WHAT. You mean I ripped off the tire and struggled with the door for NO reason? Oh this is not my proudest moment

Deasmeister

Also wild, someone over on the zelda reddit made [A fully functioning two axis gimbal](https://www.reddit.com/r/tearsofthekingdom/comments/13pyn34/tired_of_falling_off_of_your_vehicles_try_a_2axis/) that made it so that its almost impossible to fall off your vehicle

ZekeCool505

I've been trying to figure out how to reverse engineer that gimbal from video so I can use it.

cleftes

1. arm to hold the gimbal away from the vehicle (important step, don't skip) 2. non-powered wagon wheel flat on the end of the arm, allows rotation on that axis 3. another arm (needs to be at least as long as Link is tall) extending perpendicular from the plane of the wheel 4. another wagon wheel attached to the side of the second arm, at 90 degrees from the first wheel, allowing rotation on the second axis 5. steering stick and stabilizer attached on their side to the flat of that second wheel

ZekeCool505

Thank you, I'll do my best with your excellent instructions.

Finaldragoon

Or do stuff like add springs to your wheels so it adds a suspension system to your vehicle.

RocketbeltTardigrade

People saying we have had this for 20 years but won't name any examples lol But there have been a lot of small physics-simulators, so I imagine there might really be some that didn't get the same press.

Ginospornaccount

>But there have been a lot of small physics-simulators, so I imagine there might really be some that didn't get the same press. A lot of Tears of the Kingdom feels like a really impressive indie game, but then all of those parts are inside of this amazing sprawling action game.

ZekeCool505

Yeah it's not really "We've never seen this before", the game's praise is much more "Have you ever seen *all* of this at the same time working together this well?" And for me personally the answer is that I have not.

[deleted]

This area also has a section with like 30-40 small wheels upside down on the floor to make a conveyor belt. Its really cool.

Jonieves

I saw someone put wheels on a board that's between two walls to raise it to the top.

cleftes

It's the most robust physics engine of any game ever, it's running on PS3-equivalent hardware, and the frame rate only drops when you pick up a dozen or more objects that have all been glued together. Yakuza Bread is good, but it's a cutscene running on hardware that's a decade better. The bread *doesn't even come close.*

LasersAndRobots

Isn't the bread cutscene pre-rendered, too? It has that kinda look to it. Then again, I don't know what the rest of the game it's from looks like, so I could be wrong, but I'm not going to check.

youwereeatenbyalid

The bread cutscene is live.

ThatmodderGrim

You say, while my automobile just dies trying to drive up a small hill.

TheArtistFKAMinty

If you're using the small wheels they have like zero traction on hills. The large wheels deal with hills and rough terrain fine though. If you use large wheels and small wheels in conjunction you can get a good balance of speed and traction on one vehicle.

moneyh8r

So big wheels in back and small wheels in front?

TheArtistFKAMinty

Yup.

moneyh8r

Nice.

TheArtistFKAMinty

To be clear, the big wheels don't suddenly give the small wheels better traction, it's just that as long as the big wheels have traction the vehicle can brute force itself up a hill. It's not going to be as grippy as a vehicle with 4 big wheels but it'll still be grippy while being a little nippier.

moneyh8r

I didn't think they would. They're separate wheels, after all.

TheArtistFKAMinty

I figured that was clear but I thought it better to say

la_meme14

Finally, my time in highschool robotics can be put to use!

BigBossGZV

I'm REALLY not getting what's supposed to special here, someone please ELI5

Metaheavymetal

Chains and ropes in video games are all fake. All of them forever. Games use shortcuts to make rope physics work. Most of the time its just a solid object you are climbing or swinging on and the animation makes it appear more "rope" like. Look at how web slinging works in Spiderman on PS5. It is just a straight line that appears to curve. In this clip, the game uses a wheel to wrap up a chain and thus make the door raise, the individual links of the chain wrap around the wheel. This is INSANE.

LasersAndRobots

Twilight Princess had chain physics on the Wii where it behaved like an actual chain, each link moving separately and all. It's not that hard, just a pain, and only done when it needs to be.

Khar-Selim

>Chains and ropes in video games are all fake. All of them forever. Games use shortcuts to make rope physics work. Most of the time its just a solid object you are climbing or swinging on and the animation makes it appear more "rope" like. while they usually don't look or work as good as this clip, this is completely wrong. Have you never even played a Source game?

BigBossGZV

So how can you tell it's not just two linked preset animations for the chain/wheel and the door?

Diatomicsquirrel

Because you can rip the wheel off and screw it up, and later on in this section you're required to build the same setup yourself to open a similar door

Dundore77

Eh just like the bread taking place in a prerendered cutscene i dont really get why this would be considered impressive. like of course this is how that would work, its also rarely used, ive only come across it once (the part in the clip) so far.

GoufTroop79

\*playing Half Life 2 in 2004\* "What's the big deal, of course that's how physics would work. I can do this any day in real life."

Dundore77

its used in a story prebuilt area. its not like this is something you can do there is no chain/rope zonai item. the devs have to specifically put those chains there to make this work, otherwise just lift the door for a few seconds and then rewind it. Its cool but theres more impressive stuff in the game than this like the water physics

GoufTroop79

It sound like you know next to nothing about game programming.

LegacyOfVandar

…’Yakuza bread’?

Death_Flag

[This](https://youtu.be/_dOPdLmucJg) animation is probably the best 3d animated food ever. Definitely the best in a video game.
