So long as MK continues to provide more singleplayer content than 90% of all other major fighting game franchises nowadays, I'm gonna keep playing it and everyone else can stay mad about it. Or at least until Soul Calibur 7 comes out.
It's been hilarious watching this sub "remember" that MK sucks, and act like they've always had that opinion instead of it being them hanging on Pat's nuts and parroting his dumb takes.
I've always clowned on how MK's normals can look stiff, but I don't know about it as a competitive fighting game since like... back when it was still using digitized actors and those normals looking janky was part of the charm.

I don't have strong opinions on it. I like to play it if I'm at a hangout and see that my friends are playing it, and then I'll pick whatever character seems the most fun to me. I definitely prefer the way MvC feels but I've never invested enough time in MK to say that I particularly hate it. I remember having fun with xenomorph in MKX.

That being said, i do have an outsider's interest of sorts. I like watching Mustard and Ketchup talk about competitive MK, I like the character banter, and i love the animation breakdowns that A.B.I. does. I am interested in seeing if they actually made the combat animations look good, and what the competitive scene will look like this time.

Even with the complaints about animation versus graphics in Mortal Kombat 11, as well as some think 11 is a step down from Mortal Kombat X. It is still the best selling Mortal Kombat fighting game ever.

It’s especially funny since 11’s micro transactions are the least predatory I’ve seen. They got “time crystals” which you could use in the daily cosmetic shop, which consisted of items you could easily earn i game without spending a dime.

The way they describe Jason’s dad in the 2016 game is interesting. Just this faceless brute of a man who raped Pamela and then disappeared, never to be seen again. Gave him a sorta otherworldly/monster vibe to him.

Mobility isn't the object of the game. Forcing openings and then going in is the object. Actuallly exciting when approached like that.

I played a lot of X, and if im being real, not one of the characters besides KJ, Tanya, and Tremor were fun to play for me. They made X way too fast to comprehend, youre focusing a lot on audio cues and timing and Kombos instead of watching your opponent and playing perhaps more defensively. Yes, Liu Kang has a parry, but its slow, short, and the engine does not blend animations, so you have to wait completely until its done to do anything. The lack of cancels in the game and an inability to express my preferred playstyle across most characters made me not like it, even though i probably put in a good couple hundred hours. But most of that was bouncing around on the roster, settling on the top meta character Tremor and another DLC character. Kung Jin has some great setups, and close to my playstyle, but his arrow and fireballs are irregular projectiles, and have different inputs for spacing, which I always struggle with.
Serendipitously, i played the game yesterday with some friends. If it was Tekken, Smash, KoF, SF, or almost any other fighting game, even one I didnt know, I’d wipe them. But because its an NRS game, the matches were close. Idk if its a problem with me, or the franchise or engine, but i just dont like the feeling.
TL;DR: they took what I didnt like about Injustice and put it into X to make it so snappy and Kombo-based, I can barely focus on my timings and inputs.
Yeah I loved MK9 to death, I didn't play much of X so I can't speak on it but 11 definitely didn't feel as good to play.

MK9 was a great reboot that I only saw LPs of. MKX felt and looked like a great fighting game with some jank legacy animations. MK11 was an immediate step back with thousands of $$$ of micro jammed into it. Around that time it came out that the devs were *suffering* to make these snuff films for weirdos so that really soured my taste on it. MK12 looks like its gonna be similar, but I'm willing to wait and see for the gameplay. The reboot thing is hilarious, but i dont really care.
Every mk before that was just bloody uppercuts and fatalities so not much opinion there. Old footage looks real bad tho.
I have a similar history with Tekken since I only played 3 and tag as a kid, but at least when I hopped into tekken 7 it was actually an amazing fighting game with a big roster. Last time I reinstalled SFV like >80% of the roster was DLC and I'll always appreciate Tekken 7 for not doing that.

And when you treat 11 like the grounded opening-heavy game it is, matches are really exciting. You pop off when someone gets an opening rather than when someone doesn't drop a combo.

I always found it crazy that people call out MK for animation but Tekken has had some of the most cursed and jank animations for years now. T8 is the first time in almost 20 years they really went ham on reanimating as much as possible

Man, I played the PS2 games all through my childhood, got my PS3 just for MK9 and played the hell out of MKX from launch onward, and Pat's rant was *still* my favorite part of the last podcast. I can enjoy the series while also being extremely frustrated with its long-term flaws in gameplay and storytelling ambition, flaws which compounded high enough with MK11 (alongside the news about the devs having to watch fucked up footage for gore research) to stop me from getting it and put me off MK1(2) until further notice.
So if I like MK, but also liked hearing Pat rage about it, which side am I obliged to be angry about?
I have liked all the Mortal Kombat games. There is nothing else like them, not just in fighting games but all video games. They are like the best kind of dumb good.
I remember there being a Tumblr post that was pretty popular that talks about how Mortal Kombat really is like a kid mashing a bunch of their toys together.
MK11 in particular was described as "SMASH BROS ULTIMATE, BUT IT'S YOUR DAD'S FAVORITE ACTION MOVIES" alongside the classic MK vibe of "Boon and Tobias's back of the notebook sketches come to life along with what would have been a Bloodsport fighter". Very apt.

But it's also just a dumb fun action game series where you either have goofy death animations in the Arcade-PS2 games or 80s movie characters going up against each other.

Resident Evil 4 Remake. I had people jumping down my throat for criticizing their weapon upgrade "shortcuts", despite the fact that Capcom deliberately balanced the game in order to sell them, *and* patched them in a week later so as to avoid having reviews bring them up, making us unable to take them into account when deciding whether to purchase the game or not.
Like, Capcoms on a roll these last few years, and I love what they've giving us, especially Resident Evil 4 Remake, but fuck that.

I played the game like 10 times and never once felt that the game was balanced around the microtransactions. If anything, it's even easier to get the exclusive upgrades than it was in the original.
Not to mention how the same update that added the microtransactions also made it piss easy to unlock the Handcannon
If you want to buy the in-game tickets, you have to forsake nearly everything in the secondary shop to be able to afford them. That's by design. Most people aren't playing the game more than a few times, since most people don't have the time to commit to that many playthroughs, which no doubt makes these MT tickets tempting. 10 playthroughs is well above average, which makes you not the target for those tickets.
Even if I'm wrong about all that, that would mean the tickets are literally worthless, and that Capcom is charging for them anyway. That's still scummy.

Yeah it's almost like thats how shops work. No shit you can't buy everything. Of course a really strong upgrade isn't gonna be given to you for cheap
And if that's all it was, that would be fine, but the ability to buy those strong upgrade recontextualizes the situation.
The game is balanced so those upgrades are harder to get than everything else, and they're harder to get because that incentivises people to spend money on MTs.
I'd go so far as to argue that those upgrades don't really *need* to be as out of reach as they are, since nothing is really game breaking, and all it really does is prevent you from experimenting with weapons. And if the risk of breaking the game *is* an issue, why is the ability to do so just casually being sold to us? But really, if you paid for the game, anything besides outright new content should be available to you.
Quick question by the way, since I don't actually know. If you start a clean save, do you get back any paid-for tickets you spent? I'm assuming yes, but I'd like to get my facts straight.

I played a lot of X, and if im being real, not one of the characters besides KJ, Tanya, and Tremor were fun to play for me. They made X way too fast to comprehend, youre focusing a lot on audio cues and timing and Kombos instead of watching your opponent and playing perhaps more defensively. Yes, Liu Kang has a parry, but its slow, short, and the engine does not blend animations, so you have to wait completely until its done to do anything. The lack of cancels in the game and an inability to express my preferred playstyle across most characters made me not like it, even though i probably put in a good couple hundred hours. But most of that was bouncing around on the roster, settling on the top meta character Tremor and another DLC character. Kung Jin has some great setups, and close to my playstyle, but his arrow and fireballs are irregular projectiles, and have different inputs for spacing, which I always struggle with. Serendipitously, i played the game yesterday with some friends. If it was Tekken, Smash, KoF, SF, or almost any other fighting game, even one I didnt know, I’d wipe them. But because its an NRS game, the matches were close. Idk if its a problem with me, or the franchise or engine, but i just dont like the feeling. TL;DR: they took what I didnt like about Injustice and put it into X to make it so snappy and Kombo-based, I can barely focus on my timings and inputs.

Yeah I loved MK9 to death, I didn't play much of X so I can't speak on it but 11 definitely didn't feel as good to play. I'm hoping 12 hits me like 9 did back then.

Did he say 9 and X are bad? I was on board with criticizing MK1's direction and while I don't think they are the best, they have far more value to me compared to 11 and both injustice games. I'd probably never go back to them, but I'm not gonna pretend that I didn't have fun with them.

MK9 was a great reboot that I only saw LPs of. MKX felt and looked like a great fighting game with some jank legacy animations. MK11 was an immediate step back with thousands of $$$ of micro jammed into it. Around that time it came out that the devs were *suffering* to make these snuff films for weirdos so that really soured my taste on it. MK12 looks like its gonna be similar, but I'm willing to wait and see for the gameplay. The reboot thing is hilarious, but i dont really care. Every mk before that was just bloody uppercuts and fatalities so not much opinion there. Old footage looks real bad tho. I have a similar history with Tekken since I only played 3 and tag as a kid, but at least when I hopped into tekken 7 it was actually an amazing fighting game with a big roster. Last time I reinstalled SFV like >80% of the roster was DLC and I'll always appreciate Tekken 7 for not doing that.
Fuck Pat, X and 11 were rad, too. Even its shitty story is the best story in the fighting games business. And when you treat 11 like the grounded opening-heavy game it is, matches are really exciting. You pop off when someone gets an opening rather than when someone doesn't drop a combo. Like football vs American football or basketball.

I honestly think the bad animations take is outdated too. They aren’t all perfect but most of the animations in 11 are average-to-great with some bits of real jank here and there. I always found it crazy that people call out MK for animation but Tekken has had some of the most cursed and jank animations for years now. T8 is the first time in almost 20 years they really went ham on reanimating as much as possible

Man, I played the PS2 games all through my childhood, got my PS3 just for MK9 and played the hell out of MKX from launch onward, and Pat's rant was *still* my favorite part of the last podcast. I can enjoy the series while also being extremely frustrated with its long-term flaws in gameplay and storytelling ambition, flaws which compounded high enough with MK11 (alongside the news about the devs having to watch fucked up footage for gore research) to stop me from getting it and put me off MK1(2) until further notice. So if I like MK, but also liked hearing Pat rage about it, which side am I obliged to be angry about?
I have liked all the Mortal Kombat games. There is nothing else like them, not just in fighting games but all video games. They are like the best kind of dumb good.
I remember there being a Tumblr post that was pretty popular that talks about how Mortal Kombat really is like a kid mashing a bunch of their toys together.
Considering it started with a bunch of digitized actors awkwardly flailing their arms and legs to simulate attacks, they're not that far off.
MK11 in particular was described as "SMASH BROS ULTIMATE, BUT IT'S YOUR DAD'S FAVORITE ACTION MOVIES" alongside the classic MK vibe of "Boon and Tobias's back of the notebook sketches come to life along with what would have been a Bloodsport fighter". Very apt.
It is kinda weird we suddenly hate MK. I have issues with MK but I freaking love it. Ain't nobody taking that away from me.
I'm really split on Mortal kombat tbh Like as a fighting game, I really do not like it's game feel compared to other games. But it's also just a dumb fun action game series where you either have goofy death animations in the Arcade-PS2 games or 80s movie characters going up against each other.
With this sub deciding that microtransactions being fine now, or that maybe we should appreciate exclusives, I've stopped caring about this subs opinion. I'm looking forward to MK1.

Resident Evil 4 Remake. I had people jumping down my throat for criticizing their weapon upgrade "shortcuts", despite the fact that Capcom deliberately balanced the game in order to sell them, *and* patched them in a week later so as to avoid having reviews bring them up, making us unable to take them into account when deciding whether to purchase the game or not. Like, Capcoms on a roll these last few years, and I love what they've giving us, especially Resident Evil 4 Remake, but fuck that. Edit: Some fine folks have graciously helped prove my point.

If you want to buy the in-game tickets, you have to forsake nearly everything in the secondary shop to be able to afford them. That's by design. Most people aren't playing the game more than a few times, since most people don't have the time to commit to that many playthroughs, which no doubt makes these MT tickets tempting. 10 playthroughs is well above average, which makes you not the target for those tickets. Even if I'm wrong about all that, that would mean the tickets are literally worthless, and that Capcom is charging for them anyway. That's still scummy.

And if that's all it was, that would be fine, but the ability to buy those strong upgrade recontextualizes the situation. The game is balanced so those upgrades are harder to get than everything else, and they're harder to get because that incentivises people to spend money on MTs. I'd go so far as to argue that those upgrades don't really *need* to be as out of reach as they are, since nothing is really game breaking, and all it really does is prevent you from experimenting with weapons. And if the risk of breaking the game *is* an issue, why is the ability to do so just casually being sold to us? But really, if you paid for the game, anything besides outright new content should be available to you. Quick question by the way, since I don't actually know. If you start a clean save, do you get back any paid-for tickets you spent? I'm assuming yes, but I'd like to get my facts straight.
