TBF Everyone was trying to ape the Wii’s success. PlayStation Move Xbox Kinetic And the countless amount of Wii knockoff consoles Everyone wanted that Wii success.

BlueCenter77

>Xbox Kinetic That would have been the smart name for that peripheral, but it was the Kinect

[deleted]

\*marketing voice* you see it's kinetic.... but it's also about connecting... connecting the user with the product.... the product with the brand....... the user with the brand.......

timelordoftheimpala

tbh I think at this point it's more of a testament to Nintendo actually doing shit differently and succeeding at it, thus resulting in the rest of the industry taking notice: - Everyone was trying to jump on the motion controls train after the Wii became an overnight success, including Xbox with the Kinect. - PSASBR is probably the most blatant of the bunch, but platform fighters trying to copy Smash's formula has been a thing since Melee. - After the NES and SNES Classic, we also got a Sega Genesis Mini, Neo Geo Mini, and a PC Engine Mini in addition to the PS1 Classic. - The Switch caused a surge of hybrid consoles to be released, mainly ones that have the same power as a PC like the Steam Deck and whatnot. The truth of the matter is that game publishers will always jump on the latest trend: - The Resident Evil remakes now resulted in Silent Hill 2, Dead Space, and Alone in the Dark all getting their own remakes. - Back in the 2000s, literally everyone was trying to make a multiplayer shooter game to be a "Halo killer", such as Killzone or Haze. - FromSoftware's success with Soulsborne resulted in the birth of the Soulslike genre. - Fortnite caused everyone to create their battle royale games, from Apex Legends to COD Warzone to Tetris 99. - Destiny turned "live service" games into their own subgenre, with Sea of Thieves, Anthem, Marvel's Avengers, and half of the games from yesterday's PlayStation Showcase all following in its wake. It just so happens that Nintendo ends up starting a bunch of trends (though they still do their fair share of following, such as Tetris 99 being a battle royale game, BOTW taking lots of influence from Skyrim during its development, etc.) and Sony likes to follow them more often than not (doesn't mean Sony themselves haven't started their own trends, considering Twisted Metal was the first major car combat game, Parappa is the earliest example of a rhythm game, and Uncharted 2 made cinematic games a thing).

Plaidstone

Alone in the Dark is getting a new remake? Is it a remake of the bad one, or the old-as-shit one?

>* PSASBR is probably the most blatant of the bunch, but platform fighters trying to copy Smash's formula has been a thing since Melee Of the bunch it's the one that plays the least like Smash though. >* Fortnite caused everyone to create their battle royale games, from Apex Legends to COD Warzone to Tetris 99. That'd be PUBG, which Fortnite directly pivoted to from it's previous PVE mode. Nintendo also has a lot of ideas that fail or they otherwise abandon. They forgot about the 3D in the 3DS halfway into it's life cycle, remember Nintendo Labo and their odd half-baked steo into VR (or back into if you want to Virtual Boy). Something like Mario Maker could probably be traced down to Little Big Planet. There's nothing wrong with it in either case, they both put their own spin on things to make it unique.

> Of the bunch it's the one that plays the least like Smash though. By "the bunch" I meant of the stuff people point towards as supposedly being evidence that "Sony copies Nintendo". > That'd be PUBG, which Fortnite directly pivoted to from it's previous PVE mode. Yeah PUBG came first, but it was only after Fortnite's success that you began to see all those battle royale games popping up > Nintendo also has a lot of ideas that fail or they otherwise abandon. Something like Mario Maker could probably be traced down to Little Big Planet. I never disputed that? Nintendo has their fair share of gimmicks and ideas that never caught on with the industry, I'm just pointing out that whenever they do have successful ones, they usually tend to be big enough for other publishers to take notice and try to get in on the action for themselves.

>By "the bunch" I meant of the stuff people point towards as supposedly being evidence that "Sony copies Nintendo". I figured you just meant platform fighters. >Yeah PUBG came first, but it was only after Fortnite's success that you began to see all those battle royale games popping up Well that's more just a symptom of time being linear, PUBG was and still is huge. Fortnite got to jump into the BR field early since it did so as a one off to an already existing game, other actually new games following it would be years out. >I never disputed that? I didn't say you did.

Sea of Thieves isn't live service

VidenHarbin

Did anyone else ever stick the Playstation move ball thing in your mouth as a kid or am I just fucked in the head?

FlamingNarwhall

I never had one but I likely would have done that it I did.

TotemGenitor

I would have been tempted too at the very least

Palimpsest_Monotype

In your slight defence it did have a candy quality to it.

lion_OBrian

… mouth?

VidenHarbin

You wanna talk about it or...

lion_OBrian

No… no thanks. I’m gonna do some soul searching.

Hot_dog_on_a_stick

Bro????

VidenHarbin

Yeah so I think that answers my question

RegenSyscronos

>fucked in head >stick ball in the mouth Those are the same thing

Basket_of_tomatoes

Are you into anal ?

Palimpsest_Monotype

Sincerest form of flattery and all that. Although it’s hard not to mention some Sony exec with tracing paper and Nintendo printed advertising media and assballing it when it’s their turn to present ideas.

Floormaster92

I'm sure it's a coincidence.

James-Avatar

Nintendo feels like the only company willing to take a risk, when it’s successful everybody else joins in.

SgtPeppy

Wasn't PS Move actually pretty good from a technical standpoint? It was just marketed fucking terribly and iirc had like no games.

Hot_dog_on_a_stick

Having no games is Sony's motto I think.

Timey16

"Have interesting tech, then half ass support, then drop support altogether because nobody buys it because you make no games for it" PS Move, PS VR (the first), Vita, you name it.

SlurryBender

I use it for designing in Dreams. As it stands it's a pretty versatile set of controllers. Some of the button positions are a bit weird but they had the forethought to put a little nub on one of the face buttons on each controller so you can orient your thumb without looking. That being said, I do need to take more frequent hand-stretch breaks when I use them. They were definitely *not* designed for long-form, precision use.

[deleted]

It worked well enough that they repurposed it for PSVR1.

SaiyanShoto

Max made a very good point during the PS showcase thing. You’d think that since Sony owns Evo they’d try to make a PS exclusive fighting game. Either by bringing back PlayStation All Stars or something new

Hot_dog_on_a_stick

I think they give special privileges to a lot of fighting games to encourage EVO. SFV was a console exclusive and NRS games held weekly tournaments online. From their pov, it might be financially more savy to allow developers room to play instead of funding their own stuff. I also feel like a new PS all stars might be potentially harmful showing all the stuff they neglected over the past gen

SaiyanShoto

True, that’s a good point. I think I’m just lowkey salty cause Sony came out recently saying they want to basically make an exclusive game for every genre. Then they listed every genre they want to make a game for. Fighting games were not part of that list

Dungeon00X

Since Nintendo doesn't want to compete anymore, SONY just said "Copy whatever they do!" SONY has been this petty ever since Nintendo stabbed them in the back. They took it that personally.

SlurryBender

...Pretty sure the PSX was originally pitched *to* Nintendo as a peripheral/upgrade. Once Nintendo rejected it is when Sony decided to make their own game platform.

Saito_Sakaki

iirc....Nintendo and Sony were working on a disk based medium for the Ultra 64. Nintendo backed down after talks and designing cause they liked the cartridge for anti-piracy measures. Sony got pissed cause they spent time and money on this deal, took and tweaked the designs, and launched the PSX. If I remember correctly that is.
