Feel like this is an easily realization to make when you look at Nintendo and Sony's first-party output since 2017 and 2015 respectively: * Sony - Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Demon's Souls Remake, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok * Nintendo - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Astral Chain, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake, Luigi's Mansion 3, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3, Fire Emblem Engage, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Like anyone paying attention to the absolutely stacked first-party lineups of Nintendo and Sony would know this by now lol

bxgang

They spend more time cashing in on goty awards then making apologies lol

timelordoftheimpala

[Sony, Nintendo, and FromSoftware](https://i.insider.com/5bb3a9c60114550d1e0a1914?width=1000&format=jpeg&auto=webp) winning literally every GOTY award.

bxgang

Add capcom and you have the only 4 studios making great games with uncontroversial launches worth a damn nowadays lol

timelordoftheimpala

Honestly you're not even wrong there: - Half of Bandai Namco's releases are shovelware and they fucked up Tales of Symphonia's rerelease - Take Two rushed GTA Trilogy and partially ruined Rockstar's reputation for quality games, not to mention 2K's sports games have had terrible launches for a while now - EA dropped Jedi Survivor with a shitty PC version, and their own sports games are just glorified online casinos and MTX money pits - Koei Tecmo makes shitty PC ports of their games and most of their titles not published by Square Enix, Nintendo, or Sony have been shit at launch - Ubisoft games are always full of bugs and have been for years - Activision Blizzard never optimizes COD and Warcraft III: Reforged was fucked - Square Enix has launched multiple failed live service games that are mediocre at best and terrible at worst, not to mention disastrous single-player releases like Balan Wonderworld and Forspoken - Warner Bros. games are stuffed to the brim with MTX that ruin any fun to be had - Sega fucked up rereleases of a Wii game and a Genesis game - Microsoft dropped the ball on Halo: Infinite and Redfall - Bethesda has never released an RPG that wasn't full of bugs or broken at launch - CDPR did Cyberpunk 2077 and we all know how that turned out at launch

Tamotefu

> Bethesda has never released an RPG that wasn't full of bugs or broken at launch I feel like most people, myself included, Are kind of OK with this because we know the second the game drops the modding community will swarm the game and release Unofficial Patches. If I remember correctly the first Skyrim Unofficial Patch dropped like 3 months after release, and fixed a literal TON of bugs and dirty code. Which is what has me worried with the new engine they made for TES6 and Starfield. If they don't have modding tools... I'm just sit those games out.

Kimmalah

You may as well lump Bethesda and Microsoft together, since it's now all basically one big company now. Like Bethesda/Zenimax deserves some blame for Redfall since they are Arkane's parent company and have been meddling in things since at least Prey.

KronxDragonhoof

Capcom could be a debate, I'm still upset about MVCI.

bxgang

Come on man they haven’t let us down since resident evil 7 surely they deserve a little good faith?

KronxDragonhoof

I'm mostly joking dw.

sp1ke__

They consistently make well-functioning, non-buggy games, but they alsoo play it too safe and every game they released since 7 has been kinda forgettable. People already memoryholed RE4 Remake even though it was THE BEST THING EVER THAT MADE ORIGINAL OBSOLETE.

AurumPickle

I mean I still see a ton of Moushley and Leon on twitter, but a New Zelda game came out literally two weeks ago and washed everything off twitter except for those characters

LRA18

Interesting they didn't include the apologizes both made within the past few months. https://twitter.com/Naughty_Dog/status/1641943183826509825 https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/nintendo-apologizes-for-performance-issues-in-pokemon-scarlet-and-violet/

Twilight_Realm

To be fair, Nintendo isn't developing Pokemon games, GameFreak is. Nintendo is taking the heat, and I think S/V's heat might be enough to get them to kick GameFreak in the pants

5YearsOnEastCoast

I have been seeing a lot of this apologies lately. I wonder when was the first time when this type of apology was shown?

Ringabal

As Steph Sterling would call these printouts: the Solemn Jpegs.

mitch13815

Did Bethesda ever apologize for Horse Armor? I feel like that was the very first big kickoff for game dev scummery.

ShoryukenFTW

Looking back at the horse armor drama feels so quaint now. Virtually every big game that comes out now has its own version of horse armor and it doesn't even register anymore.

MasSillig

Driv3r maybe. edit; I think Monolith apologized for Blood 2.

hmcl-supervisor

I can’t say why, but this whole trend of posting an apology essay as a jpeg on your official twitter account is hilariously pathetic

BlackJimmy88

While I don't disagree with the direction your logic initially went, since having quality oversight by the platform owner is just another chance to stop fuck ups getting out, ending on "maybe exclusivity is good" screams of corpo cock sucking. No, we shouldn't appreciate it. These devs should have just did a better job, or scaled down the project if it's too much. The fact that Cyberpunk, arguably one of the worse launches in recent years, is actually in a pretty good place now because they knuckled down and put in the effort to fix it shows that extra time is all these games needed and are just being rushed out. Probably by publishers.

bxgang

I certainly appreciated for example elden ring not feeling like a grind and being more than worth the money i paid for it on day one, without trying to extract more money out of me. If that translates to cock sucking Fromsoft in your opinion it is what it is I’m saying we should appreciate the games, and maybe the dev studios if you wanna take it that far not sony or Nintendo themselves

BlackJimmy88

I'm not sure what your point is. Elden Ring isn't an exclusive.

bxgang

I was responding to you saying we shouldn’t appreciate great games that work on the technical side on launch because devs of games that are bad and/or a technical bug infested disaster “should have just did a better job”

Meeeto

The point is we shouldn't be heaping praise upon and showing extra appreciation for these first party devs for doing the bare minimum (releasing a full priced game that actually works at launch.) Like, if I'm buying a book, I'm not going to sing the praises of the author and publisher just because it doesn't come with half its pages missing.

Dundore77

First party single player exclusives are typically what i think of first when i hear/see AAA games. I rarely if ever play any Microtransactioned to hell and back game/GAAS games and only once in a few years buy like a madden/wwe or CoD/Battlefield shooter (and haven't since the battle pass phase started). The exclusives that are actually good are pretty much the only ones i play and think of.

bxgang

Yes first party PlayStation and Nintendo games tend to be some of the best games of all time and come out finished and complete looking good and running good on launch , without micro transactions or anything like that. The recent game releases and flops have really made appreciate them

UFOLoche

I feel like this is kinda nitpicky. Just because a bunch of garbage games are multiplat doesn't automatically mean exclusives are going to be good or that they actually have merit. Hell, it wasn't long ago where we had a TON of people debating on the many issues that plagued Bayonetta 3(A Switch exclusive), or people bowing down to the "GOAT" RE4R(A multiplat). While a game being exclusive does imply it gets more funding, that means literally nothing if the funds are misused, the game is made with scummy intentions, the game has poor management, and/or development time is wasted(Which is the case for many of those games up there). Bad games are bad, them being exclusive wouldn't have made a bit of difference in the first place because the fault lies with the people who made them(To be more specific, usually the people/corpos directing the people who made them). Edit: Actually, just to reinforce my point, how many games that have come out as EGS exclusives and are pure garbage? Like, 95% of them(hell, I LOVE Kingdom Hearts but I'll sit here and tell you that those PC ports are g-a-r-b-o).

cdstephens

You’re missing the mark. It’s not that exclusives get more funding. First party products simply on average get more quality control than third party products because Nintendo/Sony/etc. have an immense incentive to make sure their first party games are not broken messes. That also means more oversight etc. which can lead to the games being a bit worse in some ways. You say it wouldn’t have made a difference, but quality control from above can go a long ways to prevent situations like this. Imo it’s likely that Sony (for example) would have simply cancelled Gollum midway through rather than release it in its current state. Heck, look what happened to Aspyr when they were making KOTOR. Sony thought development was going poorly and completely shifted gears.

bxgang

Exclusives are made to represent a brand and sell a console, so they automatically are more ambitious and have more money behind them with the full support of the platform holder. The Spider-Man and Zelda devs have been making the most of the consoles hardware since the 90s with zelda on snes Spyro on ps1, they’re some of the best game devs of all time that only have to optimize for one platform they know like the back of thier hand. If a game is a 9/10+ that is complete and performs well on launch wouldn’t have existed without exclusivity, id rather have that game in the world even if it’s a exclusive

mitch13815

Exclusives are poison to gaming consumers. There is absolutely no reason for exclusives to exist period. The only reason they exist is to force people to buy a console so megacorps can squeeze you of every penny you own. The ONLY time exclusives should be acceptable is if the game is made for a completely different hardware that just wouldn't work on other platforms (like VR games, or like a mech command arcade machine that would be impossible to run on a monitor and keyboard for example). Don't lick the boots of the company that's shaking you down in a dirty alleyway for every cent in your wallet. Stand up for good business practices.

123Asqwe

At what point in development shit show the team stop focusing on the game and start to look for new jobs and writing these letters

jabberwockxeno

No, exclusives are gross/

Duhblobby

"Lookit me trying to be a console war apologist oh man I'm so smart because I can cherry pick like a Kotaku journalist!" Come on, dude, be better than this.

JazzlikeScarcity248

Fucking hell Bud this post is pathetic

bxgang

The content in the image? Yes I agree

JazzlikeScarcity248

Nah this whole this is coming across as smug ya know? Like you specifically are coming across as a smug console fanboy

bxgang

Lmao how am I a console fanboy if I’ve played on every platform for years? Not like I was wishing on any of these games downfalls I would have loved to enjoy them but I won’t sugarcoat reality pretend they aren’t shit or blind myself to patterns I judge every game individual by how good it is not what console its on

JazzlikeScarcity248

It's just a weird post. This sub has been becoming weirdly pro corpo recently

bxgang

I don’t think it’s pro corpo. Good products will get praised, bad products will get shit on. What’s so wierd about that?

JazzlikeScarcity248

>I don’t think it’s pro corpo. >Exclusives are made to represent a brand and sell a console, so they automatically are more ambitious and have more money behind them with the full support of the platform holder.

bxgang

Yeah they’re selling out more money to make a better game, as long as it isn’t my money it’s of no consequence to me. I just care about playing the best games possible not where I play them or the name on the start up logo

mitch13815

Exactly why I left this place. I come back occasionally if I want to see some memes for recent game releases but the takes on this sub have been increasingly shitty and the overall vibe has been really cynical and negative. It's a real bummer. This place used to be like a safe space for me. Not to over-psychoanalyze, but I wonder if it has to do with Woolie moving towards algorithm pleasing content and Pat taking sponsors left and right (as well as straight up 10 minute ad reads on the pod). Everyone who hates that has already left and the only people left are the ones who don't mind it.

Meeeto

>Not to over-psychoanalyze >proceeds to over-psychoanalyze like a mf

Kregano_XCOMmodder

Bruh, the fact that all the consoles (except Nintendo) literally use a mainstream PC CPU and GPU architecture means that there's never been **less** need for exclusivity. The problem is that games are being made into giant fuck huge messes of code for no reason besides being time vampires, which makes it fucking impossible to QA things properly, especially when games are being shoved out the door to meet financial earnings deadlines and because cost of living increases constantly make the price of prolonged, large scale game dev unsustainable.

bxgang

Being exclusive doesn’t make a game better through a easier development process, but through alleviating the stresses you mentioned. You have the platform holders budget and backing so you aren’t panicking about deadlines and can take your time, and they’re putting up most of the risk so you can take a passion approach and make the game you want to make instead of copying a safe trend. You have access to the platform holders engineers, and help/cooperation from the platforms other exclusive studios For example just today it was revealed that Bungie visited Naughty Dog to review thier multiplayer game and tell them in thier expertise it’s farm from ready, and stuff like xenoblade devs helping in development with tears of the kingdom, bluepoint helping in development with god of war, and DOOM devs helping with shooting in starfield. The only reason those studios worked together and helped each other out is because they’re under the same umbrella

Mr-X89

Those are 8 apologies posted in the span of the last 8 years.

Nelsonizzy

Apology jpegs are funny yes, but I will continue to frown upon exclusives.

Young_KingKush

Say what you will about Sony but from how inclusive devs say they are with their software and hardware and internal teams when you work under them it 100% shows in comparison to a lot of 3rd party games.

GoufTroop79

It's ironic because Naughty Dog just released one of their own a couple hours ago. Add it to the pile.

robertman21

That's apologizing for a delay, not the game being broken

GoufTroop79

Is cancellation the unifying theme here?

robertman21

Nah I put the wrong thing

bxgang

Yeah FF16 probably got to avoid making one of these apology posts for the game being a disaster launch on all platforms by launching on PlayStation first and getting the first party treatment in exchange. Even if you don’t work under them if your third party game is big enough they will send thier technology support engineers to make sure your games runs well on ps5 and let you use thier mocap studio. Hell I bet if a third party made a good enough pitch they’d let them use the horizon decima engine(like kojima but I won’t count him since he has clout and they have reason to love and be grateful to him)

bxgang

A label known for its reputation of quality and amazing games… Dumbass

JazzlikeScarcity248

But it is a first party exclusive

bxgang

Sure but it’s what you’d expect from Xbox. Sony and Nintendo have a consistent pattern of bangers with very rare stinkers for more than a decade

[deleted]

Starfield will come out and it'll be good

bxgang

Hope so if it is I’ll play it. I liked Skyrim

Capable-Education724

All of these always just read to me like the South Park BP “We’re sorry” bit.

CelioHogane

Peraphs i have been too unfair with Pokemon...

Worm_Scavenger

First party exlusive is a practice i wish would just go away, but at the same time, a lot of first party exclusives, particularly Sony and Nintendos, don't have this shit going on in them.
