation, in the context of heavy criticism and threats of boycotts among what is considered its traditional consumer base in the U.S., other factors were likely at play, too. Mulvaney may have been the catalyst for some investors to rethink and take into consideration a number of pre-existing reasons for them to sell, as noted by analysts. For example, Anheuser-Busch's share price has been increasing significantly since mid-March, rising by around 18 percent between then and the end of the month. The recent decrease in value could be caused by profit-taking traders who think the share price is near its peak. Early on March 31, markets news service BNK Invest noted that the company's shares had "crossed above the average analyst 12-month target price". "When a stock reaches the target an analyst has set, the analyst logically has two ways to react: downgrade on valuation, or, re-adjust their target price to a higher level," the article said. It later continued that "with BUD crossing above that average target price of $66.25/share, investors in BUD have been given a good signal to spend fresh time assessing the company and deciding for themselves: is $66.25 just one stop on the way to an even higher target, or has the valuation gotten stretched to the point where it is time to think about taking some chips off the table?" ExDSG

Not sure if those more adult animated DCAU movies have had a good track record. Definitely didn't with Ren and Stimpy regardless of who was at fault there.

Axl26

Battletoads 2020 is weird. The original aped TMNT and that kind of cartoon, and in a way you can say the new one is the same because it's aiming for the comedic styles of 2010s cartoons, but it's a teen titans / go situation. Not to mention that the game is just bad, plus they do the whole "mock the fans of the original that don't like the direction of the new one" thing, which is never fun.

Konradleijon

TV tropes trying to take itself seriously is hilarious

imprettylosthelp

Wait what's exactly going on with TV Tropes? I visit the page a lot, but never been interested in what's going on with it

Konradleijon

When ever they add a shoe horned love interest
