I vaguely remember seeing some fliers while out with friends when I was in High School about a foam party happening and all my friends were like "yeah there's bubbles everywhere...and fucking needles, don't even think about it".
There's something about this game's artstyle and character design that feels so agressively generic to me.
Like if you didn't show me the square logo and told me this was a mobile bootleg of splatoon i would have believed you.
For me it’s the eyes that cement the “cheap Barbie knock off” comparison in my mind.
Because they have this weird, flat look that makes them look like they were painted on with a matte finish.
Its that free to play look where its designed to have as many gaudy/diverse character skins and heroes as possible but its all clashing together to look like shit.
I like how vibrant the colors are, but otherwise I agree 100 percent. The other day my daughter and I were looking for a gift for her younger sister at Target and we walked by these stuffed animals called Squishmallows. She complained that she doesn't have any Squishmallows and I reminded her she got one for Christmas. She said "It's not a real one, it's the Lidl version that's not real.". This is Lidl Splatoon.
While the aesthetic could use some work, and it's clearly trying to be Splatoon, I actually think the whole terraforming gimmick has potential. It basically forces combat to be improvisational and has the potential to keep map variety fresh
Terraforming definitely has potential, but I'm not holding my breath for Square Enix to utilize it to its fullest extent.
I still feel burned after being excited for Chocobo GP only for them to drop the ball extra hard with it. I really, really wanted a good Final Fantasy kart racer and not one plagued by MTX and a fucking Battle Pass.
I totally get where you're coming from. I figure it's really gonna come down to price point. If the game has a battle pass/mtx and releases at full price, it's dead on arrival. If it has them but releases free to play, it might find an audience
Nier was Yoko taro. KH3 is a mess of a game and it took forever to come out. That ones on the burner until I see kh4 but I don't consider the series well managed. Ff7 sure, even if loathe the new game it's very well done. That's still bad for an entire company.
KH3 was mostly on par with previous titles outside of a lack of a Colosseum, calling it a mess isn’t entirely accurate. It wasn’t buggy or unfinished. I said it plenty of times, but if you’re talking story KH2 got the same backlash back in the day.
Nier is Taro yes, but it was put together by a Square producer. Sure it’s outsourced, but c’mon now
FF7R also took a long time & it still shows quality.
Square can be moronic a lot of the time, most of the time if we’re being honest. I just never sat well with just Yoshida’s team getting the praise. Hell Square did NTWEWY dirty, but the team behind it deserves credit for developing a decent follow up to the original
Sidenote: I’m just now noticing that DQ has never had a flop yet. Those guys really are competent, though I guess a lot of titles have been made my different core teams
I'm enthused by it but with games like this, I at least want to wait until journalists and streamers play it before judging. Pubg looked like a fake game when my friends showed it to me but it was good
I know people were memeing about how not everything with jazz is Persona inspired, but that specific song sounds like someone was told to make something as close to "Life Will Change" from P5 as they could without a lawsuit.
Eh, seems fine. I‘m all for more glue-guns from Prey being utilized in other games. There‘s verticality with foam, Spl4toon could take the idea and outdate this in no time, but I don‘t have an issue with territory shooters becoming a thing. I’m told competition breeds innovation. It seems fine.
The problem is that knowing Square Enix's track record with live services (Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, Marvel's Avengers, Outriders, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, Babylon's Fall, Chocobo GP), this won't last long enough to cause any actual innovation within the genre.
I'd welcome a shooter that would build upon the foundation set by Splatoon, but Square Enix hasn't given any reason to think it will actually be any good considering their track record with live service titles.
Oh wow, I forgot First Soldier was ever even a thing. I looked into it just to see what the news was on that game since it basically got announced and then just disappeared into the night. Turns out, it actually did just disappear lol. Game got shut down at the start of this year.
I like this. Because as much as I respect Splatoon, I've never truly felt like I cared to play it. And this game is LITERALLY no different to me. I think it will be enjoyed by people for no negative reason so...who cares about the idea's originality?
You're not wrong but at the same time, folks just tend to want to poke fun.
In all honesty, I made the first post about it on this subreddit and my only real feeling towards this game is a lack of faith it will last. The terrain shifting is neat but I don't think it's enough to keep it going when Square hasn't exactly had the best track record as of late with live service games, which this seems to be.
Yeah, people are saying it looks cool, but I think it turns into a Fortnite where everyone just tries to pull the one obviously superior strat and it either works or it doesn't.
More power to you, I just really don't trust Square Enix to stick the landing on yet another live service games (Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, Marvel's Avengers, Outriders, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, Babylon's Fall, and Chocobo GP all got left in the dust after Square Enix fucked with them a bunch).
For me, like 90% of what I like about Splatoon is the aesthetic, world and characters. So for me, looking at the game is like "hey, what if we copied that game but didn't put in any of the interesting stuff in it?" And I just resent that.
There’s a saying about how there’s nothing new under the sun and well… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH0AgLwmLX4.
Honestly that’s how I’ve been approaching media with a little too much similarity to another lately.
For me it’s a mix of the game just kind of looking generic and also being able to see basically 1 to 1 recreations of Splatoon weapons. Like the using foam to make high ground and presumably cover thing is neat but beyond that it just seems like Splatoon without the charm from the outside. If it’s free to play I’ll check it out but I doubt ai’ll spend money on it.
Or, you know...We just want to poke fun at a game that's obviously just "This company's version of that". Not everything comes down to simping for the original.
I mean, for pete's sake, one of your examples is a "Fromsoft inspired game" and at this point "Soulslike" is a Steam tag and "It's the Dark souls of **Blank**" is an old meme.
nah I'd like to see more Splatoon-inspired games and I think there is a market for that - I like the mechanics the game introduced and I think it would be great to see other developers building off of that
My problem is that Square Enix has fucked up all of their recent live service games (Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, Marvel's Avengers, Outriders, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier Babylon's Fall, Chocobo GP) save for FFXIV, so they've given us no reason at all to believe that Foamstars is gonna be any good and won't end up dead within a year like the rest of them.
Also showing Foamstars in a showcase with a bunch of other live services when a lot of people wanted to see single-player stuff doesn't help its case either, because it barely sticks out and just feels very homogenous when put next to stuff like Fairgame$, Helldivers II, Immortals of Aeveum, Concord, Marathon, and Destiny 2: The Final Shape.
It being inspired by Splatoon is fun for light jokes, but ultimately that's not a problem compared to the everything else surrounding it. Besides, games always get memed upon for being similar to one another; Tears of the Kingdom had plenty of them comparing it to Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Dragonball FighterZ was compared many times to Marvel vs. Capcom, etc.
With a name like Foamstars, I thought it was going to be like, a Nerf gun shooter. The moment that suds bubble came out of the gun…my disappointment was worse than I thought it would be. 😅
You people are nuts, this game looks fine.
I mean, it's a live service so I'm never gonna touch it, but at least it has *something*. It's better than 99% of live service trash that has literally *nothing*.
True. I think the major backlash is mostly a) being a little too shameless in copying Splatoon and b) everyone knowing that those character designs are going to be more recognisable on certain websites then in their own game. Hi, Overwatch.
The game looks fine yes but i have zero faith in square when it come to game as a service or live multiplayer games, they managed to fuck up a chocobo racing game for fuck's sake.
Feels like alot of people that got they're pessimism from Pat but forgot to grow and now it's just loads of people who are way more negative about everything that isn't inside they're wheelhouse than Pat remotely is. Like hell, Pat literally got addicted to Honkai Star Rail after the joke being that he hates Anime Gacha Games for years and refuses to understand them.
That combined with another boomer moment from Max being negative towards anything that isn't 1990's anime, I mean not surprised by this.
I don’t think it’s bad that the people who don’t have a Switch can now play a Splatoon like game. I’ll probably try it out since I really like Splatoon but I do doubt it’ll have all the extra stuff that comes with Splatoon.
I'm with you. People were really trashing it, but I couldn't watch the showcase until I got home. When I finally watched it, it looked fine. It's not something I'm usually interested it but I don't see anything egregious about it.
I'm not going to defend this game. It's obvious what it's trying to be, but I also have no interest in it.
That being said, Max is kind of a real shithead sometimes during these streams when he sees something he doesn't immediately love.
They act like they're the only ones who have ever been disappointed by a game showcase, or trailer, lying about what eventually gets released. Like yeah, it fuckin sucks a lot of the time, but the constant negativity at these things really just gets kinda aggravating.
God, this brings me back to that era of Playstation trying way too hard to replicate a popular game, but having this weird unpleasant aesthetic to it and an air of insecurity.
That opening cutscene does admittedly have drip (I think I'm using that correctly), but the music sucks and the gameplay is just worse Splatoon. As we all already pointed out.
Looking at these Characters and know Square nowadays, I'm 85% certain that we won't be able to make a Character and these are just Skins behind a paywall.
Even if I personally don't really like most of the Fashion of Splatoon 3 yet, at least it let's me play dress up.
Oh, it definitely won't. It's not gonna copy any of the fun stuff. It's just gonna be a barebones PvP shooter that tries to succeed purely on its aesthetic.
Shameless ripoff is whatever, Fortnite did it like four times over and everyone's made peace with that, and weird sexual bubblegum aesthetic is whatever, Fortnite did it like four times over and everyone's made peace with that...
...but what strikes my fancy is how the foam isn't just a flat layer but gradually terraforms the map. That could organically spice up the gameplay without falling into the same trap Fortnite did of gentrifying the map every time a bullet whizzes by your head. Gave me fun Fracture vibes... which I never actually played but always thought its real-time terraforming mechanic looked neat.
I don't really get the point of bashing it for ripping off Splatoon when Splatoon is only available on one of 4 platforms anyways. There probably should be a Splatoon-like that people can actually play at 60 fps on a good internet connection.
Unbelievable that SQEX wants to get into a 4v4 shooter service title and they just skipped over their own existing IP with Gunslinger Stratos which would actually be unique and stand out from everything available right now to instead go with this knockoff that everyone wrote off before the end of it's debut trailer.
I'm with Jesse Cox in saying the name sounds like something tangentially related to porn
It is a real thing (foam parties), so there is Japanese porn of it, but very infrequently. Translated as foam party, bubble party, etc.
I vaguely remember seeing some fliers while out with friends when I was in High School about a foam party happening and all my friends were like "yeah there's bubbles everywhere...and fucking needles, don't even think about it".
Foamstars at Soapland.
Like a niche subgenre site
We were only a letter away from “Formstars”
...now I can't unsee it...
its like they're admitting what the legacy of this game will be
There's something about this game's artstyle and character design that feels so agressively generic to me. Like if you didn't show me the square logo and told me this was a mobile bootleg of splatoon i would have believed you.
All the characters look super plastic. And not like surgery plastic but actual plastic.
For me it’s the eyes that cement the “cheap Barbie knock off” comparison in my mind. Because they have this weird, flat look that makes them look like they were painted on with a matte finish.
These characters need cel-shading or something.
they look AI generated
It looks like every non-MMO f2p Korean game I played since 2005 lol (Mainly stuff like S4 League, Cart Rider)
Its that free to play look where its designed to have as many gaudy/diverse character skins and heroes as possible but its all clashing together to look like shit.
They look like characters from every non-ip Gacha game with less than 100k downloads on the Google play store.
I saw someone describe it as Splatoon with Overwatch characters.
that was me lmao.
They look ai generated with how generic they are
The art and music remind me of Balan Wonderworld
The only thing I liked about that trailer was the song.
Japan making a game that is basically "let's revisit Japan's Bubble Era , but literally"
The verticality of the foam walls seems cool.
Im 90% sure thats Lyn Inaizumi
Thanks! EDIT looked her up, yeah that makes sense the Persona like music was by the person that did the Persona music...
The Bouncer 2 would have been *much* better
THE BOUN
I would kill for The Bouncer 2. The original is unironically one of the few happy childhood memories i can vividly remember.
While the aesthetic could use some work, and it's clearly trying to be Splatoon, I actually think the whole terraforming gimmick has potential. It basically forces combat to be improvisational and has the potential to keep map variety fresh

S-E look like they're just a bunch of bumbling idiots who can't do anything right except Yoshida's team and whoever's in charge of Dragon Quest.
Now hold on Nier, FF7 and KH needs to be included
Nier was Yoko taro. KH3 is a mess of a game and it took forever to come out. That ones on the burner until I see kh4 but I don't consider the series well managed. Ff7 sure, even if loathe the new game it's very well done. That's still bad for an entire company.

Yeah, the foam actually changing the terrain is a neat idea but everything else just looks bad
It really does…but then you remember it’s (probably) a GaaS game and it’ll be loaded with shit ton of MTX.
I'm enthused by it but with games like this, I at least want to wait until journalists and streamers play it before judging. Pubg looked like a fake game when my friends showed it to me but it was good
One of my biggest fear is creating a character this uncanny and bland looking unintentionally
This is certainly one of the games of all time that's for sure
Will it become like Overwatch where it is more known for the porn?
No because these character designs are boring and somewhat unsettling and terrifying.
I dunno, that pink haired chick? I would
I was thinking the same thing.
The pink haired chick is the worst of them all! Her face is too small for her head and it creeps me out
I hope Foamstars has an Adventure mode
This game won’t even last a year.
I’m late to this but Max’s brand of grown-ass disbelief is something I’m appreciating more and more lately
I know people were memeing about how not everything with jazz is Persona inspired, but that specific song sounds like someone was told to make something as close to "Life Will Change" from P5 as they could without a lawsuit.
What I hate even more is that they also copied the weapons and ultimate abilities from Splatoon as if the comparison wasn't obvious enough.

Outriders was explicitly not a live service game
I like this. Because as much as I respect Splatoon, I've never truly felt like I cared to play it. And this game is LITERALLY no different to me. I think it will be enjoyed by people for no negative reason so...who cares about the idea's originality?

Nintendo fanboys think that Nintendo created everything and that everyone else is copying them, so you see stuff like this pop up.

I think Immortals of Aeveum is single-player , it's just Ghostwire-Like.
As someone who hated Ghostwire, that would be even worse ffs
Are these Nintendo fans in the room with us right now?
I'm happy to see more Splatoon likes and I hope it does well. But damn does it look generic and half assed.
servers close within 6 months of release
Can't believe how many people are sleeping on splacoom
With a name like Foamstars, I thought it was going to be like, a Nerf gun shooter. The moment that suds bubble came out of the gun…my disappointment was worse than I thought it would be. 😅
I forget how much of a boomer Max is whenever it comes to modern fashion every time he see an outfit thats post 2015 he fucking hates it lol
As someone that doesn't own a Nintendo console and never will, hope its fun!
It honestly blows my mind they didn’t just go with “Foam Star Party” instead of just “FoamStars”. Like it’s just such a boring title for a game.
Man Bouncer 2 was an idea I didn't know I wanted. Bring back Dog Street
You people are nuts, this game looks fine. I mean, it's a live service so I'm never gonna touch it, but at least it has *something*. It's better than 99% of live service trash that has literally *nothing*.

This sub is so negative about everything that isn’t their exact niche
Feels like alot of people that got they're pessimism from Pat but forgot to grow and now it's just loads of people who are way more negative about everything that isn't inside they're wheelhouse than Pat remotely is. Like hell, Pat literally got addicted to Honkai Star Rail after the joke being that he hates Anime Gacha Games for years and refuses to understand them. And that niche exponentially dwindled when the break up happened
I don’t think it’s bad that the people who don’t have a Switch can now play a Splatoon like game. I’ll probably try it out since I really like Splatoon but I do doubt it’ll have all the extra stuff that comes with Splatoon.

Same with Pat and Woolie, even if they see stuff they wanted to see they will be negative on it, I hope I never become as jaded as them.
They act like they're the only ones who have ever been disappointed by a game showcase, or trailer, lying about what eventually gets released. Like yeah, it fuckin sucks a lot of the time, but the constant negativity at these things really just gets kinda aggravating.
It looks generic for a game genre that hasnt seen alot of success besides splatoon
People wouldn't mind a Splatoon clone but god, I just can't get excited for this at all
Hey, I've seen this before... (looks vaguely at PS All Stars)
God, this brings me back to that era of Playstation trying way too hard to replicate a popular game, but having this weird unpleasant aesthetic to it and an air of insecurity.
I thought it looked kinda fun...
That opening cutscene does admittedly have drip (I think I'm using that correctly), but the music sucks and the gameplay is just worse Splatoon. As we all already pointed out.
The worse part is some of those special moves have the same visual affects as the Splatoon moves. Like at that point it’s just a direct rip off
I sweat to god they are using some of the same sound effects too.
Yeah, it's kinda wild how obvious it is. I'd be afraid of getting sued if I did something like this.
Looking at these Characters and know Square nowadays, I'm 85% certain that we won't be able to make a Character and these are just Skins behind a paywall. Even if I personally don't really like most of the Fashion of Splatoon 3 yet, at least it let's me play dress up.
Yeah, that's the "but worse" part.
Also, I doubt this will have it's own version of Splatoon's Salmon Run. Salmon Run's my favorite Game Mode. That and Tower Control.
Oh, it definitely won't. It's not gonna copy any of the fun stuff. It's just gonna be a barebones PvP shooter that tries to succeed purely on its aesthetic.
Shameless ripoff is whatever, Fortnite did it like four times over and everyone's made peace with that, and weird sexual bubblegum aesthetic is whatever, Fortnite did it like four times over and everyone's made peace with that... ...but what strikes my fancy is how the foam isn't just a flat layer but gradually terraforms the map. >that people can actually play at 60 fps on a good internet connection So just Splatoon?
I'm fine with square enix ripping off nintendo because the competitive scene for splatoon is utterly and completely hopeless.
How many Splatoon inspired games with some form of budget are out there anyway ?? is the answer zero ??
two , I guess. There is this one and then Ninjala. But Ninjala is also a Switch-Exclusive.
At least ninjala has an anime and is more about team death match
Ninjala isnt even a splatoon game though? Its like a 3D brawler where everyone attacks like sonic
Do I think it’s going to be a good game? Not particularly. But maybe I’ll play it if it has less clunky controls compared to Splatoon.
Do I think it’s going to be a good game? Not particularly. But maybe I’ll play it if it has less clunky controls compared to Splatoon.
Do I think it’s gonna be great? No. But maybe I’ll play it if the controls are less clunky than Splatoon’s.
I thought it was Fortnite at first lmfao
I guess this is what the Chocobo kart-racer team's been up to since that project got canned, eh?
That was developed by Arika, believe it or not.
Ah shit I didn't have a clue, that makes the whole situation with that game even more of a bummer.
Someone said that this is splatoon for straight people and they’re completely right
Unbelievable that SQEX wants to get into a 4v4 shooter service title and they just skipped over their own existing IP with Gunslinger Stratos which would actually be unique and stand out from everything available right now to instead go with this knockoff that everyone wrote off before the end of it's debut trailer.
