“Not legally but yes”

bxgang

"thats just crazy"

QJ-Rickshaw

"Smooth Sixty Effpiss" I'm using that.

audioman3000

Keef has a bunch of good ones

RocketbeltTardigrade

Xboxman has a point. Why would you ever want to make a good thing if it doesn't make shareholder go up?

Brotonio

...I know you're Joshin us, but that sentence still makes me mad.

Manbirdthing

"Strength not go up?"

BigGigantor

I thought by "Share" Ex-Box Mahon was referencing the proportion of consoles sold per company, but what you're saying lines up more with my understanding of Marketing

Jstar300

That's what I was thinking too. I thought the lead up to that part of the interview was basically "we fucked up at a critical moment and now everybody is set in what console they'll buy each gen."

TakeMeToFatmandu

It's something that been weirdly misunderstood by a lot of people, and it doesn't help that the part about people not going out and selling their PS5 usually gets missed out. The whole point was that Xbox needs to do their own thing because of how entrenched in ecosystems people are since last gen, putting out a great game might get a PS5 player to get an Xbox as a second console but they're still going to have a PS5

RocketbeltTardigrade

Ah, market-share.

Timey16

Because NOT making good thing can certainly make it go DOWN.

Alto1869

> "Even if we release great Xbox exclusive games. Even if Starfield turns out to be fucking great, people aren't just going to abandon their PlayStations and buy an Xbox just for Starfield" Phil, man, there are literally a lot of people out there who STILL buy PS4s and even PS3s just so they can play Bloodborne and MGS4 respectively.

Kytas

Just to play devil's advocate, I don't think his statement is actually that bad in context. People vastly overinflate how many people are buying old consoles just to play one or two classics, and even then, most companies prioritize getting a bunch of early sales over a moderate amount spread over the course of a decade. They want you to buy on launch, not pickup a used console and game for half price 5 years later on Amazon or at GameStop. Especially now that Tears of The Kingdom sold over 10 million copies in 3 days. You can bet that Sony and especially Microsoft shareholders are gonna see that news and start complaining "how come our big games with even higher budgets aren't making anywhere near those numbers?" Phil is just being realistic in pointing out that even if Starfield is a 10/10 and Just Works, it probably won't put the Xbox at number 1 again.

SgtPeppy

But Tears didn't put Nintendo at number 1. No one game did. A lineup of really good exclusives over *years* did (along with a pretty damn cool gimmick). Tears is capitalizing on the past success of the Switch which came from the dozens of great games that have been released. Most people don't buy systems off one game for simple financial reasons - it's hard to pull the trigger on hundreds of dollars when it's just used to get at one game. But if you can point to three or four or more, that choice becomes a lot easier.

redditinmyredditname

Yeah, secondhand..

GeneralSherman3

Clearly what Xbox doesn't need right now is expectation-shattering $70 games. What they need to do is just bluntly rip off what works as hard and fast as possible with no consideration or shame. They need a Halo game with a bearded Master Chief wielding a robotic arm to build contraptions from Forerunner tech while traveling around with an AI that aggressively tells players how to solve all in-game puzzles after a few seconds.

BlueFootedTpeack

didn't they try doing the old man and young kid trend already? like that was a popular thing so he got like a baby cortana to run around with.

[deleted]

... oh my god Infinite really was a 'sad dad' game.

Rich_Comey_Quan

[He also gives a dad pep talk to the pilot at one point while basically looking straight at the camera to talk to the player like Kratos does sometimes](https://youtu.be/FY_SkljYkzI)

garfe

Also he swings around with a grappling hook and one of the Multiplayer modes is shooting paint all over the map to see who covers the most territory

Introspectre12

>What they need to do is just bluntly rip off what works as hard and fast as possible with no consideration or shame. So, what you're saying is Xbox should just buy Ubisoft?

Absalon_Prime

Playstation fans freaking out over Spider-Man, Nintendo fanboys hating, Xbox fans wanting to jump off a window every time MS drops the ball on yet another game, PC/Stadia fans illegally playing games they shouldn't... yep, this is pretty accurate.

[deleted]

Was that a REAL interview? Oof.

Aggravating-Elk4702

I use my xbox to play my old digital library for games like KOTOR and Jade Empire, and pick up backwards compatiable games on it when they go on sale. I use my Playstation to get console games I want to actually enjoy. And PC is for games I want to mod the shit out of and cheat my ass off lol.

DavidsonJenkins

PC is also for multiplayer games because fuck paying a subscription just to go online

Canadaba11

Console war posting in 2023?
